Replacing Airport Extreme Card in Late 2008 MBP - What to buy??

I've limped along for about 2 years now with my wifi constantly dropping while everyone else has a strong, constant signal. Doesn't matter where I am, it's always dropping and takes ages to reconnect. I've tried everything advised on the forum etc and am now about to buy something else as my main machine. I don't want to get rid of my MBP though so am planning on installing new memory and hard drive and while I'm doing that, want to replace the airport extreme card. The MBP will then become my secondary machine.
Problem is, I can't figure out what I need to buy to replace the **** card! Seems like a lot I'm finding are either for machines that never had cards or for 2009 or newer. I just need to know which card to buy.
OR . . . hearing that they are a pain to get to (keeping in mind I'll have the guts exposed while I upgrade the memory and HD) and fiddly . . . is there something external to plug into a USB I should get instead?

I'm already upgrading to 8GB of RAM and I'm planning on adding a Solid State Hard Drive since it will be a secondary machine. I really don't want to replace the optical drive too. At that point it's got new components in an old chassis with an old CPU.
I've been to the Genius Bar (back when I lived in a place where there was one in town) and they couldn't replicate the issue but as soon as I left it started up again. There are times when it holds the signal for a good hour or more or days like today when it's dropping it every few minutes. It's completely random.
No. This girl is going to go build her own PC with a fantastic GPU so as to kick some Diablo butt and the old Macbook Pro will only get used when I don't need it for anything serious. And I am most certainly not dropping another $2k + on a new MBP no matter how shiny they are! It's the end of an era as I've been using Macs exclusively for over 10 years now.

Thanks for the speedy response!
I"ve had the case open when I changed the HHD and Ram, and can seen where the card slots in. It's held by a supporting arm which lifts up when disconected from the Logic Board. it's weird looking inside, as you can see there are many of the same componants I've seen in other laptops. It is a tidier build though. I'm confident that if I detach the 3 antener conectors and remove the retainer screws a new card will fit back in.
The Genius Bars here in London are highly over subscribed, and I don't think I have the time or budget for that.
I'll keep plugging away, and see what happens. I'm almost getting used to being tethered to the Ethernet cable. I've only tripped over it 20 times a day!

Replacing Airport Extreme Card

Does anyone know where the airport card slot is on the 17" powerbook?
On all other powerbooks and ibooks it is easily accessable, but i can't find
it anywhere, or any information on where it is.
I've got another aorport card to replace it with, but it just seems dumb to have
to take it in and not do it myself.

The 17 inch PowerBook G4 doesn't have an AirPort Extreme card; instead, the functions provided by this card are built into the computer itself. Therefore, there isn't a slot for the card you have, and the built-in module can't be replaced by you without voiding the warranty.

AirPort Extreme Card for "Late 2005" G5 needed

I am trying to buy and install WiFi in an old G5 which identifies itself as
PowerMac11,2
Dual 2,0 GHz
According to Mactracker that makes it a "Late 2005" G5, and this is where trouble begins for me…
I searched for information on that; this is what I think is right at the moment:
All G5s – except for this "Late 2005" Modell – work with AirportExtreme! Cards.
This one needs an AirportExtreme!/Bluetooth card.
This card cannot be purchased from Apple, costs loads of money and is hard to install.
Could anyone help me confirm or invalidate anything of that?
Maybe you even know what I can do to still get WiFi?
All I would like is an affordable solution.

Airport extreme card is not recognize. what can I do?

I install the airport extreme card about 3-4 months ago, and didn't have any trouble at all. I used to move the computer to many places and never had a problem.
This Saturday, I took my PB to a friend’s house and when I turned it on, the icon didn't show at the top bar. I looked in the preferences and the airport connection option can't be selected (is in grey) and it says that any hardware was found. I check the elements of the computer (in "About this mac") and no hardware was found.
I unplugged the energy, took out the battery and removed the card, and plug it again. I have to say that removing it and put it back again was easier this time than the first time, it moved smoothly). Nothing happened. Still won’t recognize it.
What can I do? I bought the card in a tech ware house in Barcelona, FNAC who is a legal representative of the mac products.

Sounds as though maybe your AE wireless card may have failed;
and if you've tried more than a few times to re-seat the card into
the slot and had no results, you may see about trying the card
in another compatible computer to see if just the card is bad.
You may be able to swap out the part to restore wireless access;
but I am not sure of any situation that may limit your recourse
through the reseller of the card you now have. They may not take
it back, in other words. But to find out if the issue is your AE Card
or some other potential issue is an important pursuit. So, if you
can, perhaps a reseller of new parts can let you see if a new card
will resolve this issue by trying a new card and see if it shows in
the System Profiler; and if access to the internet is available nearby,
to also see if it connects readily.

Done, your link was ok!:) difficult to plug the tiny wires...on a Mac Pro early 2008, you must plug wire 1 and 3, the longer one at the bottom, the smaller one at the top....worked right away....p.s : take a little time to clean your Mac, you'll be amazed with the amount of dust !

Replacing Airport Extreme card (FLEX CABLE, GLUE?)

The airport was no longer working in my powerbook and I found someone selling a working card locally, however, it was from a 15inch which from what I understand does not use the same type of cable to connect it. (i.e. there is no flex cable glued onto the input) I peeled the flex cable off the non-working airport but have no idea how to put it on the working card, or if it is even possible. I was thinking maybe it is heat activated and the residual glue from the original connection can be reheated to use?

Airport extreme card in iBook G4 behaving strangely

About 6 months ago my iBook started randomly dropping the network connection - the little 'waves' icon greyed out. When I clicked the airport icon, sometimes I could simply re-select my network and sometimes there were no networks listed at all (can usually see 3 or 4 neighbours' networks). In the latter case, re-starting seemed to fix this.
This deteriorated and in the end I tried re-seating the card and checking the antenna connections. Subsequently there were no problems for about a week. Then it started again. This continued for a while and then a few days ago my mac shutdown unexpectedly. Now there is no airport connection except very rarely (e.g. once every 3 days!) it seems to connect for a few seconds.
So now I'm using it connected via ethernet and everything else seems to work fine - although obviously not an ideal situation. I have ordered a replacement airport extreme card, however I was doing some research into this and some tests and it looks like there may be more to it than i first thought:
System profiler shows the airport card:

The airport base station is fine - Verified that the network is up and accessible to other devices. Also, it is possible to transfer photos from my phone via bluetooth (noting that airport extreme and bluetooth are facilitated from the same card)

That could be your problem. Once the hard drive starts dying all sorts of drivers and data on the hard drive becomes inaccessible.
Backup your data NOW*: http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html and get a new Parallel ATA/IDE (not SATA) 9.5mm 2.5" hard drive.
Once you have replaced your hard drive and recovered your backup, we can focus on your wireless. But your data is more important than some wireless issues. When you install the new hard drive, see if you can improve the connection of the airport card and/or antenna.

Installing Airport extreme card for 2008 Mac Pro

After some searching I finally found which airport extreme card to get for my 2008 Mac Pro that I just purchased recently . According to the the link below in the Apple archives it is part number MB363Z/A. However the link further down in the thread for the instructions on installing the card doesn't seem to work any more. Anyone know where to find another link for some detailed instructions or pics on installing the card. I haven't found any as of yet. I installed the old extreme card in my G5 pretty easily, but this seems a little more involved in the Mac pro from what I've read so far.

Obviously, my Mac has very high latency where my PC works as expected.
I tried resetting the PRAM, but i didn't affect my results.
I tried updating Airport with the latest AirPort Client Update (http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPortClient_Update_for_MacBook_and_MacBookPro), but my hardware wasn't eligible for that update (Mid 2007 MacBookPro).
I believe this isn't a hardware bug because i get acceptable ping results when next to my router or in other rooms of my flat.
Can you help me with that bug ?

High latency with my Negear WPN824v3. As previously mentioned, the other wireless computers connect fine. Latency remains regardless of the power connected or not.

Airport Extreme Card work fine on new Mac Pro (Early 2008)?

Is it simple enough to install? And does it work? I'm not a complete noob, and I have built my own PC before, but I'm wondering if there were any quirks when installing this since I'm fairly new with Mac Hardware.

You do not need to have the Extreme base station. It is possible to set up the Express to "share" the routers internet capabilities and provide it through the ethernet port thus to your computer.
You do however need to setup the Airport express to match some setting at the original base station(router). Unless your IT savvy, this could prove to be a hard task for the everyday user.
If your trying to sustain high transfer rates... wired is always the solution. I personally used a 100ft Cat-6 cable, wired up through my large apartment ceiling to give "connected" benefits to various electronics at the other end. And the cable costs less than 99 dollars

This one here works on the G network, and is even a netgear product. This also costing less than the Express.

Installing AIrport Extreme card (which one? and WHERE?) in Dual 1.8 G5

I'm having an incredibly frustrating time trying to check out this (used) G5 which I thought, up until yesterday, might replace my G4 MDD. (Never mind that any topic I run a search for on the support.apple website returns NO results. Is it my antediluvian 10.3.9 and Safari 1.x--newest possible for that OS? But I digress...)

While not vividly clear in the illustration, the architecture seems to be different. I don't see the same "landmark" components here as in my G5. My Apple Support search difficulties have frustrated a search for a manual for this model.
Also I'm just now learning of the necessity of the Rube Goldberg-ian additional antenna that seems to be required. (As it sits, the G5 is about 3 feet away from the base station, but I guess I'll have to play along anyway and get one.) Having used an Airport card on a pre-Cambrian white iBook G3 >>>without any bloody antenna<<<, I find this too depressing to be laughable. I'm under the assumption that this beast came BEFORE the late 2005 makeover that necessitates the Airport and Bluetooth combination card. Please correct if I'm wrong about this.
The card I bought on eBay is Model A1026 EMC No. 1951 (thinking an Airport Extreme Card is an Airport Extreme Card is an Airport Extreme Card...ain't that rich!)

I did the installation of the Airport (after having uninformedly bought an AE card first) card on the iBook, but I can't begin to see where one goes on the G5 desktop. I don't even see the connector cable that goes in the back of the card.
I feel like my good intentions have landed me at Alice's tea table while hardly being on the cutting edge of anything. I'm a sheet of paper's width (see below) from just jettisoning this thing back to Craigslist whence I fetched it.
(Although I've long waved the banner of "Think Different" superiority, I'm beginning there's not a sheet of paper's width of difference between the respective byzantine frustrations of Planet Jobs and Planet Gates. At least I didn't make the pricey leap all the way into the MacPro rabbit hole...)
To sum up: which AE card, where does it go, what else isn't Apple telling me and are there any specific links?

Kernel Panics when using Airport Extreme Card...I think

So I have been to the Apple store 7 times in the last three days...here are the problems I've been having and what they've done. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
All of a sudden I started having Kernel Panic crashes (a least 5 a day.) Seemed to mostly happen when I was browsing (using Firefox.) Also I would usually experience an intermittent connection to the internet before a crash. (i.e. I would be browsing, then the connection would be lost...I'd turn off Airport...turn back on...then a few minutes later while browsing...crash)
Here is what I've done:
- At first we thought it was software...after two erase/install, that wasn't it.
- Maybe the new RAM from OWC...re-sat the RAM, took RAM out and replaced with factory RAM...had OWC send new RAM, that wasn't it.
- Maybe it is logic board, factory RAM, or Airport Extreme card...Apple replaced today...and THAT wasn't it.
- Got home after all these new parts and it crashed again while browsing wirelessly. So, I thought, "Could my Qwest wireless network be doing this!?!?!"
Have tried some different settings with Qwest and am awaiting another crash.
Does anyone have any idea what else I could try? (2 erase and installs, a new logic board, new RAM, new AE card, didn't do it!)
I so appreciate any help or advice. I'm in the middle of a couple of major projects and cannot bear to go back to the Apple store for an 8th time!

I don't have any solutions, but I had been reading about some folks having airport related kernel panics in the MacBook discussion forum. As a matter of fact, I had a kernel panic a little while back on my MacBook, and the crash log pointed to some issues with airport drivers. Here is what Macfixit says about these drivers and I quote:
"Bad built-in hardware (including hard drives) Repeated kernel panics can be the result of incompatible, damaged or misconfigured built-in hardware. This includes built in AirPort, Bluetooth and other networking hardware, corrupt or damaged hard drives, faulty processors and more. Examine your crash log (as discussed in our tutorial "An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports") for clues as to which device is implicated.
Sometimes the fix is as simple as re-seating built-in hardware. Make sure any PCI, PCI Express, AirPort and other expansion-type hardware is firmly and properly seated in its appropriate port.
In other cases, the fix involves attacking the problem at a driver or kernel extension level. Again, examine your crash reports and look for components specifically linked to certain hardware. For instance, the following Mac OS X components are all used by Apple AirPort hardware, and can be implicated (by crash logs) in kernel panics:
