Replacing all image types in a book TIF - PNG

We recently have changed from using TIF's to PNG's we did some tests and found that was a better solution for us. I wanted to know if there was any trick or fix that FM could do so that when I open a chapter and the image reference comes up missing because of this file type change if I could actually not have to sit there for 5 hours pointing to each image that has the same name but now uses PNG rather than TIF.
There is also the issue of moving files that has always made me frustrated with FM. If I reference multiple folders for images I should only have to point to the folder once, but FM seems to see the files in order that they are listed so it won't replace referenced images from an older folder and associate all of those files from the missing folder to the new folder you point to when you "show it the reference".
The other half of this problem is replacing references to images used multiple times. If you tell the file that IMAGE1.tif is now newIMAGE1.png why is it that I have to do that for each time that image appears. It's not like FrameMaker shows me what the reference is so I have no idea where it's used.
I used to use BookUtils but this doesn't seem to be supported anymore.

Just wanted to say that all my images are PNG and I have been using FM8; then, I downloaded the trial version of FM9, and FM9 pops-up windows of "missing files" to all my PNG grahics that I had initially created and linked to my FM8 documents. I then have to locate each and every file that I have saved in various locations on my network. Also, If I save a document with a new file name, in a different area on my network, the links to the files are broken and the "missing file" links pop-up in both FM8 and FM9. I don't know another way of locating and re-linking the PNG graphics to the new file paths other than to locate each one individually. It's costing me a lot of time to re-link graphics and I have many graphics and documents. Any suggestions? Demi

Hallo, and thank you for reading this.
I am a person who saves a lot of images online and renames them in different folders in different names like B - 34 or G - 56. I have been working with firefox 10 for quite some time and it had a pretty handy bug (I guess) where I could save an image and firefox would just save the image in it's original type (JPEG,PNG etc) while "save as type" was empty.
It also always has shown all the image types in the folder where I save the images (except for GIF) and that helpes me quite a lot by saving me the trouble of selecting "all files" every time I save or going to the folder to rename every image.
Now this seems to be lacking in the newest firefox versions and my question is if I can set firefox to always show me all the image file types when saving an image, instead of only showing JPEG's when I try to save a JPEG.

I suspect this is a Windows problem. I am surmising the FilePicker uses the Operating System or Desktop facilities. Does Windows 7 offer any other file categories like ''images'' ?

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select
File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

Replacing all text in book with sample text

Yes, the point that Rick was making crossed my mind, too. Using regular expressions, you can easily specify which characters should be replaced. Listing a number of same-width characters and replacing them with an "x" is as easy as this:
sTextString.replace ( /[abcdefghknopqrsuvyz]/g, "x" );
This would leave the non-mentioned characters as they are. Depending a little bit on the fonts that are used, of course, as they might have different character widths for more than the ones I left out. But even if you only replace a couple of characters throughout the doc, it would be enough to get the desired effect.
The difficulty is getting to the text strings and also to replace them. There are many objects for which a GetText method exists, but you have to set the flags such that you actually get the right text strings out of that method. And then you have to figure out where in the doc the text string is, then delete the existing one and add the replacement. All of this has to be done without deleting any markers or anchors.
Another approach might be to set the text location to the first character in the main flow and then walking through the entire document character by character, testing each one and replacing it where required. But I don't think you would get into tables with that method, as those are linked to the running text via an anchor in that running text. So the table cells will have to be processed separately. And if you do have a method to change text in table cells, you can use that method on all paragraphs.
I think Rick has more experience in tweaking text strings. I am usually working on structured documents and only handling the element objects and their hierarchy, not so much changing the text content of documents. Rick, do you have an approach to walk through all text strings in a document and replace them without breaking anything ?

Changing default picture viewer via GPO without changing image type and icon (Windows 7)

I am trying to change the default picture viewer for some file extensions (.bmp, .jpeg, .png and .tiff). Actually Windows Photo Viewer is the default viewer and we need to replace it with Microsoft Office Picture Manager.
I managed to do that change via GPO using the 'open with' preference under User Configuration\ Preferences\Control Panel Settings\Folder Options. So now the files are opened with Microsoft Office Picture Manager (office 2010). The problem is that the image
type became 'OIS.EXE' for all the specified file extensions. Moreover the icon is now the same (Microsoft Office 2010).
When I change manually the associated program for a file extension, the icon change but no the image type... this is different using GPO.
Is there a solution in order to change the default program but keeping the image type and associated icon ?
I tried to do that modification using the 'new file type' preference under Computer Configuration\Preferences\Control Panel Settings\Folder Options. I specified the 'open' action for OIS.exe, selected file extension BMP with associated class 'Bitmap Image'.
It solves the problem for image type, Microsoft Office Picture Manager opens the files ... but I have to specify the icon file path and icon index and I don't know where I can find the default icons for the file extensions ...
What is the best solution ? Am I right ? Am I doing something wrong ?

For the rollback, I will reimport the original/default keys for all the image types, this should be ok.

All Images Finder problem

Hi,
I can't figure this out. But then again, I'm fairly new to Mac (June 2009), so maybe this is a simple problem.
In the finder to the bottom left under the "search for" heading it has several buttons: All Images, All Movies, and All Documents.
Every time I click the "All Images" button, nothing happens. At all. I'm the only person who uses this computer, so there aren't other profiles in my system.
Does anyone have any advice about how to fix this problem? There's a picture I'm looking for and I can't remember the file name or type. Thanks!

So it does. I missed it because I always have Finder windows open. That said, the +search for+ thingy is a sidebar option and has no relationship to the Dock—it's related to Finder windows.

Selecting All Images in a Document over multiple pages

Hello,
Is there anyway to select all the images in a document, not just a spread.
For example, if I want to apply an object style to every image.
I can only do one page (spread) at a time
There was a post out there that started like this, but started talking about converting to outlines, so this part was never answered.
I was teying to find something through GREP, but nothere there either.
Is this possible?

.. and perhaps some more raster formats -- I don't know exactly which types ID distinguishes by name. You can find the type name per image in the Info palette -- it doesn't seem to differentiate between TIF and TIFF, for example. "Photoshop" is any PSD file.
An Illustrator file is tagged "Adobe PDF" (not weird, if you know how it works), and a placed InDesign page as "InDesign". Didn't find a real EPS quick enough to test that as well, but you could try.
If you remove the comment slashes from the 'else' part the script will show an alert for the image types it did not change.
All of these types are distinguished by type name only, you cannot check for a PDF only containing a single raster image, or a PSD containing vector info.

Search & Replace objects (image to image field) within LCD?

I was wondering if there is a possibility to create a script which supports an automated sequence.
I planned to run through an imported PDF file while searching for "images"-type objects with a certain "tag". When such an object is found, it should be replaced by an "image field" type object.
Is it possible to implement this type of function?

I believe you can't do exactly what you mean.
These days, I am working a lot with Acrobat which has many script features in common with LiveCycle. Now, in Acrobat, you meet a lot of security issues when trying to add/remove fields at runtime. I believe Adobe people must have adopted the same approach for LiveCycle because most of the work done with it, will be converted to a pdf, i.e. mainly Acrobat or Reader objects.

As you can see, I can capture a static image. I'll find all of them. I think you can go further and select the ones you identified by a tag. Actually, what do you mean with "tag"? A tooltip?
Anyway, I believe you can get to the URLs the images you are interested in are pointing to. Now, if you were able to delete a static image and add a corresponding image field, you could assign the retrieved URLs to these freshly created fields.

However, it seems that though dataNodes can be created and deleted, I don't come to any changes of the form itself. I tried with

Preprocessing xml to replace all xpath references with the referred elements

Is it possible to sort of pre-process xml before querying such as we replace all internal xpath references with the referred elements?
So below is the xml and as we see the typeId element of second app.test.module.library.Publisher element refers to the typeId element in the first app.test.module.library.Publisher element through xpath reference . Seems this is done by XStream(which we
use for xml-java) to reduce the size of resulting xml. This is all fine and in java one can easily traverse through such xpath references, but the challenge i am facing is in sql where i use node() function to get each of app.test.module.library.Publisher
element and fetch value of selectedText element of both the children of app.test.module.library.Publisher - (typeId, regionCode).

If you execute this, the second typeId value will be null but ideally I should be able to reach to the reference, which is typeId of first app.test.module.library.Publisher element and should be able to fetch selectedText of it, which is correct value (Book).
In other words first two app.test.module.library.Publisher elements are of same type (Book).
Since I am not able to find the way to do it, I thought I should have some way to process this xml to replace all such references with the referred element and that will eliminate the need to go for tedious xpath reference based access.

How can I delete all my contacts in Address Book?

I had syncing issues between my Entourage 2008 contacts, my Address Book contacts, and the PowerMac for Blackberry application. As a reference, I have around 5,000 contacts. I have solved the issue, but there is some collateral damage: read on.
Address Book duplicated my contacts two or three times, and it also created around 60,000 empty contacts. I have been able to clean the Entourage contacts, which only suffered from duplication but not from new empty entries.
I tried to delete the Address Book duplicate and empty entries. The easy way out, I thought, was to Select All and delete. It does not work. Given I have ended with around 80,000 contacts, after I Select All, and try to delete, the program hangs, and I have to Force Quit the Address Book application.
I tried to locate the Address Book file where contacts are stored, but I have not found an obvious name that would point to it, nor have I read anything about such file in the different discussion forums. So no success on this.
I have even used scripts in the past for deleting duplicates and merging contacts in Entourage, but I have not found one for Address Book that could take care of the massive number of empty entries with "No Name".
So, is there a way to delete all my contacts in Address Book?

There are two possibilities you can try:
1. Delete all your duplicate entries. You can try downloading and running this Applescript Remove Duplicates, which will create a group named Duplicates in Address Book, from which you should be able to delete those entries, by selecting the Group, then in the next column to the Right, select all the entries and choose Delete Cards from the Edit menu.
2. If that doesn't work, you can do this:
1. Quit Address Book if it's running.
2. Go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook and delete an of these files/folders you find there:
• ABPerson.skIndex
• ABPerson.skIndexInverted
• Address Book - xxxxx.abbu
• AddressBook.data
• AddressBook.data.beforesave
• AddressBook.data.previous
• Images
• LastImport.plist
3. Restart Address Book and see if the default cards are there (Apple card, and your Me card) and if all seems to be working correctly.

How can I replace ALL Contacts on the iPhone with my MobileMe Contacts?

I have removed all duplicates in AddressBook on my various Macs and have uploaded the master copy to MobileMe. I would now like to replace all Contacts on my iPhone with that MobileMe master.
I have followed the steps in the KB article for syncing the iPhone but when I get to the step of turning on the iPhone Settings for the Contacts it looks like the sync wants to merge the contacts. Of course, I do not want to "merge" since that will reintroduce all those duplicates.
I suppose I could manually delete each of the the hundreds of contacts that are on my phone until it is empty ... and then turn on the iPhone setting for Contacts. That way it will have no option other than "add." But surely there is a more efficient way.
(FWIW, when I turned OFF the setting for the Calendar it did empty the iPhone's calendar, which is what I wanted. But it didn't do that for the Contacts -- I turned that setting off but I was not asked if I wanted to keep or toss the Contacts. They are all still on the phone.)
This is an OG iPhone, if that matters.

Brilliant! That worked like a charm.
I created a new User Account on one of my Macs and logged into it. I connected my iPhone to its iTunes and checked my iPhone's Sync Contacts option in iTunes. Since that account's address book was basically empty (two dummy contacts, one for Apple and one for this new user), I ended up with only those two Contacts on the phone. Then, going back to my real User account (which does not have syncing turned on in iTunes) the phone synced nicely with the MobileMe account and populated the phone with all the MobileMe contacts and groups.

How do I get a list of all image files for a user?

The Finder folder windows have changed the sidebar. I no longer see any way to configure the Finder window to display a quick search for all images. How do I easily run a search for all image files owned by a user?
I am just starting to set up a brand new system that came with Yosemite and it's user interface has many changes from my older Snow Leopard system.     a. log in as that specific user.
    b. run terminal
    c. type "echo $UID"
    d. write down the user id that will be displayed
1. Go to the finder
2. go to the user home folder
3. click the box with the magnifying glass (upper right corner of the window)
4. type .jpg
5. a menu will pop under the magnifying glass box, select "jpg image"
6. click the "plus" sign that's displayed to the right of the word "save"
7. two pull down menus will appear, select "other" from the first one
8. a new window will pull down, scroll to "owner" and select it
9. back in the original window type the user id (a number) to the right of "owner" "equals"

Dear alll,
Previously, I inserted all images to my project from a shared folder with path A. But now I could not access to path A anymore, so I created a folder with the same name in path B which have the same images.
Now I need to update images and I cannot synchronize them from the current folder with path B.
I right-click an image in Project Manager pod, select Properties and then I saw this image has an attribute Shared Path is path A. There is any way to change this Shared Path to path B for all images in the project at a time ?

I duplicated a picture selecting CMD and D but, suddenly, iPhoto (latest version '11) started cloning that picture and replacing all the other photos with it.
Only when I click directly on one photo I can open it and see the real picture it is.
But the preview is always the duplicated one...
I tryed to duplicate another picture just to see if it turned out ok but the only changement was the duplicated picture!
I started repeating the second duplicated one instead of the previous one but my issue remained the same.
So, how can you help me to solve this problem without losing any saved picture?
Shall I re-install iPhoto completely?

As Larry says, restoring the back up is the fastest and best solution. Otherwise:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
