Replacing an external disk that is backed up to a (different) external disk
I have two external drives connected to my Mac -- one with my whole iTunes library on it and a second for Time Machine. Both the Mac internal drive and the iTunes external drive are backed up by Time Machine to the Time Machine drive.
All was working fine until I decided to buy a new (bigger) external drive for my iTunes library. I copied everything from the old iTunes external to the new, and iTunes worked fine.
The Time Machine disk is 1TB. The iTunes library moved from a 250 GB drive to a 500 GB drive.
However, Time Machine apparently thought it had to back everything up again, even though the drive names were the same, and even though Time Machine didn't create a new folder in the hierarchy inside backups.backupdb. I let it run (even though it deleted almost all of my old backups because it thought it needed to make room). After hours of preparing and hours of copying, Time Machine failed saying the UUIDs of the drives did not match and it couldn't resolve links. I asked it to back up again, and after hours of preparing, it copied just a few MB of files but then failed in the same way saying the UUIDs of the drives did not match.
Is there any way to prevent this in the future? Can I make the UUIDs match?
I have everything working OK now, but I've lost all the historical backups, and wonder what to do if -- in the future -- I want to change disks again.
As a side note: Originally, I tried to create the new iTunes disk from Time Machine itself, asking Time Machine to restore the iTunes folder. I figured this might be the safest way to let Time Machine know that the disk was changing. Well, the transfer got about 36 GB through the total 200 GB and failed. I re-partitioned (from scratch, HFS+ journaled GUID, using disk utility -- the same way I had originally set up the new drive) and tried all over again, with the same effect. So that's why I ended up just copying the files from the backup rather than having Time Machine do it. Can anyone think of why the restore would have failed? There don't seem to be any drive problems.

That I need to use a utility to actually clone the drive?
the reason is that you also have to copy a bunch of hidden files and folder on the drive and also make sure that none of the attributes of the files you are copying change. if you copy from finder some of them might change. I'm not quite sure about that though. it may be that of you copy everything including all the hidden folders using finder you will be fine. I would still use a cloner for this though. cloning using the restore tab in disk utility will work too.

Two 2008 R2 servers. Both do a nightly "Windows Server Backup" of Bare Metal Recovery, System State, C:, System Reserved partition, to another storage hard drive on the same machine as the source. Active Directory is on the C: The much larger D: data
partition on each source hard drive is not included.
Test recovery by disconnecting 500G System drive, booting from 2008R2 Install DVD, recovering to a new 500G SATA hard drive.
Server A good.
Server B fails. It finds the backed-up image, & then we can select the date we want. As soon as the image restore is beginning and the timeline appears, it bombs with "The system image restore failed. No disk that can be used for recovering the system
disk can be found." There is a wordy Details message but none of it seems relevant (we are not using USB etc).
At some point after this, in one (or two?) of the scenarios below, (I forget exactly where) we also got :
"The system image restore failed. (0x80042403)"
The destination drive is Not "Excluded".
Used diskpart clean to remove volumes from destination drive. Recovery still errored.
Tried a second restore-to drive, same make/model Seagate ST3500418AS, fails.
Tried the earliest dated B image rather than the most recent, fail.
The Server B backups show as "Success" each night.
Copied image from B to the same storage drive on A where the A backup image is kept, and used the A hardware to attempt restore. Now only the latest backup date is available (as would occur normally if we had originally saved the backup to a network location).
Restore still fails. It looks like its to do with the image rather than with the hardware.
Tried unticking "automatically check and update disk error info", still fail.
Server A SRP 100MB C: 50.6GB on Seagate ST3500418AS 465.76GB Microsoft driver 6.1.7600.16385 write cache off

1. While recovering the OS to the new Hard disk, please don't keep the original boot disk attached to the System. There is a Disk signature for each hard disk. The signature will collide if the original boot disk signature is assigned to the new disk.
You may attach the older disk after recovering the OS. If you want to recover data to the older disk then they should be attached as they were during backup.
2. Make sure that the new boot disk is attached as the First Boot disk in hardware (IDE/SATA port 0/master) and is the first disk in boot order priority.
3. In Windows Recovery Env (WinRE) check the Boot disk using: Cmd prompt -> Diskpart.exe -> Select Disk = System. This will show the disk where OS restore will be attempted. If the disk is different than the intended 2 TB disk then swap the disks in
correct order in the hardware.
4. Please make sure that the OS is always recovered to the System disk. (Due to an issue: BMR might recover the OS to some other disk if System disk is small in size. Here the OS won't boot. If you belive this is the case, then you should attach the
bigger sized disk as System disk and/or exclude other disks from recovery). Disk exclusion is provided in System Image Restore/Complete PC Restore UI/cmdline.
5. Make sure that Number and Size of disks during restore match the backup config. Apart from boot volumes, some other volumes are also considered critical if there are services/roles installed on them. These disks will be marked critical for recovery and
should be present with minimum size requirement.

I upgraded to Maverick and now Time Machine will not connect to the external hard drive to back up files. The external hard drive is a Western Digital "My Book Live" 2 TB. How do I solve problem?
I also had problem accessing my WD MyBookLive after upgrading to Maverick.
To resolve the problem, I used Connect To Server (Cmd K) to specify the IP address.
Then I enter a user id and password I created in the MyBookLive.
You can also verify that you have admin access to the MyBookLive using Safari or Chrome.
Just enter the MyBookLive IP address as the URL. -
I purchased the Logitech F310 game controller for my 2011 MacBook Pro. How do I get the driver installed for it. The Disk that came with the controller is a mini disk and will not insert into my laptop.
May not make a difference anyway. The Logitech support site does not show drivers for Mac OS for the F310:

I'd contact their support to find out if there is a Mac driver available, and if they can either give you a web link to get it, e-mail you the software, or snail-mail you a standard-size disk with the drivers. -

The 9 box new tab page got replaced by something called Delta Search when I downloaded an update for something. I've never had this issue before and I don't know how to get Mozilla to bring back my old 9 box tab page.You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Because each library is named "iTunes Music" anytime I go to bring one library on to the same external harddrive as another it asks me if I want to REPLACE one library with the other. I don't want to do this because each file has different variations of music files. Ideally, I'd like all three "iTunes Music" music files to live on the same computer or at least the same external harddrive. Thanks for the help!

I guess I asked the question in the title, anyway one more time:I am copying audiobooks on multiple CDs to Itunes so that I can sync them to an Ipod and listen to them, how do I keep the multiple disks inone folder under one book title and how do I keep the tracks from intermingling with the tracks from another disk? EXAMPLE: I just downloaded one book, consisting of three CDs and I see the Track o1 information from each CD in sequence followed by three Track 02, instead of all tarcks from the first CD followed by the tracks of the next CD etc.

I have no way of following all of those steps successfully since I am about butterfingered a sthe last dinosaur and will make every mistake in the world and get frustrated with something that SHOULD be simple.
I have the three disk autobook showing in iTunes library as one title , I had to enter the dat amyself since it was not listed on the internet data base, All entries for all tracks match and I have indicated the disk number as one, two or three of three as indicated.
Yet when I sync the iTunes to the iPod I am being presented with each individual track listed in the Audiobook Menu.
I am using the latest version of iTunes and a iPod Classic 160G-- that I purchased three days ago purposefully for the converting of the audiobooks to a portable device since the Library of Congress ( NLS BARD ) books are formatted differently and the player is bulky.
Does anybody hav eany other ideas?
Does anybody have an e-mail address for Apple, preferably iTunes folks?
This is a handicap accessability problem since my wife cannot see and depends on these audio books.
Obviously I will try that link to that Chapter and Verse site and see what I can do.

Can Time Machine Backup a Disk that has OS 10.4.11 On it?
I have two startup disks on my computer. One starts up with OS X 10.5.2, and the other starts up with OS X 10.4.11. I also have a third disk that I use as the Time Machine backup disk.
If I have started up with OS X 10.5.2, can I backup the disk that has OS X 10.4.11 with Time Machine? Does Time Machine create a backup that can restore the OS X 10.4.11 disk, operating system and all?I think you guys are right! One key is that I now understand can't restore a Tiger system from Time Machine. Thanks. I totally missed that.
My 10.4.11 "Tiger" system is on my MacBook internal drive, and my Leopard system is on an external drive. What I am going to do is:
Use Time Machine to back up "Leopard", but not "Tiger"
I'm going to back up "Tiger" using Retrospect. Then use Restore in Disk Utilities to make a copy of the "Tiger" disk on an external firewire drive. I believe that this disk can be a startup disk, if I so choose.
Next move the "Leopard" disk to the Mac Book internal drive. I can use either "Restore" or "Time Machine" to do this. I think "Restore" is the way to go, because I won't have to insert the "Leopard" install disk.
When I am finished, I will have "Leopard" on the MacBook, an external drive, and Time Machine. My old Leopard disk will be archived by Retrospect, and will also reside on a bootable firewire disk.
Whew!
What do you guys think about this?
Thanks for the help, and I think there is a possibility of screwing up when you have two operating systems on two different drives on the same computer. I especially follow your logic on Time Machine being designed for Leopard and not Tiger. Thanks for the clear thinking.
Long term I am going to have to devise a better method of safely upgrading operating systems while at the same time keep my old stuff available. Time Machine seems to be the perfect solution for that delima. -
I've got a disk that refuses to be deleted
I have an external drive that doesn't let me dismount it. Disk Utility shows the disk is know longer mounted but the icon remains on the desktop. I've tried to reformat the disk but but that creates a new disk on the desktop. The original icon remans on the the decktop. Is there a Unix command that would remove the the icon?
Is it still there after a reboot?

Since I upgraded to ML, I keep getting error msg. 4 my lacie external drive that it unexpectedly quit. It then proceeds to go away and reappear again a few mins. will appear. It also mentions this ejection could destroy my data. I've already updated the Driver to the most current one ta LaCie had for my 500 GB Rikki External. That didn't help. I also tried Disk Utility to repair permissions No Help! Suggestions?That would be highly unusual, since the Apple ID is almost always the email address, unless it's changed later, and normally has to be unique to set up a new Apple ID. In any case, if you have two Apple IDs (or more), you probably need to authorize the computer using both.

Here's the deal. Currently running SL 10.6.8 on a MAC Mini. Planning for eventual upgrade to ML. Have a 1TB external hard drive partitioned into two volumes, one volume for Time Machine and one volume for SL which I periodically update using Superduper. Thus I always have a point-in-time bootable backup on the external hard drive.
The MAC Mini supports Firewire 800. However, booting from my current external hard disk is pretty slow, since it only supports Firewire 400. I am considering buying an Iomega MiniMax which supports Firewire 800. Then, I would use the MiniMax as my bootable backup volume, and relegate the older hard drive to Time Machine.
So, question #1 is, can I daisychain the new MiniMax between the MAC Mini and my existing external hard drive? My expectation is that the new Mini Max would run using Firewire 800 and that the existing hard drive would run at Firewire 400 speed as it does today. If it doesn't (e.g., daisychaining in the Firewire 400 external disk with the MiniMax Firewire 800 external disk ends up running the whole leg at 400), my resolution will be to run the existing hard disk off an available USB port and have just the MiniMax running at Firewire 800.
Why am I going to all this trouble? That's question #2. I don't trust upgrades; they always break something. When I upgraded from 10.5.x to 10.6.x, the web directories got renamed, and all of my web apps 403'd until I figured out what happened. Plus, I have accounts for other family members, and in order to ensure their ability to use the computer during my upgrade process, I need to have the ability to fall-back quickly to a known-stable version of OSX. So what I'm trying to do is insulate myself from problems by partitioning the MiniMax into two volumes, taking a Superduper image of my current installation on the Mac Mini to MiniMax external drive volume 1, then upgrading to ML on the MAC Mini, and take a SuperDuper image of that to MiniMax external drive volume 2. Then, if the upgrade results in problems I can't resolve immediately, I can simply reimage the MAC Mini from MiniMax volume 1. BUT ...
... I've read that the ML installation creates a "service and support" partition that is different than the startup disk. I'm concerned that I won't be able to reimage the hard disk in the MAC Mini once I upgrade it to ML because of the partitioning changes it introduces on the startup disk. Theoretically, I +should+ be able to use the disk utility on my SL system to repartition the disk in the MAC Mini prior to reimaging it from my backup, but I'm considering the possibility that the new partition may be of a type that the SL disk utility cannot identify, and might therefore be unable to delete or even detect. So I'm hoping someone else has been down this road and can advise me. Even at Firewire 800 speeds, booting from an external disk is still going to be slow, so I want to be able to restore my SL image to the MAC Mini hard disk.
A little background on me. I work for a major disaster recovery provider. I used to have a Mac PRO G5, which I got used, and the first thing I did with it was install a second hard disk, SuperDupe an image from the first disk to the second, and made sure I could boot from the second. THEN I started using and customizing the MAC. I really feel vulnerable with the MAC Mini, since it only has the single internal hard drive - sort of like going out in public dressed only in a long T-shirt. So my whole thing is, I ABSOLUTELY MUST BE ABLE TO PUT THINGS BACK THE WAY THEY WERE before I do the migration to ML.

Just like you would create a new folder anywhere. Open the drive's icon from your desktop or the Finder, and click shift-command-N. (Or use the Finder menu if you prefer - File - New Folder).
If you can't create a folder, your drive may be the wrong format (you can't write to a Windows/NTFS formatted drive, for example). You'll have to back up any files you have on there, and then use Disk Utility to reformat it to Mac Extended (if it will only be used on a Mac) or MS-DOS format (if you want to share it with a PC).

I backed up around 700GB of data to an Iomega external hard drive (supplied by the client), using my Macbook Pro...all was fine when I unmounted the drive at the end of the backup.
The client took the drive away and called me to say he mounted the drive in Windows (on a PC), and he was able to work with the files for a time, but now the drive won't mount...
I collected the drive, hooked it up to my Mac Pro, but OSX tells me it can't mount the drive. It shows up in Disk Utility in the sidebar, but not on the desktop...
I tried repairing the disk using Disk Utility and with Disk Warrior, both tell me the disk cannot be repaired...
I am currently making a backup of the drive as a .dmg file, using a program called Disk Drill...it's slow as I expected, but I'm still not sure the .dmg will mount...because surely it's just making a copy of the data exactly, of which some part is not mounting (a mount directory or something???)
Is there any way you guys can think of me somehow taking the data and backing it up onto another disk?
Specialist recovery services seem to think there shouldn't be any problem recovering the data, and of couse, as a costly last resort, that's what I'll have to do, but does anyone know how they may go about doing it? It is something vastly complicated such as a command line thing?

Thanks in advance...You didn't say what format (filesystem type) the disk was.
However, I'd say your analysis is probably correct. Something has corrupted the disk. You can make a disk image copy to the .dmg which will preserve the data, such as it is, but I doubt extremely if it will fix any file system corruption.
Furthermore, if both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior have said the disk is unreadable I'm dubious that anything else will magically repair it and that recovery probably consists of snuffling through the disk block by block.
However if the filesystem is FAT (Windows) there may be other (Windows) utilities that can fix it.
You said you 'backed up the data'. Does that mean you still have the original data on your MBP? Are you trying to recover the client's changes? -
I have an iMac 2013 running OSX 10.9.4. I want to use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup user files to an external hard drive to free up space on my iMack Hard drive.
So, say I make the backup today, delete iphoto libraries from my iMac, and then backup my iMac in a week. What happens to the iphoto libraries that are on the external backup drive now that I am backing up the iMac where they no longer exist?
I will have them backed up to a separate second external drive as well.
I'm just very cautious about removing them from the hard drive.

That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.
