Replacing colours after an Image Trace

Hi everyone.
I've just used image trace to get a three colour vector of a photograph. I want to replace the three colours in the image with colours from my brand's style guide. At the moment, they're thre shades of a kind of muddy brown.
Any ideas how I do this? The three colours in the image aren't showing in the swatch menu and I don't really know what I'm doing. :-(
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
CF

expand the trace, then have a look under Edit > Edit Colours > Recolour Artwork. you might well be able to figure out the rest.

  • Problem with replacing colour in posterised image

    Hello,
I am looking for help with a problem I am havng in trying to create a Warhol type poster image
    I have scanned in a B & W image as a tiff file(epson v750 pro).
I have then opened the image in CS4.
then used the poster edge filter.
I have then have to clone large areas to clean it up (remove speckels to clean the image to get large areas to white).
I want to then replace the white area (already cleaned to get it to white) with yelow for example. I have  change the mode from greyscale to RGB to allow me to add colours.
I can select the colour replace tool and select my colour(Colour picker tool, yellow).
But the image is not taking the colour. Nothing is being painted on the image.
I have tried so many times. some times I am getting the replacing colour on only about half of the image (going left to right). It still leaves
I thought thi smight have had something to do with the cloning action. but the half of the image that takes the colour has large parts of it cloned to white.
It is not possible to clone the image before using the poster filter as there is no true white in it.
I am under a bit of pressure to have this completed by Friday for a Birthday party.
    Any help greatly Appreciated.
    Many Thanks
    k.

You didn't really say how many colors you needed to make it. There are a couple of ways to do this, some are destructive and others are non-destructive.
I assume the shades of gray are quite distinct. The more contrast between the shades the easier it is to select the shades.
First option is destructive - Select all of one shade, then hit shift-backspace both keys on right side of keyboard. This will bring up the fill dialog box. here you can select a color and click ok then the selected areas will have that color.
Second way non-destructive. Create a new layer and fill it with the color that you want, createanother layer and fill that one and so on untill you have all the colors that you need.
Now select the layer the image is on and create your first selection of one of the shades. Click on the layer that has the color that you want. Next click on the icon at the bottom of the layer panel that looks like a circle inside a square. You selection should now disappear and a new icon on the layer of that color.
    Repat for each color.
If the colors are blocking your imsge which odds are they will be, click on the eye icon on the color layer to temporarally make it not visible. And repeat for any layer blocking your view. Clicking the where the eye was will make it visible again.
The second way may seam more difficult, but once you have the selections done for each color layer, it is a simple process to change the color at any time or remove that layer all together or better yet click the eye. The point is once the hard work is done should you change your mind, it is extremely simple to change latter on. As long as you save your file to include layers you can change this any time later on. Both tiff and psd allow you to save layers.
An additional option: if your image as a texture or other details that you want to keep, change the blend mode on that colors layer from normal to color or hue. You might even want to try out some of the other blend modes and see how they effect your image. Doing this step to an image with details will make it more beleiveable. In fact option two and this step is the way to go if there are details in the image as with out blending, or reducing the opacity of the color layers, it would look like a color by number.

  • Cannot fill path correctly after using image trace.

When I pull a regular 2-color photo from the web and use the tracing option, selecting ignore white, then expanding it into a path, it will not fill correctly.  Instead of filling the object created, it fills the entire photo area of the original image.  Here is a screen recording of an example:
    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1TufpLZsjupYlFhSS1PMFBhTzg/edit
In the video, you'll notice that the fill option after expanding is marked with a "?".  I'm not sure why.  The goal here is to, after expanding, fill ONLY the image of the cursor.
    Thanks for your help

    CS6?
When selecting "Ignore white", it still creates objects, but doesn't fill them. So you first have to delete unfilled objects, before you can fill the rest of the drawing.

  • Inverted Colours after converting images

    Hey Guys,
i got a huge Problem. At my Office I have an Intel iMac 7.1. I have to convert .tiff-files into .Jpg and sometimes resize them into low resolution.
I'm using the Automator for it (Finder same Problem).
The converted Images are inverted. Funny thing is: If i put these images onto a Win PC, the files a normal, not inverted.
If I edit the converted images on the iMac again, they will displayed at the iMac normally again. However these files are inverted on a normal PC.
Do you understand me? I need to fix this bug, because i cannot work if there are 1. inverted colours in e.g. resized pictures and 2. i dont know if they have normal colours on a PC or not..
If someone of you could help me, it would be amazing..
While looking at goole, i just found one page where it says that this is an old bug from Mac OSX. But i dont have that prob at my Macbook and I never saw that somewhere..
Sorry for my mistakes, not my foreign language..

Open up Universal Access (bottom of that pane). Go to display, and make sure the dot next to

The keyboard shortcut is pressing the Apple/Command, Alt/Option, and Control keys all at the same time , along with the number 8 key.

  • Problem changing fill colour after image trace?

I am using illustrator cc 2014 to trace a jpeg image. After tracing I want to change the colour of the resulting image. The default colour after tracing is black but the image fill colour is showing as a question mark and when I go to change the colour the whole artboard turns grey no matter what colour I choose. I know the document is in CMYK. Does any one know whats going on here?

Hi I'm still having trouble with this here are a couple of images of the before and after.
This is the traced and expanded image:
And after I select a colour:
There are two problems with this, first is that its gone grey (I'm definitely in CMKY mode) and second is it did not fill the image in the way I had intended.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Replacing colour/texture from one image onto another?

Desperately need some guidance here as this has been driving me nuts....
I want to use the colour and texture from one photo onto my own design. Now, using the rubber stamp tool I am able only to clone a certain area that moves with the cross hair, but how can I clone a section from one photo and use that as a fill to create another design? In other words, clone a colour from one photo as a colour fill for another design?
Even using the colour replace tool and selecting source: image I am left with the colour pallette as the destination and cannot use the colour from the image to paint my new image from it.
    Thanks a heap

If I want to copy a single color from one image to another, here's what I'll do:
Create a new rectangle in the source image
With the rectangle selected, use the eyedropper to pick a color from someplace in the source image
Copy the rectangle and paste it in the destination image
Select the object I want to color and use the eyedropper tool to select the color from the copied rectangle
(A layer with rectangles of different colors is sometimes handy for setting up a color scheme and using it consistently.)
You can also create bitmap patterns to use as fills for vector objects. Fireworks comes with quite a few, but it's easy to add your own. Here are a couple of tutorials

  • How can i resize my image after image trace?

    Hello all!
I'm just now getting into using illustrator (currently on trial for illustrator cc) and I've taken a couple of my illustrations and attempted to use the image trace. The only way I can seem to get the image trace to actually produce an accurate trace is if I use a very large file size. So I take my scanned image (600 dpi 2000x 1891) and load it into illustrator, and here's where the problem comes in. Illustrator will not show my entire image on the screen. I zoom out as far as I can go and it's still cutting off the bottom and top of the image. When I try to scale the image it won't let me scale it down to even 90%.
So my question, is there anyway I can load my full size image into illustrator, image trace it, and then scale it down so I can see the whole image on my screen? It's very hard to paint and work around the image when it's getting cut off.
The first picture is what the whole picture looks like, but it's such a small file size it's blurry and won't image trace correctly.
The 2nd image is what happens when I load my full image size in, I'm scrolled as high as the page will go and the top is still cut off.

    Hope this helps Trevor.
There are other ways of doing this, but try this one.
    Menu - ‘Select all’
    Object - ‘transform’ - ‘scale’
Dialogue box - click ‘uniform’ add number 1% to 100%, your choice
Options - tick ‘scale stroke & effects’
    tick ‘preview’ to see results

  • Hey guys, I'm having trouble matching the colour of the image back ground (white) with the pre-set colour selection. is there a tool that can help me? thanks

hey guys, I'm having trouble matching the colour of the image back ground (white) with the pre-set colour selection. is there a tool that can help me? thanks

Your description of the problem is not quite clear so I made certain assumptions. I hope I am rigtht. I believe you have a color patch such as this:
that you would like to place in an image area that has modeling in its white background. You do not want to lay in a flat color but rather to add a color and not lose the modeling or other background tone. The problem is, after making the selection, if you use Edit > Fill and set the Blending mode to Color, the white background remains white. The only colored background area may be an object's shadow or some similar area that is not pure white. (Image 2) It is an unsatisfactory result.
If that is an accurate description of the problem, consider this:
    Image 1: The original image
Image 2: Edit > Fill with the Blending mode set to Color. White remains white
Image 3: Mode changed to Lab Color. Edit > Fill with the Blending Mode set to Color. Then return to RGB.
(I would not normally use this green as a replacement color but since it is a Tiffany clock, I chose a light version of Tiffany's trademark color.)

  • Can I import settings from CS5's Live Trace to CS6's Image Trace?

I'm loving CS6 Illustrator, except for one thing. Image Trace. Here, Adobe seem to have taken away the two most usefull settings from Live Trace, and replaced all the presets with ones that are pretty much unusable. I almost always used either 'Comic Art' or 'Lettering' to trace hand-drawn images, but they're both gone. None of the new settings are good enough, even if I make a custom one. The main issue is that the sliders in Image Trace are for completely different things to those in Live Trace, so it's difficult to translate one set of settings into the other.
With Image Trace, I cannot get the same results as with Live Trace, and so far, have found myself having to have Illustrator CS5 open at the same time as CS6, just so I can get workable traces.
I don't know if it's possible, but is there any way to import the presets from Live Trace, or even the full tool, into CS6, to replace the new Image Trace presets?
If not, does anyone know how to make the equivelant of Comic Art  in Image Trace's new settings?
Images, to help define the problem: This is a close up of a file I was trying to trace, showing the major difference in quality between the two CS versions.
Left: CS5 - Comic Art setting.
Right: CS6 - This is a custom setting, but is the closest I have come to Comic Art thus far.
As you can see, the definition of Image Trace is far lower in quality than Live Trace, giving me one large connected blob of colour rather than the distictly separate lines produced in Live Trace.

I can't show the original as it is a HUGE file, 10000 pixels wide. I scan as high as my scanner will go. And that 10000 is shrunk down already so as not to exhaust my RAM. Below is a smaller version, but yes it is a b/w drawing but on a colour scan. It's been treated using Levels in Photoshop to remove the grey/blue colour of the paper, but nothing else.
I can see round the edges of the black in Photoshop that there are bits of colour, mainly reds/yellows. What do you think I need to do to it to help it trace better?
Actually, I'll throw in my Image Trace settings too, so people can see what settings I'm currenty trying... I got the Threshold directly from Comic Art in CS5.5.

  • Replace colour to one of my choice...

    Hi There
I am very new to photoshop (CS5 extended) and have been trying all afternoon to replace a colour to one of my choice. I have watched many videos online to help but I can change the colour but not to the colour of my choice. In the Image>Adjustments>Replace colour I sucessfully make the selection to change the colour. The colour that I want to replace it with is a charcoal which is C=64, M=56, Y=53, K28. Can anyone help me please?
I thank you in advance for any assistance.
    Thank you

No don't worry about those instructions, they have nothing to do with what I've done.
The way you'll get the color you want and the way I did the image above is:
Change your image to Grayscale mode, then change it back to CMYK and you should get something very close to the CMYK values you mentioned in your first post.

  • Action batch export issue with image trace

So, currently I'm working on batch processing jpeg sequences using illustrator's image trace and distortion effects. I have batch exported the image traces of the sequences via Adobe bridge.  Now I'm trying to create an action which opens the .ai files containing those image traces, apply a graphic style to the trace, and export a png from that.  I'm banging my head against the wall trying to get this to work right now. If I do the steps (step by step... not using a recorded action) I want on a single file, it works great, but the moment I batch export using the action I've created, it puts the original .png image that the image trace was linked to, on top of the image. The result is a bunch of .png exports that look exactly like my original image sequence.  If I add a "save" function to the action and open the resulting .ai files, I can see that the image trace vectors are in the file. The "linked png" however visible on the layer above those vectors.  Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? How do I get rid of that pesky linked image.
Also, for anyone who might be thinking that it has something to do with expanding the image trace before applying effects, this issue I'm running into, I've determined, is happening higher up in the hierarchy of the actions... If I simply make an action to open the image trace illustrator file and save it back out, the same issue occurs... placing the .png "linked file" on top of the vector image.
While I'm at it, I might as well ask if anyone knows how to change the illustrator default image trace preset.... Without being able to change it, or much less specify in the action sequence that I'd like to use a user created image trace preset rather than the default setting, it's greatly overcomplicating my workflow. Makes what could easily be one-step batch processing into two. Seems pretty silly if you ask me.
Please, if you guys have any insights on this, let me know. It's super frustrating... By the way, if you're wondering what type of effect I'm going for, the idea (as well as some explanation into their own process) starts at 12:44 of this video (http://vimeo.com/77427470).
    THANKS!

Just wanted to let you guys know, for anyone who might be having my same issue... My home computer, even after a fresh install of Illustrator, was still placing the linked jpeg over the traced vector shapes when batch exporting... I did however find a workaround.  Rather than using Bridge CS6 for the batch image tracing, I used Bridge CS5 to trace in Illustrator CS5. Then, I used Illustrator CS6 to batch export an action that imported and applied an effect to those image traced sequences.  When you do this, it forces you to expand the tracing on import (because of the difference in Illustrator versions I'm assuming).  This way, when you batch run the action, it's already working with expanded vector shapes.  Not sure why this works, but it does.
Also, I was having some issues getting Illustrator to apply the graphic style when batch exporting. I got it to work by copying an object with that particular graphic style to the clipboard, then adding in the action I was running a "paste" command, followed by a "clear" command.  I can only assume that Illustrator was having issues loading custom graphics styles while batch exporting. The paste/delete technique is annoying, but gets it done.
Anyways. Just wanted to check in on this one. I'm happy I was able to muscle my way through it all.

  • How to image trace multiple objects at once on Illustrator CC?

    Hello,
This may sound like a stupid question, but I am having troubles trying to image trace multiple objects all in one go.
I'm currently working on Illustrator CC and I remember this process being a lot easier to do on Illustrator CS5.
I have a typical job where I create client specific barcodes on a separate program, and then bringing them into Illustrator to vectorize.
When I used to do it in CS5, all I had to do was release clipping masks, select all 50 or so barcodes, then Image Trace - and voila, al of my barcodes were vectorized at once - easy.
I now have to vectorize about 120+ barcodes and Illustrator CC is only letting me select & image trace one barcode at a time. There has to be a better way, and I'm hoping someone here can help.
(I would open up CS5 and do it from there, but my work computer was recently replaced with a newer iMac and was only provided with Illustrator CC)
    Thanks!

Not sure what your barcode-specific challenges and methods may be, but my general aversion to the image trace feature compels me to suggest that you just create the barcodes in vectors in the first place. I do that using Terry Burton's free online barcode generator.

  • Image Trace with Document Library palette feature - bug?

I've been trying out the different palette options in Image Trace and I believe I've come across a feature that does not work as the designers intended. In Adobe's documentation, there is very little said about the feature, which I believe is intended to allow you to substitute a custom palette for the palette that would be created by the original artwork that is being traced. It's under the Palette drop-down menu and is available if you've selected the Color Mode. It's called Document Library. In Adobe's documentation, there are these two paragraphs:
    [Reproduced from http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/image-trace.html#tracing_options]
    Palette
Specifies a palette for generating a color or grayscale tracing from the original image. (This option is available only when Mode is set to Color or Grayscale.)
To let Illustrator determine the colors in the tracing, select Automatic. To use the document swatches as a palette for the tracing, select Document Library.
This would be a great feature, if it worked! I have a lot of artwork to trace, it's all in a set yellow-to-green palette, and it would be a big time-saver if I didn't have to change the palette after the trace. Unfortunately, the feature doesn't work as promised. Either that, or I'm doing something wrong.
I've embedded a video to demonstrate the problem, and would appreciate any comments.

Do I really need to describe what I don't like about these results?
Since the original experiment, I have tinkered with it and discovered that the more colors I have in my palette, the better. I had three colors; it only used one of the three. With some settings changes I could get it to use two. With six colors, it used four. I was unable to get it to use all six.
I apologize for the poor quality of the original rendering of the video. I have since re-rendered it. Embedded below, but if you still cannot see what is going on, I recommend you click on the direct link and go to YouTube, where you will be able to either use the Large Player feature or make the video full-screen. Hopefully that will make it possible to see more detail.

  • How to avoid transparent background converting to white in smart object(psb )when image trace High Fidelity as we have the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace.

i have a psd image file in photoshop cc 2014 that has transparent background layer. I wanted it to convert to vector. The best option i saw was to first convert it to smart object in photoshop via Layer->Smart Objects-> Convert to smart Object. then exported it to a psb. Then i opened the file in illustrator and applied the image trace tool but the transparent background got converted to white but i had the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace. But in case of High Fidelity Conversion, the ignore white option is not available, what should I do now?

after using  high fidelity image trace  i hit expand, then i went to layers and hit the drop arrow by my thumbnail, which then shows <Group>,hit that drop arrow and it will show a list of all your paths, the very bottom one was my white background, you can click the eye or delete that path and it disappeared for me. i was using a png file with a transparent background, and nothing else worked for me, it always converted with white background, i never saw this mentioned anywhere, and accidentally discovered it, hope it works!!!

  • Problem with psychedelic colours after encoding in iDVD6

I'm working on a long project in iDVD6 that just fits on a dual-layer disc. Everything is ok except for one particular movie. This clip starts out in mostly a greyscale colour scheme then dissolves to full colour after a few minutes. In the project, this plays fine.
I encode to a disc image and no errors are reported. On a dual g5, this takes about 10 hours to encode.
When I mount the image and check it, this colour problem arises. After the grey sequence, the colour sequence looks like random colour garbage. Very psychedelic but not the look I need for this project.
I tried deleting the encoded assets, re-exporting the movie file in question a couple times, and also sneaking some colour information into the greyscale opening sequence via a single line of colour pixels across the top of the 640x480 frame.
I will try exporting the movie from my editor with another codec. Any other suggestions for fixing my LSD video problem?
    Thanks,

    No clever ideas - sorry.
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
    Many possible origins. Most common:
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4 - is OK
iMovie pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
