Replacing damaged original drive with new one.

Hopefully I've chosen the correct boad...  Our Pavillion dv6-2173cl hangs after showing the: wallpaper with the Taskbar fame and the Start button, Hp logo button and Date/Time. The cursor shows with the blue'busy' ring for several minutes then the whole thing 'freezes' necessitating the use of the power button on the case to shutdown.  This also happens in Safe Mode.  Hp Daignostics returned an error code of 9077j2-50e656-xd0021(7? sorry wrote it in a bit of a hurry, lol)-6ou103 for the drive test.  We can still get to the disk as a 'slaved' external drive so personal info, settings are available.  Since replacement drive is practically a given, I was wondering about just making the new disk a 'plain' W7disc.  So my questin is "Are the HP programs necessary? Or are they just 'Space Takers"?  I suspect an Overheating problem as the original drivr case has heat discoloration... Probable cause of disk damage... Right?  All we need is a working drive till finances allow purchasing a new computer. Probably Feb. or so.
This question was solved.

That has always worked, I have never had it fail.
The only thing that I can suggest is to make sure that the key is correct.
The entire drive has to be deleted to create unallocated space on the entire drive. Just formatting it is not enough. After you create unallocated space let the Windows disc format it automatically, don't do it yourself.
Here is a tutorial that describes what I am talking about.

The best thing to do would be to start over. Use Setup Assistant this time.
Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

  • Replace old Hard Drive with 4TB ones on ix2-dl

I ordered the ix2-dl with two 4TB seagate hard disks (ST4000DM000) which is on the official support list. The hard drive came a couple days later than the ix2-dl. So I tried the ix2-dl with an old 640GB hard drive.
Now ix2-dl seems to like my old 640GB a lot. I could either use it alone or use it with one 4TB drive. It proves that ix2-dl does support the 4TB hard drive. It's just I couldn't use both 4TB together...
When I put two 4TB hard drive in, it ended up with lower light solid blue and upper light flashing red. The LenovoEMC Storage Manager shows the error message "Storage failed and some data loss may have occurred."
The web management screen (http://ix2-dl/manage/restart.html) shows the message "Device Software Restart In Progress. The device is starting up..." It will hang up there forever.
I cleaned the 4TB drive with diskpart in windows 7 before put into ix2-dl. Abd firmware is the latest 4.1.104.31360.
I saw jlamendola get this fixed with factory reset in another thread. But I couldn't really get to the factory reset page in the web management portal... The reset button on the back doesn't help. I even tried to do the factory reset with old 640GB drive and choose shutdown after reset. I could only get there with the old 640GB drive. Then I could switch to 4TB drive. But it still gave me the same error message and red flash light ...

    Finally I solved the problem.
I cleaned another 1TB drive by using DISKPART as suggested in manual. I was able to access web management with this drive. Then I choose option of factory reset & Power Off.
After power OFF I replaced 1TB drive with new 3TB (already cleaned) drive. NAS accepted this time. I hope it will run smoothly now onwards. Though problem is solved I still didn't understood why it not worked with my new drive.
    Future Improvement :
The software restrction of disabling the management page should be removed, so that in such case user should be able to access management page even if the disk is not present  atleast for ix2-dl which has the firmware on device itself & not on hard drive.

  • How to Replace existing Hard Drive with new Hard Drive, while keeping old files

    Hi All,
I have recently replaced my hard drive on my Macbook Pro, with a new hard drive. The old Hard Drive was 160 GB, while the new one is 320 GB.
What I did before replacing it was clone my hard drive using "SuperDuper". I cloned it to the new hard drive and then simply removed my old hard drive and installed the new one with the clone on it. Then I booted it up and began running it. In fact I am using it right now.
    My questions are:
    Is this a good practice?
Will this work, without problems, indefinitely?
Is this the prescribed way to upgrade ones laptop hard drive?
The reason I did it this way was because I upgraded to Mountain Lion via the apple store download and I do not have the CD for the OS. So I figured if I could make a bootable copy, that might work. So far everything seems fine, but I really just want to know if this will last for a long time. I plan on also making a partition with Windows on it also, so I was wondering if anyone can comment on that too.
If anyone can comment or give any advice on this topic I would really appreciate it.
    Thank you very much!
    Cheers.

Every thing is fine except Super Duper does not clone the recovery partition.  If you start your MBP holding the OPTION key, you should see the internal HDD and the ML recovery partition.
You can reinstall ML or reclone using Disk Utility>restore.

  • Replacing old Time Capsule Drive with New one...how?

I recently purchased a larger hard drive to be my Time Capsule drive because the current drive was getting close to capacity. Is there a way to migrate/copy/clone/move my backup history to this new drive or do I have to start from scratch. If I start from scratch then it was really no use having the other backups and I don't necessarily want two disks full of backup data. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Did you purchase a 1TB Time Capsule to replace your 500GB TC or did you simply purchase a larger USB HDD to connect to the previous TC?
If the former, I don't know the best way to clone from one NAS to another NAS. I don't believe Disk Utility works, so it'll need to be a third-party app that can perform that function.
If the latter, you should be able to clone the TC internal HDD to the USB HDD via AirPort Utility -> Time Capsule -> Disks -> Archive. This will erase any data on the USB HDD as well.

  • Ailing 40Gig - Replace the Hard Drive, or New One?

I have a 40 gig iPod that seems to be having major HD issues. I've tried Restoring and all of the other tips I can find, to no avail. It starts synching, but can't seem to finish now...1200+ songs. I did get it to synch 70 songs earlier today, so I'm re-trying the whole library to see how it goes.
What caused all this? Nothing I can think of - no shock to the iPod other than the usual wear and tear (in the car, to the gym, etc). It just suddenly started freezing during playback, or skipping to the next song in the middle of a song.
The crux of my post is: should I buy a replacement HD for this iPod ($130ish if I install it) or should I foot the $350 bill for the new 80 gig unit? My wallet says ouch to the 2nd option and it could be a few months before I could do that one.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
From what you describe, I would say the problem is with your video chip, however this is really just my best guess.  One possible solution you may want to try is getting the GPU reflowed - the guy on the link below has a good reputation for doing this and if it turns out the GPU is not at fault he only charges a diagnostic fee of $29.99.  At least it's an option to consider.

  • Need help replacing old apple id with new one

hi. i'm trying to update (in icloud) an appleid with an email from 5 years ago.  i was able to delete the old email on my iphone, but do not see an option for this on my mac.  when i went through the 'verify your id' process, it shows the current id/email that i use for itunes, etc.  however, there is no way, it seems to delete the old email/id on the mac and replace with the new.  i would appreciate any advice or experience, thank you in advance.

If you have changed your iCloud ID and are now trying to change the iCloud ID on your Mac, go to System Preferences>iCloud, sign out, then sign back in with the ID you want to use.

  • Replaceing previous iPod touch with new one...how to Sync?

Hi, Received a new iPod Touch for Christmas to replace my 2nd Gen version that had run out of memory capacity. My question is...how do I get all of my iTunes library that's on my PC onto the new iPod touch? I want to keep my current iTunes account, just move everything onto the new device? Is it as simple as just plugging it in and naming it the same as the old device? I'm assuming the new serial number will supercede the previous..will that render my previous device useless? I'd still like to keep it for use in the car.

Thanks, do I have to have a archived back-up (i.e. DVD's) of my itunes to do the recovery, or is there an archive on the hard-drive that's hidden?
every time you synced your old iPod, iTunes should have made a backup. all you have to do is plug in the new gadget and follow on-screen instructions.

  • How to replace a current driver with another one

    Hi,
currently there are two different audio drivers on my solaris 10,
    pkginfo | grep 810
    system SUNWad810 SUNW W1100z & W2100z Audio Drivers
system TOOLSi810 Audio Driver for Intel ICH audio controller
    prtconf -D gives
    pci1043,1713 (driver name: audio810)
So i guess SUNWad810 is currently used for driving the audio device. If i want to change the driver to TOOLSi810 , how can i do that?
    thanks !

In another thread we've already found out that the pci vendor/
device id for the sound hardware in your system is "pci8086,24c5".
To configure the system to use my audio driver (audioi810) instead
    of Sun's (audio810) remove the "pci8086,24c5" -> "audio810" driver
    mapping and install a mapping "pci8086,24c5" -> "audioi810":
    update_drv -d -i '"pci8086,24c5"' audio810
    update_drv -a -i '"pci8086,24c5"' audioi810
(Note that there are double quotes around the pci8086,24c5
string, and the "pci8086,24c5" string is enclosed in single quotes
    to protect the double quotes).
Unfortunately you have to reboot to activate the new driver. This
is due to a Solaris kernel bug, the kernel does not properly clean
out all references to the old driver from kernel memory after the
"update_drv -d" command, so that the next "update_drv -a" will
tell you that the new driver "failed to attach". But after a reboot
the audioi810 driver is supposed "to attach" just fine.

  • Replace both Raid 1 hard drives with larger ones.

This computer came set up for Raid 1.  I need to replace both hard drives with larger ones.  What is the proceedure for doing this?

Hi wweksjk!: Yes you can have 2 HD's with differing capacities as an example on my Xion-MSI PC which was custom built in 2006 I had 2 Western Digital HD's, respectively 160 GB & 250GB divided into 3 partitions
the brand name isn't as important as the rpm the faster the drive spins your computer will be faster
also look at the size of the buffer on the drive as well because the higher the number there will speed up the boot time as well
however installing a new drive as the boot drive will be complex but if you follow instructions that come with the HD installation software it can be done
for example a 7200rpm drive is faster than a 5400rpm but not as fast as either a 10k or 15k model
    good luck
hope this helps & enlightens you
    Happy Holidays!

  • HT4889 Replacing System hard drive with a new one. How to get everything over to the new boot drive?

Replacing System hard drive with a new one. How to get everything over to the new boot drive? Should I use Carbon Copy or does apple have a better untility to do this?
I can't get my current system drive (OSX 10.8.3) to start on the first try. I always have to shut down and restart again to finally see the Apple logo.
Have used disc utility to repair the disc and permissions several times and that works. The next time I boot up, it works fine and I get the apple logo, but then the second time I boot up, it's back to the blank screen again and it only boots after the second try.  I have tried this repair three different times now always with the same result. Works right the first try (after the repair) then from the second time on it doesn't work. I just get the white screen until I reboot a second time.
Thinking I should change drives but what's the easist and best way to move everything over to the new drive so it will boot correctly with all my data on it. This is the system drive for a Pro Tools 10HD setup. MacPro 3,1 with 16 gigs ram and OSX10.8.3 on it.
    Thanks for any help!

If you have a time machine back up of your current drive you can do this
Shut down your computer, install the new drive. While the computer is off plug in the external hard drive that you have your time machine back up on. Hold Option key while the computer turnes on, let go of the option key once you get a grey screen. Shortly after you'll see  a list of bootable drives, select the one that has your time machine back up on it and boot into that drive.
From there go into disk utility, format your new drive too, osx extended journaled ( I think, double check that, its been awhile since ive had to do this), hit format
Exit disk utility and then you can use time machine to copy all your exisit data to the new hhd and then your pretty much done.
There is also a program called Carbon Cloner that will do esentially the same thing however I've never uesed it.

  • How do I remove one failing hard drive from raid set and replace with new one

Last Friday apparently one of my raid drives started failing.
As I mentioned on this forum I started getting continous beeping.
I was finally able to get the raid working at a degraded level.  I ordered a replacement hard drive which is arriving today.
(In the meantime I made twice daily backups of my work.....)
Below was the message I got from the browser based raid software:
    Blahblah 09    1000.2GB   RaidSet Member SamSung HD103SJ
    Blahblah 10    1000.2GB     Free                 SamSung HD103SJ

(See this earlier thread if you wish!)
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/727867?tstart=0
At one point when I did the checked the browser interface I saw the message Failed and Degraded
As I said, I was able to work over the weekend on the degraded system.
This morning I got the beeping again and did the rescue and now I am running a "full raid" without the notice that one raid was "Free".
In any case, the new hard drive is arriving today.
What steps should I take to incorporate the new drive into the raid system.
    I have one OS drive
and 4 tb raid drives.   One needs to be replaced with the new one that I am getting today.
    Thanks

    Harm,
    Regarding your comment:
Re: How do I remove one failing hard drive from raid set and replace with new one
Please tell me how to read the serial number from an individual drive rather easily, without un-installing them:
If you select the proper drive to change out, you only need to remove one drive and look at its serial number...
Step 1: Identify bad drive serial number using Areca's tools
Step 2: Turn off the computer
Step 3: Remove what you think is the bad drive based on following your numbered cable method, marked hot-swap bays, whatever
Step 4: Verify that the serial number matches the "bad drive" serial number from step 1; if it does great, proceed; if it does not match, go back to step 3
Step 5: Change out the CORRECT drive - that's the bottom line for this whole procedure
    Cheers,
    Jim
