Replacing Dying Hard Drive

My hard drive has been acting funky, so I booted to the startup disk, and sure enough, the Disk Utility finds errors and can't fix them. Such is life, I have my data backed up all over the place.
So I'm going to be replacing the hard drive, which is no big deal, I am a PC tech, though there is no diagram in the manual showing where it is, I'm sure I'll find it.
One question is specifications. Can I replace this 4200 RPM with a 7200 RPM or will that cause problems (ie. laptop not giving it enough power to spin up, or generating too much heat)?
*So, anyone replaced their hard drive with a significantly better one, specifically fast spin speed, and ran into problems?*
*And is there a service manual or technical diagrams for taking appart your iBook out there?*

Well, it's done. I followed these directions form iFixit.com site.
BEFORE DOING STEP 30 (removing upper case) READ step 31 and 32 carefully. I did not do that and ended up pulling the connector for the power cable off the motherboard. The connectors were stuck together extremely tight. After an extremely nervous repair job (very small parts), the damage is repaired.
There were some differences between those instructions and my iBook 1.42 GHz 14".
In step 9, the bolts on the bottom of the iBook require a T9 (not T8).
In step 35, there is not a yellow cable to disconnect.
In step 36-7, a y-shaped bracket must be removed before the hard drive could be removed. The edge of the bracket blocks the hard drive from being lifted out.
The hard drive in my iBook lifted out from the end instead of the side. You must lift the end toward the edge of the iBook. Then slide the hard drive toward the edge of the iBook to dislodge it from the connector.
The plastic block on the drive's connector, the side brackets, and bolts for side brackets must be removed from the old drive and installed on the new drive.
After I got it all snapped together and booted, I realized that the clicker (mouse button) would not work. I dismantled it enough to dislodge the top case and then the clicker was working. Assembled the iBook again while periodically checking the operation of the clicker.
All working now! It took about 2.5 hours even with the repair.

  • Replaced dying hard drive, can't boot into installer

    Well, this is always fun.
My hard drive was dieing in my 12-inch Powerbook (last-model, I believe), so I ordered a bigger one and just finished installing it.
So, I try to boot to my 10.5 installer disk, and it gets to the Apple logo for about a minute, occasional DVD drive noise, and then freezes. Even the little spinny thing stops spinning. Sometimes there are vertical, dotted lines running through the darker areas, sometimes not.
It was doing this when my previous hard drive was dieing, and that was on 10.4. I can now and could then log into single-user mode, but no GUI. I've tried everything I can think of, and nothing's worked thus far.
Any help? My laptop is completely dead without an OS, and I've got school work and a programming internship that largely rely on my laptop.

I'm really ashamed of these forums. Doesn't anyone here even know how to ask intelligent questions?
I managed to rip apart some of the info from the Single User mode, purchased a new set of OS disks, ran the hardware test, and discovered the video RAM had failed the test.
ANY of those should have been suggested by someone with some repair knowledge. Non-booting? Did you ask about the hardware test built into the OS disks? Noooo, I had to find that out , and run it, myself. Problem not solved by replacing hard drive? Gee...
Strange vertical lines on a boot screen where there shouldn't be any? Mayhaps it's video related? Hmmm? Even if you were wrong, it'd have been SOMETHING to try, instead of silence.
Maybe I should just amble around here and show you people how to help people. I've had almost NO help (often no replies, either) for most of my questions on this forum, despite offering more information than most, and I ultimately have solved most of them myself, when they didn't resolve themselves.

My hard drive continually has the floating beach ball and will take massive time to fulfill a request. And then will not boot up...so then I have to do a restore and rebuild hard drive from a past saved time machine version. Works for a little bit...then the floating beachball comes more and more...until it will not boot up again. So then I restore from a previous time machine saved version....and again it works for a day or so ... until it happens again. Now it's happening faster and faster...so I think my hard drive is dying.

I had to replace my hard drive on my mac book pro as it had died. Since getting laptop repaired I have been trying to sync my iphone with the new hard drive but it will not allow me to do this without first wanting to wipe the phone clean and put info on the hard drive onto the phone, of course there is no info on the hard drive at all. Any help will be greatly recieved.

  • Should I replace failed hard drive in imac 4,1 or run from external or mac mini?

My hard drive failed in my iMac 4,1 (early 2006 intel). I am running from an external drive, but slow. Should I replace the hard drive ($300 at Apple), purchase a better external to run from or a mac mini? I'm trying to determine if it makes sense to invest further in this iMac since its 5 yrs old already. Can any one offer some insight/opinion?

    Hi moreenie
Your profile does not indicate your geographic location, but there are Authorize Apple Service Providers that can and will do the work for considerably less than your local Apple Store.
    http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
Call around, at less than $200 to replace the Hard Drive, it makes a little more sense to fix and use it for another year or two...
I replace the Hard Drive in my Early 2006 a couple of years ago not because it died, but because it became to small.
Sorry I can't honestly help you decide, because I'm torn and can't decide for myself. Not liking the Glossy iMac's, I've also been toying with the idea of either a Mac-Mini or used Mac Pro? My biggest problem with the Mac-Mini is, that by the time you do a few upgrades it cost as much as a base iMac.

  • Replaced my hard drive and now have no iphoto. Do I now need to purchase it?

Replaced my hard drive after it totally died. Recovered most of the data, but now there is no IPhoto. Do I now need to purchase ILife?

If iPhoto was included with the Mac then the disks that came with your MBP will have a Software Install disk that you can use to do a custom install of just iPhoto or whatever iApp you need. The disk may be like one of these:

  • How do I Get my library back on I tunes? I had to replace my hard drive.

I had to replace the hard drive of my macbook. Now when I open itunes, it is completely empty! is there anyway to get my music back or atleast the music I purchased from itunes? I can access my account it shows record of my purchases, but my library is completely empty.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.

  • How do I authorise my Imac for Itunes after replacing the hard drive?

    Dear All,
Apologies, but I am new to forums and understand that the issue of "Authorisation" of Itunes purchases and rentals has been done to death!  However, I have tried everything and have exhausted normal research on the Net, there doesnt seem to be standard sollution to my problem.   I have replaced the Hard Drive in my Imac 2008 with an SSD which makes the Imac very fast and effcient and completely clean of the usual trash in an old computer. So before renting my first movie, I did the following:..................................
Formatted the hard drive and downloaded and upgraded to OSX to 10.5.8 (the latest I can go on this Imac (I think) Intel 3.06Ghz 2 core and 4GB SSDRAM)
Upgraded Itunes to the latest available
Upgraded Quicktime to the latest available.
I rented a film which will not play and initially I got the "not authorised on this computer" message which kept repeating despite saying it was "waiting"
So I did the usual apple support search and tried the following:..................................
I checked that my apple User ID and password where up to date and that I was purchasing on the right ID
Tried the standard.....Itunes/Store/Authorise this computer  -  tried unauthorising and then re-authorising No luck
I tried deleting the  (/Users/Shared/SC info) file  No luck
I tried the Terminal based solution  "sumo chmod -R 777 /Shared/Users" fix It didnt work either
I don't get the authorisation warning any more but just get a black screen with a grey horizontal stripe across the middle
I would be very grateful if somene could give me another sollution to try............................
    Thank you very much,
    Sfithy

Double & triple check that you installed the hard drive correctly.

  • Can I replace internal hard drive using only my system recovery disc?

Hello Everyone and thank you so much for your help!
I have a Vista Desktop and have determined that I need to replace the hard drive.
I am hoping that I can set the jumper pin on the new hard drive to primary, remove the old drive, install the new drive and turn on the computer with the System Recovery (SR) Disc in my DVD drive, boot off of the SR Disc, and run the SR.  Will this work or am I just dreaming?
On thing that might cause issues is that the original hard drive is 640GB, and it is no longer available, so the new one I have is 500GB..Everything else about the 2 drives is the same.  Old drive: WD6400AAKS, New Drive: WD5000AAKS.
Thank you extra much for any advise you can provide!
    Cindy
P.S.. In case it would be helpful to know why I think I need to replace the hard drive...in the mornings when I go to turn the computer on, the hard drive activity light never flashes even a single time and the computer doesn't boot.  Through trial and error I have figured out that by doing this:
    1) removing power from the computer
    2) disconnect then reconnect both connectors to the hard drive
    3) reconnect power to the computer
    4) depress the computer On button
that  the computer will boot and all is good for the day.  However, I turn off the computer at night and the next morning have to follow the above procedure.  Only removing power from the computer for 30+ minutes does not work, it seems to be necessary to disconnect the hard drive connectors.
This all started at the same time I got a virus on the computer that I was supposedly able to remove.
I have done the following to try to resolve the problem with no success:
    1) Ran the diagnostics and passed all Tests, tests say hard drive is okay. (day 1)
    3) Cleared the CMOS by removing the battery on mother board (day 1)
    2) Did a System Recovery (day 2)
    3) Ran Boot.exe /FixMbr (day 3)
    4) Ran Boot.exe /FixBoot (day 4)
    5) Ran Boot.exe/rebuild bcd (day 5)
I am thinking I must also have a virus on the boot sector that did not get written over when I did the System Recover...but I am a novice computer geek, so I know I could have missed something. :-)

Its easy Pal! You check your HDD first but not in the way you did. Just follow the steps with your old HDD.
    1. Try a clean install(delete the partitions while installing OS) of other OS like linux or XP or Windows 7.
    2. If it works properly the your HDD is OK.
    3. Then work for some days with the OS installed to check the condition of HDD.
    4. If any problem happens then you need to buy a new one or if its recently bought, go for RMA.
    5. If there is no problem, then do a clean install(delete the partitions while installing OS) with your Vista Recovery.
    6. Use a Better Security with MSE/Avira/Trand Micro
For Replacing with a different HDD, you must consult nearest HP Service Point for the change in your hardware configuration, so that they will register with Microsoft with the new HDD.
Note: Give the old and new HDD to HP Service Point employee.

I replaced the hard drive to a 30gig on my Ipod 4th gen. click wheel but it is still not recognized on my computer or in itunes......I get an error message with a folder and "!"....what can I do to fix??

Have you recharge the battery for at least 2 hours, or just leave it connected for 4 hours?
(When you replaced the Hardisk, you should also replace the battery.)
Some other iPod SSD sites, says that you may have to format the CF in FAT32, as Mac dont read NTFS drive so if Windows is the 1st PC that your CF is connected, it may be formatted to NTFS.
You can try erasing the CF using Disk Utilty, so that Mac can recognise it. (but not Windows)
    Have a nice day!

  • Can I replace 500GB hard drive in 1st generation time capsule?

I have a first gen Time Capsule with a 500GB hard drive.  It is out of warranty but before I crack the case I would like to know if there is anything special about replacing the hard drive with a new 2 TB HD.  Is there a preferred imaging software for a time capsule HD replacement?

I have avoided buying advanced format drives ever since i saw the issue..
But I should have also commented do a search for any drive you find and see if some other guinea pig has installed the particular drive you are looking at in a series 1.. note carefully the different series respond differently.. and actually series 1 seems to be more tolerant.. later series 2 and 3 can pose big problems when people have tried 3TB drives or advanced format drives.
IMHO you want to buy drives that you KNOW are going to work.. I know a drive will work because it is NOT advanced format.. which is just a way for the scum bag hard drive companies to get more capacity out of less disk space. It has no advantage to end users.
The series 4 TC uses advanced drive.. you can see it in all its glory sitting there smugly in the picture.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4577/airport-extreme-5th-gen-and-time-capsule-4th- gen-review-faster-wifi-/4
BTW after you spend all this money do you realise you will still have a substandard TC. not dual band.. not even N full .. it is still I think only N draft.
A new 2TB TC is around $300.. look at the price you are going to pay for a 2TB drive.. and do you know what could happen.. the power supply of the TC will fry.. as they are awful prone to do. If you ebay the TC you will get $100 or so back for it.
It is a good time to buy brand new TC with bare drives so expensive.

  • HT204053 I recently replaced the hard drive on my Windows 7 computer and lost all of my music content. It should be on the iCloud, however. How can I get it back to iTunes? Can I "reverse-synch" and send it FROM my iPhone TO my computer?

I recently replaced the hard drive on my Windows 7 computer and in the process lost all my music. I think it should be on the iCoud. Can I get it back from the iCloud to my computer? Or can I "reverse-synch" FROM my iPhone TO iTunes?

All the music you purchased from iTunes can be re-downloaded, all the music you acquired without purchasing from iTunes can be accessed using Senuti (not free). The combination of these 2 will get your music back.

  • Macbook Pro keeps freezing after replaced the hard drive

    hi there,
recently, my macbook pro (15" 2.53 ghz, 4gb ram, 250gb hdd) hard drive crashed, having no warranty left, i went through all of the troubleshooting but nothing worked. i took it into futureshop and they tried the diagnostic and concluded that the hard drive crashed, and they told me to find a new hard drive in their store and theyll replace it for free (because it only takes a few minutes). i found a 500GB 2.5" SEAGATE hard drive in the store, and they fit it in for me. then i took it home and installed the O/S myself.
IT WORKED GREAT!!!!! but my other hard drive was too corrupt to save any of the data, so i had to start from scratch :/
after about a week or so, my mac gradually starting freezing up more and more, and i was worried because that was the initial problem i had.
its been about a month and a half since the first freeze, and im sick of it! about 4 or 5 times a day, the thing would just stop everything its doing, and the mac wheel would spin for about 30 seconds or so froze,, and then go back to normal.
whats confusing is that when im on skype and the mac freezes, i can still talk to the person from voice to voice, but EVERYTHING else just stops lik my itunes and the words im typing.
SO PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS ISSUE ITS KILLING ME!!!!
i am willing to do anything or even replace my hard drive again just to fix this problem, so please your help would be greatly appreciated!
    THANKS !!!

    Hi r,
Why not bring it back to the place you bought the HD and have them test it? If it is the HD, many places will give you a new HD if it has been under a certain time period (often 30 days), otherwise you may have to send it in to Seagate for a warranty replacement.
