Replacing Files in OSX

Hi,
Recently i've overwritten some of my personal files which are 1-2gb each with a new one from my other computer, after I replaced it, it seems that my hard drive goes down about the same amount while the updated file is only few mbs extra, it it supposed to take up double the space if I replace something? or will it automatically clean up?

Try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Error 7 occurred at open/create/replace file

    Hello,
I have searched the forum and could not find any useful information regarding my problem, so hope you may shed some light. MyVI can create a new csv (text) file by using the time to name the file, so every time the new file will be created with a different name and file path is not a relative path. I can run the VI in both development environment and stand along executable without any problem. But,
One of my colleagues  cannot run the executable exe on her machine because Error 7 occurred at Open/Create/Replace File in xxxx.vi Possible reason: LabVIEW: File not found. The file might be in a different location or deleted. Use the command prompt or the file explorer to verify that the path is correct.
My question is why only she cannot run this exe on her machine. I have checked a few different PC in my office and all of them can run this exe without problem, so I am pretty sure the code is fine.
I have already ask her to do,
    Run the executable as administrator
Save the new file to other drives (not C: drive)
but she still cannot run the executable. I dont think this is a premission issue, otherwise, LabVIEW would give a different error, Error 8 I believe.
Both her PC and my PC is running Windows 7 professional 64-bit. The only difference I can see is that she is based in US and I am based Australia. Does anyone have any idea? Please help.
    Thanks,
    Sherman

I’m not sure but expecting like below,
As you said, your creating file name with Time. Make sure file name is correct and there is no special characters (like, / or : ). If your formatting time to string with “Format Date/Time String.vi” (while creating file name), based on UTC format, string will change.
UTC format specifies if the output string is in Universal Time or in the configured time zone for the computer. If TRUE, date/time string is in Universal Time. The default is FALSE.
Make sure you have access rights to create files into mentioned folder. Try to create new file manually.

  • Error 6 occurred at Open/Create/Replace File in NI_Excel.lvclass:Save Report to

I have an application that works on LV60 and when run in LV86 I get the following error:
    Error 6 occurred at Open/Create/Replace File in NI_Excel.lvclassave Report to File.vi->SWF001 Test.vi
    Possible reason(s):
    LabVIEW: Generic file I/O error.
    =========================
    NI-488: I/O operation aborted.
    C:\SWF001 IO Files\1_Single.xls
    The application does:
    New Report.vi
    Excel Get Worksheet.vi
    Excel Easy Table.vi
Excel Easy Text.vi (4 of them)
    Save Report to File.vi
    Dispose Report.vi
all in a nice chain (errors and report-in/outs) as is typical
For some reason I'm getting this error. I'm using it with Excel 2003 SP3 and the spreadsheet contains macros (and I get a prompt "should I enable macros:" (I answer yes), that I didn't get with LV60 and the older version of Excel). This is probably not the problem? but deserves mention.
The file does exist on the system (and it appears the application is writing to it successfully - though perhaps truncated as the error indicates- i can't tell for sure).
I can open and save the Excel file independently of LV just fine.
    Any clues?
    Many thanks! -David

Unfortunately, an Error 6 is a catch all category for all sorts of file IO errors that LV doesn't know how to handle. For example, while it doesn't sound like your problem, trying to access a file that resides on a network drive that isn't currently mounted can generate an Error 6.
Have you tried saving the file to a different location?
If you restart your computer and run the VI does it generate the error the very first time you run it?
Can you post your code - or at least a subset of it that demonstrates the problem?
Is Excel open when you are running the code?
Also, as a test try modifying your code so it has a unique name every time you save it.

  • Error 7 occurred at Open/Create/Replace File in Open Config Data.vi

I have a .vi that was working fine with Labview 7.0.  I now have upgraded to Labview Professional 8.0, and I am trying to build a stand alone  executable.  When I build the executable, build an installer, and then try to install it on another computer then run it......... I get the "Error 7 occurred at Open/Create/Replace File in Open Config Data.vi" error.  Any ideas?

    Hello,
In addition to the LabVIEW Help, there is an Application Note on Distributing Applications with the LabVIEW Application Builder and a knowledge base article What Is The Build Specification Feature In Application Builder? that might be helpful.
    Also, here
is a knowledge base article on what Dennis has described and it
provides an example to call an extra Strip Path function. Also, instead
of using a Match Pattern function, you could use the App.Kind property
node (use Open Application Reference, Property Node: Application ->
Kind, and Close Reference) to determine if you are running in a
    Run-time system.

    Hi everyone,
can anyone help me with this problem?
"error 5 occurred at Open/Create/Replace File in Write spreadsheet String.vi "
I've been using this part of the program for over a year an suddenly this error occures. But not always, mainly at the very beginning of my tests when the file should not be open.
Info: I'm using a realtime PXI-System. Maybe the amount of data can cause the problem? (about 2MB)

    Hi Meike,
is the file opened by a different program? Do you try to access it by FTP in parallel to your VI?
You could use basic file functions instead of WriteSpreadsheetFile. That way you could open the file before starting the loop, keep it open all the time and close it once you're finished - with the added benefit of easier error handling…

  • Problems with replace file name with starting and ending Bates number

When applying Bates numbers to a set of Acrobat pdf files I am unable to replace file names with the starting and ending Bates number. This is important
for me in a legal application.
The Bates numbers are applied to each page of each of file without any problem as required.
The Bates log file indicates that the files have been renamed as I wanted.
I am running Adobe Acrobat Professional 9 with the update to 9.1.9 and Windows XP Service Pack 3 (the last or current service pack)
In all other respects Adobe Acrobat 9 is running to my satisfaction.
Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

Thanks for asking the question, I hadn't heard of Bates numbers before and this gave me a chance to look up something new.
When I googled for ' bates number legal index ' I found this document:

  • Bug in Open/Create/Replace File

I found this problem in LabVIEW 2009. The boolean indicator doesn't seem to work properly in the first snippet. It returns TRUE even with a valid path. With some trial and error I found a workaround that will make it work properly for now. I just wire an Error Out after the Open/Create/Replace File (second snippet). Is this a bug?? Am I doing something wrong??
I've got a lot of code that uses this to test to check for existing files and then wire the output to a case statement. I also know there is a Check if File/Folder Exists.vi available. I would hate to spend a lot of time changing all my code if this is a known bug and it will be fixed in the next update. If it is not a know bug, where can I submit this??

Its not a bug. You have race condition between indicator and close ref.

  • Individually Password protected files from OSX 2.8 not opening in OSX 4.6

I have a few files that I password protected in OSX2.8 that will not open now in OSX 4.6. The are not part of the vault type protection. It seems that the feature of individually password protecting files in the earlier OSX system do not open, nor give the option to even give the password. In the get info window there is no option to change or type in the password. The password is not related to the administrator password and it seems that it was a feature that did not follow through to the later OSX version. The only alternative I can think of is to install OSX 2 on an external and hope it gives me the option.
Does anyone know how to deal with this type of individually protected file in OSX 4.6? I have tried the vault, and the get info, but nothing seems to work to even give me the option to enter a password for an individual file. They are jpeg, and QuickTime, and Photoshop .psd files.
    Any ideas?

Below is the list of steps from the Adobe KB article for installing the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in 6.2 on PSE 8:
Link to the KB article: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/863/cpsid_86312.html#main_Install Camera Raw 6.1 for Photoshop Elements 8 on Mac OS
#Install Camera Raw 6.2 plug-in for Photoshop Elements 8 on Mac OS
Close Photoshop Elements 8 and Bridge CS5.
Download Camera Raw_6_2.dmg from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4809. Opening the downloaded file mounts the disc image containing the following two files:  Camera Raw.plug-in and cameraprofiles.mpkg.
Put the new version of the Camera Raw.8bi file that was downloaded into the same location as the original version.
Navigate to the root of the local disk (not your home folder).
Navigate to the following location: Applications/PSE8/Plug-Ins/File Formats.
Move the original plug-in from the location listed in step 5 to a backup location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure that you keep this version in case you want to revert.
Copy the downloaded copy of the Camera Raw plug-in into the installation location listed under step 6.
Launch Photoshop Elements 8 or Adobe Bridge CS5.
To install Camera Profiles, double-click CameraProfiles.mpkg and then follow the on-screen instructions
Are you following the steps as mentioned above?

  • Is there a "replace files" bug in iTunes?  Plays fine in iTunes- not on Pod

Hello, all. Long story short, I'm re-ripping all my CDs at a higher bit rate. I'm going from 128 Kbps AAC to 192 Kbps AAC (variable bit rate.) Now I'm having issues.
So far, when iTunes asks me if I want to replace my existing files before I rip, I say "yes," but now I'm wondering if that's a big mistake due to a bug in iTunes. Why? Well, although the newly ripped album plays fine in iTunes and through my iPod (using it as a hard drive through the computer), once I disconnect my iPod and make it portable, the iPod will skip track #2 (for example) of a 9 track cd.
I've reset my iPod - no change.
I've deleted the album from my iPod and dragged it back on there - no change.
I'm trying to track down the root of the problem. The replacement file is obviously fine, and even plays in another media player. Someone said "replacing" files is bad because iTunes doesn't replace gapless playback information, and it uses old data for your newly sized files. Is that the root of my problem? Does iTunes have a "replace existing files" bug? It's the only thing I can think of. A solution would be to have iTunes re-analyze all my iTunes tracks for gapless playback and other data, but that doesn't seem to be an iTunes option. Any ideas? Re-ripping the cd is not an option. (But for all you whistle blowers, rest assured it was a cd I bought, so everything is legal.)
5th gen iPod with video   Windows XP   iTunes 7.1.1.5

Have you updated your iPod and iTunes sofware?
most cases, iTunes can play these high quality songs, which is meant for newer mobile devices like  iPhones, iPod Touch, nano and iPad, which the older iPod cant play, but only playable with iPod classic sofware version 2.0.4
most likely it is an incompatible song format, read this Apple support article.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1334?viewlocale=en_USet
If  your iPod software is version 1.1.2, then you have to use lower quality format.
Can you select the problematic song, and Advance -> create iPod version

  • Beware Moving Files in OSX Lion

Anybody having problems moving files in OSX Lion?  I tried to move some files from my Downloads folder to a USB Flash Drive and it looked like the file moved successfully but the file doesn't exist in either my USB Flash Drive nor my Downloads folder.  The files just disappeared.
The only way to fix this problem is to reboot the machine.  Eventually, the OS will get back into this state and you won't know it until you try to move some files and end up losing them instead.  This is the third time this has happened to me since upgrading to OSX Lion.

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • How to use Open/Create/Replace File.vi

How to change Open/Create/Replace File.vi to Open File?

Use the routine Write Characters to File.vi found under the File IO palette. It has a boolean control on the front panel. If this is set true, data is appended to the end of an existing file, or a new one is created if the file doesn't exist. If the control is set to false, the file is always created new--overwriting any existing file with the same name.

  • Odd Open/Create/Replace File Behaviour

    Hi all,
I will make my question as general as possible as I believe someone must have come accross this behaviour before. I am using the Open/Create/Replace File function to programmatically open a file, by giving a path input created in an earlier vi. The odd behaviour I observe is that although Labview returns Error 1 when I give my file programmatically, it reads the file OK if I give it as a constant. The path constant I give is exactly the same as the one I am tryinng to give programmatically.
Any suggestions? Is it to do with some string formatting problem? I have attached my portion of VI dealing with the path_in section.
    Thanks for your time,
    Regards,
    Harry

Wild guess: You need to use "build path" instead of "concatenate strings" to built the path.
(Also use a path diagram constant (not a string!) for "c:\ni-rt\" and get rid of the "trim whitespace" and "string to path".)
See if it makes a difference. (build path is OS independent while string operations are not).
Never operate on paths as strings. There are very few instances where that would be appropriate.

  • Modification to Open/Create/Replace file vi in Labview

I'm a relative newbie to LabView so this modification described below is a daunting task for me, given the complexity of the block diagram in the Open/Create/Replace file vi .
I want to change the dialog box and choices when you have selected a file that already exists from Replace or Cancel as the only 2 options to:
ReplaceFile  AddToExistingFile  RePromptForANewFile QuitApplication  (this 4 option choice is my first preference)
    or at minimum
ReplaceFile  AddToExistingFile  Cancel (adding AddToExistingFile as an option)

First of all, you should know that playing with the VIs supplied with LV is not always a good idea and open\create\replace is an example for a particularly not-good-for-editing VI. In any case, you should not overwrite the original.
In this case, you can use Edit>>Find to find the 2 button dialog you're seeing. When I look at where it's located, it's enough to discourage any thought about changing the VI. At the moment it has a single output (overwrite?). You could replace it with a subVI which will have all your buttons, but you will need to add code to handle the extra buttons, which can be very dangerous.
You may wish to create a much simpler logic instead which will do what you want yourself (using the VIs in the File I/O>>Advanced palette, like Open File and File properties), which will probably be safer.
Try to take over the world!
