Doesn't matter, CCC can be set to replace drive contents, so if you're okay with replacing teh drive, CCC will be able to handle that.
thats why i was asking if i would "physically" just take the disk from one mac to another.... would it work? wont it have hardware issues or will it detect them by itself?
A harddrive is a harddrive, they work on any System as long as it's physically compatable for the most part, as long as both Macs are Intel based, they should have the same partitioning type and it will work. The OS X version and things like that are on the hard drive, the actual computer doesn't have any info on it.
wont there be any limitations? because one mac has 10.5.8 and the other has 10.6.5
will the os system function on the other maschine without any problems?
Again, the computer itself doesn't know/care about teh OS version, that's just on the HD, as long as the computer would be able to handle 10.6.5 there's no issues.
(but why is the dvd disk of the macbook pro 13 refused when i put it into the macbook pro 15?)
What do you mean refused? What message did it give you?

  • Moving Hard Disk From one Mac to Another

I am thinking of buying a new macbook. I have the C2D 2.16 Ghz right now. So if I would buy, lets say the new 2.4 Ghz model, could I just take the hard disk from the one I use now and put it into to the new Macbook?
    Would it boot up?
    Thanks!

As i understand you already have a MacBook and your thinking of buying a new one, to witch you want to have all your present data.
Instead of removing the physical HD from one and reseating it in another you cloud try one of these options out:
    1.
If you have 10.5 on your present MacBook you might think of using TimeMachine:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15638.html
-great feature restores your whole system as you see it
    2.
You have a utility called Migration Assistant, you´ll find this in Applications>Utility folder:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1554?viewlocale=en_US
    3.
Use a firewire cable to transfere the information you need.
    Best of luck.

  • How do I copy a home made HD video file (MP4 codec) of 10 GB from an external hard disk to my Mac Book Pro? Thanks

How do I copy a home made HD video file (MP4 codec) of >10 GB from an external hard disk to my Mac Book Pro? Thanks

I will never know if the problem was one of transfer or format compatibility.  The movie would not copy from one external hard diask to another, both attached to my MAC. But when the movie (which was in mpg by the way) was downloaded directly (without any other intermediary) into my external disk from the computer (a PC) where the movie was originated, the file did copy. And when I attached that external hard disk to my MAC, i could see it  using the MPEC streamclip app.
    Thank you anyway!

Open it up. Buy a new replacement drive. Install Mac OS. Then give it to them if you still have trouble.
    As for the install failing,
I never do the older "archive and install"
I format and initialize first, even zero the drive, and only then install.
of course all the data is lost.
Data Rescue 3 demo can scan a drive but you need to have setup a 2nd boot drive to work from, AND you would need part of that 2nd drive partition for recovery of data. 30-50GB system partition and 150% the size of the drive you want to recover.
TimeMachine I never adopted or liked but 350% and would only use as secondary backup with cloned copy of your drive.
Backups can be scheduled, run at night or weekend or both, a weekly clone and daily sets.
Disk Warrior 4.2+ is another $100 (DR3 is about same but demo is free to try).
A spare external drive case $30? and TWO hard drives, a replacement and backup/recovery $100 each?
Just some ideas to throw out there....
Bootable clones though you will find are very useful, handy.
I like the small 40GB emergency boot partition - put one on your TimeMachine drive etc.
LION: the one good thinig: it has a recovery mode partition and new Macs have "net install" feature and minimal hardware diagnostic over the internet to do Apple Hardware Test. Lion $30 and might actually want to install it on external.
So DO try installing OS X on one of your external drives - create 40GB volume just for that - if you can please.

  • How to transfer printer settings from one Mac to another (both OSX)?

Hello, I have not found a detailed description on how to transfer printer settings from one Mac to another.
My issue is that I have a Mac G5 with 3 different settings saved as "presets" for the same printer. This works great, since the posters I print (on the large format printer) need different margins and different paper at times.
This G5 is basically retired and only used for printing. G5 has OSX 10.3.9
I have a MacPro as its replacement (OSX 10.4.11).
The MacPro has all my apps and other settings setup to my liking.
I found several links via Google saying copy this folder or directory, but I am not sure I did it correctly. I don't see the "presets".
I tried launching the Migration Assistant (I hope that's the correct name), but was concerned the settings on the new MacPro would be overwritten with ALL the old stuff on the older G5. I did not start the transfer process because of this.
If someone would list the steps needed to accomplish the transfer of printer settings or advise if this is possible, then I would be very grateful! The previous user of the G5 I am using was a "Genius" and I don't know how he created these "preset" choices.
    Thanks!

Hi SCChelpdesk, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I found several links via Google saying copy this folder or directory, but I am not sure I did it correctly. I don't see the "presets".
This is the File that holds that info on Tiger, not certain on Panther...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.print.custompresets.plist
After moving, you very well might have to change the Owner's Permissions within Get Info window, then log out/in.
I tried launching the Migration Assistant (I hope that's the correct name), but was concerned the settings on the new MacPro would be overwritten with ALL the old stuff on the older G5. I did not start the transfer process because of this.
MA would transfer the info, but/and, if the user that had that info had the same Shortname as on the new one, it'll demand you give it a new Shortname to use... but then those settings would be transferred to that new user on the new machine. I think the 1st one will work though.
The previous user of the G5 I am using was a "Genius" and I don't know how he created these "preset" choices.
We can go through that way if you like... not all that hard.

  • Move stickie file from one mac to another, move stickie file from one mac to another, How do I move stickie file from one mac to another

How do you transfer the stickie data file from one mac to another?

I think this is the file -
In (hard drive) > Users > yourhomefolder (the one with the house icon) > Library, look for a loose file named StickiesDatabase
Copying that file to the same location on the new machine (and replacing the file there now) should move the notes. It is probably a good idea that both machines be running the same OS X version.

  • I change iMac hard disk from basic to dynamic in windows 7

I change iMac hard disk from basic to dynamic in windows 7, after restart windows I saw that there is not any OS X for selecting by press and hold "Option" key.
I don't have any backup and the original DVD from the seller. I live in Iran and here there is no any Apple seller or supporting center.
What should I do to have OS X again ?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You probably erased the hard drive by doing that. If you have got a Mid 2010 or later iMac, you can use Internet Recovery to reinstall OS X > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 Hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your computer is starting.
Then, open Disk Utility, choose your hard drive at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase it in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
If you have got an older Mac, call Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

  • Can anyone tell me how to save a project in i-movie from one Mac to another? Thanks

Can anyone tell me how to save a project from one Mac to another I can save and copy 'events', but the 'projects' won't open, thanks

    Hi
iMovie'08 - NO - Projects can not be moved - As far as I know
You need iMovie'09 or 11 where both Events and Projects can be moved.
DO NOT move or alter any folder named
    • iMovie Projects - or -
    • iMovie Events
on DeskTop/Finder - Else they will not work and in some cases it is un-repairable !
Moving has to be done inside iMovie Application.
AND You need an in between storage eg an external hard disk and here are an IMPORTANT MUST
    • it MUST BE Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will not work FOR VIDEO
    • Should be a FireWire one - As USB/USB2 performs badly especially when filling up and when editing HD-video.

3.are there any ways to retrive the data from the old hard disk. You can try putting it in an external enclosure to see if it can be read from the OS of another PC you have access to. There is no guarantee that it wil work.
4.what are all the reason why my hard disk get destroyed? Sadly,It just happens. That is why many of us back up important information to an external hard disk.
please identify your notebook with the p/n from the barcoded sticker on:
the bottom of your notebook or on the first screen of the BIOS.
Please post that information here and I will be able to provide you with more information
If you notebook is still in warranty the hard drive can be replaced as a warranty item (at no cost  to you for the part).

  • Transfer from one mac to another mac

i am trying to transfer all itunes files from one mac to another one via a hard disk

    try this script:
    iTunes Track CPR v1.3
This script attempts to locate the files of so-called "dead tracks"--iTunes tracks designated with (!)--that you assume are not actually missing but are still located in the iTunes Music folder in their "iTunes File Order" (Music -> Artist -> Album -> file.xxx)."

  • Migrating from one Mac to Another

    [Short Version
    Problem:
Need to move photos from G4 ibook to Intel macbook. Both run 10.5, so I assume iphoto 09. I don't know, because I don't use iPhoto. I use photoshop.
I would be happy to settle for extracting image files that can be imported into the new computer... but this process seems to fail each time.
    attempted solutions:
copy "iPhoto Library" from pictures folder to hard drive, import on new computer.]
    Detailed version:
I'm sure this has been asked before, as people tend to upgrade computers from time to time.
However, I've searched the boards and google for a half hour or so with mixed results.
A friend of mine has an old G4 ibook that she has recently replaced with a new intel macbook. Both run Leopard.
She would like to get rid of the G4, but can't figure out how to move her iPhoto library (or even the pictures without albums, etc.) from one mac to another.
She attempted to copy the iPhoto library in the G4 to an external drive, then attempted to import the library into the new macbook. This didn't work, files show up in the database, but will not open. They appear to be .jpg files, or at least have that extension.
My suggestion was that she use the File > Export command, but she can't seem to get that to work either. I'm not sure if she selected the correct options, both during export from the old system and import from the new system.
Another option that we haven't tried is to "Option + start iPhoto" trick, similar to my current iTunes setup (home LAN vs away) to access two libraries. To specify, holding option while launching iphoto then selecting the old iPhoto library that has been copied to an external.
Has anyone had success moving photos from one mac to another?
thanks in advance for the help.

1 - OS version and iPhoto versions have little to do with each other - OS X 10.5 will run iPhoto 4, iPhoto 5, iPhoto 6, iPhoto '08 and iPhoto '09 - you have to look at the program and see what version it is
2 - If you move the entire iPhoto library intact as a single entity between the same version of iPhoto or to a newer version everything is automatic - you can not go backwards (iPhoto '08 can not read an iPhoto '09 library)
3 - you can always select the photos and export them (file menu ==> export)
4 - you can get the originals by right clicking (control clicking) on the iPhoto library and selecting show package contents (iPhoto '08 and '09 - not knowing the version involved makes this much more difficult) and copying the originals folder and moving it
Has anyone had success moving photos from one mac to another?
Thousand (probably millions) of people - if you know the versions involved you just drag it over and launch iPhoto
Another option that we haven't tried is to "Option + start iPhoto" trick, similar to my current iTunes setup (home LAN vs away) to access two libraries. To specify, holding option while launching iphoto then selecting the old iPhoto library that has been copied to an external.
This does not copy a library - it repoints iPhoto to a different library if the version are compatible (and may convert it to a newer version)
Basically you have not described the most critical piece of information - the iPhoto version on each computer

  • Error - #10008 Replace hard disk 1

I am pretty sure my hard drive has gone bad from other posts I have been reading.
I dont need any data off of this device.  I actually was just about to start deleting old data so I could give this device to a family in need.  Went to start the computer to start this process.  However, when I went to do this it went to BSOD.  Messed with it a little bit, then I got BSOD.  I fillany figure out to run test and got the #10008 replace hard disk 1 error.
As I would still like to give this family this laptop, my question is:  Where could I buy a cheap replacement hard drive.  Is it hard to do? And I dont think I have a back up/ install disk to but on operating system.  What would I need to do to get that going and would it be affordable.
I am totally willing to put in the work to get it back up and going, but was woundering if anyone would be willing to give me some instruction on how to do this.
Thanks a million for any advice and help.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Regarding reinstalling the OS on  the new HDD, here are two options.
    1.  You can order a replacement set of Recovery Discs using the link below - these will reinstall the operating system, all required drivers and nearly all of the original software ( the exception often being trials of MS Office ).  They will also re-create all the original partitions, including the Recovery Partition.
    Order HP Recovery Discs.
    2.  Another option you could consider is to create your own Windows 7 installation disc.
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
An example of a COA Label can be seen Here.
You can create a Windows 7 installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image ( this must be the same version that originally came with your notebook - this is listed as Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit ) from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn ( Note: You may want to de-select the additional software offerings during the installation of ImgBurn ) to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  The Windows Image source is Digital River.
    Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit.
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.
    http://www.kodyaz.com/articles/how-to-activate-windows-7-by-phone.aspx
Additional drivers and software you may need can be found Here.
    Best regards,

  • Can I copy my iTunes from one Mac to another to a distant location?

I have 2 homes one in NYC and the other in upstate NY. I have multiple Macs at both locations all using Snow Leopard and the latest version of iTunes(9). I only have 1 iTunes library I maintain at the upstate location and have to bring my iPod to the NYC location to play my music. Can I not copy my iTunes library to the NYC location using Home Sharing or using some other method? I often forget to bring my iPod and am left without my music.

I would like to know if there's a way to copy my settings from one mac to another? Is there a specific folder for all apps or do I have to find out each and every single file for each app?
    I need the settings for
    System (view, font, color,)
    Finder (view, etc)
iTunes (that include all library, playlists, etc),
    Firefox (Bookmarks, settings & plug-ins),
    Safari (Bookmarks, settings & plug-ins),
    Address Book (contacts)
Thuderbird (emails accounts, contacts, passwords, etc)
Stickies (stickies on the dock - i have info on there unsaved)
    Filezilla (FTP infos)
    Would appreciate.
    Thnx.
All that info is found in your user/library folder, I just did a 60 machine rollout and copied all those settings from user/library, just be forewarned that if you upgrade software those setting will not take on the machine, for example Adobe CS 3,4 will not usable by CS5.  let us know if you need more help.  Also make sure you copy most of your preferences in the user/library/prefences folder.
Note: If you are using an identical backup with all apps and user settings, you can just copy all folders from user to your new home folder.  Remember that only if the image or backup is identical to your production OS.

  • How can I transfer entire contents of Mail mailbox from one Mac to another?

I've long wondered how to do this:
I have two Macs - an iMac and a MacBook Pro.
I have categorized several hundred emails on the MacBook into a separate "mailbox" by itself. Let's just call it "Project XYZ emails" for the sake of discussion.
I need to transfer ALL of those emails +en masse+, hopefully still categorized together into a separate "Project XYZ emails" mailbox file, from the MacBook to the iMac. How is this done?
In the old days, when I used to use Eudora, this was quite simple -- one could physically locate the separate desired "mailbox" file in the Finder and just copy it from one hard drive to the other, and then place the mailbox into the appropriate place of Eudora's file structure on the second computer. Relaunch Eudora and voila, the new mailbox is there for viewing, etc.
But in Mail, I can't find any tangible "file" on my hard drive that represents a "mailbox" in the Mail program. And that includes control-clicking the application file itself and choosing "Show Package Contents." When I do that, I can see, after burrowing into the folders, a single large file called "Mail" which I think contains ALL mailboxes lumped together. But I can't see a way to separate them for individual manipulation.
Any suggestions or ideas on how to copy entire mailboxes in Mail from one Mac to another?

    Thanks! Seems to have worked.
Once I imported tham, I had to fiddle around renaming mailboxes and "moving" the emails to the desired locations, but that only took a minute. So overall, seems like that's the solution! I only wish that the steps to do this were made clearer by Apple in the Mail "help" menu -- where I couldn't find any mention of how to do this.
A happy ending, in any event.
In case anyone reads this in the future, let me add in the missing steps, to make it perfectly clear:
In Mail, choose 'archive mailbox' from the mailbox menu.
+Copy the newly created archived mailbox file, which will probably be a file with the suffix ".mbox," from the original machine to the second machine.+
On the second machine: In Mail choose 'import mailbox' from the file menu.
+The emails will now appear in a new mailbox in Mail listed under the name "imported" or "import." If desired, either rename the mailbox, or create a new mailbox with the correct name, and "move" all the emails into it.+
    Done!
