Replacing hard drive, best way to transfer?

I bought a new Seagate 640gb, 5400rpm drive today and I was wondering what the best way is to get my data on there. I was going to backup my current drive, take it out, put in the Seagate and use Migration Assistant. Is this a common and safer way, or is there a preferred method? Thanks everyone.

The easiest way would be to put the Seagate in an enclosure, prepare and format it, and then use Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable clone:

Once you have made the bootable clone on the Seagate, you can then boot from it and make sure all is well. Then you can install the Seagate and all your data will be there. It will be an identical copy of your old drive.
If all is not well, that could indicate a problem with the new drive, and you will find that out before you install it.
Good luck!

  • Upgrading Hard Drive, best way to transfer files etc?

    I have a 13" MacBook (White) Intel Core 2 Duo 2Ghz w/ 4G Ram and a 80G HD.
I want to replace the HD (with maybe 320G). What's the best way to seamlessly transfer all my files, setting, applications etc. as easily as possible.
I have Retrospect; can I just duplicate the entire HD to the new drive (by putting it in an external enclosure first) and then take the drive out of the enclosure and drop it in to the computer. Will all the OS settings, preferences transfer properly?
I'm trying to avoid having to manually mover over a lot of settings, or reinstall printer drivers etc if possible!
Thanks for any help or suggestions

I'm not familiar with Retrospect. Does it make a bootable clone? Can you attach your backup to your MacBook and use it as the startup disk? If so, make the backup onto the new drive and test it. Then put it into your MacBook using [These Instructions|http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbook13_mem_hdm>. (The video shows RAM and HD installation) If you're careful and follow the steps, you won't hurt your MacBook. If you don't feel confident with the procedure, get outside help.
If the Retrospect backup is not bootable, better use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner instead.

  • Swapping Hard Drive: Best way to go?

Soon I plan on swapping my 160 GB hard drive out for a 500 GB hard drive. I have a 120 GB Mac partition and a 40 GB Boot Camp partition on it.
I want to transfer everything to a my new hard drive, and I want the partitions to be 420 GB / 80 GB.
I have a 1 TB USB external drive that I'm currently using for Time Machine backups that I can use as the transfer medium.
So, what would be the best method for getting everything to the new drive the way I want it?

I'm not up on Boot Camp, so I don't know how to clone it. But I do know that you can use Super Duper to clone a Mac partition to a partition of another drive.
I wonder if you could format and partition the new drive in the enclosure. Then use Super Duper to clone the Mac partition of your old drive to the larger partition on the new drive. If there is a utility that will clone Boot camp, then you could clone it to the second partition. If there's not a cloning utility for boot camp, I would assume there is still some way to get everything moved over to the new partition.
I have partitioned my boot drive just to see what would happen. It seems like the data stays on one partition and the other partition is empty. This is with 186 GB available on a 250 GB drive. No idea where any of it is on the platter.
I do know that if a drive is partitioned, Super Duper will see each partition as a separate volume to be cloned separately. I don't think it would allow you to clone both partitions at the same time.
What I don't know is anything about Bootcamp and how best to move it over.
Don't know if this helps much--but I hope it does.
    Good luck!

  • New Hard Drive, best way Copy system and files

    Hello All,
I have a brand new harddrive that I want to put in my PB. I put the harddrive in a FW enclosure and installed OSX 10.4 from an install DVD. Looking on this forum for an idea as to how to transfer my system over to the new drive BEFORE putting it in my PB I discovered the existence of SuperDuper.
The problem is that even after searching the forums for much too long, I have yet to find a nuanced answer as to How I should proceed in getting my system copied to the new drive. Should I:
    1) Forget about the bright and shiny new clean install waiting on the new drive and just reformat it and then create a clone using superduper (and the "backup all files" command) on the new drive.
1a) if I do this can I just then take the new drive out of the enclosure and put it in my PB and have it look just like my old drive except with a gajillion more bytes of space that I can put all my new music, photos and podcast on?
    2) Should I use the OS I just installed on the new drive and just copy a standard set of system/preferences/data folders onto the new drive and then take it out of the enclosure and put it in my PB?
    Thanks a million in advance

    A follow up
    1) I downloaded SuperDuper for free.
    2) I put my brand new drive in a FW enclosure, with the Oxford 911 chip set.
    3) I plugged I plugged in the new drive via Firewire. Then used Disk Utility to Erase and Format the new drive using OS extended Journaled.
    4) I then used SuperDuper and the "Backup-All Files" option to Clone my current (old) drive onto the new drive over the FW connection.
    5) Once complete (about two hours, for ~ 70GB) I restarted my computer holding down the option(alt). I selected to boot from the new Hard Drive still connected via FW.
    6) Once I verified that I could boot from the new drive and that it was indeed exactly the same as my current drive, I shut down my computer and went through the process of swapping the new drive out of the FW enclosure and putting it in my PB. (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111925) for an illustrated set of instructions on how to do this.
    7) I just started up my computer and I am writing this post from my now new internal HD that is indistinguishable from the old one, only I have roughly 1 gajillion, billion, more 1's and 0's to order into files of my choosing. I am doing snow angels in 1's and 0's.
I hope this and the answers from dolbinau help the next person who want to do a really easy new Hard Drive install on their G4 Powerbook (Tibook)

  • Best way to replace Hard Drive?

    Hi,
I am ready to replace my hard drive and get a Solid State Drive.
What is the best way to transfer the contents from the old hard drive to the new?
Except from Time Machine (I guess you can do this with time machine... not sure), does Leopard offers any other utility?
    Thanks

There are at least two free utilities for cloning your HD.
    CCC and SuperDuper!
Make a bootable clone of your HD and test it.
Then swap your HDs and reclone the new HD from the clone.
It's that simple, and relatively fast and, unlike TM, you can test the clone beforehand.

  • Best way to transfer data to new internal hard drive

    Hi,
I just got a new internal hard drive for my macbook and I'm trying to figure out the best way to transfer all the data from my old hd to the new one. Basically, I would just like to make an exact copy of my old hd and put it on the new larger one. Thanks for the help.

Will I simply be able to do a firewire transfer on the new internal HD is installed
Yes. Use Carbon Copy Cloner with the sopurce and destination volumes reversed after installing the new drive.
Additionally do I need a bootable copy of OSX on my external HD to do the transfer?
Yes; the clone can act as this copy. If you copy everything with Carbon Copy Cloner, you will be told whether the drive will be bootable or not prior to the clone.

Get a third drive if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, set it not to exclude that drive, and drag the files to it. If you're moving an iTunes or iPhoto library, launch the application with the Option key held down and choose the moved library.

  • What is the easiest way to tell if your time capsule has backed up your hard drive, as my mac has been recalled for a replacement hard drive

Your views would be appreciatted, my imac has recently been recalled for a replacement hard drive, would it be easier just to purchase a external hard drive to be on the safe side for backing up my photos etc?
I have a 1GB time capsule but to be honest not sure how it operates it states it oldest back up is the 11th October
201GB of 998 available or would it best to buy a external hard drive and back up using this.
    thanks
    Benjoe08

    You are very wise.. !!
It can be awfully hard restoring the Mac from TM.. as many posters here have discovered.
IMHO.. for certainty.. get an external drive.. they are not expensive.. do a full backup to it.
I would even download superduper and make a clone of the existing drive and boot from it.. this means when the Mac is returned if all else fails.. you can use the external clone as a boot and have exact OS as you have right now.

  • Best way to transfer disk contents from dead Cube (G4) to new iMac (Intel)

Forgive me if this has been covered before - my search didn't find anything on this particular problem.
My (upgraded, but ancient) Cube finally bit the dust during a power surge/outage at the house. Actually, it was just the power brick that died, but I have ordered a new iMac to replace the Cube. My question is on the best way to transfer the data and info from my old hard drive to the new iMac when it arrives. I am thinking of buying a Firewire or USB enclosure for the Cube's disk (Western Digital 120 GB) and using it as an external drive at the new iMac. Since the Cube is effectively dead, I don't think I can use Migration Assistant, can I? And should this transfer be the first thing I do on the new iMac? I know that many of my apps won't run natively on the Intel iMac, but some will under emulation, so I want to save many of them (Cube was still a G4 PPC). I also want to be able to transfer my iTunes and iPhoto libraries, all my Office files, and other data without having to individually copy them all. Can someone suggest the best course of action?
    Thanks in advance,
    Joe Crabtree

    Hi Joe Crabtree;
Please remember that you are changing from PowerPC to Intel architecture so you will want to install all application on the new iMac and only migrate data files. Migrating applications from PowerPC to Intel is a known way to create problems with your new iMac.

  • What is the best way to transfer my music library from my windows pc to my new macbook air?

what is the best way to transfer my large iTunes library from my windows pc to my new macbook air?  Not all purchased, many from CDs I owned

Moving a library: Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its sub-folders and files) intact to the other drive.  Hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) and open iTunes.  At the prompt to create or choose a library choose the copied iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
