Replacing Hard Drive, Logic Board and Ram due to failure on my iMac

My current mac is crashing and burning, I will be replacing the above components. I trying to backup my system on time machine but I get a message that reads, that Backup FAILED. I am dragging stuff over to my free agent E hard Drive. But, any other suggestions on what I should drag to help me recover stuff when I do get my iMac back? Or, can the system be restored as the way it was before, without time capsule or backup from somewhere else. I have also tried to backup to my other external hard drive, and same issue backup failed. To fix problems I was told to erase and reinstall my system, and then used time machine to bring back my original computer and then was told to erase my time machine to start to a new backup my computer. Hence the the problem. I use my iMac for work, not just to twitter or face book etc. any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Ship going down, but me, the captain will stay aboard.

  • Restoring computer with new hard drive & Logic Board using Time Machine

My MBPro totally crashed and just got it back from Apple with a new hard drive, logic board, optical super drive, one new 1GB ram chip, and a new video display panel. My questions are two fold, first, have I had so much replaced on this machine that I need to use Migration Assistant instead of Time Machine to restore it?
    Second, If I am suppose to be using Time Machine, I'm having no success! My TM backups were done on a network drive via Airport Extreme with a HD attached to it. Through the Snow Leopard disk utility, I can access the partition with the backup on it, but then it hangs on "opening TM backup". After about a half hour, I had to do a hard shut down (no other option). I did this several times, same result. So the question is;
Can I plug the HD directly into my MBPro and restore it that way? I'm not sure if I can do this as I know the backups are different for hard wired and networked drives.
Or can I use an ethernet cable and plug Airport Extreme with the external drive attached into my laptop?
    Thanks for any help!

no. you can do a full system restore from TM using the restore utility on the snow leopard DVD.

snow leopard disk utility?? what exactly are you doing? disk utility is not involved in restoring from TM in any way.

no, this is not how you should do it. connect the AEBS by ethernet. then boot from the snow leopard dvd and use "restore system from backup" from the Utilities menu. it will let you find the backup on the network and do a full system restore from it.

I was getting warnings that my hard drive on my V570 needed to be replaced. I replaced it today and now can't boot. Keep seeing a message about "media test failure check cable." I tried going into BIOS and putting the hard drive at  the top of the boot list but this did not help. Can anyone help? Thanks.

  • Replaced hard drive need ethernet and network controller

    Hello
I replaced the hard drive on my satellite L655.  I installed windows and used my existing key code.  The laptop is telling me I have no ethernet and network controller.  I have tried to find the correct drivers. Since I am starting the computer from scratch do I need to install other drivers as well?  Please help.
    Thanks

I'm so sorry, Heidi. I misread your first message. I thought you had restored the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media.
That's the best thing to do. All the drivers and utilities are properly preinstalled. Windows is preactivated.
If you failed to burn recovery discs, you can obtain them from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here .
For instructions, see the section Restoring from recovery DVDs/media, which begins on p. 71 of the User's Guide.

  • Problems after Replacing the Main Logic Board in E280R

    Hi
I have just replaced the main logic board and FCal Disk Back plane in one of our E280Rs and now we cannot get any out put to a console (or to RSC card). So cannot get to the OK prompt or any diagonistic output. There are no errors according to the system lights although the RSC card is reporting faulty internal disks. Whether the disks or working or not we still should be be getting at least to the OK prompt.
The main logic board has the same part number as the one we replaced and we swapped the old SEEPROM chip to the new main Logic board
    Any Suggestions greatfully received
    Thanks
    Rob

    LowLuster is correct.
If Apple techs are talking about replacing the logic board, the costs of doing so is over half the cost of a newer IMac.
You maybe better off, if it is financially possible for you, to purchase a new or "newer" used or refurbished iMac.

  • CS3 in MAC OSX7 gives licensing stopped working following replacement of logic board and hard drive.

Repair of MacBookPro with OSX7 replaced logic board and hard drive.  CS3 notified that licensing has stopped working.  It worked before the repair -- and I believe that I had a similar problem in the past.  The Live Chat said that they were not compatible -- which doesn't make sense since it worked fine before the repair.  How can I get it going again.  Chat room said I had to buy new product which seems crazy.

  • Logic Board and Hard drive

I have a 20" 1.25GHZ G4 iMac that had a hard drive failure. It could be seen by Disk Warrior, Drive Genius but wouldn't respond to repairs. After taking it out I was able to confirm that it's bad.
I installed a new drive but that can't be seen by install discs(original and 10.5) or DW and DG. I replaced the cable to the logic board and confirmed continuity on the power wire to the drive. (And the DVD drive runs so it has power). I tried jumper settings of "cable Select" and "master". I confirmed off line that the new drive is good. New board battery. Reset PMU.
Does it make any sense that the problem is the logic board? Everything else seems okay - display, DVD drive, etc. What confuses me about the logic board is that it worked enough to see the bad drive. Anything else to check/change?

Depending on the brand of replacement hard disk drive,
and the requirements with whichever one you have to
work in the iMac G4 configuration, the jumper pin setting
may be the issue. There could also be an issue with an
ATA controller on the logicboard; or other hardware...
Given the possibility of issues in this, some users have
opted to stay away from some brands of drives which
had presented a problem if used as replacement drives
in these computers. Some leave a lasting impression.
{One example, is WD drives. They may be fine, but I
    don't prefer to use them in Macs ... from SCSI days!}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Mac Pro 3,1 - did my hard drive die? And what should I replace it with?

    Hi,
I inherited my late husband's 2008 Mac Pro (3,1 model) which had 2 x 500GB hard drives in it and 6GB of RAM. I filled the remaining hard drive bays with 1TB drives (I take a lot of video so needed the extra space). The boot drive was partitioned 50/50 in Boot Camp. I've upgraded the RAM to 10GB and I am currently running Lion.
Today, while doing something as innocuous as scrolling down a web page, the bottom half of my screen went black and the top half began flashing wildly. When it  stopped after several seconds, the mouse would not respond and I could not click on anything. If flashed a bit more, and then I had mouse control back but could not click on anything - web links, applications, finder. After waiting patiently but getting nowhere, I powered the machine down manually, and when I re-started it, it failed to boot. The chime sounded, the apple appeared, and the little revolving wheel, but at the point where the screen would normally go blue then display the desktop, it just went white. The fans spin, but otherwise it's very silent.
I tested with a second display, got the same issue. I tried booting to recovery mode but it went back to the white screen. I could start in target mode, and there were no issues with flickering screen, so I don't think it's the graphics card. Then I tried browsing to the hard drive over the network, but it wasn't showing on the PC network page, nor could I connect to it via the home theater system, which I can normally do as the streaming app launches on start-up. I am assuming this means the drive has failed? It's the original, and we bought the machine when they were new to the market, so is a good 5 years old. It contains not only the boot drive but my documents, photos, websites, selected videos, all of which are backed up on the Time Capsule, and I was in the process of uploading to cloud backup as well (although not very far along, due to data cap and slow international upload speeds). I had no warning it was about to do this, but then I guess sometimes you don't!
Assuming I need to replace the drive, would it be worth replacing it with an OWC Mercury Electra 480GB SSD in an Icy Dock sled? Or would that be overkill for such an old machine? Would getting a standard 7200 WD Caviar HDD or similar give me enough of a speed boost? Obviously I am rather enamoured with the idea of a blazing fast SSD but I'd have to import it (not available locally) so I don't want to shell out all that money unless it's really going to make a massive difference.
Is there anything else I would need to know about using an SSD over a HDD? I assume I would fire it up the normal way - install it, boot from my Snow Leopard install disc (I downloaded Lion from the App Store) format it, clean install SL, then re-update to Lion, then restore my Time Machine backup? Am I likely to experience any weird issues due to it being an SSD? I see talk online of firmware problems and something called TRIM that I don't know anything about. If it's most likely that I can install it and rock on as normal, then I'm pretty keen, but if there's a reasonable probability of it being temperamental, I probably wouldn't be willing to deal with that (and therefore go the HDD route instead). Therefore I am very keen to hear people's opinions and experiences.
Sorry for the terribly long ramble. The more I have researched this, the more questions it raises! All advice gratefully accepted. Thanks!

more than likely it is your video card. If it is ATI 2600XT, tell it bye-bye. The card is barely used at all in TDM or Safe Boot Mode. The 2600 and Lion and the issues with that card, even if it seems okay, is not.
Depending on Windows OS as to how it mounts and sees your Lion HFSX (there is a nice HFSX driver from Paragon, and an NTFS driver for Lion too)
480GB SSD is overkill for any system unless you are pushing CS6 2-3GB images and then for scratch. All you need for a boot drive is about 100GB.
If you have an SSD now, then 1) you need to do a full image backup and restore (regularly as maintenance), and 2) TRIM Enabler
Save Lion and you can always do a clean Lion install w/o going back to SL - but you might want to keep SL (dual boot) and handy if you run into anything you still need that required PowerPC/Rosetta
FBDIMM RAM dies, Amazon has $32 kits of 4GB. And having all 8 DIMM slots filled improves things. If you need or want to and feel 16GB isn't overkill.
SSD and issues are always possible. you should not just go along. not without a clone image. And you should have another drive w/ TRIM Enabler so that you can do a repair and "trim" what is needed.
Clone a system with CCC regularly. Bootable. And can also be used by Setup Assistant.
Install Lion over a heavily used SL system and there are likely remnants of old things that get in the way and left in there and not removed.

Sounds just like what was happening with my Alum MB. I took it in and they replaced my battery. It seems to be ok now. I don't know what it is, but my battery was fine before 10.5.6 and the same timeframe of the firmware updates when they came out.
My battery health was jumping around but was fine before all of this happened. Unfortunately at 381 cycles I don't think you have much chance of getting the battery for free. Perhaps you can complain about the battery saying it was fine until 10.5.6 or whatever. Not sure when your computer was made, but perhaps you are eligible for this program: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

  • Replaced hard drive and iTunes does not recognize my laptop

My 2011 MacBook Pro froze up and when I rebooted the folder error came up.  Replaced hard drive with a SSD drive and my new OS has a new name.  When I logged into ITunes I had to delete an account due to my limit being reached.  My old Mac ID was showing and it was signed up for the cloud at a fee of $24.00.  The same MacBook but with a new hard drive had a new ID and I can not restore any of my pics or ITunes music.  Am I missing a step or can I rename my Mac so it will match my old ID?  If I rename it can I download my old info off of ITunes?? Thanks

I'm not following much of the question and for me it would help to get some terms straight. You only "log into" the iTunes Store (online).  What account was this and what limit??
Old Mac ID?  Your AppleID is what you use to log into the store. It does not change with computers.  You always use the same one, perhaps updating the email address from time to time.
By the cloud do you mean iTunes Match?
Sure, your computer hard drive has a new name (you can rename it -- my series of drives have kept the same name for 23 years now).  That doesn't affect logging into the Store. Start up iTunes, log into the Store using your same Apple ID, download available past purchases, and if you have the Match service download your other music too.   You may have to authorize the computer again.  I don't know which part of the computer is used for authentication and if that got lost with the old drive.

  • Having logic board and inverter replaced - will post results.

My MBP is afflicted with the CPU whine and the LCD whine, not to mention the "Moo". I solved the Airport not connecting automatically issue on my own.
Talked to Apple about the whines, they wanted me to take it to the local guys, which I was happy to do. I dropped it off this morning, going to pick it up after work.
They are ordering me a replacement logic board, and the inverter (at my request). I will keep my MBP until they come in and then they will swap the new parts in.
I'm guessing it won't be a short wait for the parts, but I will follow up in this thread detailing further results and noise levels.
Personally, I am very impressed with the local service response. They agreed to get the inverter at my request even after opening it up and finding the noise to all eb coming from the logic board.
I know it ***** to wait... but there is more to come. Any questions about my specific machine, etc; post and I will answer.

BrenM - Good luck with your MBP! I hope the replacement logic board and inverter resolve the issues.
As for me, my MBP has been at an Apple Authorized Service Provider in Oakville, Ontario for about a week and a half. They first ordered a replacement logic board, which came from California ... took 2 or 3 days. Unfortunately the replacement logic board did not resolve the high-pitched "whine" issue. The tech told me it is quieter, but not gone .... So on Monday he advised me that they are replacing the inverter, which is on order. They expect to receive it on Wednesday. To be honest, I don't think the inverter will address the high-pitched "whine", as I've been following this issue on here very closely. But it probably will resolve the buzz from the screen when adjusting the brightness, so that's good.
The ASP that I took my MBP to in Oakville has been great. They're really on the ball with it and I know they are doing the best they can. But what it really comes down to is ... if Apple doesn't have an issue to this high-pitched "whine", there's not much the ASP can do. I appreciate them replacing the logic board and inverter, but it's really Apple that needs to get their act in gear and resolve this once and for all. The MBP's have been out for what ... 5-6 weeks now? This has been a hot topic ever since people starting receiving their MBP's, and Apple needs to face the fact that people are not going to let this go until a solution is provided.
The ASP told me that if after replacing the inverter it is still not resolved, I'll need to put up with it until Apple resolves the issue, as there's nothing else they can do. I asked him - what if it takes Apple 2-3 months to resolve the issue? He said I can bring it right back in to have it fixed. So that's good.
The other thing I was considering is when I get my MBP back, to contact Customer Relations and put up a fuss to receive a replacement. But ... then the replacement will probably have the high-pitched "whine". I don't know what to do at this point. It sort of bothers me that my $3000 MBP is no longer pristine, as it has been serviced and received replacement parts ... what do you guys think? Should i be firm with customer relations and (politely) demand a repacement?

    Thanks for your response.
I had tried COMMAND+ALT+R which led me to directly to INTERNET RECOVERY via wifi. After 1 hour or so it dropped me at the same point.
I've tried MIGRANT ASSISTANCE as well, it kept on LOOKING FOR OTHER COMPUTERS even though I clicked on TIME MACHINE BACK UP USING EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE
    so what to do now?
P.S. Guys at MacStore were so careless to even listen to me when I asked them about retrieving back up :(

That would depend on whether your model actually has a hard drive. If you have the new 2013 Retina model, then you have a fixed storage device built-in that cannot be modified after purchase.
