Replacing HDD in Pismo

Good afternoon--
Sort of a strange question, but here it goes--my MacBook Pro went "swimming" in a cup of water and did not recover Apple wants $1500 to repair it, which is almost what a new one ofthe same vintage is worth. So... I had the thought to put the HDD that is in the MacBook Pro (Seagate Momentus 100GB 7200RPM) into my Powerbook Pismo, since my Pismo is very functional and in need of a new, larger, quieter hard drive. The dimensions of the drives are the same, but the connections to the ribbon cable are vastly different. Is there a way I can get just a ribbon cable to connect the drive to my Pismo, or an adapter of sorts, or am I out of luck? I have been searching for some ideas, but am coming up empty. I know I can get an enclosure and go that route, but a new internal drive for my Pismo would be much more convienient.
Any thoughts?
Thanks--

Thanks for the reply--that is a bummer. I ordered an enclosure, so I guess I will go that route
Thanks again--
Sean

  • Flex 2 14 Warranty when replacing HDD

    Hi!
I am thinking of buying the Flex 2 14. The version I'm thinking ships with 1TB HDD which I'd like to replace with a 500GB SSD. The only problem I'm having is that, as far as I know, replacing HDD in Flex 2 requires opening the whole laptop, which in turn means breaking the warranty sticker. Does this really void the warranty? Who should I contact? I haven't found any local stores which could do replacing for me without breaking the sticker.
Ps. I live in Finland if that helps.

Hi Oren,  I also have had this problem, and this IS a design error which makes only the lower half of the key usable. Another thing is that I come from a Keyboard with the square keys, and I am used to hitting the key anywhere will produce a letter on the screen. The Lenovo Flex 2 14 is using chiclets /island based keys and by design very different. As a result I had to practice with this new keyboard, and after a few days (3-5) I wasn't making as much typing mistakes as when I first bought it. And now I barely miss a letter. (Also I challenged myself to "Typing of the Dead" game which helped enormously ) I would not say that this keyboard is unsuable, but rather something that you have to be determined to use. Because all in all the Lenovo Flex 2 14 is a pretty cool computer with most of the stuff anyone would need and a good price too.  FLEX 3 Coming soon!

  • DV6-7202se Replacement HDD

Hi, I want to buy a replacement HDD for my DV6-7202se. Originally, I have a 1TB SATA HDD operating at 5400 rpm. I'm running Windows 8.1.
My laptop is now out of its original 1 year warranty.
    1) Is it possible for me to go for a higher capacity, faster HDD?
    2) My laptop was purchased in the UAE. Where can I find the replacement HDD here?
    3) Does my current HDD have a specific product number? The official HP website can't seem to give me that and keeps throwing 'no information found' messages.
    4) Where will I get recovery discs for reinstalling the OS on it? It originally came with Windows 8, I upgraded it to 8.1.
    Thanks!

I had downloaded it back when you had first given the link. Though it looks like it still works. How is one supposed to reinstall Windows if they're swapping HDDs if Microsoft doesn't provide OEM versions of the OS? I wish these laptops were available with legacy installations instead of this UEFI rubbish.
My laptop was not delivered with Windows 8.1. I had just upgraded it from 8.0 when 8.1 came out. I actually delayed upgrading all these days but over the last couple of weeks, the OS has terribly slowed down (during boot) and a crashes too frequently (during file transfers).
I tried refreshing the PC but it says my drive is locked. It also doesn't seem to unlock using the command line Master Boot Record repair method. To be honest, Windows 8 + UEFI feels like it's worse than cancer. Things worked nicely during the first year but as soon as the warranty expired (it's been one and a half months since I bought the laptop), I could feel things falling apart, even though I use the laptop for basic office work.
I tried contacting local HP support here in the UAE, and they seem more aloof to technical queries as Honey Boo Boo to rocket science. I'd have expected my HDD to last longer than one and a half years (other than visible lagging and slow boot, it also failed the DST Short Test), so I find myself never recommended another HP product either for home or for business use in this region purely based on terrible local support for spares and maintainence. The only place where I found real help was here in the forums, where you replied with exact answers.

  • Replace HDD problem

I have Mac Book, Model Identifier: MacBook7,1. Recently bad sectors developed on 120G Toshiba HDD. I get new Samsung 320G HDD, tried to replace it... but problems started:
I tried to clone the disk, but because of bad sectors, it was unsuccessful.
I decide to do new MacOS installation. After booting (with OPTION key), and choosing to boot from CD (and USB), in both cases I get "screen of death".
My friend have one generation older Mac Book (6.1), and yesterday he has replaced his HDD with SSD disk (about this later). We put the disk into his MacBook, and install MacOS successfully.
Also, we've tried to use his old (original) MacBook HDD (with already installed MacOS), but it wouldn't start. We've also tried to start new installation, but always we get "screen of death".
We realize that there is some kind of protection (I am not sure, but I think it is EFI... or something like that).
He had replaced HDD successfully, because a long time ago, he done something in order to reinstall his MacOS.
Any hint how to rid off the protection?

    Screen of death:
    Obviously you haven't read carefully.
There are 2 MacBooks. On the first one I can not boot from DVD nor bootable USB... I have option to boot from DVD/USB, but after few seconds I get "the message to restart the computer". I do not have that problem on the another computers... So, please spare me of this kind of advices.

  • Replace HDD w/ Win 8 with new HDD w/Win 7

Just bought a HP Pavilion 17-e067cl Notebook PC from COSTCO. I want to remove the factory installed HDD with Win 8 and the factory load on it and replace it with a new HDD and load Win 7 on it
Is there anything in the BIOS that would prevent me from doing this? If so, can the settings be modded to accomplish my plan?
I intend to use an identical bare drive and load Win 7 on it.
Will a new, retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit Full System Builder License and Media, GFC 020250 (1 machine, 1 license) be the correct version of the OS install. I want Home Prem.
My intention is to keep the original HDD with Win 8 in case warranty issues arise in the future or will the motherboard marriage be a problem?
    details for the laptop:
    prod #: F9L64UA#ABA
    HDD:     ST750LM0 22 HN-M750MBB SATA (Samsung)

    Memory:  8GB SODIMM Samsung 1600MHz
CPU:  AMD A8-5550M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics
disclaimer: my last cert was on Win XP, so I am way behind the curve on Win 8.

    ****Disclaimer*****
HP doesn't recommend the installation of Windows 7 on a computer shipped with Windows 8, nor will it support the installation of Windows 7. HP will not provide Windows 7 drivers and suitable drivers may not be available for the hardware in the computer. Also, Windows 7 may not support some of the hardware or software features designed for the computer.
Make sure you create your HP Recovery Discs or USB Flash Recovery media before modifying or changing ANYTHING... even if you are going to swap in a new HDD.
    You will need to DISABLE "Secure Boot" and maybe ENABLE "Legacy Support" in the "BIOS Secure Boot cofiguration" on the settings page shown below, before you can attempt to install Windows 7;
    or
Some of the information below will vary depending on the HDD being partitioned as MBR or GPT, and/or booting the Windows 7 installation media as Legacy or UEFI.
Additionally, as the hard drive may be partitioned as GPT, you may have to boot the computer using the "UEFI - CD/DVD drive" or "UEFI - USB Flash drive" options in the "F9" boot menu. If "UEFI - CD/DVD drive",  "UEFI - USB Flash drive" or something to that effect doesn't exist in the boot menu, please post a screen shot and/or descibe the listed boot options.
I suggest using Windows 7 SP1 for the best intallation experience. If you need Windows SP1, please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" to download and create your own Windows 7 SP1 disc. If the DVD refuses to boot as UEFI, you may need to use a USB Flash drive (may require DISABLING "Fast Boot" in the BIOS) as the installation media. Please download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool to create a Windows 7 SP1 USB Flash drive. Please note that some computers may not recognize a valid UEFI enabled USB Flash drive if it is formated as NTFS and may require a FAT32 formatted USB Flash drive. You should be able to make a FAT32 formatted Windows 7 installation USB Flash drive using Rufus, UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer, or WiNToBootic. I like Rufus, as it has options for "GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer" and "FAT32".
Most of the Windows 7 drivers from the HP Pavilion g7z-2100 CTO Notebook PC Drivers page should work on your computer, however you may need to source some drivers directly from the chipset manufacturers's support sites.
    Please post the Windows Device Manager's "Hardware Ids" for any additional missing or unknown devices as shown in the example below;

  • Kernel panics/crashes persistent, replaced HDD, RAM, Logic board

I have a 2010 white unibody macbook that for the first couple years of it's life gave me no issues whatsoever. Recently, I upgraded from snow leopard to mountain lion and replaced my stock apple 2G RAM for two 4G sticks I bought brand new. Everything ran great for a month or two, the memory was recognized right away, and worked fine (activity monitor displayed everything no issue whatsoever) even running a bootcamp partition, and doing lots of more memory heavy stuff like video editing.
Then I started getting weird issues, like safari or chrome randomly chrashing over and over again, or other apps refusing to even open. Then I started getting windows style glitches where the screen would lag in updating and bits of different app windows would migrate across the screen. Then I got several kernel panics in a row, at which point I figured it was time for action.
I booted from a USB OSX 10.8 install disk I made a while back and ran disk utility to try and repair the disk. Disk utility told me it was fine. I backed up and erased the disk, and tried to re-install.. but the primary process would fail some 4 minutes into the progress bar with no error report.
I gave up and went to the genius bar, where they ran some tests (which turned up nothing on the HDD) and had the same install failure. They figured there was something wrong with the HDD writing system or something, and replaced it with a brand new 500G. The install still failed. They sent it to the offsite repair facility, where they took out my aftermarket RAM and put a pair of brand new 1Gs in. They also replaced my logic board. The install worked, and I got a fresh copy of mountain lion. Everything worked fine as I booted up and started restoring things from my backup drive, other than the tiny 2G memory was pretty much full with the computer just sitting there with say, safari and mail open. So, I cracked it open and put my old-new 8G's of ram in. Worked fine all day yesterday and today. Then about an hour ago i got the same weird crashes and glitches, and then finally it just froze and I had to do a cold power-button shut down. I put the apple approved brand-spankin new RAM back in, but it won't even start up normally. I get the grey apple screen and a progress bar, and then it powers off. I started in recovery mode, which seems to work fine. I ran disk utility and tried to repair the disk, the process failed like a minute in and the error said that it couldn't be repaired and suggested I wipe the disk.
I'm really not sure what else could be wrong if theres a brand new motherboard, OS, HDD and RAM. HELP.

  • 24" IMAC 09 - Replacing HDD -  Size, Hybrid, speed?

HDD went down, got it back but it's not right.  Am replacing, would like to get Hybrid, but seems they are all 2.5", use adapter, probably not, Recommendations for HDD, 1 tb, 7,200 RPM, 6GBS?  Just inquiring what people are using, and am especially interested in the hybrid (HDD/SSD) option, If so will probably have to wait till they move off the 2.5 and on the 3.5 perhaps.  Awaiting response.
    SDB

Should work fine, good luck with the upgrade!

  • Help needed to find a replacement HDD for Dell Studio 1558

    Hi,
My laptop HDD is 5 yr old and started to give a lot of read/write errors recently, I'm also finding very difficult to back the data from my laptop to my Seagate external HDD.When I copy the files to external HDD it gives I/O error. When multiple files are copied the fan runs at high speed makes lot of noise and the laptop.shuts down due to overheating. Due to this I got a chkdsk to scan and fix the errors on my external drive due to data copy failure taking additional 4hrs to scan for errors. My laptop.internal drive is Seagate momentus ST9500325AS 5400 rpm 500 GB,2.5" internal 8 MB cache SATA 3.0 GB/s drive and find that the drive is unavailable in my country.
I've just seen Seagate momentus Thin ST500LT012 500 GB 5400 RPM 16 MB Cache SATA 3.0 GB/s 2.5" internal Laptop/Notebook Hard disk on Amazon and would like to.know if I can replace my old with this
I was not sure to order this online since it reads thin I doubt if it would be slimmer than the old one and might not be an alternative.
I would also greatly appreciate if someone could suggest an alternative HDD preferably Seagate to replace for Dell 1558 studio
    Thanks in advance.

First try to make a Dell Backup and Recovery 16 GB Bootable USB using the latest version of Dell Backup and Recovery:
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/dell-backup-and-recovery-1-8-1-71/
The instructions are for Windows 8.1 but should be similar for Windows 7.
New drives will be slimmer. I recommend you replace the HDD with a SSD if you want a significant performance boost. Crucial SSDs include a spacer for seating into your system and guarantee compatibility:

  • Replacing HDD in Mac Mini

Nevermind I answered my own question.

Very interesting, thanks el Duque. Too bad MCE doesn't make a carrier for the Mac Mini. I wonder if one for a Macbook Pro can be easily modified to fit?
I have just learned that the SATA connector on the logic board for the optical drive in Macbooks and the Mini is called a "Slim-SATA" connector. Instead of the power side of the connector having 15 pins, it only has 6, with both types of connectors having a standard 7-pin data side. Both power and data hook-ups are achieved in a single connector -- a power side and data side.
Since the ports on 2.5" hard drives are "standard" SATA connectors, AND they don't match up to the logic board's connector location (like with the connector location on the optical drive), a cable is needed to run between the HDD and the logic board connector.
Unfortunately, such a cable is not available -- yet. Instead, one has to be fabricated out of two types of SATA cables -- a Molex 4-pin to SATA 15-pin power cable and a combination cable that looks like this:
    http://www.byteccusa.com/product/SATA/SATA-XP118/SATA-XP118.htm
The fabrication involves replacing the molex 4-pin power end of the combi-cable with the SATA power end of the molex 4-pin to SATA power cable (cutting and soldering). The BIG question now is whether a HDD will work with just the two-wire power cable (of the combi-Sata cable) that an optical drive normally uses? Anyone know if it will? Thanks.

    Dear chong2010,
what you are experiencing is not unheard of, part of the counterfeit protection on the MS OS involves taking note of certain aspects of the Hardware, including the hard drive, so changing the drive is VERY likely to trigger this reaction on part of
    the OS.
All you need to do is to perform the validation process again, as you did when you initially installed the box (or initially used the box, if pre installed by manufacturer), using the same original windows key (you should have it in a label attached to the
box of the computer of in the supporting documentation of the purchase).
You can do this from "control panel" -> 'system security" -> "system" or by typing "
    cscript slmgr.vbs /ato
in the command line (admin privs required in this command line)
    Best Regards / Saludos, Marianok

  • Replaced HDD, now MacBook Pro won't power on.

Just bought a new HDD, Seagate Momentus 750Gb (link below). Installed it in my MacBook Pro, replacing the old 160Gb drive (also a Seagate Momentus, older version though) and when I tried to boot my laptop back up it won't even power on. I don't hear anything starting up, and the status light on the front doesn't turn on either. Putting the old drive back in and booting up it works perfectly fine, just like it did before swapping drives. The drive is supposed to be compatible with my laptop (MacBook Pro 3,1 Late 2007 15"). The drive is not partitioned or formatted, but this should not affect the laptop from powering up. I have no other computer to try the drive in to see if it is DOA but even if it were it again should not affect the laptop from powering up. Any advice on what could be causing the problem or something that I may have overlooked would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Chris

    Hi c,
Your options, as I see them:
    1. Contact Seagate tech/warranty support and see what they have to say.
    2. Get an external enclosure to try the HD in.
    3. Find another MBP to try the HD in.

  • Replacing HDD on MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011)

I took my laptop in to the Apple Store and found out I needed to have both the battery and the hard drive replaced. I had them fix the battery but I figured I'd do the hard drive myself since I have heard it's not complicated. I have not done this before, but the instructions do seem fairly straightforward.
I just can't figure out which HDD to buy. So that's my question.
I have read about the differences between an HDD and an SSD and I don't think I need the SSD; that seems like more than I need for what I use the laptop for.
I'd prefer to spend less than $100, and if I could speed things up from what I currently have with that amount that'd be great too.
    Thanks for any help.

Your computer will rip w/ a SSD.
I only deal with OWC and there are many reasons that I do
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Mercury_6G/
Never had a problem w/ anything I've ever bought from them in at least 8 years or so. They are Mac specialists so everything they sell works without any hassle.
I on an early 2011 MBP 13" right now.
I put a 120 GB SSD from OWC in it and bumped the RAM to 8 GB. I'm running Mavericks 10.9.5. I've been avoiding Yosemite w/ all the issues we see around here.
Photoshop CS 6 opens in 3.4 seconds. I typically have 5 desktops open, 3 browsers, Photoshop and Word and probably an average of 12 windows open at one time. Never see the spinning ball. I went w/ the smaller SSD for budget reasons. If I needed a lot of storage I'd run a conventional hard drive as a disk doubler (Check OWC site for that.) or an external.
    That SSD is currently $74.99

  • Replacing HDD, can't format

    I'm replacing the broken HDD in my 2006 white MB with a WD1600BUDT ( http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=5383&p_created=&p_pv=2.327&pprods=227%2C327 )
and it was giving me a I/O error when I tried to format it with my 10.4 grey disk. It also showed up as being a 1.2 TB drive instead of the 160GB that it should be.
So I popped in my iMac's 10.5 grey disc to see if disk utility would allow me to format the drive there. It shows up properly as a 160GB drive there, and allows me to format it. However once I go back to the 10.4 disk to try and install the OS, the formatted partition I created wont mount.
I remember reading on WD's website that the AV drives were compatible with 10.4 and up, so I'm really hoping that I don't have to buy yet another hard drive.
    Any suggestions?

Thought I would type up the solution I found in case anyone else stumbles across this page on google while looking for help.
There's no way to make this HDD work with 10.4, however 10.4.11 will work. So what I had to do was take an old hard drive I had (that had a bootable version of OSX) and plug it up with an external usb case, then boot from it and partition a small part of the drive (15 GB) and install the grey 10.4 disk onto that partition.
Once 10.4.11 was installed on the partition, I ran disk utilities from there and formatted the internal drive successfully!
Then I booted back to the main partition on the usb-connected hard drive, and used a free program called Carbon Copy Cloner to copy everything from the 15GB partition to the internal drive. Ah sweet success. Now if only it hadn't taken me all night to figure that out! lol

  • Do user-created recovery disks work with replacement HDD of different capacity?

The original Seagate 250GB SATA HDD in my Pavilion G60-214EM notebook has completely failed (BIOS and other Windows machines cannot even see it). I replaced it with a Samsung 160GB SATA HDD but Recovery Manager on my user-created (DVD-R) recovery disk consistently fails at 2% of "Reformatting  the Windows partition of your hard disk drive". If I look at the resulting partitions from another machine I see a 10.61 GB NTFS 'RECOVERY' partition, an empty active primary NTFS partition of 37.12 GB and 101.31 GB still unallocated.
Should the user-created recovery disks work if the replacement disk drive is smaller capacity than the original?
Should they work with a larger capacity replacement drive?
If not, can HP provide recovery disks that will work with a different capacity HDD?
    Thanks,
    --A

Hi, I am the same predicament as you are From my experience thus far, the replacement disk drive space needs to be bigger or equal to the original HD space. (e.g.. I had a 640 gb OEM HD, I cannot install or factory reset the new 500 gb WD HD because it says its too small...)
As for question 2, I am going to try to get a 1TB hard drive, though I don't know due to the prices and such. Will post back if I do.
Question 3: I do not know, someone else may be more knowledgeable:/
    Hope this helps!

  • Replacing HDD with SSD, is it possible. T400

If it can be replaced, is it worth it??

the T400 supports SATA2 mode. Unless you need constant high speed hdd access, then you should get the SSD, otherwise, i will just invest in a high quality 7200 rpm SATA drive.
If you are planning to get the SSD you should get the latest generation one, also you would need a 1.8 inch to 2.5 inch hdd mount adapter, otherwise the ssd won't fit in the T400 hdd slot.
