Replacing HDD on macbook, don't have original disk.

I just bought a late 2008 macbook, aluminum unibody.  But, it didnt come with the original disk.  I believe it is currenly running oxs 10.9.1.  I have a retail copy of snow leopard.  but i believe it originally had leopard on it.  From everything I have read online about replacing hard drives it seems really confusing.  Im fine with physically putting the new drive in, but i dont understand what i need to do to get an operating system back on the computer.  since i just bought it, i dont have any files that I am worried about transferring over.  I eventually want mavericks back on it, i know that is meets the system requirements, i just dont know what disk i need.  Will the retail snow leopard work? or do i need the original disk that came with the computer? I have read that if I do need that disk I can probably just either order one from apple or take it to an apple store and they can either do it for me, or give me the disk.  does anyone know about how much that will cost?
any help is REALLY appreciated.  everything I read seems to have a different explanation of what i need to do.
thanks,
amanda

Retail version of Snow Leopard works fine on your MacBook.
Update till 10.6.8, then download Mavericks for free from Mac App Store to install.

Call Applecare and ask them to send you a replacement set. The will charge you a nominal fee for shipping and handling.

Since the MacBook Pro currently works, you should put it next to the iMac and compare the network settings for AirPort in System Preferences Network pane Advanced. Also, if you want to start off with the default network settings, you can use Location drop down menu and select +Edit Locations+. Then click the plus sign to create a new location. Set up that new location.
On System Preferences Network pane, AirPort should appear at the top of the list (in the sidebar). To change the service order, click on the gear icon and select +Set Service Order+.
Some additional tests you can try, on top of seeing if it works with (1) WEP security disabled and (2) a direct wired connection to the router.
If you get it to work with either (1) or (2), be sure to run Software Update at least two times to apply any recent updates from Apple. See if that makes any difference to using AirPort with WEP back on.
    (3) Start up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
I don't know if any third-party software has been installed on the iMac at this point, but Safe Mode will start up with only the essential Apple extensions and processes running. See if it works any better in Safe Mode.
    (4) Create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Try connecting with AirPort in the new account.
    (5) Connect the MacBook Pro to the router with a wired Ethernet connection. Make sure its Internet access works. On System Preferences Sharing pane, set it up for +Internet Sharing+ so that it is set to +Share your connection from Ethernet - To computers using AirPort+. On the iMac, try to connect to that wireless network and access the Internet.
That last one (5) may be a good one to try first. It would at least show that the iMac's AirPort is working - you can even set it up to use WEP. If you have any questions about using the +Internal Sharing+ feature, please ask.

  • I just bought a new iMac and now I am trying to use it as a screen for my Macbook pro, but it don't have a Mini DisplayPort the new model only have Thunderbolt which my Macbook don't have. Is there any way to connect this two mac's anyway??

I just bought a new iMac and now I amtrying to use it as a screen for my Macbook pro, but it don’t have a MiniDisplayPort the new model only have Thunderbolt which my Macbook don’t have. Isthere any way to connect this two mac’s anyway??

Screen sharing setup in 10.5, 10.6 are described by the links by operating system.  10.7 is fairly similar to 10.6.
And if both Macs have Firewire, you can setup a Firewire over IP network for fast communication between machines.  Note if you have two different Firewire ports a 6 pin to 9 pin Firewire cable does exist.  There are no Firewire to USB cables.

I just received my replacement phone and I don't have my old sim card, how do I active it?

If it did not come with a SIM card pre-installed, you can get one free at any Verizon corporate store, or call CS and they can mail you one.  800-922-0204.

The iPhoto application should be in your applications folder
If you have removed it and your computer came with restore disks then you will need them to reinstall. Or you can purchase a version on DVD or from the App Store. Apple my be able to reace missing restore disks for a nominal charge

  • HT3910 I don't have my disk's and i want to wipe and then sell my mac

I don't have my disks but i want to sell my macbook pro. Can i erase remove and just plain wipe every thing without them?

If you upgraded the computer's firmware to use Apple's Internet Recovery system, you don't need the disks. Otherwise, phone Apple and order replacements.

  • Apple new macbook pro dosent have a disk drive. Does the older model have a problem with the disc drive and so is removed in the new model?

apple new macbook pro dosent have a disk drive. Does the older model have a problem with the disc drive and so is removed in the new model?

No. Apple replaced the disk drive with a solid state drive (SSD) instead. The SSD is faster the old disk drive.

  • Was going to reinstall Illustrator CS4 but now realize I don't have a disk.

I uninstalled my CS4 version and was going to reinstall it. Then I realized that I must have downloaded the original software from Adobe and I don't have a disk. I have a legal serial number. Where can I download a CS4 copy now? I can't find it available on adobe.com and customer support is only available Monday through Friday. TIA.
    Steve

I phoned Adobe Monday morning and was told that they do not have a copy of the CS4 version to download and that my options were to buy CS5 or find someone with a copy of CS4 that I could borrow. This surprised me -- it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult for Adobe to have a copy available for people who had lost their disk.
So, as I was pondering my situation, I remembered someplace where my original disk might be. I looked and found it, and have now reinstalled my software and everything is looking good (I am such an idiot sometimes).

  • How do I get rid of the Microsoft Setup Assistant loop? I migrated my software/documents from another laptop so don't have the disk to reinstall. Please help! Can't open any Microsoft Office software, like Word, and stuck in a loop?

I migrated my software/documents from another laptop so don't have the disk to reinstall. Please help! Can't open any Microsoft Office software, like Word (for 2008), and stuck in a loop?
Whenever I select Word Microsoft Setup Assistant appears, asks for feedback, then after selecting okay (both on saying yes or no to feedback) goes on to a registration page. When I click on this it says I've already registered so I just click okay, and then move on to a update page. After this, if I click on Word, the process repeats itself.
As I said, I don't have the disk to reinstall, and can't find the Office Settings to delete as many pages have suggested I should try. Safe Boot restarting also hasn't worked... Really stuck and need Word very soon for work.
If you can help, that would be great, and feel free to ask any questions about the situation as I'm not an expert here.
    Cheers,
    Jack

First, export your contact from iCloud.com and save them on your computer in a safe spot some where (like you desktop).  Use this to help you do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3606
Next, on both of your devices, go to Settings > iCloud and turn on contacts and select Merge. Then turn off contacts and select 'Delete form my [device]' when prompted.
Now go back to iCloud.com and select a contact (yes they will all be messed up again) and select Command+A on a Mac or Control+A on a PC to select all of the contacts.  Tap the delete key on your keyboard (or right click /control click a contact and select delete).
You iPhone, iPad and iCloud.com should not be empty for contacts.
Go back to Settings > iCloud on both devices and turn on contacts again (you should not see merge this time).
Next, go back to iCloud.com and import your contacts (those exported .vcards).  You can either drag and drop them into the empty contacts list in your web browser, or you can use the gear icon to import.
You cleaned up contacts should import correctly into iCloud.com and sync to both of your devices.
    Good luck.

I am trying to update to OS X Mavericks but I cant seem to. Everytime I try to install it, I get an error saying I don't have enough disk space or FindReaperFiles closed unexpectedly. What do I do?

That isn't the problem. When I start the download of Mavericks I have more than enough space on the disk drive. However, once it has downloaded and it is attempting to install this error occurs:
Any ideas where I could re-download FindReaperFiles? From what I can see it's an Apple file but I can't find a download on their site at all.
    Thanks!

  • Photoshop Elements 10, says I don't have enough disk space to install when I do

I have tried installing PSE 10 several times and each time it tells me that I don't have enough disk space, but will flash up a drive on the list that does but will not let me select it, HELP ! ! !

Try to make some temporary extra space on C drive, which PSE uses only during the installation process. Once the installation is complete that space should be freed up.
