Replacing internal harddrive - suggestions?

Hi everyone,
Are there any internal hard drives you would suggest me purchasing? I've been reading about Western Digital 160gb 7200RPM ATA & Fujitsu 160gb5400RPM ATA, and just to confirm, are these compatable with the macosx 10.4?
Any tips would be helpful.
Thanks.

I don't see which Mac you have!
A good place to find info on the drive you're thinking about is...

You've already done the two things I would have suggested.
If your Mini has an internal battery then I assume it's a G4. That means you've gotten a lot of good years of service from it, and it's old enough that it's certainly not covered by AppleCare anymore, and it's probably not worth spending money trying to repair it.
You should be able to tear it apart using instructions from ifixit.com to get the hard drive out, and then put the hard drive into a nice USB or FireWire enclosure (I like the ones from Other World Computing, macsales.com) so you can transfer your data to a replacement Mac.
I hope someone has another suggestion for you.

  • My Mac is a 21.5-inch Late 2009 with a 1 TB Seagate HD that must be replaced, according to Apple support, but they denied me that right because the serial is not part of the replacement program: any suggestions to get a plausible solution to this problem?

My Mac is a 21.5-inch Late 2009 with a 1 TB Seagate HD that must be replaced, according to Apple support Panama, but they denied me that right because the serial is not part of the replacement program: any suggestions to get a plausible solution to this problem?
I would want to know what are the criteria used by the people al espresslane support to deny the opportunity presented by the replacement program, given the situation that these 1 TB Seagate HD´s have had problems and certainly not only in the batch they accepted, but probable in other batches too.
The second question is about the powerpc support that is lost when updating from Snow Leopard to Lion X: I can not read my medical application UPTODATE.
I hope that there wil be some kind of support to help me solve that problem, this is my first petition actually.
Now, I do not have access to my yahoo email, intermitent access to Apple home page, unpredictable access to Apple store and no access to iCloud in my iMac: when I try to access these web sites, the blue web address bar is interrupted and never goes to the end, no filling up the whole bar.
I do not know what is the first problem, the Seagate HD or the Lion X, but my life is becoming a miserable one, not having the opportunity to enter in the raplacement program, losing the powerpc support because of the updating to Lion X, the necessity to buy Lion X again because it used to appear as a paid program, but not anymore, and finally having no access to my yahoo email, Apple home website and Apple store and no access at all to the iCloud: I am done.
    Chao, Elías.

You can have Apple or a competent service shop replace the internal HD for a fee, unless you have AppleCare and the iMac is within its warranty period in which case it will cost nothing. If you must pay the cost will be approximately $350 US.
PowerPC support is gone with Lion. You can install or retain Snow Leopard on another partition, and boot Snow Leopard as necessary.
The inability to load web pages is a different problem, unless it is related to your failing hard disk.

  • Help with opening up a Seagate Barracuda SATA Internal HardDrive on my Macbook Pro!

    Hi Everyone!
I have two questions that I would really love someone to
    help me out with!!
I really need help trying to open three Seagate Barracuda SATA Internal HardDrive that I was given to edit
dailies for a feature film! I tried all three and only one worked - however, didn't opened but wanted me to intialize
it and reformat it so it can be discovered and opened. But all three contain video and audio files within them, so I cannot
    reformat these drives!
And with the other two, apparently they can be opened on a PC but I have to edit my dailies
on Final Cut 7 - and from what I know, Final Cut Pro is not avaiable for PCs!!
If there is anyone that can answer these two question, please respond soon!!
    Thanks!

I suspect those HDDs are NFTS formats.  Paragon may be the answer for you then:
    http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
Regarding Final Cut, I suggest you post that part of your query on the Final Cut forum where you will have  the best chances for an accurate solution.
    Ciao.

  • Westerndigital internal harddrive is not recognised

    Hi there,
I have tried to replace my old hitachi internal harddrive in a mid2010 macbookpro 13inches with a westerndigital internal harddrive designed for osx lion.
Unfortunately, this is not recognised once i insert it in.
Has anybody had this type of problem? How did u sort it out?
Alternatively, what other internal hard disk would u advice?
Wd claims it s apple's fault as they are required to provide the right drivers with the software updates.
Unfortunately, apple does not believe so.
The hardrive is not faulty as i have been using as an external harddrive so far.
Your help would be really appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Luigi

    >> how do I know if the cable i am gonna will not have the same issue
You don't, until it's replaced & solves the problem, although that's a fairly regular problem on these forums. It's more common though, for the drive to be visible in DU, & yet fail to start up properly, or perhaps show as a startup option... & your new drive is no faster than the original, so it's hard to say for sure without replacing one or the other. I'd plump for the drive, if it were me, despite it working externally.

  • I get an input/output error when i try to restore a functioning backup from my external harddrive to my new internal harddrive through disk utility?

my hardrive Had a smart status warning so i made a backup of it on my external harddrive through disk utility. i checked to make sure that the backup was working and i had no problems with it. i then bought a new internal harddrive and swaped it out but when i was in recovery mode to try to restore my new hardrive i kept getting an error message saying restore error, input/output error

The big dilemma with a new Internal drive is separating Drive operation from 'inside the MacBook' operation. If you had an External Enclosure, you could do all the work (including booting up from the new drive) using the External enclosure.
Then if a know-good drive develops problems only when moved inside the MacBook, it is time to try a replacement cable.

  • Looking to replace broken Harddrive in Macbook Pro Retina

    Hi All,
I am loking to replace my harddrive in my 15" Macbook Pro cause of disk failure.
Can anyone tell me if this harddrive: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/4867/crucial_m4_msata_256gb_solid_state_drive_r eview/index.html
will work if i replace the one in the Retina Pro,
Futhermore, could this harddrive work in my 13" Macbook Air (A1466) ?
    - Rasmus

Sorry for the late reply guys, i shiped it in to the local apple-certified repair shop and it came back with a fresh install and with a note that they didn´t find any problems with it. The odd thing is, that now with about a week of ussage the same problems starts to show, i can still boot it up, but it often freezes and locks-up the whole system, the three error-logs i have been abble to get are posted below, hope some of you can see whats wrong from these:

  • Exchanging the internal Harddrive of an iMac 20"

Has anybody ever exchanged the internal Harddrive of an intel based iMac 20"? I would like to replace the internal 250GB by a 500GB. I have heard it would be rather simple with an 24" iMac and more sophisticated with an 20" and 17" iMac.
Can anybody help on that issue? Any tips or experiences?
I do not care about any loss of warranty and I am quite familiar with working with hardware.
    Thx for your help!

    Hello Thomas
    Have a look at this:
    http://www.baconeggs.co.uk/images/dmm/iMacEarly_200620.pdf
Be patient it takes a bit to load, save or print it after you get it open.

  • Attatching internal harddrives to my Mac-using Firewire 800 or Esata

I would like to attach internal harddrives to my mac-book pro so that I can back up work, large files from video / raw pictures, etc. I have heard people doing this with 7200 rpm internal drives. How would I connect them to my Mac?
The solutions such as VANTEC NexStar NST-D200SU Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" USB2.0 seem to have a lot of overheating issues, and the firewire hard drives that are for sale are a bit expensive considering how much data I want to back up.
Any suggestions, or bite the bullet and spend the $$ on the more expensive solutions? Thanks,

You cannot install additional hard drives inside a MBP, so I'm assuming you mean external drives. See the following:
    Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
Unfortunately, I have no idea where you would purchase any of the above in Cambodia.

  • G5 randomly ejecting second internal harddrive 5 mins after startup?

I recently upgraded my G5 from tiger to leapoard to make it compatible with my iphone4. For some reason it has now started ejecting my second internal harddrive containing movies and pictures 5 minuts or so aftr start up. Before that time the drive works perfectly.
The computer is fully updated to 10.5.8.

Do a little at a time and keep your fingers crossed.  You may have to remount and retry several times.  Of course, with it not staying mounted very long, larger files may be problematic.  I would hook up an external drive, copy from the failing drive to the other internal for maximum speed, then copy from the other internal to the external until I got everything off.  Best to get a FireWire external (most useful, but USB is OK) SATA enclosure or drive dock, put a bare drive into it so that when you are done, you can drop the bare drive into the machine in place of the failing drive.
Oh, and one other thing I might try at some point is to shut down, remove and replace the SATA connectors to the failing drive to clean them up and then reboot.  I would not, however, do this until I had gotten the most important files off the failing drive.
Then, once you have done that, you might want to get another couple of bare drives and use something like SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner (sorry, no handy link in my bad-o-tricks) to clone and keep current backups of the internal drives.  A SATA dock (toaster) might be just the thing, rather than a plain enclosure, certainly faster to deal with when you are swapping multiple drives around.  The linked example is a Quad interface that has actually come down in price the past couple of months.

  • Compatible internal Harddrives?

What models fit the iMac G5 (the one that came out RIGHT before isight)?
I want to get a 500GB harddrive, i'm already running out of room on my 250. If there isn't any compatible 500GB internal harddrives, can anyone suggest a good external one (250 - 500GB)?

Just about any SATA drive will work. I have this Western Digital that I installed about a month ago. Best Buy had it on sale for $99 with no rebates, so I jumped at it.
Be careful. There are several drives from Seagate - normally a top brand - that ship with Spread Spectrum Clocking (SSC) enabled which renders the drive useless in a Mac. OWC disables SSC before shipping, but that might not be enough. There is also a problem with firmware that may also cause the drive to not spool up from sleep. Check out this thread for details on the firmware issue.
I say avoid Seagate drives for now - as good as they are. I know Western Digital and Maxtor drives were working fine at last check.
There is also no limit to the size of HD that you install according to OWC. That was when the 500GB drives were the largest available. I would check before getting one of the recently announced 750GB monsters.
    Wow!

  • New internal harddrive not recognised by macbook!

    Hi,
Sorry to make a new thread on the subject but I've looked around the web and whilst finding similar threads I havnt found an answer to help me so any advise would be much appreciated!
I’ve got a macbook A1181 2.16ghz core 2 duo built in 2007. I got the harddrive replaced in early 2010 when it failed (clicking noise etc) at the Apple store where they replaced the original with a Hitachi 160gb 5400 rpm.
Recently this hdd failed too (clicking noise etc). I’ve got a back up on the time machine on an external hdd so getting data back shouldn't be a problem.
Rather than go to the Apple store again (seeing as they stopped giving outhdds early 2011) I thought I’d buy and replace my own hdd. I bought a WD Scorpio Blue 320gb WD3200BPVT after reading many reviews and forums etc.
I followed the instructions on the Apple pdf guide to replacing hdds, booted up the macbook with the snow leopard disk (I don’t have any other system disks) but I can’t install Snow Leopard or even erase/format the hdd as disk utility wont recognise the hdd, only the disk (dvd/optical) drive.
Starting to lose hope as to what to do (aside from forking out a lot of cash on a new macbook), any help or advise would be much appreciated! Just want to get my mac working again
    Thanks in advance

Also, just thought I'd ask again but has anyone successfully replaced the harddrive in a macbook of same age and model and if so, what make and model of harddrive?
I did one on a 2009 Macbook; OWC (macsales.com) has excellent how-to videos on their site; they also carry hard drives, RAM, etc. and speak Mac. I believe they ship internationally - you can check on that.
Here is the link to the how to:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
(scroll down; yours should be the white/black Macbook?)
Here is the link to their notebook hard drive page:

I had to replace my harddrive on my IMAC and downloads from ITUNES do not show up. How do I restore my previous library?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy, not good, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Looking for replacement internal hard drives for a MacPro

Looking to replace internal hard drives in a MacPro.  Was thinking about 3TB.  Any recommendations?

Look in System Report for the link speed available. (Mine says 3 Gigabit.) Get drives with at least that speed; going beyond that won't get you any more performance.

  • My Mac G5 crashed 2 years ago, and I am trying for format a 3 TB internal harddrive.

    Hi There,
I am trying to format a 3 TB internal harddrive, so that I can reinstal Final Cut Pro 4 on to this new drive, in order to continue editting video. My last hard drive crashed and I was unable to pull anything off of it, so I am starting from scratch. I did have two hard drives, one died and the other one is where all my applications were stored. The 2nd drive is still good, but I running out of space for my video files, hence the reason for this newest drive.
I am working off of a Mac Pro G5 and I believe I was running the OS X 10.4 software. I have the start up disk to install it on my new drive. However, when I try to format the drive, my computer stops working and my mouse pointer begins to spin a rainbow ball and then I end up having to quit disk utility. I am half afraid, I will eventually make the new drive non-operational. So I need a little help.
My questions are these as follows:
When I try to format the 3 TB hard drive, should I consider partitioning it?   What is the up scale to partitioning a hard drive? What is the downfall of that option?
Also, I am able to verify the disk, however the disk shows up as untitled and it only shows up as 746.4 GB, where as I thought it should show up as 2.7 TB. Am I doing something wrong?
I would greatly appreciate some help in this.
    Thanks.
    TallG

So I was able to format the 3TB hard drive, but it only formated it as 736GB
Oh, only 10.4.11 & up can see the new Adavanced Format Drives properlly, they now have 4096 Byte Sectors instead of the old 512 Byte sectors, so that explains the shortage there.
The Highest you can go is 10.5.8
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor

        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.
