Replacing Iphoto with Lightroom?

Hey guys,
How do I make Lightroom my default program to open my pics when I plug in my camera?
Now, whenver I plug in my Digital camera, iPhoto opens up. I would much prefer if Lightroom did it.
Thanks

Or you can do the same thing in the iPhoto Preferences -> Connecing Camera Opens...

  • How to completely replace iPhoto with Aperture

I would love to use Aperture for all my image-handling, but it seems iPhoto is hard-coded into the OS X workflow. For instance, when right-clicking images on the web, there's the possibility to save to iPhoto. Same thing thing when doing a slideshow in Preview, there's an option to add pictures directly to iPhoto.
Does anyone here know how to completely replace iPhoto with Aperture?
    Thanks

Hi, you seem to be right, although I've never used that myself, it made me go off and test it myself.
However, you can use the 'save image to <my-downloads-folder>' feature, and then import the images into Aperture. Which is what I've been doing anyway. It's a two step process for sure, but it'll work.
I'm very much like you, and trying to swap from iPhoto to Aperture. I have to say that I haven't actually run iPhoto since I got Aperture though.

  • Using IPhoto with Lightroom

I just bought Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 and I can't find any photo's in my IPhoto when I want to try and edit them. How can I get access to them to start editing?
    Joe

You need to use a Photo Editor not Lightroom if you want to work with iPhoto.
LR is not an editor like Photoshop. In fact, like iPhoto it's a Digital Asset Manager - that is a Photo organiser, a replacement for iPhoto in fact. There is no way to use the two together. If you want to use LR to process your iPhoto pics then you need to export them from iPhoto (File -> Export), import them to LR, process them, then export them from LR and then import them to iPhoto.
So, you need to decide now which app you want to use to manage your Photos.

  • Most efficiant way of using iPhoto with lightroom

I am new to mac having moved from pc. I really like the interface and publish features of iphoto. I'm quite a serious photography so I want to use lightroom for the more professional features but continue with iPhoto for the family to browse my personal and better work through the simpler iphoto interface.
2 questions really. I want lightroom to access all my photos so will I be importing photos to folders in pictures like I used to do with pc rather than importing them through iPhoto because of the package file.
And what is the best way of putting better work into iPhoto without duplicating a lot of files.
    Hope you can help

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • What is the story with Lightroom

Can anyone tell me about Adobe Lightroom? I am a pe5 user. Is there any reason to buy lightroom and use it with PE5? Can I replace PE5 with lightroom? Andy

    Robert.....
It's difficult for me to give 100% accurate info as I've only used the Beta releases and V1.0 has some new features.
I've been using Lightroom for many months now alongside Elements. I suspect my workflow may change when V1.0 comes along as I believe its Organising abilities have change quite a bit.
Right now though I use it 100% for RAW processing. The Elements downloader still springs into life and dumps the images to my hard drive, but I then open LR and import the images into that. I'm hoping V1 may have improved and have an Elements type downloader but I don't find that a major obstacle. I could just stop the Elements service and import directly into LR.
One of the big issues I can see is that both Elements Organiser and LR keep independent databases so a decision will have to be made to either keep them in sync or work them independently. I'm hoping that I can drop the Elements Organiser in favour of LR but to date Elements Organiser has better capability, at least in my opinion.
Once I've imported the images into LR I review and cull them. (This currently means deleting them in Elements Organiser seperately). The images are keyworded and the keywords are compatible with Elements. I then process the images and Export them as PSDs back to the same folder as the RAW images. Since this is a watched folder Elements picks up the PSDs and the keywords. I then hide the RAW images in Elements.
Key thing to remember is that Elements has no concept of XMP files which is what LR generates.
You can also select an image in LR and then choose to Edit it in Elements. LR exports a TIF to Elements - you make your Edits; close the file and it goes back into LR. V1 has a kind of version/stacks feature. This is similar to selecting an image in Elements Organiser and then launching the Elements Editor.
What doesn't appear to work currently - and I'm not pinning any hopes that V1 will work any different - is that you cannot launch LR from Elements. In some way that doesn't make any sense to me anyway.

  • Experiences with replacing iPhoto 08 with iPhoto 06 ?

    Hi there,
I have tried to live with iPhoto '08 for three months but this relationship is not working out. I would like to replace it with iPhoto '06 or move to Lightroom as my primary image library.
My question: Will iPhoto 06 be able to interface with other iLife 08 apps (especially iDVD and iWeb) or must I remove iLife 08 entirely and go back to iLife 06?
    Thanks for your help.

    hidektol:
You can go back as Thomas Wolf once said. (Actually he said you can't go home again). The organizational files, i.e. database files, of V7 is different from V6. All you can do is create a new iPhoto 6 library and import the Originals folder from the current library. iPhoto 6 should be able to interface with the newer iApps.
What problems have you been having with V7 and have you sought help for them here in the forum before?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. • Need help with iPhoto Aperture Lightroom migration

Would really appreciate some advice on this last stage of the move from iPhoto to Lightroom, as Im sure getting my files into the right place is crucial.
Here is where I'm at right now:
I had an old iphoto (v8.3 or something) library with about 30,000 images on a macbook pro (late 2008) which I moved over to my newer iMac, to merge with an existing library of about 8,000 photos which I was managing with Aperture.
Per some advice I got on how to consolidate iPhoto libraries, I opened the old iPhoto library on my newer iMac running the latest iPhoto version, and then I honestly can't remember exactly what I did after that... but I got both libraries into one, and now I have all my photos merged and sorted into folders and projects, and all looks great. Except for one thing: its still showing up as an iphoto library in finder. There is no Aperture library file or folder anywhere. I guess I needed to "import" at some point, rather than simply opening the library?
My original plan was to get everything into an Aperture library before moving to Lightroom. Maybe it doesn't matter. My main concern before I make the move to Lightroom is keeping my newly organized folder hierarchy (with all projects and albums in tact). And I understand I need to change from managed to referenced library for this. So is it just as simple as "relocating the originals"?

Sorry, maybe I can rephrase my question:
My photos are already sorted into this structure, in Aperture, as a managed library:
    PHOTOGRAPHY (main folder)
    - PROCESSED
            GROUP A
            GROUP B
            GROUP C
            PROJECTS
                 PROJECT 1
                 PROJECT 2
                 PROJECT 3
    - WORK IN PROGRESS
            GROUP D
            GROUP E
            GROUP F
How can I make this into a referenced library?
I understand I need to select all my photos and then choose the "relocate originals" option.
    What comes next?

  • I'm new to Lightroom.  Struggling with downloading from iPhoto to Lightroom.  Pls help??

I have installed Lightroom@ on my mac.  Trying to import photos which are saved in iPhoto.  Have found your link which says I need to create a master copy and copy to my desktop, which I'm in the process of doing, but: (1) it says it will take 11 hours!  (2) do I have to do this every time I want to access recently added photos to iPhoto??  Basically, I'm trying to find the quickest and most efficient way to transfer my photos from iPhoto to lightroom.  Pls advise.  Thanks. Heidi

No, you do this one time only
By the way, if you're going to use Lightroom, you wouldn't add new photos to iPhoto, you import them into Lightroom.

  • Problem with Lightroom 5: how to connect the app with my original pictures which are on a external hard disk and, once this resolved,  how to create virtual pictures

A friend has  installed Lightroom 5  on my MacBook air. he  transferred all my picture that were on my IPhone an on Iphoto on Lightroom but without making virtual copies systematically. He put the original (real?) pictures on a external hard disk under Data_photos folder to allow more memory space on my Mac book Air. My problem now that when I connect the external hard disk with my computer the connexion does not happen automatically. it is like if Lightromm does not recognize the path to get connected to the original/real picture and therefore I cannot see pictures with all their potential and I cannot work on these. I am stuck! What should I do to 1) create this link? 2) create then virtual copies in order to be able to work on my computer without been obliged to connect my external hard disk to be able to use the application Lightroom. The friend who helped me disappeared! He is not in Japan and unable to help me.I hope you can help me. I have been looking for support to apple stores, photo shops, computer specialists but I have not found the expert capable to help me. I am leaving in Geneva. And believe that I should have some one with me physically to resolve a problem which I believe is not a serious one if one knows lghtroom an dinformatic basics... thank in advance to come back to me asap !!!!

I don't think so.  ATV's photo sharing only pulls from iPhoto or Photostream as far as I know.

  • How to import photos from iPhoto to Lightroom?

Hey Guys, How do I export photos from iPhoto to Lightroom? I deleted them from the SD Card so I cannot import them directly to Lightroom. Im using a mac so its all very confusing for me. Please help me., Hey Guys, How do I export photos from iPhoto to Lightroom? I deleted them from the SD Card so I cannot import them directly to Lightroom. Im using a mac so its all very confusing for me. Please help me.

To simply import the original files is quite a simple process.
Locate the iPhoto Library (default is your Pictures Folder). Right click on it and select "Show Package Contents".
Locate the Masters folder and drag it onto the Lightroom icon or an open Library window. This will invoke the Import command.
Be sure "Include Subfolders" is checked.
Now you can import all the original files.
If your goal is to maintain structure of the Events it gets a little more tedious. Drag the event onto the Lightroom icon or the Library window. Once imported you can group them into a Collection Name that mimics the Event.
    Repeat with other events.
With the impending demise of iPhoto and Aperture, I suspect Apple may be working with Adobe to develop an automated process that will also maintain metadata that was added in those programs. If you can wait a while, it may be worth it.

  • OK to use both iPhoto and Lightroom?

I have a late-model 27” iMac (Lion) with all of my many thousands of photos stored and organized in iPhoto with the help of iPhoto Library Manager. For editing my digital images I have not used iPhoto but rather Photoshop Elements (currently Elements 10) as an external editor. I have investigated use of Aperture for managing and editing my photos, but my research indicates that Lightroom is a better program. Therefore, I prefer to use Lightroom. So here’s what I’m thinking of doing:
    1. Leave all of my existing photos in iPhoto and continue to edit them using Elements as an external editor.
    2. Install Lightroom and designate that all new images imported into my iMac go into Lightroom.
    3. Edit and manage all new images with Lightroom using Elements as an external editor to perform those editing
    functions that Lightroom cannot do.
Is this a workable arrangement? Are you aware of any problems with such a setup? I‘d like to avoid being hit with any big surprises! I would appreciate feedback, especially from anybody who has tried this or a similar method.
    Bob

    Old Toad,
    Thanks for responding.
Please re-read my post. I never said that I intended to use Lightroom to edit photos that are in my iPhoto Library. On the contrary I said that my thought was to continue to use Elements for editing the images in my iPhoto library.
My purpose is to avoid having to move all of my existing photos from iPhoto to Lightroom. I have reviewed some online tutorials on what's required to move photos from iPhoto to Lightroom, and it appears to be a long, involved, and tedious task, particularly if thousands of photos are involved as they are in my case. It's not a job that I would look forward to.

  • How do I migrate photos from iPhoto into Lightroom 5?

Okay. I've got all my photos organised in iPhoto, but I've seen the writing on the wall about Apple discontinuing iPhoto.
So I've taken out a subscription for Creative Cloud 2014 including Photoshop & Lightroom 5.
My question is:- How do I migrate all my photos including organising them into Events / Collections from iPhoto to Lightroom 5?
I've seen a tutorial that recommended downloading a free trial of Photoshop Elements 12 to use that as a sort of 'missing link' between the two apps, but it didn't work in that it didn't keep my photos organised in Events / Collections. I just ended up with a load of esoterically generically named folders which made no sense.
Surely there must be a way, shouldn't there?

Have you tried some of the online articles?

  • Getting started with Lightroom - Basic assistance!

Ok, forgive me - just starting with Lightroom (and anxious to get going!). I have a new book but I have questions on some other basics.
First of all, I have a Canon camera - I shoot my pics in Raw + jpg. After shooting my first raw shots, I have them on my laptop (Win) - they stay here before during the work in process (sort, process, and pick what I want to post on my site). Then I move all of them to a backup drive - which is also backed up on another drive.
Your suggestions - what is my first step? Do I import these into Lightroom (currently on my laptop drive)? Do I want to want to import all my pics (from library/folders on external drive) or just my 'need to work with' on laptop drive? What is the most effective us of the catalogs - do you only have one main catalog, one per 'shoot', etc?
As I start to work with these - will I ultimately save these in .raw since they are in .cr2 format? Is it best to convert all of them?
Once they are imported and I work with them and ultimately move them over to my external drive, will the location have any effect on this - i.e. since they were imported?
Functionality wise, I am ready to start using this - it's the initial stuff regarding my workflow that I am curious about!
Do you find this as a complement or replacement to Adobe PSE? Maybe I am used to 'opening a file' or doing the catalog in Adobe PSE that is throwing me off as I convert to a new process! Although, I didn't really use it for organization, just minor PP.
Thank you much for your response...

I'm sure other people will be able to provide more in-depth answers to some of your questions, as I have little experience of Canon raw file formats or PSE. However, I'd like to offer you a couple of suggestions regarding your workflow.
    1. The FIRST thing you should do after you download the files onto your laptop is to make the backups. Do this here and now, not later. If you don't, you only have one copy of your precious photos. If something goes wrong, you're going to kick yourself if you don't have a backup. Make sure you have your external backup at this stage too, if your laptop drive fails, then your backup is not much good to you if it's on the same drive.
    2. Personally, before I import the photos into LR, I do a quick cull to get rid of what is obviously junk, ie. out of focus/unnecessary shots/etc. RAW files take up a lot of space and the more of them I import into LR, the slower it will be. That isn't to say I ONLY import the ones I am going to work with, rather, I DON'T import the ones I'm NOT actually going to keep and store. I do import photos that I eventually don't work with but I keep some anyway because at some point in the future I may come back to them for whatever reason.
As they say, your mileage may vary and it's worth trying different workflows until you find one that is quick and comfortable for you.
    Kind regards,
    MCV
