Replacing iTunes library with iPod library?

replacing iTunes library with iPod library?
Can anyone tell me how I can replace my entire iTunes music library with my iPod music?

The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7, look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod". A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others as well, they are generally quite straightforward. If your library is currently empty and your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting to iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. For the duration of the transfer change your update setting to manual so you can use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it: iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts for OSX
Whichever of these transfer methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • Loss of iTunes library, with entire library still on ipod.

I have lost all of my library without backing it up. I now have the problem of having my entire library (20 gig) still on the ipod. If I sync my ipod with my new computer will I be able to restor my library back onto iTunes?

"Do not" sync your iPod. If it is set to update automatically when you connect you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • Need guidance - replace entire iTunes Match library with new library

Been using iTunes as my music manager/player since 2003. Currently have about 5,000 songs which are a mix of selective CD song rips, iTunes purchases and Amazon Mp3 downloads. Lots of missing artwork, incomplete albums, wrong genres, etc. I use iTunes Match to sync across multiple Macs and iOS devices, including 3 Apple TVs. It all works OK, but I recently undertook a major project to re-rip all of my CDs/Box Sets in their entirety – about 20,000 tracks. I performed the new rips on a Mac Mini running Windows 7 in BootCamp using Roxio Creator to get a 'universal' Mp3 (256kbs) format and keep everything separate and apart from my current iTunes/Match libraries. Total library size came out around 80-85GB, saved on an external USB HDD.
Recently had my iMac 1TB HDD replaced under Apple’s recall program and looked at it as an opportunity to totally rebuild my iTunes library from scratch using the new, complete album rips. I’ve loaded the new 80GB library onto the iMac and am currently using TuneUp Media to ‘clean up’ metadata and album artwork on the new library. I've turned off iTunes Match to isolate the iMac during this stage of the process.
When cleanup is complete, I would like to totally replace my current iTunes Match library with the new larger library. I think the songs will sync OK, but I’ve put a lot if effort into cleaning up the album artwork and am afraid that, if I don't take some precautions, iTunes Match will overrule and mess up my new artwork when I activate it.
    My plan is to
From the iMac, first copy (or should I export) the entire rebuilt library to an external drive as a backup, hopefully preserving all of the artwork and metadata corrections in the process (true?).
On my MacBook Pro, copy my current Match library to a different external drive to ensure preservation of any unique tracks I may have missed in building the new library. Then delete the entire library – both local and Cloud. I should then have an empty iTunes Match library, correct?
Then, on my iMac, activate iTunes Match and let it upload/match all the new songs/data to create a new Cloud library with all the new albums, descriptors and artwork.
Do I need to individually deactivate Match and delete local libraries on all my other devices also, or does the total Cloud library delete I perform on my MacBook Pro then transfer to all my other registered iOS and OSX devices that have Match activated?

Thanks bmw249. I have good news and bad news. Good news: Apple very quickly deauthorized my computers so I was able to drop the lost computer that was taking up a slot and (I suspected) confusing iTunes Match.
The bad news is that this didn't make any difference. Nearly all the songs in my iTunes library have an iCloud status of "error" and when I turn on iTunes Match, it churns for a while before telling me that I already have 25,000 songs in the cloud and can't add any more. What I expected is for it to recognize that most of the 25K songs are the very same ones sitting in this local iTunes library. It should be substantially fewer than 25K because I also deleted 1000+ classical music pieces that I have sitting in Amazon Cloud, in hopes of freeing up space for my recently purchased and created music to be uploaded to iCloud. But no dice.
I am now downloading ~800 songs that iTunes thinks I have only on iCloud. I then plan to figure out how to deactivate iCloud and iTunes Match on this PC so that nothing will be deleted locally when I cancel my iCloud account (it runs out in March 2013 but I assume I can cancel and deactivate the account sooner). The "convenience" of this service isn't worth the many dozens of hours of hours I have spent trying to get it to work the way Apple says it works. Amazon Cloud (also costing ~$25 a year) has a limit of something like 20 GB and no specific limit on number of songs. I buy most music there anyway and have already uploaded most of the rest, so this makes the most sense. I really like the way iTunes Match can (in theory) keep all my music sync'd and smoothly stream to my iPhone even over 3G. Amazon Cloud takes a bit more effort but does much the same thing.
Thanks for listening. I'm assuming this is a "moderated" forum and that this post will soon be removed for my Amazon comments.

  • Ipod library in ITunes freezes with Ipod Mini - HELP

    Hi!
    I have the folowing problem.
When I connect my Ipod Mini, te ITunes recognizes the Ipod and shows me the content of it. However, I can't play any of its songs nor add other songs; everything related to the Ipod in the ITunes is frozen. Please note that I can hear the music outside the Ipod through ITunes. I have already tried the 5R`s but doesnt work.
    Please help!!
    Than you in advance!
    Alan

You have to pod set on "Auto Update" if you want to drag/drop and play songs on your PC from the pod, you have to set it to "Manual update" rightclick the pod in iTunes select "iPod Options" and here you can change it to that if you wish.
If you do this tho you will have to manually eject it from the PC everytime

When I copy the iTunes  folder to an external drive, does all the iTunes metadata and associated album artwork travel together with the raw music file?

  • ITunes reset with no library

I uppgraded my iphone to v4.0 and I've had nothing but problems... The iphone is disastrously slow but that's a whole other issue...
I have restarted iTunes to sync my daughters ipod and again (I had this problem 1 week ago when I tried to sync it) iTunes is telling me that the ipod is synced with another library... Again!!! Why does it have to be that hard... I just want to transfer a new movie onto the device... Last week when this happened, I have to wait over an hour for it to erase and re-add the entire library...
This time, the issue appears even worse... All of my music and videos have vanished from iTunes! Just disappeared... Erasing and syncing will have no affect because there's nothing to sync???
All of my files are on the file system but it appears as if iTunes thinks it is a fresh install???
All I did is follow the iTunes initiated process of upgrading iTunes and my iPhone software...
Could it be anymore difficult to use an Apple product?
Where is my library and how do I re-instate my sync points (without waiting 1-2 hours for the apple software to perform a basic transfer...

Start itunes and immediately press and hold shift as it is loading up. This is the way you can select your library. Then search for the library file which should be in your itunes folder. Hopefully it will use the library and remember it upon restarting itunes.

  • Cross Check Library With iPod?

    Hey Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to cross check your iPod library with your iTunes library. The reason I am asking this question is because I go to my friend's house and get music off of their computers, and now when I look at my iPod, it has 3976 songs. However, my iTunes library only has 3967 songs. I wanted to be able to do a quick check of what songs are not in my iTunes library.
    Thanks for all your help.
PS - No, syncing would not fix my problem for having the same on my ipod as that would erase all my songs on my ipod. Thanks.

I figured it out. If you've been on manual management on the previous version, when you download 7.2 you have to reactivate your manual management on the options list or your Ipod does not connect with iTunes. As simple as that.

  • Sync multiple iTunes libraries with iPod?

How do I sync several iTunes libraries (selectable by holding down ALT while starting iTunes) with my iPod Touch (4th generation)?
With limited hard drive space on my Powerbook I've chosen to create an iTunes library which more or less just contains podcasts and internet radio stations etc. and use an external drive for another library which contains all my music.
I was hoping I could switch between the different libraries and have my iPod sync to both of them, but alas I get a message when switching over to the "music" library that my iPod "belongs to" another library and that if I choose to use the current one everything will be erased and overwritten.
So how do I prevent this from happening while allowing me to add music from the second library?

I'm not sure if I've got it right but I've played around a bit after reading the above and come to the conclusion that I first need to check (turn on) the "Manually manage music and videos" (and most likely "Open Itunes when this iPod is connected") options in iTunes when I click on my iPod icon on the left column.
But much to my surprise I can still have iTunes automatically (or so it seems) sync my podcasts which makes things a whole lot easier than doing that manually for each podcast update!
For everything else (music, videos, PDF files/books/audiobooks, iTunes U, Ringtones etc.) I will need to manually drag and drop over to the iPod. To make things easier I created a playlist folder named "Manually transfer to iPod" with various playlists inside (just to make it easier to see what my iPod contains from that particular library and to organize things neatly).
And instead of dragging the items from each playlist over to the iPod I simply select the folder, then drag all the items on the right hand side (contents) over to the iPod.
I haven't tried switching libraries yet, but I assume I'll be able to add media from there as well without any problems.
    Was this what you meant?

  • Merging ALAC Library with Lossy Library

    Hi,
I'm currently mid-way through ripping all of my physical CDs to Apple Lossless in their own iTunes Library. I have a second iTunes Library (my original iTunes Library) that has a good deal of music that I no longer have physical copies of. Is there a way to add the music from the old (lossy) library into the new ALAC library without having to go through and manually remove the lossy versions of songs that occur in both libraries (the vast majority).
I understand that this will "contaminate" my lossless library with lossy files, but that's okay. I just want everything that I can in losslesss. That said, I don't want to just ignore or get rid of that other music.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Problem syncing itunes 12 with ipod classic on a PC

Hi I just purchased a new Lenovo Yoga Pro 3 and installed the latest itunes 12 on it, but it won't sync with my ipod classic.  The itunes detects my ipod classic, but won't sync the music files and just ejects the ipod instead.  I have tried installing an older version of itunes onto my computer (version 11) but version 11 won't work on this laptop.  Please help!

Unfortunately I cannot get the movies to play through Quicktime at all on the PC - the movie seems to play (timer runs and the little triagle moves), but all I get is a blank screen... The first time I tried to play one of the files, QT told me I may need to download additional codecs (although it did not indicate which one) - and directed me to the third-party codec download site. However, after downloading several of the different codecs, the .mov files still won't play through QT on the PC.
Rule of Thumb: never download codec components arbitrarily. Since the files load into the QT Player, what you should have done was open the "Inspector" window and check the "Format:" entry to see which codec was used to compressed the video and then download the "correct" QT codec component and only the needed one.
Is it not possible to get these files to play on a PC since they were imported and made on an iMac with iMovie?
I would tend to suspect that you may be using an HDD or DVD camcorder here. Basically, the MOV file container is generic and can hold any valid combination of audio and video compression formats. DV would have imported as DV content. AVCHD or HDV would have imported as AIC/AIFF content which is normally supported intrinsically by QT. On the other hand, the content from MPEG2/AC3 based camcorders employs a special iMovie '08 import/conversion module which converts the AC3 to AIFF and the MPEG-2 "P-frames" and "B-frames" to "I-frames" which effectively turns the video into an M-JPEG track but leaves it labeled as MPEG-2 content which would likely confuse the QT Player. Further, if iLife '08 itself installs the playback component for this compression combination, you may not be able to locate/install a Windows version of this playback codec at all and may end up having to convert your DVD stored MOV files on an iLife '08 equipped Mac.

  • Combine '08 library with '09 library

I have just installed '09 iPhoto and have several files on my back up hard drive and would like to have them all together in the new program.
I have iPhoto Library 2, Iphoto Library etc. It sometimes asks me if I want to restart with another library, but I really just want them to all be available all the time without restarting.
What is the best way to get them all together like they were before the new install?
    Thanks,
    N

1 - they must all be the same version - so open each one with iPhoto '09 to convert them to the '09 format (open a copy if you want to ever be able to open the library with the old versino - this is a one way conversion - and having a backup up is a great idea because things can fail)
    2 - use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to merge them

  • Trouble syncing iTunes files with iPod.  Help!

    Hi. Newbie, so be gentle.
I have a lot of songs on my computer. Sometime in the past couple of months, something prevented me from updating certain song files (and the files would vary). What would happen is the iPod would go through the syncing process and get hung up on one song (visible in the the status bar in iTunes). After it gets hung up, the syncing process would stop and I'd get the "OK to disconnect" message, but the file never showed up. On occasion, deleting the song and attempting to resync would make the iPod usuable again (and then I'd just have to reload the song and try again--sometimes that would work, other times it wouldn't).
After numerous problems with this, I talked to a rep at my local Apple store, who suggested that restoring my iPod would be the best solution. So I did. After taking multiple attempts to restore, I finally got the iPod blanked out. But now when it tries syncing to get all of my songs back, it again gets hung up on one song and stops attempting eventually. So from almost 5000 songs on my iPod, I've gone to 14.
Please help! I don't want to buy another iPod (especially because I don't know whether this is a hardware issue with my iPod or a softeware issue with my iPod or iTunes--buying another iPod isn't a guarantee that the same thing won't happen). Hoe else can I troubleshoot this issue?

Sad to say, but I think you have some corrupted music files.
Those are the worst to filter through....
My iPod was doing something similar. Wouldn't update. I finally found the bad file. It wouldn't play in WMP or winamp either, so it wasn't just iTunes being funky.
Luckily mine were like, 5 bad files in a row. Otherwise it takes forever to isolate which ones are causing it.
You could send feedback, I guess...if iTunes finds a bad file, then skip it, instead of shutting down the entire sync process. Maybe if enough of us send this suggestion, it will be implemented.
