Replacing local resources with enterprise resources on assignments
Hi,
After migrating our PS2007 environment to 2013 we encountered a severe problem with the Timesheet view, it seems to be corrupt. We decided to move the projects from one 2013 instance to another, we did this by exporting the projetcs to MPP files and the
publishing them to the new insance and we also used the FluentPro migrator 2013 tool. In both situations for each project we get prompted if the local resources should be replaced by the Enterprise resources found on the PS2013 server, we would very much like
that but this feature doesn't seem to work. We have to add the Enterprise resources manually and then replace the local resources one by one on the assignments. Since we have quite some projects with assignments this is undoable. Is this a known issue or are
there perhaps some work arounds?

This is a known issue with import project function. Have you installed latest CU on Project Server as well as Project Pro 2013?

Project Templates with Enterprise Resources
I'm using Project Server 2013 ( latets updates installed for both Client and Server)
I've created a project template and attached this to a project type. My template has enterprise resources speciified. So far so good.
Now I'm trying to create a project using this template and I'm getting some errors. (See below)
As soon as I remove the resources from my template the project creates fine.
It looks like 'rsResourceCannotAddLocalWithSameNameAsEnterprise' in the error below means that Project Server looks at the resource in the template and considers the resources in the template always to be a local resources. And of
course the resource already exists in my enterprise resources and therefore the project creation fails.

My questions are:
Are Enterprise Resources in templates supported?
Is there a way around this? We're trying to make it easy to select a subset of the enterprise resources available.I have experienced this exact same thing and my situation is highly irregular.
This is with Project Server 2013.
I had an EPT with a Project Schedule that had Generic Enterprise Resources assigned and was able to create new projects without problems using the EPT from the New button in the Project Centre in PWA.
I was creating new projects to test and demonstrate Portfolio Analysis and was able to model Organisational Capacity represented by my Generic Resources and also the Surplus/Deficit element of Resource Constraints on a Portfolio. The Hired Resource Report
was failing.
A Service Pack and Cumulative update were applied to the Server and now I cannot create new projects using EPTs that have a project schedule with Generic Enterprise Resources assigned to tasks in the schedule.
I checked the error message for the Failed and Blocking job in the queue and the GUIDs were for my Generic Enterprise Resources. I deleted the offending Generic Enterprise Resources and then re-created them anew, edited the Project Template to have
these Generic Enterprise Resources on the Project Team and randomly assigned them to tasks in the schedule to generate a notional demand for work in the Project Template. I then Saved the Template in Project as a new Project Template and edited my EPT
to reference this new Project Schedule.
Same error encountered again.
Perversely I can open the Template schedule in Project Professional and do Save As and save it as a new project to the Server and that works just fine - the schedule is visible in the Project Centre and I can edit the schedule in both Project Pro and in
PWA.
My hunch is that the Cumulative Update and Service Pack which were applied to try and resolve the failing "Hired Resources Report" in Portfolio Analysis, which sadly it didn't resolve - has probably provoked this interesting challenge as it is
the only material thing to change on the Server during the time that this issue has manifested itself.
Am I the only one to encounter this?

Code for assignment for local and enterprise resource to a task?

I have programming in VB.net a code, that assiged a local resource to a task:
Ass=ActiveProject.Resources.Item(RessNummer).Assignments.Add(t_temp.ID)
If I use this code with enterprise resource, this error occured:
"NullReferenceException was unhandled by user code"
How can I write
the code
so that it works for both
types of resources?

They should both work the same way. So do you have the Enterprise Resource added to the project? Use the
Application.EnterpriseResourceGet method to do this.

Converting Local resource to corresponding Enterprise resource using Macro

AnujaUnfortunately it is not just a property wich is required to change the local resource into an enterprise resource. Project will overwrite the local resource's metadata with the enterprise resource metadata (calendar, rate, custom fields...). It could be
quite complicated to override this process and require a complex coding solution.
Why not asking the users to first create the project team from the enterprise resource pool, so they'll use from the beginning enterprise resources and will not have the dialog box while saving the project?

Hi,
Normally when we add Users as enterprise resources in the project server. Project manager would be able to add the users in project plan after which the user would be able to access PWA to enter time.
My question is does microsoft project server 2007 has an option where I want to add the user as Enterprise resource but not let the resource log into pwa and enter efforts.Idea is to have resources as enterprise resources in Project plan. Do we have
any option in Project server to do this. Please advise

A resource which is only a resource and not a user (meaning with no valid AD account) cannot log in any way to Project Server (including PWA) thus cannot use any feature like timesheet or project site.
Project Server 2010 introduced a feature called "delegation" which allows a user submitting
a timesheet (or doing any other operation) on behalf of another user. The restriction is that it applies only to users and not resources with no valid account.
Finally, to do waht you want to do, I'd suggest to use the assignment owner column in MS Project Pro. If a task is assigned to a resource (and not a user), it will not be able to create and submit a timesheet, neither his manager to act of his behalf. But
if the manager enters his name for the assignment in the assignment owner column in MS Project Pro and publishes the project plan, then he'll receive the assignment in his own timesheet. This feature allows giving a status update and/or asubmitting timesheet
on behalf of someone who cannot do it for any reason, like for a customer who does not have a CAL (licence).

Why Do I get 0h hours for resources after using Resource Levelling in Project 2010?

We are using MSProject 2010 and Project Server 2010 with Enterprise resources. All resources on all projects in the enterprise are shared resources. We are finding that after resource levelling is applied to the project some resources are only
being assigned a fraction of their total availability, and in some cases Project will assign 0 hours to a resource for several consecutive weeks even though the resource has capacity for the week the task is scheduled to start.
For example: Let's say we have a task that is scheduled to start on 1-20-14. The task is a 112 hours of effort with no constraints and one resource assigned to it. The resource is available 40 hours per week for the next 4 weeks. After resource
levelling I would expect Project to assign the resource as follows: 40 hours in week 1, 40 hours the next week and 32 hours the next week, for a total of 112 hours. Instead, Project does not assign the resource to the task until week 4 (even
though the resource has capacity on the start date of the task) and pushes the finish date out. In some weeks the resource has 0h hours showing in the timephased grid on the Resource Usage sheet. We have experimented with the levelling settings and it
does not seem to matter which boxes are checked, but following is our preferred settings:
1. Levelling Calculations set to Manual
2. Look for overallocations on a day by day basis
3. Clear levelling values before levelling is CHECKED
4. Level entire project is selected.
5. Levelling order is Priority,Standard
6. Level only within available slack is CHECKED
7. Levelling can adjust individual assignments on a task is CHECKED
8. Levelling can create splits in remaining work is UNCHECKED
9. Level resources with the proposed booking type is UNCHECKED
10. Level manually scheduled tasks is CHECKED.
Does anyone have any ideas about why Project is not using the resource's available capacity?

Thanks to give us more detail. But actually if you need to level a resource, it means that this resource is overallocated. In your example, since it is not overallocated on the 12weeks task you mention, it means that it should be assigned on another task.
If not, there would be no need to perform any resource levelling.
Concerning the fact that levelling assign resource at 0hr per week, this can be absolutely normal.
Imagine that you have a resource working at 100% on 2 tasks on the same period. imagine also that there is actual work on one of the 2 tasks. Project will level the resource, meaning that it will move ahead the remaining work of one of the task (depending
on the levelling parameters). But the actual work will not move, thus between the actual work and the moved-foreward remaining work, the resource will be assign at 0hr by time period on the splitted task.
Please check all the task of the levelled resource and actual work.

Resource Center - Need to change a Local Resource to an Enterprise Resource
The Resource Record for a resource was accidently deleted. This resource was still assigned to active project tasks at the time of the delete. A new Resource Record was created but it has the resource as a Local Resource. How can I move
this resource back to the Enterprise Resource Pool?
As a Local Resource the Assignment Owner field on his assigned tasks are not populating, so he cannot see any tasks on his timesheets. Also, the resource cannot be assigned to any new project tasks because he cannot be added to the Project Enterprise
Pool.
Attempted to remove the Resource Record that was created using Delete Enterprise Objects -> Resources and Users but since the resource is Local and not Enterprise his record is not showing to select it for delete.
Would the Admin Restore->Enterprise Resource Pool and Calendars functionality put his original record back in place? I understand only one version of this backup is kept but that should be the version we currently have. What data might be
lost using this functionality? Any chance other users would be adversely impacted?

As mentionned in your previous post, restoring the resource pool should work, since it is restoring resources with their metadata and with the exact same UID. Thus the deleted and restored enterprise resource should have everything back (assignments, timesheets...).
Since I never tested such as process, I strongly advice to test it in the dev environment on a simple test case.
I remember that if also adviced you to recreate the enterprise resource and type in the resource sheet on one of the resource's project the exact enterprise resource name (exact same syntax), so Project should ask you when saving if you want to replace the
local resource by the enterprise one. Can you confirm that it didn't work?

The hastp resource control the vx volumes which it is not global fs but local.
The only way to solve this is to make the fs global and then register again,

pavlosYou must create a resource SUNW.HAStoragePlus for the mount of local fs. When you register your ldap resource you must specify the dependency beetween ldap reourse and your HAStoragePlus resource.

Restore Enterprise Resource Record
An active Resource was incorrectly deleted from Resource Center. The record has now been added back but the Resource cannot see any of his projects or tasks on his timesheet. I believe this is because he was made a Local Resource when
he was deleted. How can this Resource be added back to the Enterprise Resource Pool? When he is restored to the Enterprise Resource Pool will his project/tasks assignments be back or does he need to be assigned to them

It has to be tested but here is my thought:
When deactivating or deleting the enterprise resource, it will be converted in the project plans into a local resource (keeping actual, work...). If you then recreate the resource with the exact same syntax and open the project plans, when publishing, Project
will detect that the local resource has the same name than an enterprise resource and propose you to replace it. Clicking "YES", it will thus recreate assignments for the enterprise resource, meaning tasks and timesheets.
This could be tedious since it requires to open and publish every project the resource was assigned to.
Once more, I haven't tested it.

are running fine.
I think there is some bug in the wlserver 6.1 to create the join table. I think
it is the time I should ask the bea wlserver 6.1.

Project Server 2010 - Active Directory Enterprise Resource Pool Synchronization limitations
Greetings again.
I have a quick question about the limitations of Active Directory Enterprise Resource Pool Synchronization. Specifically, what has your experience
been with extremely large numbers of users (10k plus). Is anyone aware of a
practical limit of users in your AD group you would recommend when using the
Schedule Synchronization feature on a nightly or weekly basis?
There is a caveat to this question however. The client has decided (perhaps for some misinformed reasons) to allow access for every user, to every
project site, within their PWA environment. They’ve selected the View Project Site option within the
Categories for the Team Members PWA Group for which 90% of their intended users reside. So when we ran a couple test syncs in DEV with a smaller AD group of about 8,000 users, the sync understandably
lasted upwards of 18 hours. Obviously unacceptable for a PROD environment on a nightly basis and not necessarily ideal for a weekly sync either.
Experience in addition to documents like these, “Best
practices for managing a large number of resources in Project Server 2010” tell me that we are way over the practical limit of a scheduled resource pool synchronization...IF
the client really desires that all users access all their sites. But before I submit my recommendations, I wanted to check with the community just in case others may have found a way to synchronize large numbers of users (10k plus) on a nightly or weekly
basis, within a reasonable time frame AND allowed all users to access all sites within PWA.
What do you think?

My delayed response has been due to a large amount of testing we have been performing on this particular topic. Here is an update, please feel free to provide feedback.
We went back to testing and spent more time reviewing the documents:
Best practices for managing a large number of resources in Project Server 2010 and
SharePoint Server 2010 capacity management: Software boundaries and limits. Our team interpreted those documents as saying, 1,000 security
scopes per site is a recommended limit. It does not say it’s a hard limit, just a recommended limit. “When the recommended unique security scope boundaries are exceeded, performance issue can occur.”
So we decided to perform some tests (31 in total) to try and get a gage of what we are seeing.
We needed to establish a baseline first. So we performed a series of 23 Active Directory Resource Pool Synchronizations with various settings in a clean, Out of the Box, environment in order to see some consistent numbers. Here is it’s summary:
Our AD group of 8,000 users took about 32 minutes, on average, every time to sync. The difference between the first sync and last sync differed only by 1-3 minutes.
Adding 40 project sites increased the average sync time from 32 to 120 minutes.
Adding 100 users to each of those 40 project sites, did not increase the sync times.
One setting (identified at this time) reduced the synchronization time. It was the
Project Site Permissions check box found within the Project Web App > Server Settings > Project Site Provisioning Settings area. By deselecting this check box we reduced or synchronization time back to the 32 minute
average.
The View Project Site check box within the Project Web App > Server Settings > Manage Groups > Team Members group had no apparent effect on the sync times besides what we had gleaned from the Microsoft documentation.
Naturally, this left us with a problem. As I’m sure you know, by deselecting the check box (Project Site Permissions), our project sites are now (figuratively speaking) orphans with no connection to the parent site. This generates
a new set of issues. For example:
Newly created project sites cannot be accessed by the owner and team members. They will require someone like the farm admin to come in behind them and add the intended users to the project site along with their required permissions.
All current and futures sites will no longer have users added via the standard method of building a team and publishing the project, but will have to be added manually.
You can use the Synchronize option found within Project Web App > Server Settings > Project Sites page, but that kinda defeats the purpose. It would require constant updating on a per site basis to keep up with
PM changes. Not very sensible, but it does work.
With this baseline information, we moved our tests into our DEV environment which somewhat mimics our PROD environment. This environment has 352 project sites and we performed 8 tests. This is where we had some large sync time numbers.
Here is the DEV test summary:
With the Project Site Permissions check box cleared, our AD group of 8,000 users took on average 30 minutes to sync. This was in line with our baseline times. With the exception of one test sync that took 99 minutes to complete.
That anomaly is acquiescent with what I’ve seen over the years. Sometimes syncs do some unusual things.
With the Project Site Permissions check box selected, our AD group of 8,000 users took on average 690 minutes (11.5 hours) to sync. Unacceptable of course.
So here’s what we’ve learned when dealing with extremely large numbers of active directory users in your Resource Pool sync:
We did not see a decrease in subsequent sync times after the initial Active Directory Resource Pool Synchronization as some might expect.
Our attempt to decrease sync time via the option of removing the View Project Sites was not successful. (Unless we interpreted Microsoft's document incorrectly.)
However, our interpretation of the recommended software boundaries and limits of SharePoint Server 2010 as it pertains to security scopes per site at 1,000, appears to be correct.
Using the option of clearing the Project Site Permissions does produce a reduction in AD sync time, but at a cost segregating your project sites and thus the creation of new processes of maintaining them.
I’ll remind others that these results are particular to our environments, there may still be exceptions yet to discover. Others may see numbers contrary to ours.
The biggest surprise to some members on our team (myself excluded) was that we did not see a reduced sync time after any of our initial syncs. Some are under the impression that after your initial sync, you should see reduced sync times. I haven’t
found that to be the absolute case in all situations, just in some situations. The reason for this still eludes me. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I’ll let this sit a bit longer, but if no one disagrees with the results, I think we have our answer:
The number of project sites directly affects your Active Directory Resource Pool Synchronizations if you are using the
Project Site Permissions option. If you plan on synchronizing over 1,000 users
and you have a large number of project sites, proceed with the knowledge that you may have performance issues and long sync times.
As always, I’d love to hear from you or others just in case I’m missing something.

I wrote a forecasting report for a customer which creates an excel spreadsheet with the information
Depending on how they run the report it can take between 5 to 15 minutes to run
We have just upgraded the customer to SAP 8.8 PL10 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and they seem to be getting an error -
Microsoft sql client deadlocked on lock resources with another process .......
The error seems intermittent, they may get the error once and the next time they run it, it is fine.
I have never seen this error before and they never had it before on SAP 2005
Can anyone suggest anything please?

I was having the same problem. I'm gonna tell you what i did.
My query usually takes from 10 to 15 minutes to show results. That long time also block all transaction in the database.
I was reading about some techniques to improve queries performance. Some of the tips are:
1. Review indexes in the table you are querying
2. Use Views
3. Avoid cursors
4. Archive old data
5. Use the correct transaction isolation level
The last one, was the tip that helped me to avoid the block in the database.
By default the isolation level in SQL Server is Read Commited, that explains why the database block some transactions. For example, if you have a query that take data from JDT1 table and it takes several minutes to show the results, other transactions that try to write in the same table should be blocked if they arrive at the same time of the first query.
To solve this, you can make your query in a transaction with Snapshot isolation level. It means that your select query will take a snapshot of the data without blocking any other transaction.
Here is an example how you can make it. The difference is that you may use ADO.NET connection replacing DI API Connection:

I have to display a particular set of rows in a dashboard or screen, and it is being refreshed every 1 minute, also user can update from that screen displayed values.
The below program extracts some data from database and passes to the front end through a collection where it is being displayed.
Code Logic Flow
1. CockpitAction calls CockpitOraDAO for database results
2. CockpitOraDAO is a singleton class.
3. After getting the CockpitOraDAO object, the action will then call the getLabAreaCockpitDetails() method.
getLabAreaCockpitDetails will
- Get the Connetion from the OracleConnectionManager class (It is a plain class with getPooledConnection() and releaseConnection() methods).
- Execute the query and put the result to a collection
- close the connection
- return result to the calling action.
This getLabAreaCockpitDetails() are called around once in every 1 minute
So, I believe everytime a call is made to action for cockpit display, it will take the existing object of the CockpitOraDAO class and make a call to database. i.e there will be only one object of CockpitOraDAO reside in application server at any particular interval of time.
My Understandings
1. Only 1 object of CockpitOraDAO will reside in application server (provided it is not user longer and garbage collected) at a particular instance.
2. Many objects of Connection will be created and destroyed.(Each time the getLabAreaCockpitDetails() method is called, we will get one connection from connection pool and in finally the Connection will be released to connection pool).
My Problems
It is showing the "Cannot get Local Connection, No available resource, Wait-time expired"
after running around 1 full day.
My doubts
1. Can anybody say why I get this error ?
2. There may be some connections are not closed. But I have checked at finally block, the status of the connection is closed after calling this method.
3. There may be some problem due to the singleton instane of CockpitOraDAO, Is it affecting performance ?
4. Is it valid that I have to make CockpitOraDAO as Singleton ?

As you can see from other posts, this is a very common problem. Until now the cause always ends up pointing to a connection not being close.
I suggest you try to run through a full single cycle of you app, while using the CLI monitoting to check that the connections created/closed matches the expected created/closed connections. Also that the number of free connections at the end is correct.

We installed AS/10g Release 1 (9.0.4), with Mid-Tier on one server and Infrastructure on another. Is it possible to install Release 2 (10.1) Mid-Tier using the Rel. 1 Infrastructure? It would run on a third server. Or if we upgrade Infrastructure to
