Replacing MPG assets - unreliable

What's the best way to replace an MPG asset that is in use in Enc2.0, while keeping its chapter points/poster frames in position?
When I export a new version of the MPG from PPro2, Enc2.0 sees it, and opens it, but if the new version is longer, it won't allow me to extend the timeline to its true length...
Also, if the new version is "shifted in time" because it has extra material at the start/middle, all the existing Encore created chapter points will now be at the wrong time. Is there a way in Enc2.0 to select all the chapters markers and drag them? If not, is there a way to copy all chapters and paste them into a new timeline.
My current work around is to import the new MPG as a new asset and manually recreate all the chapter points. I'm also going to try adding the chapters in PPro2, but that still won't help me with the poster frames. I think a copy/paste chapters markers would be the best option if it exists. If not, Adobe should add it!

Try the "Edit Original" command in Encore if you haven't already.
Another option would be the Replace Asset command.

  • Is it possible to replace all assets in a project?

    Hi
I have just finished the first DVD of a series consisting of 26 menus (18 buttons each, except for the main menu which has 25 buttons), 75 playlists, 323 video files, 24 audio files, 33 timelines (up to 45 chapters each). In every case a video file corresponds to just one chapter. Total 3,4 Gb more or less.
I had a lot of problems (general error, out of memory, sorry an abnormal condition has occurred...) during the DVD build process, and I finally had to start from scratch and create new versions every few steps to get this thing to build. Took a long time as I had to save as, then build to see if it worked, then close the file, then reopen and start a new version, ended up with 27 versions.
I have to prepare the rest of the DVDs, which will have exactly the same structure, although some of the videos may be slightly different in length (just a few seconds difference).
Is it possible at all just to rename all the assets to avoid re authoring the whole thing, and then review only the timelines including the different lenghted videos?
    Thanks a lot

    Graciela Caro,
When faced with a similar Project (ended up being a set of 18 DVD-5's with the same structure), I built a test Project to work out the details and finally got everything as I wanted, then burned a DVD RW.
I took the "test" and built a "template" with all of my Bins/Folders, Menus (knowing that I'd change these, as each DVD would be similar, but unique) and Imported just the Assets that would be common, like the First Play and a lead-in to the Main Menu. This I Saved to a master folder. For each individual DVD, I opened that "template" Project and did a Save_As into the appropriate folder for that piece of the Project, i.e. Barry_DVDs_01. For each of these, I Imported the Assets unique to that phase of the overall Project. Then, it was just a matter of creating the individual Playlists, etc., and linking. I helped myself by doing a Flowchart in Illustrator. For each phase, I swapped out the Menus, and altered the Links to suit. This gave me the full schematic of each sub-Project. I used these for myself in the Linking process, and also used them for the client to sign off on. He knew exactly what was going to be on each DVD in the set, and how the navigation would work. In Illustrator, I kept things in their Layers, so it was easy to make changes for each sub-Project. Any changes after the Flowchart had been approved cost more $. The client knew this and could see exactly what was happening at every step.
Though it's some additional work, if you have the Project (your "test") finialized, and know that you'll be duplicating it many times, just with different Assets, I'd urge you to adopt something similar. It should not take long to re-create a blank Project with all of the common aspects in it. Use this as a "template," and do a Save_As of it, to begin each phase. It keeps the XML Links that have to be re-done to a minimum, 'cause you're starting with a semi-clean slate for each one.
As Jbowden points out, just replacing the Assets can lead to problems. I did not even want to go the Replace Assets command route, to keep the Project file from possibly getting corrupted by overwriting the Links, even using the correct, approved process.
Just make sure to place a copy of your "template" Project well away from the area that your working in on your I/O system. Make it Read Only, for safe-keeping, in case you forget to do the Save_As. I actually made two copies - one onto a DVD just for safety.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

I usually just write over the file with the same file name, often with DVDSP closed.
If you're doing an m2v file and the duration has changed, just go the the end of the clip in the track and drag it right as far as you can. Otherwise it'll replace the asset but use the previous version's duration.

  • Replaced an asset and now project won't open

I was finishing up some subtitles when I noticed an audio problem that needed to be corrected.
So I saved my DVDSP4 project, quit the program, then made a quick audio cut in FCP. The amount of audio cut was less than a second. And because I cut my audio, I had to make a cut in my video.
Then I exported using Compressor (DVD Best Quality - 90 mins). I saved over the original asset, figuring I could save some time and have DVDSP automatically update the altered asset.
That was my mistake. I've spent the better part of two days adding subtitles to this project, and now the frigging thing won't open.
When I opened the DVDSP project file, all my windows are missing excpect for the Palette and Inspector windows. The majority of menu options from the menu bar couldn't be accessed.
However, when I open DVDSP from my dock, it opens up, all the windows are there, and the menu bar is fully functional. When I try to open the project file I've been working on using File>Open and File>Open Recent, I lose my windows and functionality.
Any suggestions as to correct the problem?
Quad G5, Coded Named: Mistress   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

If Houghts' suggestion doesn't clear the problem initially, you could try going back a stage (in FCP).
First make a copy of your new .m2v & sound files with a different name, and also the DVD SP project.
Next open the edited film in FCP. Assuming you have the sequence for the previous edit, redo the playout with the same settings and name you that had originally, and without the one second cut. Overwrite the originally named files with these. Exit FCP. Delete all the PAR files and prefs for DVD SP again, as per Houghts above.
Now try opening your project - since the assets referred to are the same length as before, there's a chance that DVD SP won't get confused, and will re-link to them.
If it opens, you are back on track and can import the new versions, replace, then delete, as per Houghts above.

  • Is there an easy way to replace/swap assets?

I output my short from Avid, ran it through Compressor, and made a DVD in DVD Studio Pro.
Now I've done some re-cuts and want to create a DVD of the new version, using the DVD Studio Pro file I used for the last DVD. Is there an easy way in DVD Studio Pro to "relink" the new video assets to replace the old ones in the new version? This would save me from rebuilding the main menu button, redesigning navigation, and recreating chapter marks.
I have found a workaround - Quit DVD Studio Pro, "hide" the old assets in a folder, and then direct DVD Studio Pro to the new assets when it asks where the old assets are located. But I wonder if there is an easier way to do this from inside the program.
Thanks very much for any advice!
I am using DVD Studio Pro version 4.2.1

    Eric, thanks for chiming in.
I assume you mean replace the old ones with the new ones on the Finder level?
Well, part of my goal is to avoid destroying, re-naming, or moving the old assets.

  • Problems replacing m2v assets

i regularly run into a problem when i try to replace an existing m2v asset in a dvdsp project in that the new asset is not properly loaded, it only displays a black screen.
the new m2v file is created using the exact same presets as the original file
    also the duration hasn't changed
i can open the m2v file in mpeg streamclip without a problem
and dvdsp doesn't warn me that assets have changed or throw an error message at me ....
a little stumped at what the cause is
usually i solve it by re-encoding the file - with the same preset again, but using a slightly different name
oh and deleting the PAR folder doesn't solve the problem either ...
anyone else run into this problem?
    any solutions/suggestions/workarounds?
    thanks

Funny you should ask...I posted about this on Sunday and figured out the problem (my thread is here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=535301&tstart=30)
    Here's what I discovered...
Basically, there seems to be a bug in DVDSP where it will still reference the old file (it seems to be in the PAR folder, and that it doesn't parse the new asset but references the old still). The main problem seems to be when you are using/referencing the old file in motion menus or something else.
What I found I had to do was this:
    1) Move the original asset to another location
    2) Make sure the new asset is named differently than the original file
    3) Delete the original PAR folder
    4) open DVDSP and the project
    5) use the re-link function to replace the missing asset with the new one
By doing this, it creates a fresh parse file and substitutes the new asset with the old in every instance that the old was used (this seems to be the big 'bad' in getting that blank screen.

  • Replacing Assets Works, and Doesn't Work.

I'm using a Dell 720 PC, QuadCore processor, Windows XP with all current service packs and patches, 4GB RAM, and Premier Production Studio CS3 (with all patches).
I have a dual-boot system, with a "Clean" install (only the OS, Premier, TMPGEncXpress and Cineform NeoScene) on one disk, and a "Messy" install on another disk (all the above listed software, plus everything else under the sun, including anti-virus and anti-spyware software, email/ftp clients Nero 7 etc).
I have an HD (1440x1080, 30FPS) project which was originally created on the Messy system. It's about 8 minutes long and created with a Canon XH-A1. The project consists of a video file (created in Adobe Media Encoder from the original Premier Pro CS3 project), one menu, one sub-menu, and two audio tracks.
I booted to the Clean system and opened the project. I had done some work on the audio tracks, and rather than re-do the entire DVD and menus, I used Encore's "Replace Asset" feature and swapped the old audio track with the new one. No problem.
Then I wanted to replace the main video asset with another, slightly higher quality version. I used the "Replace Asset" feature, as above, to replace the old video (a 250 MB M2V file) with the new one (also an M2V file, just slightly larger).
It seems Encore replaces the video in a 2-step process. The progress bar zipped across to 100% on the first step, then rapidly went to 50% on the second step. From there, the time-to-completion indicator continued to increase, but the process never progressed past 50%. I looked at Windows' Task Manager, and my Quad Core processor was running at 25% overall and there was almost no disk activity. After 5 minutes, I cancelled the operation. Encore never recovered, and I had to kill it. I tried again, with the same results.
I tried the exact same steps on the Messy Windows installation, and had no trouble replacing the video asset (it took about 6 seconds), so "something" on the Clean system is screwed up. I'd actually expect the Clean system to be the more reliable of the two!
Do you think a reinstall of Encore is the only way to solve this? Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, what was the solution?
    Thanks.

Are you using the same file name to replace the assets?
If so - try using a different name for each incremental version instead as the cache might be getting confused/corrupted due to (apparent) multiple instances of the same asset.
Failing that, what happens if you create new timelines instead of attempting to replace?

  • Replacing assets in the project. without losing chapter marks.

From a workflow point of view, this is not a proper way, but since I'm a mere hobbyist, not so much of an issue.
From PP I export an M2V file and an AC3 file, import those as assets into the Encore project, create a timeline, set my chapter markers, create a moving menu, render, great. No problem.
Then I decide to change something in my timeline, so back to PP, modify my timeline, export again and then....
    b Try to replace assets
but that does not work as I expect. (The manual and help file are rather abbreviated on these topics). Either I lose all my previous markers or I get a second clip right after the first one on my timeline, or - even worse - I get, after renaming files in Explorer, new assets on my timeline with the correct length, but cannot extend my timeline to reflect the length that is shown in the project window.
A second problem I have encountered is that there is no way to save markers, no way to replace an asset in a timeline without losing all markers and, after creating new markers, having them revert to the default names and forgetting all the previously set names and links. Effectively, you have to start all over.
What is the best way, once you have a timeline with chapter markers on them, to replace your asset?
    Any suggestions? TIA

This is not the first time I am re-thinking my work flow to match the way Adobe designed their software . . . conforming if you will.
Based on the way Premiere and Encore is designed, I think Adobe is expecting ALL changes to the video content to be completely ironed out, video set in stone, before adding chapter markers and exporting to Encore . . . as if adding chapters is part of the DVD burning process rather than part of the video itself. I have been around long enough to understand where that thinking comes from, but it is not very visionary thinking oh great architects of Adobe.
Conforming my work flow: (high level work flow)
    1> burn DVD without chapters
2> customer reviews the video content without chapters
    3> customer submits change requests
4> goto step one until no video content change requests
    ----- architectural divide ----
5> Still in Premiere, add chapters & export to Encore
6> Now in Encore, edit chapter text
    7> set the poster frames
    6> burn DVD with chapters
    7> customer reviews chapter information
8> customer submits chapter change requests
9> goto step six until no chapter content change rquests
This is the workflow I will use conform, but it is not the workflow I want to use. Two reasons:
1> I want my customer to have the convienience of using chapters during the video review process.
2> I do not want to put my customer through two aproval processes.

  • After replace asset length difference

The video asset in my timline is a m2v file. The audio asset is a WAV file. Both have been created with the stand a lone version of ProCoder 2. The assets imported correctly and were displayed correctly on the timeline. I had to make changes to the original Premiere project and replaced the assets. The new assets are shorter. Encore shows the striped pattern at the end of the assets. I can trim the end of video to the correct ending, but the trim of the audio doesn't work. I can't trim the audio to the same spot as the video. It only allows a trim one frame short of the video. If I create a new timeline it works fine, but then I have to recreate all my 54 chapter marks. I can strangly trim the video and the audio to the previous I-frame, but only the video to the actual length. in another project the audio was even stopping between a frame.

I have this issue with all my projects. As far as I'm aware, there is no workaround; it seems like a waste of time adding chapter points!

  • Replace asset for a Premiere dynamic linked sequence

I linked Premiere sequences via Dynamic Link to Encore. I had trouble with Encore freezing during transcode. Therfore to make it quick I rendered the sequences to MPEG-2 from Premiere using AME. This worked. I tried to replace the assets, but when I click right on an imported sequence Replace Asset is greyed out. Even it is a sequence from Premiere it is an asset and should be able to be replaced. I can't remove the sequence asset from the timeline in Encore, because all the chapter markers and links are set already. It is an instructional DVD of 4 hours with 120 chapter markers and 12 menus. Nothing you want to do over again.
I tried to use Locate Transcode instead. My thought is that I can point to the transcoded MPEG-2 files to have Encore "replace" the asset. I got an error that the length of the sequence and the transode file don't match. I don't know why this is since it is the same timeline that was just rendered from Premiere.
Does anybody has any insight or know a proper way to replace a Dynamic Linked Sequence with the rendered MPEG-2 file?
    Marcus

    Hi Stan,
apparently a DL sequence is not treated as a regular asset, which is not understandable. There should be a possibility to replace a DL sequence with another clip. Revert to original doesn't work either. In my case I wanted to replace the DL sequence with the encoded files. I encoded the files directly from Premiere due to the AME queue not using GPU problem. As a workaround for my case I found the option "Locate transcoded file". I could point to the transcoded files and was able to burn the disc.

  • Jerky Playback & asset replacement issue

    Hi,
Just downloaded the trial version in order to see if it corrects some things I needed on 1.5
So appart from the better responce and added features wich are great I have 2 problems (so far!).
Problem No1 is that the playback of the mpeg (*.m2v) file on the timeline and DVD Preview is very jerky and unstable. I used the same assets in 1.5 and playback is fine there.
Problem No2 and major for me is that when I replace assets in a previously created project the asset length doesn't adjust automaticaly. That is not a problem if the asset beeing replaced was longer since I can drag the end of the replacement asset on the timeline, and it snaps to the right length. But when the asset beeing replaced is shorter than the new asset there is no way I can drag the end of it to he new duration. Only way is to delete the m2v from the timeline and re-enter it, but that deletes all chapters and links to allready created menus with it. Is there anything I can do about that? I use asset replacement every day and this is a major drawback for me. I will have to stick to 1.5 for the time beeing...
Anyhow thanks for a great piece of software wich I was much expecting and sure to buy soon.
    Cheers
    Christos

    Christos.
For the asset replacement options that are not working as you expect, try this:
    PROBLEM:
When replacing an asset in a timeline that is longer than the original, it is not always possible to extend the duration of the new clip by dragging it.
    METHOD:
    1. Create a new project.
    2. Import an .m2v file and it's corresponding .wav file.
    3. Make a timeline with these assets.
    4. Click the .m2v or .wav asset in the project window, press Ctrl-H, and replace it with an .m2v file that is LONGER than the original. After importing notice in the timeline that the new length is the same as the old one.
    5. Drag the tail of the replaced clip to extend its duration.
    RESULT:
When you drag the tail of the .m2v or .wav file to extend the duration, the clip 'flickers." If you release the mouse when the clip "flickers" off or when the mouse is beyond the maximum duration of the clip, it reverts to the original duration. The same behaviour is exhibited when trimming the clip.
Note: Although .avi files exhibit similar flickering, you can extend or trim the clips without issue.
    EXPECTED:
The duration of the clip should always be extended or trimmed to the point where the mouse is when the button is released. If the mouse is beyond the maximum duration of the clip, the duration should be extended to its maximum (like PPro).
    WORKAROUND:
    1. Position the CTI at the desired out point.
    2. Drag the tail of the .m2v or .wav file as close to the CTI as possible while it still "flickers" on.
    3. Zoom in on the tail of the clip and repeat step 2 until the clip reaches the desired duration.

  • Replace Asset Chapter Errors

Exporting out of Premiere as DV AVI for use in Encore 2.0
I have a wedding video that needed some corrections. The overall length has changed, so the exact position of the chapters has changed. The total number of chapters remains the same, as well as the chapter names. But whenever I replace the asset in Encore with the new one, Encore seems to still be using the old chapter locations, so they're all off.
I would like to have Encore see the new positions of those chapter markers and keep them linked to the same buttons so I don't have to reauthor this beast. Anyone know how to do that?

    > Originally created as Sequence markers in Premiere, exported out as DV AVI. I would have thought that Encore would see the new markers and make the adjustments automatically, but it doesn't seem to be doing so.
Yet again, I must reiterate what the proper practise is here in these situations.
DO NOT try to replace assets with something using the same name, but a different cut/edit/length. This is asking for trouble.
When you import an asset/create a timeline, you are creating files that refer back to assets, giving details of those assets.
If something changes this much, delete & reimport with a new name. It is an Abstraction Layer tool, and does not have a special "telepathic mode".
Please try to remember Encore is an authoring/assembly tool, and NOT an editor.

  • Replace ipad mini with a newer version

I got my 2nd ipad mini replacement from apple service center here in the Philippines last January 31, 2014. Technically this is my 3rd ipad mini (from the 1st that i bought to the 1st and 2nd replacement). After two weeks of use i noticed that it has also the same defects as with my 1st ipad mini replacement. (What is the odd of having 3 defective ipad minis?!) Apple service center here replace defective ipad mini with brand new one instead of repairing the product if and only if the defects is caused by hardware problems. I am planning to take this back to apple service center. My question is, is it possible to replace my ipad mini with the newer version? (i am very sure that they will still replace this with a new one.) Their price difference is just about Php5,000. I can just add for their price difference.

let's say i have an asset which is a Photoshop file,
filename "v1". i want to replace the asset with a
newer version of the Photoshop file, filename "v2".
how do i replace the "v1" asset with the "v2" asset,

  • Replacing assest

I've competed a project, but the client reedited the video but want the exact same DVD. Chapters are the same, everything is the same, except the video asset. Can I simply replace the asset and fine tune it or do I have to start from scratch. I can't delete the old asset and when I tried to move it to a different location on the computer, is didn't ask me to re-link assets when I opened the project. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You should be able to remove the asset from the timeline and place the new asset in there. On thing you should do is duplicate the timeline (or export the description) so as to not lose it if needed. (Also make a copy of the project.) Another trick - zip the prior asset (or move it off the computer to a hard drive then disconnect the hard drive) and replace the assets with the new asset with the same exact name. You should get a message that the asset is updated after you reopen the project. I would use this trick first.
