Replacing my HD - guide? Advice? Software?

Hi
I'm looking for some advice. I'm considering replacing my 60GB HD with a Seagate 120HD as I've read this is a good drive to go for.
What I'm interested in is finding out how difficult this whole process is? As far as I can see I need to dupe my existing drive onto a secondary drive, then install the new drive and then copy the stuff from the external drive back onto the first drive.
I've tried using CarbonCopyCloner before but didn't have a lot of success with it. Is SuperDuper the way to go?
I'm a little nervous about pulling out an HD so I'm grateful for any tips.
Thanks
andrew

its NOT supposed to be hot.
i did a HD change on my cousin's Macbook 2 days ago, from a 60GB to a 120 GB SATA hd (Toshiba 2.5", since that was the hd brand originally in the Macbook itself) and we left it on for 5 hours (his idea,i dont know what he's thinking).During these 5 hours, the drive area remained at the same temperature as the 60GB book im currently using, not any hotter.
Check your connections:did you fix the joints in corectly or i there a frayed cable inside your macbook?
If your cables and connector are fine, i suggest you put back your old 60GB Toshiba HD and check if the drive area is warmer than usual.(if yes, you're in big trouble.)
If no, you 'may' want to try and install a 2nd-hand Toshiba 2.5" 120GB hd into your notebook to check if it gets hotter than usual. Because personally, it shouldnt.

  • Is SSAS the right tool to replace SAS Enterprise Guide?

I am in the process of studying the feasibility of replacing one of our custom built SAS Data Warehouse with Microsoft BI/DW stack.
I have one specific question that I hope someone here who knows both SSAS and SAS Enterprise Guide can tell me. Feature by feature, in what extent can SSAS replace SAS
    Enterprise Guide?
To those who has less knowledge of SAS Enterprise Guide, it is a client app that let power users query against database tables/views and apply various statistical analysis
to the data then output (print/email/save) the result (grid/chart/etc.).
To name a few of these statistical analysis,
    Under Describe, there are Distribution Analysis; One-Way Frequencies; and Table Analysis;
Under ANOVA: t Test; One-way ANOVA; Nonparametric One-way ANOVA; linear Models; Mixed Models.
Under Regression: Linear; Nonlinear; Logistic and Generalized Linear.
Under Multivariate: Correlations; Canonical Correlation; Principal Components; Factor Analysis…
And if SSAS along is not enough, what else are needed?
    Thanks!

    Hi Hommer,
Based on your description, you said that “SAS Enterprise Guide is a client app that let power users query against database tables/views and apply various statistical analysis to the data then output (print/email/save) the result (grid/chart/etc)”. Since
we are not expert about SAS Enterprise Guide, we cannot give you an exact conclusion. However what we can give you is that there are many adventures of SQL Server Analysis.
    High Performance.
During cube processing SSAS will pre-calculate and physically stores aggregations of facts. Therefore, when the query is fired SSAS does not have to calculate the outcome from the underlying details but can take the values directly from the stored aggregations.
    High Security
You can use the security setting to give end-users access to only those parts (slices) of the cube relevant to them.
    Multiple Access/Frontend-tools
End users can use Microsoft Excel as a power full front-end tool on top of the cube. Besides that the same cube can at the same time be used as a data source for SSRS and SharePoint (KPI-) Web Parts.
For analytical applications, performance management, or just about anything with a KPI, Analysis Services is the perfect companion for SQL Server. These are complementary databases that do different things well. Using the right tool for the right job will
make development faster and usability easier.

    Hope this helps.

This is a little late to take action on, but if you are in the US you can file a report with the Better Business Bureau so there is a complaint on-record.  Misrepresentation is a difficult thing to go after.
Apple will not get involved unless this is an authorized reseller, and then it is not likely they will attempt to force a reseller to make good on the sale item.
If they are not an authorized reseller and the service that repaired the iPhone was not an Apple authorized service center there will not be a valid Apple warranty on the iPhone.  Did the distributor give you any warranty information?

  • Ready to Replace Original Mac HD: Advice Needed

    Hi
I've decided to replace the original factory-fitted 250GB Mac HD with a new 1TB drive. For the last few months I've been booting the Mac Pro from my Mac HD Backup drive, cloned from the Mac HD with Super-Duper, and I notice that it does not have the Recovery HD volume on it.
My question is, then, if I just swap out my old Mac HD for a new drive, and clone it off my current (Mac HD Backup) boot drive, will I lose the Recovery HD stuff, irretreivably and for ever? Or is there some way to "recover" the Recovery HD in this process?
Any advice will be most appreciated
    Jim

CCC 3.4+ does clone the Recovery partition.
You use SD! but overdue for replacing the 250GB - system drive I  tend to keep very current.
For about same price $95-100 you can have WD Black 1TB or WD 10K VR 250GB or Samsung 840 SSD
250GB is about right for system - or less. Most users have leaned to keep system with just the OS and apps, all the media files and data and things that take room would go on 1TB WD Black or larger. Mac OS is probably 40GB unless  you have a lot of large apps in which case 100-300GB (rare for 250GB unless X-Plane or large Suites).
When you bought Lion did you keep the installer? or did it go "poof"? You can create a Lion install flash memory card for reuse later. And might want to.

  • Laptop Replacement Question - Would appreciate advice!

    Hi Guys,
After having issues with my new Macbook Pro applecare told me i would be recieving a replacement, and then sent me shipping labels through email.
Now im just wondering what i have to give back to apple, i bought,
15.4" Macbook Pro Unibody 2.93 GHz with 4 Gigs of Ram
    Apple Care
    iLife Preinstalled
Along with that i have my copy of MacOSX, the power adapter, all the instruction books and manuals and the original box
So what out of all this do i have to ship back, i know i can keep apple care and iLife, but will they ship me a brand new laptop in the original box with all the accessories or will i have to keep all my accessories?

    Hi Almeida5,
I take it they're replacing it with one of the current models? Because currently there isn't a 2.93GHz MBP, so did you confirm that you'd be receiving a 3.06GHz MBP?
I'll agree with what everyone else said... you need to contact Apple. Even if you call and ask to speak with someone else, I'm sure they can see the agent's case notes that you're working with on the replacement. Even another person at Apple would be in a better position to answer this question than anyone of us.
With that being said, I had a unit replaced a few years ago. The only thing that they required back was the unit itself. I didn't have to send any of accessories, software, cabling, etc. Now, they certainly preferred I did (in the box) but it wasn't critical.
iLife '09 comes pre-installed in all brand new computers from Apple, so that'll be the same. Did you mean iWork '09?
Regarding Applecare, they don't "just transfer" it over to a new unit. There's an extra process that occurs that you need to agree to regarding the terms. You can get a pro-rated refund for the remainder of the plan or have the remainder of the plan rolled over to the new machine (there'd be a loss of time coverage).
Again... the next best course of action, really the only course of action, is to get on the horn with Apple.

  • I have a new company iPhone 5 I backed up my old phone on the iCloud before it was replaced. The company put software on the phone when I got it but I can't figure out how to get my content back without erasing all the stuff that is new that they put on i

I have a new iPhone 5 with company software from where I work. I backed my old phone before I got this one on iCloud but I cannot figure out to get my stuff onto this phone without erasing the content that was just put on it.

The only way to do so is to start over: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. You won't be able to use the backup of your old phone unless you are setting up a new phone.

  • Cannot replace older version of Apple Software Update

When attemting to update I-Tunes, the Apple Software Update application launches and the installation fails with the above message. What can I do?

+I have tried to uninstall Apple Software update but it said "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable"+
    Thank you kindly.
Download and Install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. Run the utility, find "Apple Software Update" in the list of programs in CleanUp, select the "Apple Software Update" entry, and click "Remove".
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the Apple Software Update folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
Restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly now we've got the old version of ASU scraped away?

  • Advice - Software De-esser

    What are you using?
    Thanks

none. get the right mic and vocalist and you won't have to.
Please repeat that 1000 times, and then if you still have to reach for a de-esser, repeat it 1000 times more.
That being said, I get asked to mix projects from time to time where the vocals sound like a sibilance-fest. I didn't record them, but I sure have to deal with them.
The Waves Rennisance (sorry, I've never been able to spell that dang word) De-esser is very good. The UAD-1 Multipressor has a de-esser preset that works extremely well, equally as good as the Waves... actually, even better. And Antares had those goofy vocal plug-ins from a year or two ago. They all sounded like A**, IMO, but the one called "Sybil" was actually a decent de-esser. That one caught me by surprise.
Here's my advice though, even using a de-esser plug-in can harm the signal. If you must use one, use it very conservatively, and then take the time to go and automate all the S'ss down, 4-6 dB. This sounds much more natural than a plug-in attenuating it.
The EQ with a side chain compressor is a good trick also, and you can really get good results by automating the EQ curve, to follow the frequencies of the Sss, because they don't all land on the exact same frequency.
Still, automation is your friend here. You could always do a gain change in the sample editor on the Sss also, but that takes equally as much time as automating them.

  • How to Replace GUID inside table CRMD_PARTNER

    Hi,
How to replace old user GUID with a New User GUID inside the table CRMD_PARTNER ?? and from where can we get the GUID of a particular partner ??

    Hi Rahul,
The CRMD_PARTNER table stores the partner details that are maintained in a document say shopping cart as example (Header and Line Items).
Now to get all the partners of a the shopping cart use BBP_PD_SC_GETDETAIL function module. This will give all the details + partner details in table form.
Now you can use the FM BBP_PD_SC_UPDATE to change the details. You can delete an existing partner by setting the deletion indicator (DEL_IND I guess) in the partner table. If you wish to add a new partner add the partner id, partner function and guid of header / item (where the partner is required) as P_GUID.
Once the above function (BBP_PD_SC_UPDATE) call is success call the BBP_PD_SC_SAVE to save the changes.
Deleting data from SAP tables is not advisable.
Note: Once partners are assigned to a document and ordered, then you have to delete that partner and assign a new one if at all they need to be changed. Just replacing the partner guid will cause data inconsistency because except the guid all other data will still be that of the old partner. The above steps explain the procedure for the same
    Hope this solves your problem.

  • New T430 hard drive is bad and Lenovo won't supply replacement preloaded software

Placed order for Lenovo T430 with preloaded Microsoft Office 2010, Adobe Elements, and Adobe Lightroom on 1/13/13.  I received the computer in January and have had ongoing problems with it since that time, requiring multiple contacts with tech support.  Overall, I could use the product (minus the thinkpad laster bluetooth mouse I also purchased from Lenovo that would not stay connected to the computer) up until this last week, when it would not start without going into the boot menu, but could not get out of the boot menu.
I called tech support, who thought it was the operating system and sent me recovery discs to reinstall the OS.  I had help from a computer servicing company who checked my computer and found the hard drive is bad.  They have called Lenovo, who are sending the hard drive out to be replaced.  However, Lenovo is refusing to replace the preloaded (by Lenovo) software I purchased from them.
    Case # A05LT3Q
Tech support says that my account where I registered the product would be able to provide the software.  I called customer service about that and spoke with Hason about the problem.  He stated that he would have to start a customer advocate case for me.  He says he does not yet have a case # for me, but will call me before he leaves at 7pm tonight.  I will post that case # when and if I receive it from him.
Am more than frustrated with this case and the problems I am having.

If I remember correctly, the recovery discs should have everything that came with the system. I could be wrong though.

  • Hard disk replacement program

I just received an email from Apple saying that my iMac hard disk needs to be replaced urgently.  I made an appointment with the Genius on coming Sat.  I have some questions about the replacement and seeking the advice with other people who has got similar experience.
    1.  Does Apple replace my old hard disk with a brand new hard disk only?  If so, it gives me very painful exercise to re-install all the softwares.
    2.  Can they clone my old hard disk with the new hard disk to save my lots of hassle?
    3.  In my hard disk, I have a partition for BootCamp with Windows 7 OS.  Do I need to re-install it completely as I believe Apple will not touch other OS?
On one hand, I am very impressive with Apple reliable and responsible service and on the other hand it will interrupt my usage of iMac for sometime.  I am seeking the advice from other experience hands.
    Thanks,
    Ray

    1. I would not consider it for one use only. I update my clones regularly to have a good backup in case I have a problem with my hard drive (I actually have a problem with it right now). I use that as a backup.
    2. Yes, you need either CarbonCopyCloner (CCC) or SuperDuper (SD) to create a bootable clone on another drive. I prefer a bootable clone; however, you could also use Time Machine which is included in the OS (not bootable though) - I choose not to use that and rely on my clones. If your hard drive has a problem, you can boot with your clone and keep working/troubleshooting your hard drive.
    3. Absolutely: FW800 is much faster than USB 2; I try to avoid USB2 as much as I can - too slow. (I have not tried the new USB 3, so that may be faster, but I can't compare something I haven't tried).
    4. Well, on that I hope someone else will answer here - I do not run anything Windows, so I don't know what to say here. Just in case - if you want it only for the Mac, you would format it Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with the GUID Partition scheme. You could also go to Support (at the top of the page) and search for Windows articles; another place to check is your Help section in Utilitites > Disk Utility > search for Windows > I just did that and got a full page of how to format a disk for Windows.

Intel Core i5 2500 with 8G RAM, 1TB SATA hard disk. I have recently installed a Radeon HD6670 graphics card as the original card gave problems. I have also upgraded to a Cooler Master 500W power supply.
Other details of my PC are listed here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02991104&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_u...
Recently, I experienced failure associated with the harddisk, indicating error 301. I managed to recover sufficiently (somehow) by using Microsoft's error checking tool for harddisk and now able to boot up and run. But I know I will have to replace it as it is a matter of time before the harddisk completely dies.
Before I go and buy a replacement harddisk, I hope I could know about the following:
    1. I am not sure which version of SATA is my PC using. Can I just specify that I want a SATA harddisk, and not be concerned about their version of SATA ?
    2. What is the best way to replace the harddisk from the software perspective ? Should I do an image copy from my current harddisk, if so, what is the easiest way to do this ? sorry, I have not done this before so need to ask such basic question. Would it make sense to connect the new harddisk first and then do the image ?
Thank you very much for any help !

    Hi smtan,
A SATA III, 6 GB data transfer rate disk will work.
Your PC model was introduced by HP in 2011. It may have SATA II but a SATA III disk will be backwards compatible. If this is true you will be limited to 3 GB transfer rates.
One other consideration is HDD size. You should probably limit the HDD replacement size to 2 TB. Your PC probably has a legacy BIOS and your HP Recovery discs may not work on a HDD exceeding 2 TB.
You have a couple of choices on moving or installing Win 7 on your new HDD.
You can clone the existing install from the original HDD to the replacement HDD. You will need to use either: free disk imaging software or purchase this software. I have heard good things about Macrium Reflect free and EaseUS free.
You can GOOGLE for other choices.
Install the disk imaging/cloning software on the source HDD. Install the new HDD in your PC.
Run the cloning software and follow instructions on cloning the operating system to the new HDD.
Please see this article for instructions on cloning one HDD to another.
This article may interest you. Consider purchasing an SSD replacement drive. The performance increase is unbelievable. Many SSD manufacturers provide cloning software with the purchase. You also need to buy the desktop kit version. This includes a 3.5 inch adapter for installing the 2.5 inch SSD in the HDD cage.
There is a downside if you go SSD. Your HP recovery discs may not work because the replacement SSD will be less than 1 TB. There are ways around this. Please see this forum post on installing Win 7 without a disc. Let me know if you are interested.

  • Newbie Question - Replace media in templates-How?

I am a FCP editor trying to learn Motion. The templates offer a wonderful introduction to what Motion can do but as I get my feet wet, I am struggling with how to use the replace media option of the software. My workflow involves FCP where I produce a timeline of the clips that I want to use with specific durations.
What do I need to do to isolate these clips in the browser in order to select them for the replace media function? Is my workflow correct?
Understandably, the media available in the browser is the full length digitized clip. My workaround has been to take the transition elements from Motion and apply a key in FCP.
    Any advice would be great!
    Cheers,
    Chris

I'm guessing that you work with FCP Version 6. Unfortunately, I have version 5.1.4. It doesn't have this option.
The only way to control the in and out of a clip in Motion is to adjust the timing of frame in and out, but it isn't very efficient. I did try copying the clips from the timeline....to one bin in FCP but I got lost after that. I'm not sure how to access these subclips from the browser while in Motion.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers,
    Chris
