Replacing my original HD

Hello all,
So my PowerBook's HD has finally failed due to mechanical failure (according to DiskWarrior), and I've decided to go ahead and upgrade my baby as much as I can.
The biggest HD I've found so far is a Western Digital 250GB (54000 RPM), and I'm just wondering if a) there's anything bigger out there that I can use and b) if the consensus is that this is a reliable drive.
While it's open I'm gonna replace the one 512MB RAM chip with a 1GB as well. Any kinds/brands I should avoid?
Oh and I'm in BC, Canada so local stores would be nice (although it's not the end of the world if I have to ship from the US).
Thanks so much for your help!

While it's open I'm gonna replace the one 512MB RAM chip with a 1GB as well. Any kinds/brands I should avoid?
Three brands work reliably in our Powerbooks, and there are others that people have successfully used. Crucial, already mentioned, Kingston (not their value ram line, however), and Samsung.
For Canada, Crucial works from their US site at http://www.crucial.com/international_guides/international.aspx?country=CANADA . You can find the appropriate number from the Crucial site then look for that locally if you don't want to ship from the US.
For Kingston, their Canadian site is at http://www.kingston.com/canada/ . They provide links to Canadian sellers.
For Samsung, you need to buy that from a distributor. From the US, one source, which will ship to Canada, is OWC at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iBooks-PowerBooks/G4-Aluminum/
Since you have a 1.67Ghz machine, when you look for memory make sure you look for the right memory. The next to last 1.67Ghz Powerbook (pre-Oct 2005) uses DDR memory while the last revision (post Oct 2005 with dual layer SD) uses DDR2 memory, which is different.

  • I'm getting my "new iPad" on Friday.  I'm replacing my original iPad (iPad 1).  Since I will not be going to the Apple store to get my iPad, can someone walk me thru what I should do to set up my new iPad on Friday?  I want to transfer my iPad 1 apps etc.

I'm getting my "new" iPad on Friday.  I'm replacing my "original" iPad (1).  Since I preordered and will be receiving my iPad directly I will not be picking it up from the Apple store, so no set up from them.  Can someone walk me thru what I must to do get my new iPad up and running.  I want to transfer my info, apps, etc. to my new iPad but I also want to pass on my old one to a family member who uses the same computer.  How shall I proceed?  Thanks!

If you want everything that's on your current iPad onto the new one, then you can first copy all purchases off the iPad to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. You can then backup your current iPad and restore the new iPad from that backup (a list of what is included in a backup is in this article - it excludes music, videos, synced photos). As the backup doesn't contain the actual apps, just their settings and content, for the restore to work completely you'll need all the relevant apps in your computer's iTunes library - otherwise the restore won't be able to install the apps and therefore their content (which is one reason to do File > Transfer Purchases, if that doesn't copy them over then you can re-download them for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519).
The restore won't copy passwords onto a different device, so you will need to re-enter your email, router, and any website passwords onto the new iPad.
Depending on what you want to remain on the iPad, you can then either leave it as it is or log out of your account on it (tap on it in Settings > Store) and then wipe it via Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Settings.

  • I I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life.  I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata.  Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?

I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life.  I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata.  Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?

I knew I should never get rid of my old G5's.  By the way, there is a browser still supported for the PPC, TenFourFox, if you're not using it already.  Go to the Floodgap website (they author it)  download it for free.  The only thing it doesn't support is the Flash plugin, but the browser works great. Other video types are supported.  It's based on Firefox, and runs most of the plugins and add-ons. It's very fast, and beats all other browsers on the browser compatibility and speed test.  That's now my default on my G5's.  Firefox and Safari are no longer supported.  As far as the OS, both Tiger and Leopard were solid for me.  The reason, as I stated before, was iMovie.  The version in Tiger with iLife was far superior to what Apple changed it to.  They 'dumbed it down' for the masses.  Even the newest iLife 11 on my Mac Pro quad isn't is good, in my opinion.  So Leopard should be fine for you.  It's a much larger browser in terms of sheer megabytes and disk space, but it's fine.  As far as getting an OS disc, I'm seeing Tiger for about $45.00, Leopard for $50 - 60.00 on that famous auction site.  As far as RAM, I have 8GB in my G5 2.3, but you should check Activity Monitor when you are running your apps.  See how much green slice you have left (unused RAM).  You might find you don't need eight.  A Mac Pro will grab more free RAM than a PPC machine will.  I have a hard time maxing out use of my 8 on the PPC.  Not true with the eight on my Mac Pro.  The OS doesn't hesitate to grab and use it.  You might be OK with 6GB on your PPC. More will not make you faster, as long as you still have free RAM available.  As far as backup on your resurrected machine:  look for a firewire enabled backup if can.  Use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and make a clone backup.  Next time your PPC machine wipes out the hard drive, just take your Firewire drive and plug it into another PPC machine, and you can select it as your boot drive. You'll be back and running in five minutes.  You can also take the physical drive out of your enclosure, and put it in your tower to replace the failed drive, and you'll be back to where you were in less than ten minutes, OS and all.  The PowerMac has an 800 port, so you can do the 800 on the machine to an 800 port on your backup. A firewire 800 to 800 cable is only about $8.00.  It runs nice and fast through the 800 port.  I like the OWC Mercury Extreme enclosures.  They use USB, Firewire 800, and eSATA, so all your options are open.

  • DiskWarrior cannot replace the original directory due to Mac OS failure?

    I have a Powermac Dual G5 running 10.4.8. I have a Lacie Firewire 800 RAID attached.
Lacie firmware is up to date and Disk Utility reports no problems with the RAID, either permissions or Repair/Verify disk.
I have run the latest DiskWarrior 3.0.3 on the RAID (both from the boot volume and booted from the 303 rev39 CD) and it detects a formidable list of potential repairs to be done, creation dates on link files etc.
It offers the next step which is to replace the existing directory with the pristine one it has just prepared.
    Every time I press 'Replace' it backs out, reporting;
"The new directory cannot replace the original directory due to a MacOS services failure"
(If I run DW when booted from the RAID, it replaces the normal boot drives directory OK btw)
I do understand there used to be a bug in Mac OS Panther and an older DiskWarrior reporting similar to this but why now with 3.0.3?
    What does it mean?
Google was no help. Maybe should have come here first
    PowerMac G5 2.5 - PB 12" 1.5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   SE30, IIsi

If lots of errors are reported, it is probably a good idea not to replace the directory. Wiring anything to the drives could make things worse. With Disk Warrior run from your boot hard drive, have it create the new directory, but don't try to write it to the disks. You can then use the new directory to copy files from the bad disks to another disk, or DVDs. It should give you a more accurate backup than the old directory, with its errors. Others have reported LaCie RAID systems failing, so get the data while you can. You could then reformat the LaCie with zeroing and see if it generates errors again, maybe running Disk Warrior daily. If your are lucky, the LaCie may be OK then, but I wouldn't trust it.

  • I wonder if it's possible to replace my original processor (Intel 575 2ghz) in my presario CQ60-116?

I wonder if it's possible to replace my original processor (Intel 575 2ghz) in my presario CQ60-116? The reason is that I really struggel with streaming live videos (from viaplay.no) on my 3 years old Compaq Presario CQ60-116EO. I might believe that this could be one of the reasons for stream video (Silverlight) is not ok. The other thing I might think it is is the video card (if any), and if that is too poor. Can anyone please help me here as I really like to keep this pc for a while more. I'm really satisfied with it in all other way for my use. That's why I might spend a bit money on it to revitalize the power on it.

The short answer for the CPU upgrade is:  Absolutely!
A internal video upgrade for the system board model in your notebook is not possible. (See the Notebook Upgrade FAQ for other external options)
Your Celeron 575 is at the bottom end of the list of compatible cpus for your notebook. You are fortunate to have chosen one of the few system boards that has so many processors that are compatible to it. All of the processors in the list are duo core processors. The processor currently installed is a Celeron. The performance difference between your CPU and any of these is like the difference between night and day.
The top of the line are these two.
    Intel® Core™2 Duo processors
    (6-MB L2 cache, 1066-MHz front
    side bus (FSB)):
    T9400 2.53-GHz processor
    T9600 2.8-GHz processor
    Intel Core2 Duo processors
    (3-MB L2 cache, 1066-MHz FSB):
    P8600 2.4-GHz processor
    P8400 2.26-GHz processor
    P7350 2.0-GHz processor
    Intel Core2 Duo processors
    (2-MB L2 cache, 800-MHz FSB):
    T5900 2.2-GHz processor
    T5800 2.0-GHz processor
    Intel Pentium® Dual-Core
    processors
    (1-MB L2 cache, 667-MHz FSB):
    T3400 2.16-GHz processor
    T3200 2.0-GHz processor
My reference source is the Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook PC HP G60 Notebook PC Maintenence and Service guide. Each of the processors listed has BIOS support.
Upgrading the processor involves an almost complete disassembly and reassembly of your notebook. That is best left to experienced individuals.
    Happy upgrading!

  • If I post a photo on Photostream, then edit it in iPhoto, will the edited version replace the original?

I am working with RAW photos. If iPhoto uploads immediately to Photostream after adding pics and then I edit the photo, will the edited version replace the original on Photostream?

    Yes.
If you want to do this to squeeze more songs onto a device then take advantage of the feature to downsample as songs are transferred. Device > Summary tab > Convert higher bitrate songs to to 128kbps AAC

  • When someone other than myself downloads an image from my web album, a dynamically generated file name replaces the original file name.  How I can prevent the original file name being replaced during the downloading process?

When someone other than myself downloads an image from my web album, a dynamically generated file name replaces the original file name.  How I can prevent the file name being changed during this downloading process?

    Hi Glenyse,
    Here are my steps.
    1.  I upload multiple image (jpg) files onto my photo album.
    2.  I select the "sharing" by email option for this album.
    3.  I enter the recipient's email address.
    4.  The recipient receives my message and clicks on the link.
    5.  The recipient accesses my photo album and clicks on one of the images.
    6.  The image opens up to its own screen.
    7.  The recipient selects the "download" and then save file option.
Here is the part I do not understand.  For some reason, during this "download" process, the original name which I have given to the file is replaced by different name.  So I was hoping that someone knows how to prevent the file name from being changed during the "download and save" process.
Much appreciated if you can help me find a solution to this problem.

  • Can I replace my original Apple ID with a different one?

I just retired from teaching. My original Apple ID is my school email address. Now that I'm retired I'd like to use my personal email account as my ID. If I replace the original ID with the new one, will  I have access to everything that was associated with my original ID?  Thank you in advance for the help.

Change AppleID - https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/  then > Manage Your Account
To continue to change it for iTunes:
Select the iTunes store in iTunes.
Click the account name at top right, sign out then sign back in.

Yes, changing an ID will still give you access to previous purchases, making a new account with new ID will not.

  • HT2309 my iphone 5 will not activate with my replacement sim (original damaged)

Hi All, Have a problem with my grandsons iphone 5 on tesconet. His original sim stopped working and I requested a replacement sim from Tesco, who sent it to me saying it was ready for use with the same number. When I put this into the phone it says it needs to activate and that the sim is not of the correct provider, even though the phone is apple unlocked. I have tried a couple of other tmobile sims in the phone and they work ok, and the original tesco one worked ok for 3 months. I have tried reloading the software and just about everything else on line, also I tried the new sim in another mobile and that works ok, it doesn't even ask to activate, just works straight away, any ideas?

so i'm kind of new to premiere and i was wondering how you would replace the audio of an original clip with a different audio track?

Alt drag audio into audio on timeline.
Must be of the same length or have an inpoint otherwise it will be out of sync.
Save way is to put the different audio on a track below the original and mute the original.

  • Replacing damaged original drive with new one.

Hopefully I've chosen the correct boad...  Our Pavillion dv6-2173cl hangs after showing the: wallpaper with the Taskbar fame and the Start button, Hp logo button and Date/Time. The cursor shows with the blue'busy' ring for several minutes then the whole thing 'freezes' necessitating the use of the power button on the case to shutdown.  This also happens in Safe Mode.  Hp Daignostics returned an error code of 9077j2-50e656-xd0021(7? sorry wrote it in a bit of a hurry, lol)-6ou103 for the drive test.  We can still get to the disk as a 'slaved' external drive so personal info, settings are available.  Since replacement drive is practically a given, I was wondering about just making the new disk a 'plain' W7disc.  So my questin is "Are the HP programs necessary? Or are they just 'Space Takers"?  I suspect an Overheating problem as the original drivr case has heat discoloration... Probable cause of disk damage... Right?  All we need is a working drive till finances allow purchasing a new computer. Probably Feb. or so.

That has always worked, I have never had it fail.
The only thing that I can suggest is to make sure that the key is correct.
The entire drive has to be deleted to create unallocated space on the entire drive. Just formatting it is not enough. After you create unallocated space let the Windows disc format it automatically, don't do it yourself.
Here is a tutorial that describes what I am talking about.

A place to download the ISO of most version of W7, if you need it.

  • Looking to replace the original 6 Gig HD

    Hi everyone
Jim tells me that there are a few folks out here, who may be provide a some tips in replacing the old original 6 gig HD.
I was warned to that a very large capacity HD wouldn't be conducive to an OS 9.1 format. So I'll need to get something not too large.
I also want to make certain that a 7200 RPM, ATA-type HD would work ok?
I know from experience that when I bought a new 2nd internal drive for my G5, that most of the drives I was shopping for were all pre-formatted for 'WINDOWS', so I had to utilize OS 10.4's erase and format ultility which worked fine.
Can you guys provide a tip here in regard to OS 9.1?
    Thanx all
    Mike

    Hi Mac Man (Jim)
    Hi Don
    Jim was right
It's very nice to see how some folks still love their old G3's, and how helpful eveyone is
    Ok Don looks like:
(B&W G3) Rev. 1 and Rev. 2 logic boards are similar. To differentiate, check the number printed on the CMD chip at location U1. The CMD chip on Rev. 1 logic boards is PCI646U2 and on Rev. 2 logic boards is 646U2-402.
With this I should get started - although on 2nd thought, I really wasn't gonna get anything bigger than about a 40-60 Gig anyway.
And yes this new drive will be the main HD (I already have a 2nd 20 Gig drive)
With a bigger main HD drive capacity, and some additional RAM, I was hoping to pep up the performance a bit....
Ok - I'll look for an ATA-type 7200 RPM 40-60 Gig HD (perhaps from New Egg)?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144173
And then - here's my plan - but don't know if it's correct:
Put the Apple OS 9.1 disc in the CD ROM (it's the full retail boot disc)
Boot down, take the old 6 gig HD drive out, and replace it with a new 60 Gig HD
Boot back up by pressing the power button, and holding down the C key for a format from the OS 9.1 disc in the CD ROM?
Look for any prompts to get me into the Drive Set Up Utility?
(or perhaps this will automatically come up when I initially boot up)?
    Thanx so much Don
