Replacing noisy fan in MDD Mac

Hi all,
I've read the MDD models were called the wind tunnel machines due to the noisy fan. Has anyone replaced the fan in a MDD to make much quieter? My MDD has been shutting down without warning at times and I was wondering if it can be a fan issue. Thanks, web dude

Hi-
Has anyone replaced the fan in a MDD to make much quieter?
A very common mod. Google will yield many reports like this one below:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/g4mirrored_drive_doors/noise_reduction/g4_ddr_noisereduction.html
My MDD has been shutting down without warning at times and I was wondering if it can be a fan issue.
Usually due to overheating of the processors.
Applying new thermal compound to the processor heatsink is a good idea.
Running CHUD tools to allow nap mode is also important for the MDD to run cooler.

HOw much does it cost to have the fan in 15 inch mac book pro replaced

The last time I had my fans replaced (2011) the cost of each fan was $17. Labor was about $34 for a total cost of $68. But I had both fans replaced. This was on a 2006 MacBook Pro so your prices may be different.

  • Mac 8500 Noisy Fan

The fan in my Mac 8500 is getting progressively noisier. A rattly type sound.
    Can it be replaced?
The fan appears to be an integral part of the power supply as near as I can tell. Is the fan a separate item or does the entire power supply need to be replaced?
Where could I find replacement parts?
    Thank you.

If you "run the numbers" off the label for the original part, you will often find the specs online. Exact replacements are often available -- in the handy 10,000-pack.
If you want somewhat fewer than 10,000 parts, I suggest you take the specs for airflow and noise generated in hand and look at this site, because it has good variety and can help you converge on exactly what you want -- whether you buy their offerings or go on to search elsewhere:

Note: fans with an additional yellow wire are compatible with fans that use only red and black. The yellow wire is an RPM Output from the fan. The Mac does not use it, and it can be safely ignored.

  • Noisy fans on iMac after Apple replaced hard drive

My hard drive was replaced by an Apple contractor last week. Immediately after the replacement the fans started running hard while working and would wake itself from sleep mode to run. I watched the Activity monitor as someone suggested, there are no "runaways." I zapped PRAM, and SMC multiple times. No change. Finally tonight I ran the hardware test and got the error message 4SNS/1/40000000:TH00-9.000. I then went to the support community and found that this relates to the hard drive and circuitry for fan sensors. It did not do this before. I will call the person at Apple that was my contact for the replacement on Monday. Just trying to verify that I have interpreted error message correctly.

Apple has basically replaced my entire computer: 2nd new hd, new fan in the right side (ODD I believe), new logic board and CPU and it's still noisy and will not respond to the Energy Saver sleep preferences. I downloaded smcFanControl software and that indicates that ODD temp is 106F and 3415 rpm with nothing happening in the drive. I decided to work drive and imported a bunch of photos to iPhoto. ODD got a little warmer but fan speed never changed. What now? How do I get to a high level Apple repair rep. I am so annoyed by this whole thing. I should have left the hard drive alone until it died and not responded to the recall.

  • Late 2006 Macbook fan noise - How much does it cost to replace a noisy fan?

    Hi there,
I have a late 2006 Macbook that has served me well over the last four years or so. Unfortunately, the fan is now making one heck of a racket (almost as soon as you switch the machine on).
I gather this is a relatively common problem with this generation of Macbook and can be fixed by replacing the fan. I'm not proficient enough to do this myself so will likley have to take it to an Apple Store to get it done. I wondered whether anyone else had already done this and if so how much it cost them and how long it took? Any info / tips warmly welcomed.
    Thanks,
    James

I suggest you do a search for MacBook repairs. There are many shops that will do it cheaper than Apple. Most can give a quote on a known repair online.

  • Noisy Fans

I have owned my dual G4 since 2002, and its still going strong!!. I want to replace the noisy fans, so I did abit a research and came across an apple web page about apple replacing the fans for $20. The problem I have is that the offer ran out in 2003 anybody got a idea of where I can pick up some fans cheap.

Hi there! Welcome to the forums!
I am glad to hear that your machine is going strong!!! Mine is also.. the MDD's just won't die without a fight given the intel macs of today. However, back to the topic.
What kind of power supply do you have in your MDD? First off, if its the 400 watt power supply, I would suggest trying to find the 360 watt power supplies. Those are the much quieter ones that Apple sent to customers back in 2003 to relieve the noisy ones - also the pabst fan was a replacement as well.
Once you do this.. get then a PCI slot fan to help in cooling the machine down. Next step is to mount(like I did) a 120MM power fan on top of the optical drive roof and have it blow the air out towards the back - this will aid in cooling down your system DRAMATICALLY. My pabst fan is close to silent now, though I can hear it sometimes, but I also have the power to control the fan's speed as well. Sometimes to get rid of dust and foreign particles which could hurt my system, I rev the fans for awhile in HURRICANE mode. I guarentee that your MDD will love the fans. Oh, one more thing.. Put a small 60MM fan underneath the front drive bay. + GET THE COPPER HEATSINK - this will further aid in cooling the system down.
Right now my dualcpu temp is: 90 degrees fahrenheit.

  • G5 Dual 2.7Ghz Constant Noisy Fans

    Hi there,
I'm really annoyed with this whole situation since Apple don't appear to have publicly acknowledged the noisy fans/chirping noise problems G5 users (with varying spec hardware) have been experiencing and posting about for over a year.
    Anyway, here's the deal:-
My main spec is as follows: G5 Dual 2.7Ghz/4.5GB RAM/Mac OS X 10.4.6 installed on the shipped Western Digital 250GB SATA, 2nd internal 250GB SATA (Maxtor DiamondMax), 20" aluminium Apple Studio Display.
Since I performed the upgrade to 10.4.4 back in early May 2006 the fans have been constantly on as soon as the login window appears and remain at full pelt all the while the machine is on - clearly unacceptable and unusable. Fortunately for me it's not my only Mac although this is besides the point as I have now had an unusable machine for over a month and not been able to do any work with it - it is a production machine used for making music with Logic.
The bottom line is that I've not been able to make any music!
None of the suggested resolution methods that have been written about in the forums or elsewhere on the 'net (eg. installing CHUD tools etc) have made a blind bit of difference.
Furthermore, I have always had the chirping sounds since I purchased the machine in person from the Apple Store in July 2005.
For the past few weeks I was convinced that the fan problems were caused by the 10.4.4 update (when it started) and that the subsequent 10.4.6 update hadn't cured the problem.
Prior to this, I hadn't run a software update since December 2005 purely because I had heard horror stories from friends and other G5 users posting to forums etc. - if it ain't broke, don't fix it right?
I haven't really had the time to devote to trying to sort the problem out but I decided earlier today that tonight was the night to have a look at it.
Having spent all evening trying various things I am now convinced it is a hardware problem as opposed to being software related.
Here's what I tried earlier with the machine spec as above:-
    1. Booted the G5 with Disk Warrior 3.0.3 boot CD
    2. Ran all Disk Warrior tasks on both drives - eg, 0% fragmentation
    3. Re-booted, fan noise still there from login window
    4. Manually ran daily, weekly and monthly CRON jobs from Terminal - OK
    5. Ran Disk Utility on main HD, repaired permissions - OK
    6. Ran Disk Utility on secondary HD, verified disk - OK
    7. Powered down
    8. Removed all leads incl. power, monitor, all USB and Firewire
    9. Removed 4GB RAM leaving 500MB stock RAM, reset the PMU
10.Ensured the removable fans (covering the RAM) were re-seated firmly
11.Replaced plastic 'door', attached monitor (DVI only) and keyboard USB
12.Re-booted, same problem, fan noise still there from login window
13.Attached Firewire HD with Mac OS X 10.3.8 installed
14.Selected Firewire HD in the Startup Disk system pref
15.Rebooted into Panther, same problem, fan noise still there from login window
    AAAAAARRRRGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
The last time I booted my G5 from the Panther Firewire HD (which incidentally hasn't been used since) was prior to me doing the 10.4.4 update on my G5's main boot drive and there was NO fan noise whatsoever!!!!!
Clearly I need to call and speak to someone at Apple tomorrow as the G5 is nearly one year old and I need to get this problem sorted out before it's out of warranty.
It just seems an odd coincidence that the problem started when it did!
Anyway, if any Apple techs or other G5 owners with a similar setup (specifically the dual 2.7) are reading this I'd appreciate a response or some advice for other things to try.
I'm just really frustrated and a little annoyed that having been a very content Mac user for years this is the first and only time I've ever had a problem with a piece of Apple kit.
Like I said at the top of the post, I can't believe the lack of acknowledgement on Apple's part as it would appear to be a known/common issue.
    Just my £0.02.
    Thanks for reading/listening.

Ok, take a look on your plastic shield, one of the bottom "tabs" should have a shiny metal coating of some sort, if it's gone or moved, then this could be the reason your fans are going "turbo".
If your fans are just at a high speed all the time, consider lowering your room temps to about 75ºF and see how it goes after a few hours/days.
It's most likely a wise decision to have the G-folks take a look at it anyway before it gets out of warranty. you might need a fan calibration or firmware change.
You still have a chance to buy AppleCare and get it registered before the 1 year warranty expires.
The Dual 2.7 is the hottest PM of the bunch, overclocked I would think.
You said the WD drive was OEM correct? Came with the PM stock?
Because the newer WD drives now have a new SATA spec that requires a SATA PCI card to function correctly in PM's.
Have you tried a complete reinstall of the OS?
Did you upgrade Tiger over Panther? (not good, less secure, previous exploits)
Do a backup, a clone of your boot drive to a external using Carbon Copy Cloner (check in the forums for their advice!) would be better.
the c boot off of Tiger install disk (not upgrade version) and from the installer menu Disk utility Erase w/Zero the boot drive (takes longer but writes are more reliable) and then reinstall Tiger, software update till clear, reinstall iLife '06 and all apps from fresh sources, avoid Migration Assistant (too blind, no app DRM copies) install files and see if your fan problems return.
Sometimes if Mac OS X is not operating correctly it won't tell the hardware to turn the fans down.
Don't install any OS/root level/admin password type programs or hacks until you've had a chance to clone that pristine puppy to a external drive (preferably 2) and keep it disconnected for safekeeping.
It's takes practically no time to option boot off a clone to recover, repair or reverse clone to the original drive. If your exploited, first c boot and Zero the infected drive before hooking up and option booting off the clone of course.

  • Why would they just replace the fans when it needs a new logic board?

Went to see a "genius" at the Apple store with my Week 12 MBP. Complained about excessive heat and it whining when unplugged, ever since I got it. He sent it off, three days later I got it back in the mail. But when I looked at the repair doc all it says is they replaced the "FAN ASSY, LT, M1" and also the "RT" one. So now I have two new fans (which worked fine before), and that's it. It still get hot enough over the F keys to burn my skin, and it still whines like a baby when unplugged.
All they have to do is look at the serial number (8612) to know it needs a new MLB, right? What do I do now, call them back and go through this all over again?
    MacBook Pro 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Went through the exact same thing with my week 17 MBP. The first repair came back with new power inverter and fan assemblies even though my noise was clearly coming from below the keyboard. The noise continued and if anything was actually worse so I was starting to regret ever sending the computer back in the first place. So I called again and sent it back in. This time, the laptop came back untouched and declared "within spec". Now I was really fired up. I told them I would use it for a week and if the problem continued it will come back. So back it went a third time and this time the logic board was replaced. I have to say, the difference is very noticeable and completely worth it in hindsight. I was almost ready to live with it and am so glad I did not. Be persistent and let them know you are prepared to send it in as many times as it takes.

  • How do I fix a faulty I/O fan on my Mac Pro (2008)?

My I/O: USB, Firewire  quit working reliably.  Took it to the Apple Store.  They informed me that the I/O fan was faulty.  I assume this led to high temperature in the I/O section.  They said that replacing the fan would probably fix the prob, but that my Mac Pro is now a legacy machine so they do not have access to parts to fix it.  I am looking for either a source of I/O fans and instructions how to replace or a suggestion where to get this done.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi.  The manuals and the software look very useful.  Thank you.  I can clearly see what the fans look like.  As I indicated to Grant Bennet-Alder, I was told by a fellow in the Apple Store after looking at my machine on a test bench that there was a problem with the I/O fan, but apparently this is not how the fans are labelled.  Hence, I do not know which of the fans is problematic.
A1186 is the Early 2008 Mac Pro. Page 181 in the manual shows the various fans and their part numbers. With the side cover off, you should be able to easily see all but the power supply fan either working or not. With a good flashlight shining in the front of the Mac, the PS fan should be visible if you've only got one optical drive and you should feel a breeze out the back at the top if it's running. Or, pull out the optical drive carrier and the fan should be visible.

  • Noisy fans on all the time

I have come over from the dark side today (PC to Mac switcher). I got a second hand Mac Pro 2.66 quad with four HDD and 4GB ram and i seem to have very noisy fans. I did find this article
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/intel/fan/
which mentions that extra drives cause more noise due to extra heat and less airflow but this is just silly, they sound like they are on full ALL the time.
I have alread tried resetting the smc_rst button on the logic board but that did nothing. I also tried restarting the machine with command, option, p, and r down before the grey screen on startup and that did nothing.
Is this normal. is it just down to lots of HDDs/RAM or should i be worried?

Mac Pro most likely for "MP" shorthand.
Considering how the drives are placed, can't see that they block air, though they may not get direct ventilation.
FBDIMM memory needs to be kept cool and the top memory Riser and higher density DIMMs do tend to be as much as 10C higher (with 2GB DIMMs running the hotest).
I wonder if you got it with a system already installed? or did a full 'wipe' of the system drive and started fresh. There is a little program most people now use smcFanControl which can force the fans to run at a minimum rpm (though not the PSU fan, either software defect, or the logicboard won't allow forcing it if the sensor doesn't register a higher temp).
SFC would put a little menu item on the menu bar and to acces the program preferences. There would also be a log-in] in user accounts, and a startupitems in the top level Library/Startupitems usually.
Also, look on the Dock for items that can be controlled from there to "open at login" or disabled without having to open any control panels.
If it was me, and I bought a used system, other than direct from Apple Store (Specials, great deals on refurd equip.) I would start over with installing the system.

  • Trouble running hardware test on 07 iMac with noisy fan

    Hello
I have an 07 iMac with a noisy fan- I've tried vacuuming out dust from the back but want to avoid taking it apart if possible...
I read online I should run the hardware test, but since I am running Mavericks the Apple support advice is to run the original OS X install disc and restart (holding down D or Option+D)...
Long story short I got a replacement disc from Apple (I'd lost the original) but the iMac ejects it when I restart following the process above... could it be my bluetooth keyboard? Hopefully not since I no longer have the original hardwired one... or does anyone have any other ideas for either how to get to the hardware test... or fix the fan (without a third party app just stopping it)
    Thanks!

Try holding down the Option key to get the one time boot manager screen then select the AHT. Not sure as Apple moved it around on different install discs but it might be on the Applications discs and not the OS X discs.

  • Has a noisy fan

What has caused my iMac to develop a noisy fan. It runs at full speed now, this has just started.

this sounds like its overheating. when it does this can you tell what graphics processor is in operation, you can do that by either using gfxCardStatus (a app that sits in the menu bar that tells you which gpu is in operation) or by going into the more info section of About This Mac and under display it should say which processor is in use at that time, either the AMD discrete GPU or the Intel Integrated one

  • T60p Noisy Fan

I have seen several messages related to the T60p fans becoming noisy and failing.  I'm now having the same problem.  My fan has started making a lot of noise and I'm affraid it is going to die on me very soon.  With this in mind I have a few questions I hope someone can help me with.
    1.  Why are fans dying so fast and what is Lenovo doing about replacing them?
    2.  Since it seems my system is no longer under warranty, what would be the replace process and cost to have it replaced by Lenovo?
    3.  What is the part number of the replacement part and instructions for replacing it myself?

  • G5 noisy fan, red light

i've taken my computer MANY times to the apple store, they run a service diagnostic test & tell me nothing's wrong (naturally the computer doesn't "act up" when it's there)
the fans rev really high and a red light lights up inside the front panel just above the power button
when i run the hardware test i get the error 2FAN/4/8:DRIVE BAY
apple has replaced the fan kit 2 times, and optical drive (wasn't burning dvds)
    any suggestions?

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
    Well - you don't say which G5 you have - there's a list here
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/
    Assuming it's not a "Late 2005" dual-core G5
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G5_Late2005.html
which has several LEDs on the main logic board - explained here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302527
you could try a test: when the G5 is running normally - i.e. no roaring fan and LED - take off the aluminium side panel (should not affect the fans) and then pull the clear plastic deflector panel outwards from the top with the handle, and then tilt it forwards so that rear-most locating peg on the bottom edge of the deflector panel just clears the slot in which it normally sits.
If you then get exactly the symptoms which are the problem - red LED on the front (left as you look at from the side) edge of the main logic board (just behind the power switch and front external sockets), and the roaring fan (it's actually just the Drive Bay fan that goes into hyperdrive - as a warning) - then it's possible the silver/white tab on the rear-most locating peg of the clear plastic deflector panel is damaged or defective. Some diagrams here
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/073-0891.pdf
If the label is damaged you can substitute a piece of shiny gift wrapping tape, as explained here
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2658261&#2658261
which also mentions using a torch/flashlight to check whether the sensor inside the slot itself is ok; more detail, plus cleaning the sensor with a can of compressed air, here
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2996565#2996565
Please post again if you have any questions - or if this isn't the solution. Good Luck.
