Replacing old TC with new larger capacity TC and using old TC as an external HDD

I currently have a 500GB 1st gen TC.  I am running out of space for back ups and running out of room on my iMAC HDD.  I would like to purchase a nw 2TB TC to back up both my iMAC, macbook, and expected Macair when the new ones are released.
Questions:
1. Can I use the old TC as an external HDD only?  I would like to place my iTunes Library and photos on it so it is visilble accross the network via wi-fi.
3.  If I move my libraries is there a method to make them available to me when I travel via the internet?  Or is this the upcoming cloud sharing I've heard so much about?
2. My understanding from vaious discussions is that I can not connect the old TC (via the TC USB port) directly to the the new TC and have the old one continuously backed up to the new one (iMAC---new TC usb---old TC).  In other words, if I were to move my itunes and photo media to the 500GB old TC then they would not be backed up.  However, what if I conencted the old TC directly to the iMAC?
old TC----iMAC---new TC
Would it back-up to the new TC now?  Can I connect it to the iMAC ethernet port or would i have to use the USB connection?
3.  Can I daisy chain them together in a way that the new TC will backup both the iMAC and the old TC?
iMAC---old TC----new TC

You can connect a USB drive to the TC, and back up some or all of your Macs to it instead of the TC's internal HD.  See #Q2 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
And you can put other data there, too, such as your iTunes library, but for best results you'll want to partition the disk. Otherwise, Time Machine will, eventually, use up all the empty space.
Also note that Time Machine cannot back up from any network drive, so you'll need to find an alternative way to back up that "other" data.  The Chronosync app might be viable.

  • What do I need to do to replace my 80 gig HDD with a larger capacity HDD?

I have an older Mac mini, running OSX 10.6.8 @ 1.83 GHz w/2 GB ram.   It is used primarily for email, iPhone photo storage, and online banking. Works, but now I am out of memory. rather than buy a new unit, I'd prefer to replact the 80 GB HDD with a larger capacity drive. What do you recommend?

No such thing as a "PC hard drive".      Im sure it comes formatted in MSDOS or otherwise, ...doesnt mean anything.
Ive got a 100 drives laying around here, most came formatted in DOS or Exfat or NTFS , just formatted all of them for Mac.
format the HD as Mac OSX extended journaled ,....takes 5 seconds.
    CLONING:
    1. grab carbon copy cloner or superDuper CLONE app.
2 attach target clone drive via USB in an enclosure or HD dock. Firstly format the target (external new) HD or SSD in disk utility in “Mac OS extended journaled”
    3. clone internal HD to target HD or SSD (external) [takes about 40 mins depending on size]
    4. Boot ONCE from external (go to sys. preference to boot from external) to TEST the new Clone
    5. open bottom (see videos on ifixit or youtube on same) and remove old, install new.

(FIRST TIME after installing,  boot will be SLOW,...normal and ignore that).
    Clone APPS
Superduper does not clone the recovery partition, but that is NOT necessary if you keep the original HD as a “backup clone”. Most don’t bother with the recovery partition in a clone, however that is your prerogative.

My 80 gb drive has about 1 gb available,
Sounds like an old drive there.......  nice Hitachi or Toshiba 1TB external drive is average $70

  • Old files with a large number of comments no longer work properly in either Adobe Acrobat DC or or Acrobat Reader

I made a series of interactive ebooks wiith Adobe Acrobat Pro. They worked fine in the old Adobe Reader. But now the commenting feature does not work properly either in Adobe Reader DC or Adobe Acrobat DC.  When I open the comments, everything slows down or else I get blank pages. The tools are not usable. There seems to be some compatibility issue between what was done in these books with the commenting tools and the new applications. Has anybody experienced the same?

    Hi Anubha,
Thanks for your reply. With the new Acrobat Reader DC, I have the same problem on two computers, one with Windows 7 and one with Windows 8.1. I downloaded a trial version of Adobe Acrobat DC on the computer with 8,1. Then I found out that I had the same problem with Acrobat DC as I did with Reader DC.
I made these e-books with Acrobat Adobe Pro 11. I never had a problem with Pro 11 or with previous Readers. Also I have sent these e-books out to other people who had Reader 11 and they had no problems. Now it seems that the books are not usable – at least in the fullest way -- for me or for anyone else using the latest version of Reader.
Any help would be appreciated. I have put a lot of work into these e-books.

    Hi,
For custom forms and reports, you need to open it using Forms/Reports Builder 10g, compile it, and upload it again to the server.
For the CUSTOM_TOPs, make sure it is set in the custom<CONTEXT_NAME>.sh file under $APPL_TOP, and in default.env file on the Applications tier.

G62-234DX  Hard drive dead.  I replaced hard drive with new Samsung 250 GB. SATA II hard drive and used the recovery Windows 7 Home edition DVD.  Error message appeared after windows loads files and starts windows from the recovery DVD.  An error dialog box opens after completing and indicates, This computer is not supported by the recovery discs.  You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these discs.  error: 0100-1425 -3627-3628-3623-3624.   Hit OK and system powers down.

    Hi:
If you purchased the recovery disks from HP, please see if making and running this first helps.

  • I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

It is not necessary to delete your old wireless networks first, but doing so may eliminate confusion. If you wish to do that, open System Preferences > Network, and select Wi-Fi from the left column. Click the Advanced... button, then select your old wireless networks and delete them with the "–" (minus) button. Make sure the "Remember networks this computer has joined" remains checked.
    OK then Apply.
This prevents your Mac from searching for your previous network which will no longer exist.
A new Express creates an open wireless network that you must select before you can configure it. It appears in your Wi-Fi menu like this:
Select it. AirPort Utility will load and walk you through its configuration.
Edit: If you are really using OS X 10.5.1 as shown in your profile, the above screenshot is not applicable. Instead, select the network called "Apple network nnnnnn" and then launch AirPort Utility.

You need to empty the trash to get the space back.

Before installing a new drive - it is generally better to install it in a external usb enclosure and connect it to your Macbook so you can format/erase the new drive and make an exact clone of the drive you wish to install, unless you plan on doing a clean install.

    Easyebe,
Are you using a Mac machine or Windows PC?
If using a Mac machine, go to Application-->Utilities-->Adobe Installer-->old apps names and run the uninstaller for old apps.
If you are using Windows PC, go to Control panel-->>Program and Features and uninstall the old apps.
It will uninstall everything related to old apps, but your setting must be imporated to new version of apps.

  • I have an iPad 2 and used old Apple ID for iBook app; now it wants to upgrade but I have a new Apple ID, how can I make certain I don't lose any data in my iBooks?

I have an iPad 2 and used old Apple ID for iBook app; now it wants to upgrade iBook but it is "stuck" on my old ID, yet I already created a new ID but it won't let me update the App.  I have everything backed up on my MacBook so if I delete iBooks on my iPad and retrieve the App under my new ID and then sync with my MacBook, will I still have all of the books, etc.?

Your purchases are tied to your Apple ID. If you bought all of the books with the old ID then AFAIK you will have to continue to use that ID in order to continue to sync those books to the iPad.
You have to update the app with the old ID so I don't see how you could keep the books with the new ID. Maybe I am wrong about this, but someone else will chime in I'm sure and correct me if I am wrong.

  • I just installed a larger hard drive, and used my Time Machine Backup to transfer my info back to the new hard drive. When I open Iphoto, my thumnails are there, but they aren't linked back to the actual photos.I see the photos in my HD. What should I do

I just installed a larger hard drive, and used my Time Machine Backup to transfer my files back to the new hard drive. When I open Iphoto, my thumbnails are there, but they aren't linked back to the actual photos. I see the original photo files in my HD. Is there a way to link the Iphoto thumbnails back to the original files?

Use the Firewire cable and t boot the old Mac's hard drive to the new Mac's desktop and transfer your entire iPhoto folder.
Use Disk Utiliy to erase'format HFS+ Journaled your TimeMachine drive and use the free Carbon Copy Cloner and clone your new boot drive to the external, it's hold option bootable.

Mountain Lion has created new user log-ins and moved old Users to a separate folder.
The new users are set-up as "standard" and the old ones were "Administrators"
All files are missing, i.e. no desktop files etc. But they are located in a folder called "Users 1" which is a new folder.
    Can anyone help?

Here is perhaps the solution :
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1191262
    follow the "Ratatapa's" instructions.
1/ boot on Recovery part (command R)
2/ find "terminal" in disk utilities
and write "resetpassword" for root. Enter a new password for the root user.
3/ reboot as root user (or when your are login, log out and typing to open a other user "root")
in the "system pref" panel, open "users and groups" and then create new user with the same name, same password.. normally it must be asking you about "You are already an account with the same name" say yes. And it's done.
4/ Log out. re-log as the normal user. desactivated the root user.
