Replacing PowerBook Titanium 15" display

I've recently started trying to repair several PowerBook Titanium 15" Mercury and Onyx models with various problems, including the notorious broken hinge problem that requires replacing the display. As various posts here have noted, the video display wires are very delicate and easily damaged, especially when trying to slip the connector out through the opening in the case where the hinge attaches.
I was so nervous about this that I decided to try spreading a thin layer of silicone rubber adhesive over these wires where they spread apart to attach to the connector. My idea was to provide a little more protection than the Kevlar insulation, a little additional insulation around and between wires, and a little additional mechanical strength without making them much more difficult to fit through the opening. I thought of silicone rubber adhesive because it dries quickly, is flexible, and can withstand high temperatures.
I've tried this on two displays now without creating any difficulties for myself. I can't be sure the thin adhesive coating really helps, but at least it makes me feel better when I'm threading the connector through the opening.
As other posts have suggested, the iFixIt repair guides are a big help in replacing displays, and I've also found the RadTech Glide hinge adjustment kit mentioned here from time to time an excellent investment.

Sounds like it could be the LCD cable as you suggest. Might be good to take it to an Apple centre and see what they think, good luck.
Hopefully this is helpful or solved your problem. Consider rewarding some points!

  • Powerbook G4 12 " display is low res and faint

    Dear Gurus of such things,
My Powerbook G4 12" display goes into some kind of low res and faint display after restarting. After days of this, it will suddenly become high res and clear again, for no reason that I can tell. It also recovers after my Powerbook has been connected to a projector.
Is there some way to fix this poor display after restarting without connecting it to a projector?
    Thanks Scotianova

Why not ask Applecare to replace the whole laptop ?
by the way,is your MBP a Core or Core 2 Duo?
I am currently using a Core 2 Duo MBP, it's working well(except for a defective battery )but i am happy with it.

  • Replace inverter or whole display, or both?

Right hinge was beginning to show sparks and smoke so I shut er down promptly and took out the battery. Curiosity got best of me though a few weeks later so I rebooted to see what would happen. Everything was beautiful, for about 3 seconds, when sizzling and sparks and more smoke all came out of the right hinge. The display went black and I shut it down.
I've taken apart the tibook and indeed, the BL cable on right side has missing insulation and it must have shorted.
So now, how do I figure out if I need to replace the display or the inverter board or both? Would the inverter board have been damaged in the short? Or just the display? How would I check the inverter board?
Thanks for any advice you may have.

Hi, Chip. You or any Apple technician would check the inverter board by replacing it with a known-good one and seeing whether all your problems went away.
A much bigger problem for you is that the cable that shorted out inside the hinge can't be replaced without dismantling the display assembly, which is epoxied together all the way around, i.e., not designed to be disassembled. It can be done, but it's a miserable, time-consuming and risky job. (instructions here). If you are able to re-insulate your cable somehow, perhaps you can go on using it and at least test to see whether that and a new inverter are enough to get the Powerbook working again. If you still have no backlight after those repairs, you'll have to replace the display assembly, which includes the LCD panel, backlight, sleep light and magnet, half the latch assembly, and the three cables and hinges. There's no way that would be financially justified on an old Mercury Tibook.

  • Best battery for Powerbook Titanium?

    Hi,
I just bought a Powerbook Titanium 1 Ghz from a friend and want to replace the battery. The battery gives me about 1 hour of life and runs dry even when it is off. I've seen 3rd party batteries for about $90. Can anyone point me in the right direction on my first step to improving this classic?
    Thanks.

Does anyone know anything about these batteries? I see them sold from various resellers and on ebay, I think they are far east manufactured and are much cheaper than the newtech batteries.........
The question is, are they any good?

I have two batteries which are down to about a quarter capacity and don't really want to spend another £100 before Christmas on a new battery.

  • Can I replace 15 inch retina display that broke on my sons Mac , if so how much

Can I replace 15 inch retina display that broke on my sons Mac , if so how much

You will have to take it to an Apple store genius bar and talk with the techs, or take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider and get their estimate.  Typical is on the order of $500 in the US.
This is not a user replaceable item, doing so will void any warranty and all further support from Apple.  They are pretty emphatic about that no further support thing so be sure to use an authorized repair service.

  • Question: actual dimensions of PowerBook vs iMac display

    If anyone knows:
what's the actual dimensions (W x H) of the PowerBook 15.2" display versus the old Flat Panel iMac 15.0" display?
The 15" Powerbook is listed at 1280x864 and the 15" iMac is listed at 1024x768. The ratio is 1.5 to 1 versus 1.33 to 1.
Does anyone know the dimensions in inches of the two?

Yep, thanks! That's what I got.
I already have the 15" iMac. I was wondering how the 15" Powerbook compared from an aspect ratio difference. A little wider, but a little shorter too.
    Thanks again.

  • Powerbook Titanium/G4 need compatible USB PCMCIA USB 2.0 card

I have a G4/Titanium Powerbook and acquired a new iPod Nano (4th G). It requires a USB 2.0 port to synch/recharge, but my Laptop only has USB 1.1. I thought that a PCMCIA card would remedy the situation, but when I purchased one from SIIG, I was told by their Tech SUpport that the card did not support iPods. Synching on the USB 1.1 is murderously slow and I want to keep my war horse functional as long as I can. Does anyone know of a PCMCIA Card USB 2.0 adaptor that will work with iPod Nano 4th G? Thanks.

    Hello Jim,
You've landed in the PowerMac G4 forums for late-model desktop machines like pictured under my name at the left. The G4 PowerBooks have separate forum areas, broken down by model. This link takes you to the forum for the Ti PowerBooks:

You may also consider asking on the appropriate iPod forum, as someone there may have worked it out for your model.

  • Powerbook Titanium won't connect to internet via Airport Extreme.

Hi everyone, I just boght an used Airport Extreme (White UFO version) and getting it to work with my MBP took about 5min and then it worked like a charm but my wifes Powerbook titanium is another thing...
It will connect to the router but I can not connect to the internet, the same with my "Scrap/sparepart" Powerbook titanium... it connects to the router but it stops there. My wifes PB has an original first gen. Airport card and my spare PB uses an Sonnet extreme PCI card.
I have tried it with WEP, WAP and without security no differens what so ever.
Im starting to lose my mind here running out of ideas...
And my wife is getting more and more crumpy since she cant check mail or surf on her computer.
    Help please.
    /Dan

It sounds like the problem with the PowerBooks is that both have the incorrect DNS settings for your ISP.
On the MacBook Pro go to System Preferences > Network, and then, note the DNS Server IP address(es) value(s). Then go to each of the PowerBooks and do the same. They should be the same. If not, change the DNS IP addresses to match those on the MacBook Pro.

  • G4 powerbook Titanium 400

i have got a second hand G4 powerbook Titanium 400, but i think the hard drive was wiped by the last owner. how do i install an OS, as i think the cd drive is playing up, help.

if the CD drive is not working properly, you'd need to use external FireWire
optical drive or install from another Mac with FireWre port by using "target mode":
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
put another Mac in target mode and insert OS install CD/DVD, connect it to the PowerBook
then turn on the PowerBook and select OS disc as startup drive by holding
"option" key, then select PowerBook's hard drive as a destination drive in the OS installer (be sue not to install on target Mac's hard drive)
try at your own risk though

  • NVidia Quadro NVS 285 and 30" titanium cinema display

Does the nVidia Quadro NVS 285 (or 55/280 PCI) support the old 30" titanium cinema display? I'm running the display to an HP tower via DVI-D dual link adapted to a DVI dual link (DMS-59), and I can't get it to work. Can anyone help?

I wish I could offer some advice. Instead, I am seeking your thoughts on the new card. Did the X800XT work? I have the same machine as you and am looking to upgrade my 64mb geForce 5200 card with either the 9600Pro for Mac or PC or the X800XT card (by Radeon).
Though it seems like production of the X800XT card has slowed to a crawl, I've found some for sale online. Just nervous, as I've read mixed things!
    Your opinion would be welcomed.
    Thank you,

  • Replacing powerbook display latch hook

    Hi all,
I have made several self repairs on my powerbook and have come to my final repair before my powerbook is like new. The hook on the display came off randomly and now the screen won't stay closed. Now I know PB FIXIT has the parts but unfortunately they don't have the step by step on how to replace the little hook. Does anyone know of any website where I could find this information? Any help would be great even its just a step by step of how you did it yourself. Thanks very much in advance.

      Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Yeah I figured but I can't seem to find instructions
    on that either. Any ideas?
    Thanks for the help.
    Hi Candice,
To replace display front bezel in the powerbook G4 12" the most hardest repair I've ever done beside ibook G3 clamshell because in order to get to the display front bezel, you basically have to take apart everything. follo instruction in the ifixit to get to the display and then open2 screw using small allen key in the display and use plastic stick to open the display.
Then open all the screws in the display itself.
Make sure that you don't misplaced the screws in the display.
Take your time and no need to do it in a hurry.
It usually takes me about 3 hours to do the job.
    Regards
    Flippo
PS: PB G4 15" is easier to replace the latch itself as it is available as separate part from Apple, but if the problem is broken latch holder then the bottom case will need to be replaced.

  • Best replacement for G4 Powerbook Titanium AC adapter?

    Hi all,
My AC adapter has gone kaput, and I am looking for a replacement. (Don't have AppleCare Protection). They are selling for $79 at the Apple Store, and there's a few on eBay. But, I found this generic thing over at macally.com
Does anyone have experience with the macally power adapter? Is it trustworthy?
    TIA-
    Matt

My preferences are for Seagate and Hitachi drives due to the reliability I've had, especially with Seagate, in 10+ years. However other people here have expressed preferences for Samsung and/or Western Digital. There have also been plenty of people against Toshiba drives (many reports of drive failures).
Not all drives offer the same features. For example, some have shock protection whilst others have encryption or may be ultra quiet. Others offer longer warranties etc.
The 80-120GB range should give you plenty of scope. A 5400RPM drive will be a good all-rounder, whilst a 7200RPM offers ultimate speed. Unless you are going to be using disk intensive apps, the 5400RPM should be sufficient. It's also worth looking out for drives with at least 8MB cache.
If you are going to buy an external enclosure then try to get a FireWire or FW/USB combo version. Don't buy a USB-only enclosure as it will not be able to boot up your PowerBook. Having a bootable external drive will give you more and better options when troubleshooting (or if there's a problem with the internal).

  • PowerBook G4 Ti Display Problems It Won't come up full screen

I recently bought this used G4 Ti 15" used thinking all it needed was a hard drive. I seems to boot up Okay I hear the startup tone, I can even reset the PRAM, but the screen comes up with lines and odd colors. Somtimes I can even see the "no system found" icon or the OS 9.1 startup screen, but I can't get the trackpad or a mouse via USB port to make the cursor move! The more I try, like by opening the screen slowly or even shaking it up and down while opening it, the worse it gets. It loks like the screen pixels all are lighting up, but I can't get a full screen picture.
I even tried booting up using FireWire off another iBook and I can almost see the icons until they start fading away.
I'm not sure if it's the logic board, since the USB ports don't work; if it's the screen itself or the wiring to the screen; or if it's the inverter board.
I have taken this apart twice now to check the screen cable since it seems to happen when I open or close the screen.
I did find some cable connections that weren't seated well and I did find a small but POWERFUL magnet floating around inside.
Should I just give this up and part it out? Any help would be welcomed.

  • Powerbook G3 screen display hinge won't stay open

Does anyone know how to tighten the hinge on the display screen?
Once open it just flops open 180 degrees all the way, even with the keyboard.

    David,
Unfortunately there is no adjustment for the hinges/clutches; replacement is the only remedy.
