Replacing SingleLayer SuperDrive with DoubleLayer

Does anyone know if this can be done on a first generation MacBook.
If I were to change the SingleLayer SuperDrive, can a Dual Layer Drive be installed?

Here is a company that offers this service.

  • What drive to replace the superdrive with?

A few days ago the superdrive in my Powermac G4 (MDD - 1.42Ghz) decided to start making tons of circular scratches in any disc that is inserted into the computer. I have a feeling it's going to have to be replaced (actually - this is the second superdrive in the computer. First one was replaced under warantee within the first year... but that's not an option anymore...)
So... what drive should I use to replace it? Is it best to stick with whatever is currently in it - or is it possible to replace it with one of the new dual-layer drives found on dealmac? Most of those don't seem to be specifically mac compatible, but often times things like that work anyway. Does anyone have any experience replacing their superdrive with something else? How does iDVD, itunes, etc. work? Thanks!!!

I installed the Pioneer DVR-111D in my MDD G4 and have not had any problems using it in any applications. I moved the OEM Combo drive down to the second bay and use it as the disk source for copying CDs and DVDs.
BTW, IMO, the 111D is a very quiet and smooth operating drive compared to most optical drives I've heard.
Note, you have to remove the 111D's tray faceplate to use it in the MDD G4 as the faceplate will interfere with the opening and closing of the flapper doors on the MDD G4. Not a big deal, just pry it up gently from the bottom with your fingers and it will pop off.
    Good luck.

  • Replaced bad superdrive with used ifixit model now burning not supported

    Hey,
After using our computer as a dvd player for a year or so the superdrive was shot. I ordered a replacement from ifixit. It plays cds/dvds fine but will not burn. When I press the "burn" button in iTunes my computer says NOT SUPPORTED. ifixit sent me a TEAC DV-W28SLA that was SUPPOSED to work in my iBook.
Does anyone out there know if this drive will even work in this computer and if so, how to make it happen. If this were a Windows machine I would try and find a driver online somewhere. But with OS X, I wouldn't know what to do with the driver if I found one!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
(NOTE: the Mac OS X (10.3.9) is just a guess, I have no idea what operating system I have. I can replace a superdrive but software gives me hives!)

  • Replacement of Superdrive with internal Blu-Ray Rewriter?

I have an older Mac (Mid-2007) and I wanted to change the pre-installed Superdrive with this Blu-Ray internal rewriter, http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Arrival-100-Original-Slot-Load-BD-DVD-Rewrite r-UJ-225-PATA-Blu-ray-disk-Burner/168556
But I believe that the Superdrive is 9mm, would this work, (as the drive is 12.7mm).
Any help is appreciated, Thank You

To my knowledge Apple Mac OS X does not support Bluray at all. There may be an aftermarket program you could use but I'm not sure.
Also I doubt you will find a BR drive that will fit inside the space allotted for the Superdrive.

  • Replacing the Superdrive with an SSD or HD

I'm thinking of replacing my internal superdrive in my 17" MBP (2.3 i7 early 2011), as I very rarely use it, and could do with more internal portable space...
    Can it be done?
Does anyone have any links to tips or guides?
Can anyone recommend specific tools/products I should use?
Can anyone recommend a casing/caddy that I can put the Superdrive into should I wish to use it externally?
Are there any compatibility issues I should be aware of? Particularly with communication with the OS...
    Any other comments?
    Thanks!

Now this is the kinda response I was hoping for!
    Thanks! A few questions...
Has having the second drive affected battery life at all?
Have you experienced any compatibility issues with start-up/mounting/unmounting/OS interaction/transfer rates etc?
Does the SuperDrive still read/write at it's original (or near enough) speed?
    Cheers!
Since a SSD uses less power then a typical spinning HDD I have not noticed and real decrease in battery life.
But then I don't use any of my notebooks on battery that much. My MBP is is 5 weeks old and only has 14 charge cycles on it. My new Dell maybe 5-7 which I got about 1 week before I bought the MBP.
Not sure what you mean by your seconsd question. Are you talking aboth the Superdrive or the second HDD.
    Neither with either.
I never unmount the HDD in the Superdrive bay. If the Superdrive is connect by USB cable once you eject the disc it unmounts and does not mount until you put a disc in.
Yes the Superdrive still reads and write the same as far as I can tell. Which IMHO is very SLOW. Even when it was in the case it was slow. Not sure how jyour is but mine was like watching paint dry.
Tthe only thing you can't do is Boot from it. So if for some reason I need to boot something that is on a CD or DVD I image it and then restore to a USB thumb drive. The one reason I did this is about the only time, in the last 3-4 years, that I use a CD/DVD drive is to make MP3s from music CDs or to burn utilities and info to give to someone.
As far as burning I haven't done that yet on the Mac so I don't know for sure but I don't think I'd have a problem.

  • Installed SSD & replaced Superdrive with HDD. Magic Mouse now sluggish

It may be a coincedance but since I have installed a SSD (to replace to HDD) drive and replaced the Superdrive (DVD Drive) with the existing HDD (using a HD caddy), my Magic Mouse has been sluggish.
At first it seems that my Mac was overall slow but it seems that it was just getting a bit too hot - when I opened Mac and at same time gave things a clean, I made the fan less efficient and more noisy - its OK now. Still seem to be getting hotter than I remember but it is now summer and my apartment is pretty warm.
The heat is on the left hand side of the keyboard (what would be causing that??) and not on the side where the SDD or HDD is.
Anyway, going back to the mouse. It sluggish and lags a bit. I have tried brand new batteries and same problem.
    Any ideas??

I am hving the same issue.
magic mouse with hdd in original place + new SSD in optic drive bay.
OSX is on ssd bay. user on HDD.
Mouse seems to be sluggish when SSD is writing. Dropbox sync + time machine read/write etc.
Any insight on why this is would be great.

  • Replacing superdrive with a laptop drive or a 3.5" drive.

Is it possible to take out the superdrive and somehow mount a laptop drive in it's place or a low power 3.5" drive? I see that MCE has an "optibay" for laptops who would like to replace their superdrives. I'm just wondering if it's possible to use this on an iMac as well or somehow figure out a way to mount it?
    http://www.mcetech.com/optibay/

    Hello
This topic should really be in the +*Expanding your Intel-based iMac*+ forum.
Are you wanting to exchange the superdrive of your new 27" iMac for a 3.5" HD? In which case the answer is yes, but remember that it voids your guarantee, as the only user upgradeable part is the memory. You would be much better off adding a large fast external FW800 drive, at least while in guarantee.
If you did decide to upgrade anyway there are links available on how to open up and change a hard drive. But I would look more carefully at mcetech.com as their web page seems to be way outdated. They are offering to sell OS X v10.5.1(Leopard) and the iMac memory upgrades they offer are of 667MHz DDR2 PC2-5300, while the new iMac's use the much faster 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM.

  • Help required on replacing the Superdrive please!

My internal superdrive gave up the ghost a few weeks back and I have been managing fine with a LaCie external DVD burner without a problem. However, i am thinking of selling my iMac to get one of the newer models and would like to replace the superdrive before selling.
I have found these easy to follow instructions on how to remove the existing drive:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/imacg517inchOpticalDrive.pdf
This all looks simple enough and was wondering if purchasing the Pioneer DVR-K06 would be a viable option as a replacement drive as it seems to only be about £35 ?
    http://www.play.com/Product.aspx?r=PCSH&title=3508472&source=9593
Will this model fit ok into the space vacated by the Superdrive or is it particularly difficult operation to carry out for a novice?
Any help would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks in advance

I replaced my iPhone with a Samsung Galaxy5 and I am not receiving all of my text messages now. The rep at the store told me to go to iTunes and take my phone # off of the account and that would fix the problem. Is that true? What does iTunes have to do with text messages anyway?

You need to remove your phone number from the iMessage system.

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Ever since Firefox 3, I have never been able to upgrade easily. I always get a message telling me I am replacing my version with an older version. How is that possible?

When I download the newest version (this time it was 5, but I had the same problem with 4) and I drag the Firefox Logo to my Applications folder in Mac OSX (10.6.7) I get a message saying I am replacing my version with an OLDER VERSION. How can this be? When I check the Firefox "About" tab, it tells me I am still using 4, so how, if I just dragged 5 to my Applications folder, can I be replacing 4 with an "older" version? Truth be told, my Firefox has never functioned properly since 4, and now I have little "Firefox hard drive icons" all over my desktop. What happened?
I am having trouble with Comcast's XFINITY and they told me to update and maximize my browser. I don't seem to be able to do that. I just downloaded Firefox 5.0, but my version still says 4.1.

  • How to replace one variable with another in large number of queries

    Hello guys!
I have this situation: our company needs to use one variable instead of another for certain amount of queries.
Is there some way to automatically replace one variable with another for a certain characteristic in big number of queries ( like 150 - 200 ) ? Doing this manually would take lots of time)
    Apreciate your help!

you could try (at your own risk) the following:
    1. search the technical id (ELTUID) of your variable in table RSZELTDIR
    2. see where this variable is used in table RSZELTXREF (by filling RSZELTDIR-ELTUIID in RSZELTXREF-TELTUID)
    3. add similar entries for your new variable
    4. delete the entries for the old variable (they're part of the key, so you can't simply "change" them)
