Replacing SSD on Portege R600

I have R600-10X with 128Gb SSD and I wanted to replace it with faster/roomier drive, but inside instead of the SATA drive, I have found ZIF40 drive. Same as in this pic that someone else has posted: http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/3953/portegessd.jpg
Is there any way to have a new SATA SSD drive like Intel 320 connected to this notebook? There is a lot of suggestions in the forums that R600 does support SATA SSDs, however nobody has confirmed it clearly.
Any info appreciated.

Hi

The Portege R600-10X has been equipped with an SATA SSD driveso I dont understand why someone says that R600 does not support the SSD drives
The notebook supports the SATA interface therefore you have to use SSD/HDD which supports the same SATA interface some if the SSD drives requires an firmware update but this should be provided by SSD drive manufacturer

  • Portege R600 - replacement keyboard

    Hi,
    I need a replacement keyboard for my Portege R600. I need a US-international keyboard.
Can you please tell me where I can buy that? Google gave me links for R500 but not for R600. Also the part number would help, for R500 it's P000488460, but for R600 I haven't found it yet.
    Thanks,
    Peter

I already checked those before posting here, but they're not selling separate replacement keyboard as far as I can see...
Like for the R500 a quick google on *P000488460* shows that lots of e-shops are selling it.
My question is wether this same keyboard fits on the R600? And if not, how I can get one for the R600?
    Thanks in advance

  • Portege R600 Built-in HDD Error

My Portege R600 has been working fine until today when it came up with the message "Built-in HDD error" when I switched it on. It then lists the following:
    Intel(R) Boot Agent GE v1.3.24
    PXE-E61: Media test failure,check cable
    PXE-MOF:Exiting Intel Boot Agent.
    Insert system disk in drive.
    Press any key when ready...
I am travelling in South America and do not have access to the system disks.
Can anyone help with this problem ?

you can read about this issue:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=8
It looks like your hdd isn't recognized by bios. The possible reasons:
1 Hdd is dead (should be replaced)
2 the controller on the motherboard is dead (the whole mobo should be replaced)
    3. In bios, lan boot set is the 1st boot device(Go to the Bios F2 on startup and check in Boot priority option)

  • Portege R600 - where can I find the correct SATA drivers?

I wish to install a solid state drive, and to maintain XP. Setting the correct partition alignment in the SSD and electromechanically installing it are now easy, but there is apparently a SATA driver problem because I cannot boot to either the Toshiba restore disk, a new XP install disk, or an image of the original HDD.
Some have suggested using nlite to slipstream the correct SATA drivers into the XP install, and then beginning from scratch with all app installations, etc.
When I look at the laptop's Devices, I find the Toshiba MK1652GSX HDD, drivers for which appear at
    C:\WINDOWS\system21\DRIVERS - then
    PartMgr.sys, pssnap.sys, and thpdrv.sys
    Is that what nlite needs?
Is there another source for the SATA drivers for this laptop?
    Thanks!

Hi, This is my very first letter in this community, so have me excused, if I use it wrong..I reply to the asking for SATA-drivers to R600, nor because I have a solution, but to ask for help myself in a matter much alike: I bought a r600, whishing to downgrade to XP. Unfortunately I did not recieve the XP-downgrade CD together with the Laptop, and now I simply can not get connection to the harddisk, when trying to install XP with a standard XP-boot installCD, even I read about and tried severel INTEL floppy images with Sata-drivers to impose during start of boot with the F6-command: They simply do not work!!
My question; Do ANY that read me in this community have a such XPdowngrade-CD from their puchase of the portege r600 that they do not use, AND WILL BE WILLING TO SELL TO ME ? Message with offer through my home mail? cheers, Niel, Aarhus, Denmark

  • Re: Disabled wireless connection on Win 7 - Portege R600

I have installed Windows 7 (clean installation) on notebook Toshiba Portege R600 and the built in 3G modem doesn't work.
When I start Toshiba Wireless Manager it writes "Radio is turned off. To acitvate, turn on notebook switch.".
I am sure that this switch is on, but switching of wireless connections using Fn+F8 doesn't work so maybe it is off but I cannot enable it. I have installed all updated drivers like: Wireless manager, Wlan driver,
    BT Stack, etc.
    Does anyone have any idea?

I want to enable 3G modem. As I understand the HW switch is to enable all wireless equipments, ie 3G, Wifi, bluetooth. And then Fn+F8 enables or disables each of it. But Fn+F8 does not provide any function. And as I realized, bluetooth don't work as well. I suppose that currently wifi is enabled and 3G and bluetooth disabled, but the Fn+F8 doesn't work to enable it.

  • Portege R600-11B - Cannot install Adobe Acrobat 9 - ActiveX issue

I have recently purchased a Portege R600-11B and have been trying to install Adobe Acrobat 9 on it by downloading from the Adobe site.
I have spent several unsuccessful hours talking to Adobe to try and resolve this issue.
They have concluded that my laptop is not compatible with the software.
This is not the case as this laptop exceed the systems specification required in all aspects.
The problem appears to be that it will not run ActiveX even after all firewalls and virus software in disabled - I don't really know what to do - does anyone have any suggestions please?

    >They have concluded that my laptop is not compatible with the software.
    Thats simply nonsense
The Adobe Acrobat Reader is a small application and can be installed on nearly all computers and systems So thats definitely not a reason why you are not able to install this software.
If this issue is related to the ActiveX then you could change this in your internet browser settings.
For example using the IE7 you could change this here:
Tools->Internet Options->Zones->{zone}->ActiveX controls and plug-ins->Allow previously unused ActiveX controls to run without prompt
You could also try to clean the OS and the registry because the issue could be related to the faulty registry entries.
For this I would recommend using the CCleaner free tool.
Last but not least its always advisable to check the support homepage of the software manufacturers. Here you can find some docs about installation issues with the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

    Check it out!

  • Portege R600 - Difference between cooling options

I have a Portege R600 with Windows 7 installed, but I guess my query is generic to all Porteges regardless of the version of Windows.
Could someone please explain to me what the different "cooling options" in the power settings actually mean? I couldn't find details anywhere.
Does battery optimized mean that the cpu fan gets activated only beyond a certain temperature? And what's the difference between cooling and maximum performance?
Is there any other way to set the cpu fan speed directly?
This is a very important point to me, because the fan of the Portege is terrible, too noisy, to the extent that I am considering return the laptop unless I find a solution. Sometimes it sounds like a Ferrari engine at a billion rpms!
    Thanks!

    This points to:
    which mentions that:
"If the sound of the CPU fan seems too loud, a setting that optimizes battery life will also cause the CPU fan to turn on less frequently."
However, my problem was quite the opposite: optimizing battery life causes the fan to stay off most of the times but to make the noise of a Ferrari engine at max speed when it activates. Optimizing performance, instead, means the fan is almost always on but barely noticeable, and never makes the disturbing Ferrari-like noise.
Maybe it's just me, but that kind of noise prevents me from using the laptop and would have cause me to return it had I not found a solution. I simply think that it's such a big potential problem that a clear solution should have been explained in huge letters, all the more so because the solution is very banal. It might be just my opinion, but judging by reviews and comments on forums, I'd say it isn't.

  • Portege R600 and Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 (custom install). Subsequently installed the Toshiba installer to load all relevant programs/drivers. I have a problem with the screen, particularly in Word 2003. It will suddenly distort, so that the words become faded/dotted/lined, in such a way that you cannot read the screen. A second open document in Word will be unaffected. Closing the particular document and re-opening clears the problem. The document remains fine, and is not corrupted.
Also found that sometimes when booting up or waking from hibernation, the machine freezes and it sounds like the fan is working overtime.
Nothing will happen then unless I force a power down and restart.
Finally, the wheel on my mouse (latest Windows 7 drivers installed) will not work to resize a Word screen, and will not work in the folder pane in Outlook 2003.
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers

Strange! I have installed Office 2003 on two Toshiba notebooks with Win7 and everything is OK.
Have you noticed some other display issues running Win7 on your Portege R600, for instance in Internet Explorer or some other running application?

  • Portege R600 - SD Cards detected but can't browse or format

    Hi
I have problem on my Portege R600-10U (Windows 7 Ultimate) with SD card reader. When I put SD card in to the slot it is detected by the system but I can not brows it nor I can do format.
I did installation of RICOH_Media_Driver_v2.07.01.00 from Toshiba support site but when I check driver for SD card reader it is showing some default generic driver from Microsoft.
Also I am not sure if that is important, but I can see sd reader on the list of devices only when I put card in to the card reader.
I even tried to do manual installation of driver by selecting extracted content of carc-20091103162555.zip (RICOH_Media_Driver_v2.07.01.00 folder) but windows didn't found any appropriate inf files in it.
Am I missing something, are there any prerequisite before I do installation of card reader driver or maybe card reader it self is not working properly.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Igor

I am trying to use Kingston class 4 SDHC with 4GB capacity. A far as I know r600 should be able to read it without any problem. Card it self is ok since I use it in my camera.
I don't have any warnings on device list with or without Ricoh media driver installed. When you check SD Host Adapters, you can see SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller and driver provider is Microsoft.
Problem is I am not sure where to look in order to see if Ricoh drivers are used and not some Microsoft default driver.
    Cheers

  • Portege R600 (PPR61E) - How to disable WLAN in BIOS?

    Hi,
I have a Toshiba Portege R600, model number PPR61E with BIOS version 1.50. I want to be able to disable Wireless in the BIOS. This should be possible because the option exists on page 2 of the Bios screen under 'PCI LAN'. It is greyed out, however. I have tried enabling and disabling various options to try and get it to appear and the wireless switch is also enabled. It definately has a Wireless card in the Laptop because I can see wireless networks in windows.
I've also downloaded the latest BIOS from the Toshiba Website, version 1.80 but this does not work. It comes up with the error message, not compatible with this model of PC. I selected the correct model of machine and logged in with an account with local admin rights and ran the update from the machine.
Has anyone else had this problem? Help would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Martin Milner

The Wlan cannot be disabled in BIOS!
If you want you can disable the WLan card in device manager but not in the BIOS.
Furthermore youve got a Wlan switch at the notebooks side there you can enable and disable the WLan functionality!

But if you want you can get in contact with an local Toshiba ASP and could order such screen from the guys
Here you an find a database with all ASPs worldwide:

  • Getting Windows 8.1 on my 16GB replacement SSD

On my new HP Pavilion, I have a 2TB hard drive and a 16GB (SanDisk) SSD.My original 16GB SSD failed, and I received a replacement from HP. I installed the new SSD with no problem. However, I believe that the replacement SSD is empty. I understand the OS should be installed on it, so that the system boots more qwickly.I have set up my 2TB drive with apps and files, and it works fine, since the installation of Windows 8.1 is on it.If the function of the 16GB SSD is to contain the OS and for the system to boot from it (so that it boots more quickly), I need help in getting the OS on the small drive.I am afraid that if I run the System Recovery DVDs that I'll erase all of the work I've done on my 2TB drive, and that I'll have to reinstall apps, files, etc. I appreciate any assistance you cvan provide. Thank you,Tim_Paul

Hi again Tim_Paul, Thank you for the quick reply! To answer your first question, I recommend entering the BIOS when the computer first boots up and check to see if the SSD is visible from a list of bootable drives. If it is, you do not need to worry about initializing the drive, as the computer will recognize it as a viable drive to boot from. Once the 2TB hard drive is removed, and if you can see the SSD in the BIOS, you can recover your system by following the steps in this document on Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8). To anwser your second question, you will not need to remove the hard drive with all of your files and apps, as it will be catalogued in the BIOS as a secondary drive. I did find out, however, that the system requirements for Windows 10 needs a 16GB hard drive for the 32-bit version, and 20GB for the 64-bit. With this being said, there may not be enough space on your SSD to effectively run the minimum requirements for Windows 10. Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!
    Regards

  • Portege R600-102: which SSD for upgrade?

    Hello everybody.
I'd like to upgrade my SSD from the actual 128GB to a bigger one: which are the specs for the new SSD to work? Which interface does it need to have? Which physical dimensions?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    TIA,
    Flavio.

    Hi
I assume the SSD upgrade is the same like HDD upgrade.
The notebook support SATA controller You will need an SATA SSD drive.
The old SSD drive is 9.5mm height the new SSD drive should support the same height.
Since the SATA controller is not limited to any size, it should be possible to use SSD drives bigger than 128GB but there is still an question of BIOS support.
Unfortunately, its not known to me if the BIOS would support bigger SSD drives but usually this should be supported.

  • Portege R600: "Smeared" video -- intermittent

This R600-S4201 is terrific. I like the weight plus the unique transflective screen that permits work in the park. I've maximized RAM to 5GB, added a superfast SSD, tailored the OS (W7), and keep the cooling system clean - all to keep this lovely ultrarportable functioning as a business machine (no games, videos, etc.) It's been excellent.
*HOWEVER:* Just recently, the screen will intermittently show a "smear" of the image. It's unpredictable, and not associated with any particular software.
I downloaded and re-installed the current video driver, carefully checked other functions, malware, etc. The problem persists.
What can I do to further diagnose the issue? I'd like to avoid motherboard replacement.
    THANKS!
    Ng

    Hi
    >What can I do to further diagnose the issue?
I think the best way to check whats going wrong with the notebook is the usage of external monitor.
Connect the 2nd monitor to the notebook and check if the same smear effect would be noticeable on the external display.
In case you will see the same blurred image on the external monitor, the problem might be related to faulty graphic card and in such case I dont think that you will avoid the motherboard replacement.
In case the same image would appear properly on the external monitor, the problem might be related to the internal notebook display. However, in such case further investigation would be necessary.
