Replacing SuperDrive in a PowerMac G5

Just a quick follow up question. Thanks in advance for any assistance. I recently purchased a new Samsung drive that I haven't been able to install yet because apparently I need a hex head to remove the screws at the bottom of the original. My question is this, my Mac was purchased around Spring 2005. All the tutorials online show examples where the Mac has an EMI shield in front of the drive. Mine doesn't have one. Is this piece necessary to run 3rd party drives or was this something discontinued in the later model? I tried holding it in to test it and it doesn't seem like the drive will push through the case door on the PowerMac. And yes I removed the bezel on the secondary drive. Just bugs me that I might need something that wasn't supplied to me on my initial purchase. Thank you Mac Geeks

I just used a pair of Pliers on mine.

I'm not sure, but I don't think mine did either.

Was that with the four spacers installed from the old one?

  • Replaced Superdrive Not Seen in System Profiler 10.5.1

I just noticed my replaced Superdrive ( Pioneer DVR-111D [Beige Bezel] 'SuperDrive' 16X DVD w/DL + CDRW Burner) does not show in System Profiler under 10.5.1. It did after replacement after using Patch Burn under 10.4.0. Now Patch Burn says that it is unnecessary under 10.5 (Leopard). Also, there is no burn button available with iTunes (08). I don't want to waste a DVD to experiment, so does anyone happen to know anything about this (Mr Totes or any of the resident SD specialists?). Any and all comments would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Chris

  • Replacing Superdrive

Recently I've run into issues with my superdrive -- end result, it's shot. I've owned it for almost two years now, and burned many DVD's, so it is to be expected.
My question -- It is a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D, according to the system profiler. I found it online, for around $130 (apple is asking for between $200-$300 to replace it)... Should that work, so long as I take the face plate / drawer door off? Do any of you have any recommendations for another possibly better or equally good burner, that will work with my G5 (last model's "top of the line" G5 dual 2.0GHz procs)?
    Thanks in advance!

When Apple introduced OS X 10.4x they also included support for many different types of hardware, one of which is quite a few DVD writers. The Pioneers are a good choice as they are one of the brands Apple uses for their "superdrives". The question of if iLife will be able to burn natively with a brand new 110D or even your 117D flashed to become a 108 is not as much of an issue as it once was. Should you flash your drive to be a 108 and it doesn't work with iLife, you can use PatchBurn 4 (a software utility) to add your drive to the list of supported products (it's just a change to a file that lists which drives will have native support in iLife, iTunes, etc.
The DVR-110D is even being seen showing up as the drive in some newly shipped G5's, so I suspect that the 110D will become natively supported when 10.4.4 is released.

  • Replacing superdrive with a laptop drive or a 3.5" drive.

Is it possible to take out the superdrive and somehow mount a laptop drive in it's place or a low power 3.5" drive? I see that MCE has an "optibay" for laptops who would like to replace their superdrives. I'm just wondering if it's possible to use this on an iMac as well or somehow figure out a way to mount it?
    http://www.mcetech.com/optibay/

    Hello
This topic should really be in the +*Expanding your Intel-based iMac*+ forum.
Are you wanting to exchange the superdrive of your new 27" iMac for a 3.5" HD? In which case the answer is yes, but remember that it voids your guarantee, as the only user upgradeable part is the memory. You would be much better off adding a large fast external FW800 drive, at least while in guarantee.
If you did decide to upgrade anyway there are links available on how to open up and change a hard drive. But I would look more carefully at mcetech.com as their web page seems to be way outdated. They are offering to sell OS X v10.5.1(Leopard) and the iMac memory upgrades they offer are of 667MHz DDR2 PC2-5300, while the new iMac's use the much faster 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM.

  • Need to replace Superdrive

I screwed up trying to make my superdrive regionfree, so now I need a new one (since there is no firmware update, or any firmware downloads for the shaite!). At this point I'm inches from ******* on the f*#cker!!
Back to the point; does anyone have a suggestion for a new DVD-drive to replace my Matshita uj-825?
    Please help, mac in distress!

I buy mine from macsales.com & if you blow the firmware up trying to hack it, that's on you. Blame Hollywood for this, Apple could care less about reigon codes, but beings they offer DVD player out of the box & the movie industry dictates the licensing requirements, this is what happens.
Welcome to apple discussions. Friendly advice: don't jack with firmwarez on the net & stay cool.

  • G4 does not recognize replacement SuperDrive

Dual G4 Firewire 1.25 GHz (mirror door) has a DVD/ROM drive and I just replaced the SuperDrive with the Apple Original DVR-104WB (Pioneer).
The system profiler does not recognize the newly installed SuperDrive. I am running OSX10.4. I installed PatchBurn 4.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi JM,
I remember that there was a little green plastic thing on the pins. So I just need to move it to the pins designated for master.
Does it matter that the SuperDrive is in the lower bay? A TOSJICA DVD-ROM SD-R1312 drive is in the upper bay. Do I need to make an adjustment to that drive if it has a plastic thing designating it as master?
I was looking at another discussion: "More Comments on MDD G4 Lower Bay Superdrive Cooling" (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/apr03/042103.html) Someone with a configuration similar to mine was changing the jumper to master but ended up putting the superdrive in the upper bay because he thought it would cool better.
Since I have to take the drives out anyway, what do you think about reversing their position in the bays so that the SuperDrive is on top?
    Thank you for helping.

  • Options for replacing superdrive?

Brought my PB into Harvard Tech Center for repair of the Superdrive (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816 firmware DXJ3) and was told it needed replacement (won't load CD/DVDs). Anyone familiar with macserve.com? Price seems to good be true - $195 for drive (Pioneer, not sure if k05 o06) with free shipping?
    Thanks.

  • Replacement superdrive wont eject discs

    Hello!
A while back my superdrive failed and I replaced it with a NEC ND-3520A. I also installed patchburn for iApp support and everything is great.... Usually.... but sometimes when I try to eject media the imac shows the white eject icon, moves the DVD icon off of the desktop, but doesnt open the tray. Once this happens the only way I can get the tray to open is to restart- after which everything behaves normally. I tried using disc utillity and Roxio toast hoping to find a way to eject without restarting, but they both just hang. Does anyone know of a way I can make my iMac re-scan or reset the drive so I can try to eject again?? A unix command maybe?? better yet anyone know how to solve this problem??
    Thanks
    Bob

This may not be the "preferred" answer but.....
One day my son was trying to play a game on my Macbook while I was away. He inserted a DVD that didn't get recognized by the computer. He couldn't get it out and cried apologetically to me. Because I don't have AppleCare I opened it with small screw drivers, removed the disc and reassembled it. But I later found out that if the Macbook is in "sleep mode" but open, it will not accept any discs and if you put one in and "wake it up" the disc will not be recognized or ejected no matter what you do.

  • Off-brand options for replacing SuperDrive ?

    Hello all.
I have a MacBook Pro 17", late 2009 with a bad SATA Superdrive that I need to replace. I'd like to know two things:
    1. Can I use any 9.5mm SATA slot-loading DVD drive?
    2. Anyone have any suggestions that might be a fast or more reliable drive that the Matsushita that the laptop comes with?
I ask #1 because I am traveling in Colombia and anything Apple cost liteally 3X as much as in the states.
    Thanks for any feedback.

this claims to be an updgrade:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/superdrive/MacBook_Pro_17
there are other options, also on this site though:
you may not like this suggestion but it may benefit you in the end. there are options to make your optical bay area, another HDD (or ssd) which can potentially expand your storage capabilities. so anything you're running via cd could be uploaded via any usb optical drive (except the apple made usb superdrive which will only work with the macbook airs and the minimac's), which will greatly reduce your carrying load but boost your storage space to digitally back up your optical information and allowing you to get any option of usb optical device.
this will let you take out your optical drive, and add another 2.5" storage drive. http://eshop.macsales.com/search/optical+bay
these may all void your warranty since these are not apple supported.

  • Installed SSD & replaced Superdrive with HDD. Magic Mouse now sluggish

It may be a coincedance but since I have installed a SSD (to replace to HDD) drive and replaced the Superdrive (DVD Drive) with the existing HDD (using a HD caddy), my Magic Mouse has been sluggish.
At first it seems that my Mac was overall slow but it seems that it was just getting a bit too hot - when I opened Mac and at same time gave things a clean, I made the fan less efficient and more noisy - its OK now. Still seem to be getting hotter than I remember but it is now summer and my apartment is pretty warm.
The heat is on the left hand side of the keyboard (what would be causing that??) and not on the side where the SDD or HDD is.
Anyway, going back to the mouse. It sluggish and lags a bit. I have tried brand new batteries and same problem.
    Any ideas??

I am hving the same issue.
magic mouse with hdd in original place + new SSD in optic drive bay.
OSX is on ssd bay. user on HDD.
Mouse seems to be sluggish when SSD is writing. Dropbox sync + time machine read/write etc.
Any insight on why this is would be great.

  • Seeking advice about replacing Superdrive

I bought my emac in November of '02, and it seems that the optical drive is finally dying. I can't rip a CD without it freezing, and it will no longer boot from a CD/DVD.
I realize I have only a few options in replacing it:
    1. Buy new internal drive and install it myself (which i'm NOT very confident about doing)
    2. Buy new internal drive and pay someone to install it (my locally owned mac store quoted me $100 labor, but I haven't checked with the local Apple Store).
    3. Buy external drive and install the appropriate software/drivers
    Did I miss an option?
Is there an option that my fellow emac users would recommend above the others?
Is there an option that I should avoid?
Is there a brand of either internal or external that anyone would recommend?
    Thanks!
eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   800 MHZ processor, 512 mb RAM

I'd just like to encourage anyone considering replacing the optical drive in their eMac. I bought the original eMac 700 with CD-R. I upgraded the RAM a couple years ago but was too intimidated to try upgrading to a Superdrive. When I updated to Panther, I paid an additional $10 for the media exchange from DVD to CD-ROM. I finally decided to attempt an upgrade when iLife 2006 was released on DVD only.
I bought the Panasonic DVR-110D from newegg.com for $40. It took a little more than an hour to finish the upgrade.
This site has a good overview of the procedure: http://www.wilko.com/emac/
More detailed step-by-step instructions are available in the eMac Service Manual (link at bottom of http://www.lbodnar.dsl.pipex.com/eMac/eMac-upgrade.html)
I followed the eMac Service Manual 'Take Apart' section through the step of removing the 'Digital Module Assembly' (page 25). At this point, I started following the directions on the wilco.com website. The original CD-R drive came out easily after unplugging two cables in the back and two screws on each side. The Panasonic Superdrive is not quite as long as the original drive but the frame accomodates it easily and the screw positions are identical. By deviating from the eMac Service Manual I was able to avoid some the more onerous steps, such as removing the logic board and heat sink or discharging the CRT. (My eMac was unplugged for more than 48 hours before I took it apart.)
I reversed the process to re-assemble my eMac and pushed the power button with doubts as to whether the computer would recognize the drive before tinkering with a lot of firmware and drivers. I needn't have worried. It all worked fine. Thank you Apple.

  • Replacing superdrive - What about Boot Camp? (LG GGC-H20L)

    Hello!
After only 5 months my superdrive broke. The authorised Service Provider in my area told me that they can´t just hand me a replacement, instead I would have to bring them my Mac Pro and repair takes 3-4 days! They could replace it right away if I pay them 35 Euros! What a rip-off.
Now I wanted to just buy a new drive and put it in. Less hassle. I wanted to get the LG GGC-H20L so I could watch Blu-Rays and HD DVDs under Windows but now I read that it is not recognized under boot camp. I understand, it has something to do with the ODD SATA ports. Boot Camp would require an "altered GRUB boot loader". I have no idea what that means. How do I do that and does it work?
How do I know which drives are recognized in boot camp?
I run OS 10.5 and Windows XP.
    Thank you very much!

I just installed the LG GGC-H20L drive in my Mac Pro (early 2008) by using this adapter - http://www.cooldrives.com/sahadradtoid.html It costs me $17.98 + $5.35 shipping to New York City. It was easy to install, and was recognized under Boot Camp and OSX. Be sure to read the instructions and watch the video on the web page above.
The adapter lets you attach your LG drive to the IDE ATA cable that your original drive was attached to, instead of having to use the internal sata port. After installing the included software on the CD, I was able to play DVD movies. The Cyberlink Blu-Ray/HD Advisor showed my system (Boot Camp only) was capable of playing Blu-Ray and HD discs, although I haven't played any Blu-Ray movies yet; I am waiting for my first Blu-Ray movie to arrive. I will update this post as soon as I can.
