Replacing the disc drive

Hi guys,
I got a problem with my European macbook pro (13 inch, model early 2011) disc drive. I accidentally changed the Dvd Region Code five times and now I only can play American Dvd's and no European ones. And I was told that the only way to fix this problem would be by replacing the disc drive.
Is that true and how much does it cost? Or should I just buy an Apple Super Drive?
I really hope someone can help me.

Yes it is true that you can only change that in your MBP by replacing the Disk Drive.  Probably the option would be to get an external region free disk player. Note that you may have legal constraints based upon where you reside.  As far as costs go for replacement, that you can only find out by contacting the service facility.
Ciao.

A reply to similar question (Q & As , in product page Apple Store) says:
"...dissable the internal reader hardware from devices setup. Then plug the external usb superdrive and that's it."  Answered by Enrique T from Lima Oct  25 2013.
If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My G62-340US, I just had to replace the hard drive. My recovery discs seem compromised. HELP

On my G62-340US, I just had to replace the hard drive. I made the 4 recovery discs when it was new. Now restoring it 3 of the recovery discs ran but the 4th disc won't. Can the info on the 4th be found anywhere without having to buy a new set? Or can I buy just one disc?

    Hi:
As far as I know, you would have to buy an entire new set.
But, if you can read all 25 characters of the W7 product key on the bottom of your notebook, I have a free solution to install a plain version of W7 by using the product key code on your notebook.
    Here's how to do that...
Download the W7 Home Premium 64 bit ISO file from the Microsoft link below.
    http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso 2147483647 X17-58997.iso Windows 7 Home Premium x64 English
Make sure you got the whole 3.xx GB file to download because in rare circumstances, you get a download complete notification but you don't get the whole file to download.
After you download the ISO file you can burn it to a DVD using the ISO file burn option on your DVD burning program, or you can use this tool to transfer the ISO file to a DVD or 4 GB USB flash drive.
The tool will also make the media bootable.

Then go to your notebook's support and driver page for the drivers and available software you need.

I dropped my mac pro. The disc drive plays but will not record. medium drive error. How hard is it to replace the drive my self. i see screws on the bottom. Could I just order a new internal drive and replace it? Or is it too complicated for the average person? Would be cheaper to buy an external drive than to replace internal one? Any advice is appreciated

How certain are you the superdrive ONLY is at fault?
That depends on your skill level, if you grew up tearing things apart and putting them together, its absurd how easy it is.
For some however its too daunting.   On a general skill level for the "average" person its about a 3 out of 10 in difficulty.
    Can you order same? yes.

  • Communication between the computer and the disc drive failed

The disc can’t be burned because because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022). This computer has been out of the box for less than a month and this has been a growing problem.

My problem was FIXED at the apple store..... there was something wrong in the system preferences and the genius deleted something that recreated it's self. Surely enough we we're able to burn a 600 mb dmg of nothing onto a few test disks. For anyone having this issue...it's NOT The media, it's some configuration issue within the computer's preferences. I'm telling you all to take your machine to the nearest apple store and have them fix it, if your machine is still under warranty the fix is free. There was no hardware issue, so the optical drive was not replaced.

  • ITunes 11.4 The attempt to burn a disc failed. The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry.

    27-inch, Late 2009
    Processor 2.66 GHz Core i5
    8 GB memory
    Software OS X 10.9.5
    iTunes 11.4
Can not burn a playlist in iTunes 11.4 to a CD, upon completion of the burn operation get error message, "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry."  Receive this message using 2 different external drives that are Apple compatible. 1. is a Pioneer SuperDrive that I had replaced from a previous Mac in a OWC enclosure, 2. the other is a OWC 8X Slim Portable USB 2.0 External. After receiving the error message I can re-insert the disc into the drive and it will mount the disc and it will list all the songs with the correct size, but none of them will play. iTunes then comes up asking me if I want to import the CD, at this time iTunes has a (not responding) status in Finder. Can burn from finder with no problem, only have issue in iTunes.
    Background
Last year I took the iMac to the local Apple Store 3 times and they determined the optical drive was defective and replaced it, the last time even replacing the cable to it. When I attempt to burn playlist from internal Superdrive it states it can not burn due to media errors. I have tried Memorex, TDK and PNY  media with the same results. I thought purchasing the OWC Slim Portable USB 2.0 External would resolve the issue.  If I put a commercial audio CD into the Internal Superdrive it will not mount and will eject it, if I insert the commercial audio CD into the external drive it will mount and play. Now the extended warranty is expired on the iMac and I don't know what next to try.

After multiple attempts to both find an answer to this problem or to fix it myself I've given up and switched to a Windows PC. The same media works just fine at maximum write speed with no special tricks needed. I got my iMac specifically to manage my photographs and burn images for friends and family. It has been nothing but a big disappointment to say the least. To read messages saying I need to lower my write speed or buy more expensive CDs is just laughable. Unless I see something major change I'm sticking with my Windows PC.

The optical drive is "8X SuperMulti Slimslot SATA interface DVD-ROM optical drive - Form factor 12.7mm height, read all CD-ROM medai and DVD-RAM discs", and I have fouhd several available on the internet by searching by the Part Number 467613-ZH1.
I hope I have answered your question to your satisfaction. Thank you for posting this question on the HP Forums. Enjoy your weekend!

apple new macbook pro dosent have a disk drive. Does the older model have a problem with the disc drive and so is removed in the new model?

No. Apple replaced the disk drive with a solid state drive (SSD) instead. The SSD is faster the old disk drive.

  • A quick question concerning replacing the DVD drive in a HP pavillion dv6-2057cl

I need to replace the DVD drive in this dv6 and I am wondering if there is any wiggle room when it comes to the replacement drive.  Can I use another HP disc drive with a similar model # or am I restricted to the "identical" drive?
    Some quick info follows:
    OS = Windows 7 home premieum (32bit)
The drive pulled out of the laptop:
    Super Multi DVD Rewriter
    MODEL: GT20L
    FW        : DC05
    HW       : A2
    TYPE    : AMCK702
    CT : 7AXVK012GY3NRY
    HP mPC PN : 461646-6C2
    S/N :
    {Removed for privacy}
    MANUFACTURED : OCTOBER 2008
I have found a replacement with the same "Model #" and same "HP mPC PN" however it was manufactured in 2009 and I do not know if the placement of the SATA connection on the rear of the drive matches up or not.
    Any help is much appreciated!!!!!!
    Thank you,

It looks like the part number is the same. As long as the part number is the same, it is essentially the same part and should work without any issues. The only time that part may not work is if the part number is different. If any part is different from another part (firmware, hardware, etc.), it will have a different part number. As long as 461646-6C2 is the same on both, there shouldn't be any issue with replacing the drive.

  • W540 replacing the cd drive for a second hard drive?

    Hi,
I ordered the thinkpad w540 last week. With a regular disc hard dirve and a CD compartment. I figured out after the coputer arrivied that i had a solidsate inside my hp xps 15.
In the best case scenario i would like to replace the CD drive, as the optional config from the online web page said it could be done. How could i figure out if it be possible to replace the CD drive with another Hard Drive?
If not i would be looking at replacing the original disc hard drive for the solid state, but in that case i would loose the windows 8 system. Is is possible to install it again in the new hard drive, with the same license?
I was just wondering because it would be nice mantain the drive inside the computer instead of having to plug it in all the time, and because of the faster speed it would be good to use is as the primary dirver.
    Thanks in advance,
    -Jorge

    Hi Jorge
you will need a "caddy" adapter to house the second HDD/SDD. Just surch here in forum, see http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/forums/searchpage/tab/message?location=forum-board%3AW_ThinkPads&q=caddy... .
For my W540 I am using the caddy from http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=555 and have very good experience over years (W510, W520, W540...).
Regarding replacing original HDD with SSD, there are basically two possibilites - either you use the recovery option (create your own media - see google or try to get one from Lenovo - not sure it will work) or use some transfer software. I am using since years the Acronis products, especially because it recognizes the SSD and aligns everything as it should be on SSD (do not want to go now too deep into sector alignment and so far).
And if you want to run your W540 on steroids, aka max possilbe storage capacity, see my signature...

  • How much would it cost to replace the optical drive

I have a 48 month old mac pro. I use the optical drive quite a bit for listening or downloading music from my cd's. There is now a loud mechanical noise coming from it , and it is now very choosy about what cd's it wants to play. It is also getting very difficult to eject without having to restart it several times as well as pressing subsequent buttons.
I have read several discussions on these pages and have gone through several elimmination processes . Including cleaning discs.
Now i fear that there is no option but to replace the optical drive.
How much am  looking at spending and although its not a perfect remedy , is it cheaper to buy an external drive as much as that would pain me.
    Thank you.
    Ray.

Optical drives for 2008-2012 Mac pro desktops use the standard SATA connectors. That drive
    http://www.lg.com/us/products/documents/GGC-H20LSpec.PDF
has those connections. Thus is should be directly replaceable with your original drive.

  • Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed

I get this error when trying to burn more than 1Gb of stuff to a DVD+R disc. or a DVD-R:
Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed.
    Error Code 0x80020022
Any idea if my drive ***** or something?

Hi everyone, just thought I'd update the thread.
Last night i did a clean install of Leopard over the top of Tiger, and now the DVD drive works without the error. I was able to burn a full disk with no problem.
I thought, incase google bring someone here, I'd post my sequence of events incase it helps someone.
New MBP C2D migrated user from MBP CD
Could not burn disks on media of any format over about 1.5Gb
Put up with the problem as I couldn't afford to lose my MBP for 2 days while it was replaced by Apple.
Upgraded to leopard with formatting drive and clean install. I did not migrate the user, I just reinstalled the apps I wanted, synced my dotmac goodies, and copied over all my data folder by folder.
Result is a fully functioning DVD burner that burns without communication failure.

  • I recently replaced the hard drive in my Ibook but am having trouble loading OSX onto the disk. Using Mac install dics 10.5.2 but won't book up. Any one have suggestions?

After replacing the hard drive and memory in my ancient Ibook I tried to install OSX from older install dics- OSX 10.5. Pressed C key after putting in the disc and started up the computer and just get spinning clock and a bunch of whirling from the disc drive but no boot up. What am I doing wrong? Am I missing a disc or is there some other magic that I'm not aware of? I could really use some help on this one.

Here's the proper sequence of events:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
