Replacing the HDD and installing leopard (PLEASE HELP)!!!

hi there,
i currently have a macbook that has just gone out of warranty. i bought a new HDD from WD, installed tiger (using the original discs that come with the mac) and then installed leopard. it seemed to be working fine (apart from a few keyboard buttons playing up), until less than 2 weeks of doing this, the hard drive crashed out on me. i was absolutely gutted! mainly due to the fact a lot of the files i copied over and new ones had gone. i put in the original HDD (which i left as it was) and it worked as normal. i have now received a new HDD from WD and am about to install it along with 2 x 1GB RAM sticks.
i have no problems installing the HDD again or the RAM. the only concerns are, when selecting the new HDD when previously installing it, i lost out on about 30GB of memory (10GB after formatting, 15GB after installing tiger & 5GB after installing leopard). that's about a quarter of my HDD gone. i would have installed leopard clean but i wanted ilife '06 that came with tiger.
is there a way to install leopard clean and then install just ilife '06 by itself from the installation discs, so i can save some space on the new HDD?
if anyone can help i would be so grateful, thanks, ravi.

Install Leopard by itself. Do not install Tiger. When you do your Leopard install watch the lower left corner of the install screen and when you see custom click it. That way you can choose not to include all the printer drivers and language files. That will knock off a few gig.
Once Leopard is running insert your 1st install disk. Once it opens choose the install bundled software choice. Once it is open you can do a custom install and put just what you want back on your MacBook. That way you don't get all the extras.

  • Replacing a hdd and installing Windows 7.... Help, please!!

    I am not very technologically-minded.
I have a Toshiba Equium L40 laptop running Vista with a 120Gb hdd.
I thought it might be a good idea to upgrade the hdd and install Windows 7.
Am I right in thinking that the easiest way to do this would be to install the new hdd first [320Gb].
Then install the Toshiba Recovery disc [to install the appropriate drivers].
    Then install Windows 7.
Is this the easiest/best way, guys?

    Hi Clive..
    Thanks for your advice.
Just to clarify, to follow your advice, would I download the device drivers first?
If so, from where? And which device drivers?
I would like to install the larger hdd (320Gb). I have already bought one - and I need it for all the media material I have now accumulated.
Would you suggest, therefore, simply installing the new hdd. And then installing Windows 7 (clean install). And then the device drivers?
I was originally thinking of installing the new hdd followed by an installation of the Vista recovery disc - since this would install enough device drivers and necessary Toshiba programmes to enable me to update device drivers thereafter.
I have never done this before. So if my proposed sequence of actions sounds 'bobbins', please excuse me!
[The man in the shop said installing a new hdd and then installing Windows 7 was easy if you knew what you were doing - but not at all easy if you didn't.]

Just how do you do an internet recovery on a system that has a blank HDD with no operating system that the unit cannot boot from????
If your Mac came preinstalled with Lion or Mountain Lion after you install your new blank HDD, restart the Mac while pressing/holding the COMMAND+OPTION+R keys until you see a spinning globe. Make sure you have an Internet connection (WiFi or Ethernet). This will boot into Apple's Recovery HD servers and present you with the OS X Utilities Menu. From there you can select Disk Utility to format your new HDD and then reinstall Mac OS X for the OS that was preinstalled.
Internet Recovery doesn't care if you have an unformated HDD because it boots over the Internet to Apple's servers, not your HDD.

I hate to say this, but unless you are paying the 25 bucks you cannot back up your library to the cloud.
All you can do is back up the items you "purchased" from Apple.
    iTunes Match
For $24.99/year you’ll get access to all your iTunesmusic including tunes you ripped from CDs or “borrowed” from anonymous friends. It scans your library to see if the song exists in iTunes’ 18 million song catalog and if it does it’ll stream it to you at 256 kbps. If your song is not in iTunes then it’ll be uploaded to iCloud at whatever rate it is on your device where it can be streamed for your listening pleasure. I cannot find any information on how to restore a library, however
    Best of luck

  • TIGER/POWERBOOK 12" G4 - erase and install problems. please help..

    Hello,
I have a powerbook g4 (the last of the powerbook 12"/ 80gb/1.5ghz to be released) with tiger installed.
I have had a a crash x 2 when doing software updates. So I managed to get it going, to then back up to an external drive - to do an erase and install.
Once I went to do the erase and install it failed, so I tried again and it seems to have done the erase. now my actual HD isn't visible as the select detination to install?
So, I can't actually even attempt to install with no destination.
any help would be most appreciated.
    thankyou

Unfortunately, it seems as if your HDD has failed. Try booting from the install disk, the go to the Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility. If the HDD shows up in the sidebar, you should reformat it. (Directions below). If it does not show up, you need to replace the HDD. Post back for a list of available HDDs and vendors, step by step directions and additional tips.
If your HDD shows up follow these directions to reformat and erase:
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
    • Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
    • Click on Options button
    • Select Apple Partition Map (PPC Macs) or GUID Partition Table (Intel Macs)
    • Click OK
    • Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note 1: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    • Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Quit Disk Utility.
If you are able to do the reformat and erase, you can then proceed to restore from your backup, or to install the OS from disk.
Please do post back with an update on how it goes, and with further questions or comments, if any.

However I can't do that: every time I restart my Power Mac and it starts of from the Cd, I choose a language but when i press next, it says: cannot opdate to v10.5 on your computer..
Why does it say that? I just want to keep my user, but not delete and re-installl everything!!

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
If you are trying to do a standard update to Leopard and you are already running Leopard, you have to choose the archive and install. The standard upgrade is only from Tiger or lower to Leopard.
After the language screen, at the lower left, I believe, is an "Options" button. Click it and select archive and install.
This should keep all your present settings, but I would caution you that you shuold NOT do anything unless you have a full backup of your present system.
You did not specify why you want to reinstall Leopard. Maybe you do not need to do a complete reinstall if you would post your problems.
Again, don't do anything unless you have a current backup either with TM or CarbonCopy.

  • Format HDD and Install Leopard Again.

    Hello,
I have a macbook C2D with 2GB of RAM and a 320 GB HDD.I have around 15 GB media in my iTunes.
Now I want to format my Hard disk completely and install leopard as a fresh copy.
How do I go about this?I also want to back up all my content and then restore them once I install Leopard again.
I still have the 120 GB HDD which I originally got with my MB and also an enclosure.
Please advice the procedure to follow.
    Thanks

SuperDuper! is not a bit copier -- it is file based for safety & does not copy certain files to the clone.
Likewise, Setup/Migration Assistant does not do a bit-level copy. The assistant allows you to select which user account(s) to migrate & if you want to transfer applications, files and folders, or your Library folder. You can also choose whether or not you want to use your old network, time zone, and sharing settings.
I recommend one additional step in addition to what macjack provided: before doing the install, use the "Partition" tab of Disk Utility (available from the "Utilities" menu of the Installer disk) to reformat the drive. (One partition is the usual choice.) An Erase & Install does not format the drive, which includes rewriting the partition scheme information & partition(s) used for that. The extra step is quick & the only way to completely format the drive.
Note: make sure you choose the "GUID Partition Table" with the "Options..." button if you want the standard partition scheme for an Intel Mac.

  • The update and other problems PLEASE HELP!!!

The ovi store on my phone asked me to download the newer version which I did, is there an update for ovistore on the computer because I haven't heard about it if there is one and it may solve the problems I have been having with it:
    1. I don't receive the messages when trying to get an app
    2. It wont let me down load apps when I connect my phone to the computer
(also on the nokia website it told me to click the download and install button to get an app when plugged into the computer but I can't find it..Any ideas where it is???)
please help i've had this problem since I first set up my account and its really bugging me now!!!!!!

    (Apologies for barging in Steve.)
These ones are typically caused by underlying problems on the PC that also often cause Windows Updates to fail to install. If we can fix the Windows Update trouble, we can usually get the iTunes trouble cleaned up en passant.
Go into your Windows update and try to check for new updates. If updates install, stock up on the ones you're behind on, restarting the PC if requested to do so. After the restart, try installing iTunes again. Does it go through this time for you?
If windows updates fail to install, go into your Update History and doubleclick the failures. What alphanumeric codes appear for you? Are they also 80071A91, or some other number? (If they're another number, what number are you getting?)

  • When i try to purchase an app that is free, i click the install green button and it just goes back to the free button and i can't download it?  it just toggles back and forth between free and install.  Please help.

When I try to purchase any free app, I try to click the green install button and it toggles between the install and free icons in the app store.  Tried rebooting and also syncing iphone to computer but no luck.  Any suggestions?

If resetting the iPad doesn't help, try these things.
Quit the App Store app completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again. Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button. Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then try to download an app again.
If that fails, try downloading something in iTunes. There is free content in there so find something that you don't have to pay for and download it. If that works, try the App store again.

  • Freezing iMac with both Tiger and now Leopard PLEASE HELP!!

    Hello,
Our 1st gen 24" iMac was giving us Kernal Panics under Tiger 10.4.11 recently it all started two months ago.
We took it into the Apple store for a Cleaning and fresh install of Leopard.
When we received it back it locked/froze up immediately, forcing a hard restart. When I called the store they said one of my sticks of ram was not techinically bad but still suspect.
This is what I did after that call.
    1. Checked the ram physically (the Apple store had placed my 512mb Apple ram stick in slot 1) which I thought very strange.
    2. I corrected the ram, meaning I put the 2gb (suspect) stick in slot 0 and the 512 Apple ram in slot 1. Things were better it would take 10-15 minutes of use before locking up not 1-2 minutes.
    3. I placed a new stick of Crucial (2gb from OWC) in place of the supect stick. that has had ZERO affect, our mac still freezes.
    4. I pulled out the 512mb Apple (Micron) ram and replaced it with a 1gb Micron stick from OWC and that gives us roughly 20-40 minutes of time befroe freezing.
The software is up to date, I've max'd out the ram (at Apple's request) and all we have running is iTunes in the background to stream to AppleTV and a few tabs of Safari open when this locks up.
Right before it freezes we notice lines arcoss the application windows almost as though there a distorted pixels.
If any of you Mac Gods can help guide me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks

Thanks, they did test the HD and booted from an external when I had it at the store, so maybe it is the Logic Board. That would suck bad!

  • I downloaded the new version of firefox, now my flash player wont work, the html text box is gone and so is the back and forward buttons. please help??

I downloaded the new version of firefox, now I cant watch any movies, the html text box is totally gone, and so is the back and forward website buttons, please help? can i just have the old version back?

Not sure whether for instance you initially had a Yahoo optimised version of Firefox, and have now overwritten it with an official Mozilla version. Although the Mozilla version should NOT add unwanted features, but the Yahoo version may well do.
If you merely need to find the Yahoo emails page quickly just add it as a bookmark or as a bookmark on the Bookmarks toolbar and make sure that is visible.
Clicking the star icon on the location bar whilst looking at your emails will bookmark the page.

I do not use Yahoo myself, and am not sure what add-ons are available. You could search yourself using
    * FirefoxButton -> add-ons
** see [[Find and install add-ons to add features to Firefox]]

Try to hold the sleep and home keys for about 20-30 seconds. See if you can force it to reboot.
My iPad did something similar, as did my iPod. I charged it and it turned black, the screen wouldn't turn on but the insides were still working. A reset brought it back.
