Replacing the HDD in mid 2010 i5 27" iMac Intel

Hi Guys I have a mid 2010 i5 Intel 27" iMac with a mechanical  HDD.
I want to fit a SSD.
Questions
1. Which SSD should I buy which is compatible with my iMac. I'd like 1Tb if possible?
2. How do I install the Mac OS on the new drive; I don't have a DVD with the original Mac OS software?
In anticipation - thank you Mark

    Hey Clintonfrombirmingham
I called Apple technical support in Denmark, but with no positive reply.
She couldn't do anything, and said that They had sent a recall Email about the problem and with their offer to repair the Macbook Pro, but I'd never recieved an Email about the problem. She wasn't in power to make an exception. It can't be true that i paid a lot of money, for a product that can't barely stand on its own feets, Apple didn't tell me that the product I was about to buy, would restart every 5 minute. and now when  they know the problem, they wont repair it? it just don't make sense for me. If a car seller discovers that all the brakes in a car he had sold, will crash after some years he will call all the cars back to repair no mater what. i just don't understand how Apple will make good service for their custumers, by extending the warranty from 2 to 3 years, but wont take the computers there is a little bit to old, 4 months will make the difference. i can't believe it.
    What can i do now?
    best regards Oskar

  • Replacing the HDD on a Satellite M50-A-110

    Hi,
I just bought a new Satellite M50-A-110 and I wanted to replace the HDD that came with the laptop with my existing SSD.
Unfortunately, there is no way (that I could find) to reach the HDD bay.
In the previous versions I could replace it with no hassle at all, but here the whole bottom panel is made out of a single piece of plastic that I couldn't remove.
Can somebody please help me out?
Is there a trick in removing the bottom panel that I'm not aware of?
Thank you for your assistance in advance and all the best,

    Hi
Well, the HDD as well as the memory modules or battery are placed under the plastic cover at the bottom of the unit.
You will have to remove the whole plastic cover to get access to such parts.
From my knowledge there are 12 screws securing the bottom cover.
Then you could gently remove the logic lower from the upper by prying the edge of the lower from the right corner.

  • Qosmio X500-10W - Can I replace the HDD with another one?

    Hello
I have a Qosmio X500-10W with two HDD Toshiba MK5055GSX 500GB 5400RPM 8MB ??SATA II but is one of hs so I wonder if I can be replaced by a more powerful style HDD 750GB 7200tr / min 16MB Toshiba course?
    merci

    Hey,
Your question is a little bit hard to understand but I think you want to replace the HDD with another (faster) model, right?
Well, thats no problem. HDDs with 7200rpm will work, they are a little bit louder but they are faster so if you need more performance no problem.
Also 750GB or more is no problem because SATA interface is not capacity limited. Theoretically 1TB or more should also work.
Anyway, you can buy the 750GB you mentioned it will work. :)

  • Does the Mac mini mid-2010 have an active PFC power supply?

I'm about to buy a UPS unit to run my NAS, and I'd like to connect my Mac mini to it as well. Does the Mac mini mid-2010 model have an active PFC (power factor correction) PSU (power supply unit)?
I've read that if it does (as the Dell XPS series do), then one of the cheaper UPS units won't work because those typically have modified/simulated sine wave outputs (you'll only notice when the power is out and the UPS is feeding power from its battery). It would mean I'd have to buy one of the more expensive UPS units like APC Smart-UPS SC620 or CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD.
I can't seem to find any resources that explain this. Please?

FWIW, I use one of these:
    http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems/soho-ups/cp425slg.html?sel ectedTabId=overview&imageI=#tab-box
for my HTPC setup.  I have a 2010 Mini with a couple of USB drives plugged
into it, my 42" Samsung LCD TV, cable modem, cable box, and an Airport Extreme
Base Station running off of the backup power ports (not my 5.1 receiver for obvious
power reasons).  With all on, I get enough time to gracefully power down the Mini with
time to spare when power goes out.  When not watching TV or listening to music,
the cable modem and AEBS can run a long time during a power outage.
I have had this setup for around 2 years and have had no ill effects on any of
the gear and I do periodically have everthing powered then yank the AC
    cord to cycle the battery.

  • Replacing the hdd to a ssd.

I would like to know if the action of replacing the hdd will void the warranty, and also which is the size of the hdd?

    Hi:
There should be no problem with the warranty as long as you don't break something trying to install the HDD.
HP will not support the SSD however and your recovery disks won't work because the new drive will need to be the same size as the 500 GB HDD you removed.
I have a workaround for the recovery disk issue...
According to your PC's system specs it came with W7 Home Premium 64 bit.
It has to be the English, French or Spanish version too.
If so, download the W7 Home Premium 64 bit ISO file at the link below.
Burn the file to a disk using a DVD burning program that can burn ISO files so the DVD is bootable.
Burn at the slowest speed you can.
Then use the 25 character product key on the bottom of your notebook to activate the installation.
Visit your notebook's support and driver page to install any drivers you need.
Link to the MS W7 downloads.

Just how do you do an internet recovery on a system that has a blank HDD with no operating system that the unit cannot boot from????
If your Mac came preinstalled with Lion or Mountain Lion after you install your new blank HDD, restart the Mac while pressing/holding the COMMAND+OPTION+R keys until you see a spinning globe. Make sure you have an Internet connection (WiFi or Ethernet). This will boot into Apple's Recovery HD servers and present you with the OS X Utilities Menu. From there you can select Disk Utility to format your new HDD and then reinstall Mac OS X for the OS that was preinstalled.
Internet Recovery doesn't care if you have an unformated HDD because it boots over the Internet to Apple's servers, not your HDD.

Bluetooth shuttted down after I updated to Mavericks, please help me !
I am 70 Years old and worked very happy with my iMac (21,5“ mid 2010, 3,2 GHz Intel Core 3)
until I updated him from  SnowLeopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks 10.9.2.
2 Days all was OK. Next Morning-Start he needs (until now) 3 minutes to show me a SCREEN only milky white. After that he starts like ever with all ICONS in about 1 minute. (together 4 min.)
..But I must notice, that I cannot make anything, because the „BLUETOOTH APPLE WIRELESS KEYBOARD  and the APPLE  MAGIC MOUSE“ doesn't work anything like before.
I could nothing do, I must drop my APPLE only out.
That I maked ever 10x and all was the same... (Maveriks also 4x new updated)
I taked my Logitech-Bluetooth-Mouse from the WIN-Laptop, dropped it in USB from iMAC...and in one second I could work only with this MOUSE...I buyd the Logitech COMBO K520 and all was OK now with my lovely APPLE iMAC to work with him...But without APPLE KEYBOARD and MAGIC MOUSE...and with a 4 min. -START until now.
I  asked the EXPERTS from APPLE-SUPPORT under Tel. 0800-6645451 in Germany, became a Number, maked many Things by starting new, but the mistake after all is the same like before.
When I look into ...Apple/ Info/System/ Hardware/ Bluetooth   ..my APPLE says: NO INFOs FOUND (Es wurden keine Informationen gefunden.)
Under Hardware/ Diagnose : Selbsttest beim Einschalten: zuletzt ausgeführt: 15.05. 14, Ergebnis: Bestanden (that means OK) !!
I asked many Peaple, who sold APPLE-Computers in the STORS, but they all had no IDEA, how they can help.
I think, it could be a DRIVER when Starting the BIOS, JAVA RUNTIME a.s.o...
Is an Expert under YOU to help me by my Problem with this iMAC ?

    dietmarfromdeu,
if you start up your iMac in Safe mode, do you still have Bluetooth problems with your Apple wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse?

  • What is the best time to set for my iMac intel to get to sleep?

what is the best time to set for my iMac intel to get to sleep? the default is 10 minutes, i am changing it to 1 houirs but i put the sleep time for my monitod 10 minutes. is it decent?

steve359 wrote: The longer it runs, the shorter the expected life (just plain logic),
but if it MUST run 24x7, then likely one has budgeted for a new system
    within 3 years anyway.
Not so sure of that "just plain logic." Allowing  sleep too often will cause wear on the drive -- excessive spin up and spin down. Temperature permitting, a drive will last longer if just left running.
For other hardware, a lot will have to do with the internal temps. When it's quite hot here, I allow the computer to sleep more often. But otherwise, it's a bit of this and a bit of that. I wouldn't personally recommend running 24/7, although I know of several here who claim they do, with no apparent adverse effects over many years.

  • Please help: How to replace all data on mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15 with Timemachine backup from 2009 MBP 13

OK so I bought a mid-2010 MacBook pro 15 from a friend and he did not erase anything before he gave it to me. I was previously working on a 2009 MacBook pro 13 and have a Timemachine backup from that which I would like to install on the MBP 15 replacing all of the current data.
I have tried rebooting using the OSX disc that came with the MBP 15 but that won't work - I am assuming that is because the OSX disc is version 10.6.3 while the current OS on the MBP 15 is 10.7.4
What is the best/easiest way to use the Timemachine backup of my MBP 13" to replace all info on the MBP 15"?
This seems like something that should be easy but I have been trying to do it since last night and haven't found relevant info in the discussion forums. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Replacing the HDD with SSD and reinstalling Mountain Lion

    Hello,
I have a MacBook (Mid 2010) since August 2010. Since then, I have been using Time Machine and every time Apple releases a new OS, I download it from the Mac App Store and put it on a USB so that I can boot from it, whether to reinstall the OS or in case I faced Hard Drive problems.
My HDD is dying slowly, so I planning to get an SSD. The version of Mountain Lion that I have on the USB is 10.8.
The question is, do I have to download a newer version of Mountain Lion (say 10.8.3) from the Mac App Store knowing that I will be restoring from Time Machine?
    Thank you..

Since you want to restore what's on TM to the SSD, the SSD needs to be booted from to receive the restored files and to do that, the SSD has to have an OS on it. And since you'd want to have the SSD's OS updated to the latest ML version eventually, you might as well do that first, since, to some degree, it's also a test  of the SSD's functioning. Since you already have the Combo updater, you could just run that, and since it's only a bit over 800 MB, it might even fit on the flash drive. I don't believe that migrating from a TM file made by and containing 10.8.3 data would be problematic when initiated from a 10.8.0 installation (which is I think what you're asking), but there may be some subtle software changes we don't know about that could come back and bite. So starting the migration after updating to 10.8.3 would be the safest bet. At the same time, Setup Assistant brings your existing account stuff over to just reestablish your existence on the SSD, while Migration Assistant is run after a new account has been set up on first boot, so I'd think Setup Assistant is the better way to go.
In which case, how about this: when you run the Combo updater, you are given a choice of which drive you want to install it on. If I remember the sequence correctly (it's been a while since a fresh install), you run the installer, which transfers files to the target disk, and then reboot. The installation takes place on the target disk which then reboots again to begin the setup process. When the startup chime sounds the second time, use the option key to run Startup Manager and pick your flash drive to boot from again. If you already have the Combo updater on the flash drive, run it from there and pick the SSD as the target. When it's finished, if it doesn't start from the SSD, choose that as the Startup Disk (check to see that it says 10.8.3 in Preferences) and when it boots, start the Setup Assistant process using TM.
Or is the flash drive only an installer, meaning it doesn't actually have ML installed on it so you can't use it like an actual boot disk from which you can do normal boot disk things?

  • Satellite M110 - How to replace the HDD?

Have to replace my Hard drive as the original is f&%$ed.
I have tried to connect the original hard drive to my other laptop via a USB to Sata cable but it is not showing up. You can feel it spinning. I was able to do a HDD test on it and it failed in the Toshiba via a bootable CD. Since I can access the HDD to get to the recovery section, what is the best way to reinstall windows XP on it so I can use the original XP key on the bottom of the laptop. As I know that you usually have to have the right version or OEM copy of windows in order to use certain keys.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also would a Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD1600 8MB 160GB 2.5" SATA Hard Drive be suitable for the Toshiba as they both are SATA.

    Hi
Your posting is a little bit confusing... Which HDD you using in which notebook now?
If you want to install the OS on your old/new HDD, therefore you cant use a SATA to USB converter. Therefore you have to use it as internal HDD.
Furthermore a Western Digital HDD would be suitable due SATA port. :)

  • HT4904 The link for mid 2010 15/17 inch macbook pro is broken

mid 2010 15 inch leads to the early 2010 efi....is there another for mid 2010?

    Hey,
    Perhaps this is relevant ..........
    (1) I have a very late 17" macbook Pro.  (It is actually the somewhat rare 2.5 quad model.)  One of the very last ones made.
    (2) It comes with 1333 ram
    (3) I swapped in 1600 ram
    (4) IT IS ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN, THAT, THE MACHINE RUNS MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH FASTER when you have 1600 speed ram.
(Indeed, it runs 1600 / 1333 = 1.20x faster on all memory operations - it's just that simple and obvious.)
I did many tests back-and-fore swapping the slow and fast ram, and it is very, very obvious, the speed difference.  Most operations on computers are just memory bound - everything from startup to rendering and the like is quicker - obviously and clearly quicker - with faster ram.
    (5) I have had utterly no problems running the faster ram. It reports and runs the ram utterly normally, no problem.
    (6) These machines cost thousands, and ram cost a few dollars - there seems very little reason you wouldn't do this.
    (7) I do have one of the very last 17" mbp.  (It was "old new stock" - I bought it unused in March 2013.)  So, it's possible that OLDER 17" mbp will not run 1600 speed RAM.  But, I mean it costs like $100 to try, on a fantastic machine worth $1000s, so it's a huge win at low cost if it works.
I hope this helps future readers!!!  Cheers
