Replacing the main fan in a Dell Studio 1558 laptop.

Looking around online, it seems that my laptop model was doomed to fail, but so far I've encountered no problems besides the annual attempt by Windows 7 to disown my bluetooth module. Anyways, recently I started having serious issues that I tracked down to my RAM going bad. I replaced my old sticks with a new pair from Best Buy, upgrading my memory at the same time, since I went from 4 GB to 8 GB. They've worked just fine so far, but I also bought a pair of air dusters and cleaned out the innards that I could get to with the access panel off the back of my laptop, as well as getting the vents of course. Unfortunately, I doused my fan in a little too much dust when cleaning out the back vent, and now it's making a faint, high pitched whine. I suspect that it's going out, and any attempt at further air duster use makes it cycle between getting a cringingly loud high pitched whine to it, not working at all, or getting back to a soft whine that I can deal with. I know there's not really much choice, even though it's keep my system cool really well now, it has to go before it truly breaks.
How much would it cost to have Best Buy replace the fan? I bought this laptop through Dell directly back in August of 2010, though with how long it's been, where I got it may not really be a factor anyways. I know the fan is still available, both refurbished from Dell itself, and from various other places. The fan being replaced is the primary thing I need fixed or (more likely) replaced, but it would be nice to have an estimated cost break down of having that done in addition to getting the GPU fan checked (there's an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 video card in my laptop) and perhaps the GPU and CPU and so on professionally cleaned off in general, with the heatsinks checked and fresh thermal paste applied, if needed. I know about all that stuff, but I don't know nearly enough to trust myself to do it without screwing it all up. Even getting to the fan in my laptop is just not simple enough for me to be comfortable doing it without any training/experience in laptop maintenance. I need this laptop to last a couple more years, and a little preventative maintenance while it's all apart to get the fan replaced seems like a good idea in order to try and ensure that it does last.

From what I am reading in your topic you are stating
-You bought from Dell
-Do not have a current geek squad protection plan
The only option here to my knowledge would be this:
You need to have them to order this part
https://bestbuy.partsearch.com/Part/Dell/Dell/STUDIO1558/Dell/Dell/W956J/New.aspx
You need to also pay whatever their repair fee is for this service(it varies) I am unsure as to how much they charge for the repair service itself, but I know virus removal is normally $150-200.

  • Very high noise my Dell Studio 1558 laptop

Hi, it's me again I'm after installation and under configuration my Arch
    Ok, lets start.
My problem is very high noise my laptop. I think this is graphic card fault becouse while I used Ubuntu I had similar trouble. I think so becouse I was installed laptop-mode-tools and it's not helped. Now I am using open source driver xf86-video-ati.
    My graphic card is :
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series
Do You think installing ATI closed driver helps?
    Can be something other guilty?
I hope You understanding and help me.

Closed-source ATI driver will probaly help, but before this try to set profile in open-source ones. It fixed the problem for me.
    echo profile > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method
    echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile
If low causes instabilities and display problems for you, try mid.
For more info about this, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AT … MS_enabled
My favourite settings are low profile on battery and dynpm on AC.

  • Internal Microphone not working on Arch (Dell Studio 1558)

    Hello community,
I never managed to get the internal microphone of my Dell Studio 1558 to work with ArchLinux 64Bit. I know that the soundhip of Dell Notebooks is a bit tricky sometimes. I already tried several configurations in the alsamixer. Unfortunately there are not much possibilites. In this Screenshot you can see all mixers that are displayed in alsamixer. No matter what I do, the microphone will never work. Of course it would not work with pulseaudio, too.
I also tried several configurations in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
    options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dell
    options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dell
    options snd-hda-intel model=dell
To make sure the mic is not borken and works on Linux I booted a 32Bit Xubuntu 11.04 Live system. The Microphone worked there and Alsamixer gave me many more mixers there.
I don't know what info to provide... At least here is cat /proc/asound/cards. I doubt it's helpful though.
    cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xf0b00000 irq 43
    Help is appreciated Thanks already.

A long time ago I had a problem with the microphone in my Dell Studio 1737. When I finally got it working, I wrote down how I did it. Now I wish I had been more of a chatterbox... Anyway, here's my note:
    /etc/asound.state
    control.11 {
    value.0 true
    value.1 true
Hope you can make heads or tails of it.

  • What is the typical cost of replacing the cooling fan the laptop is HP Pavillion DV6 6165tx.

What is the typical cost of replacing the cooling fan in a
laptop computer ? (In India in Indian Rupees)?
The laptop is HP Pavillion DV6 6165tx. The cost means
    fan cost plus labour charges.

    Hi,
You should know this better than us. Normally part is around $40 (more or less) and labour can be $50 to $200. I would charge this for $400 (minimum) or free.
    Regards.

  • How to find and replace the main logic board on HP4600N Laser Printer.

Can anyone let me know how to replace the main logic board on my HP Laser 4600 N.  My printer was freezing up and in calling customer service, they informed me that the main logic board is going bad.  Now I have the part but no instructions on how to replace or where to find it on the printer.

A Google search may turn up a downloadable service manual for the Laserjet 4600.

  • I'm getting a Plugged in, not charging message after replacing the CPU fan

I just replaced the CPU fan on this notebook last night and finished it today. Its running perfectly at the moment.
The problem is the windows Task bar on my desktop says "Plugged in, not charging" when I mouse over the battery indicator there. I've tried many things to fix it, from uninstalling or disabling the drivers for the devices involved (the ACPI battery and AC adapter) under Windows' device manager, to swapping out with my spare battery.
I've also switched power plans on the off chance that could have been causing some kind of battery charging setting. This did not fix it. The AC adapter works. I've been running this notebook for about two hours now searching for a solution, it just won't charge the battery. I've not tried observed it enough but I believe it will charge while powered off, but not while on. The orange LED indicator by the AC adapter port glows when the machine is off, indicating that it is charging.
I have a feeling the whole "uninstall device drivers for the battery devices" idea is a thing of the past. Everything I found which suggested doing that also mentioned Windows Vista, which at this point in time is a relic (July 2015). When I was replacing the CPU fan, it did get frustrating at times but everything is intact apart from some case clips and a few other plastic case parts. I have reason to believe everything is connected too because its still powered on, meaning its getting power, but it isn't going in to the battery.
    Symptom summary:
    Batteries: OKAC Adapter: OK
    MOBO: PROBABLY OK
    ME: NOT OK   xD

  • How do I replace the main SATA HD in my macbook pro 9,2 with an SSD?

Can anyone direct me to photo directions for replacing the main HD in my macbookpro? Do I need a caddy to install a 2.5 SSD? I am not trying to replace the superdrive, so those caddies are not what I am looking for. CAn I just install the SSD in the same space left for the main SATA drive without using any adapter?

You can install the SSD in the same bay as your current HDD. You don't need a caddy.
Here's a link on iFixit.com with pictures of how to replace the HDD on a Macbook Pro. Same instructions apply when replacing the HDD with an SSD. I recently replaced a 320GB HDD in my early-2011 13" MBP with an SSD. Very easy to do.

  • Problems after Replacing the Main Logic Board in E280R

    Hi
I have just replaced the main logic board and FCal Disk Back plane in one of our E280Rs and now we cannot get any out put to a console (or to RSC card). So cannot get to the OK prompt or any diagonistic output. There are no errors according to the system lights although the RSC card is reporting faulty internal disks. Whether the disks or working or not we still should be be getting at least to the OK prompt.
The main logic board has the same part number as the one we replaced and we swapped the old SEEPROM chip to the new main Logic board
    Any Suggestions greatfully received
    Thanks
    Rob

    LowLuster is correct.
If Apple techs are talking about replacing the logic board, the costs of doing so is over half the cost of a newer IMac.
You maybe better off, if it is financially possible for you, to purchase a new or "newer" used or refurbished iMac.

  • Help needed to find a replacement HDD for Dell Studio 1558

    Hi,
My laptop HDD is 5 yr old and started to give a lot of read/write errors recently, I'm also finding very difficult to back the data from my laptop to my Seagate external HDD.When I copy the files to external HDD it gives I/O error. When multiple files are copied the fan runs at high speed makes lot of noise and the laptop.shuts down due to overheating. Due to this I got a chkdsk to scan and fix the errors on my external drive due to data copy failure taking additional 4hrs to scan for errors. My laptop.internal drive is Seagate momentus ST9500325AS 5400 rpm 500 GB,2.5" internal 8 MB cache SATA 3.0 GB/s drive and find that the drive is unavailable in my country.
I've just seen Seagate momentus Thin ST500LT012 500 GB 5400 RPM 16 MB Cache SATA 3.0 GB/s 2.5" internal Laptop/Notebook Hard disk on Amazon and would like to.know if I can replace my old with this
I was not sure to order this online since it reads thin I doubt if it would be slimmer than the old one and might not be an alternative.
I would also greatly appreciate if someone could suggest an alternative HDD preferably Seagate to replace for Dell 1558 studio
    Thanks in advance.

First try to make a Dell Backup and Recovery 16 GB Bootable USB using the latest version of Dell Backup and Recovery:
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/dell-backup-and-recovery-1-8-1-71/
The instructions are for Windows 8.1 but should be similar for Windows 7.
New drives will be slimmer. I recommend you replace the HDD with a SSD if you want a significant performance boost. Crucial SSDs include a spacer for seating into your system and guarantee compatibility:

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

  • I replaced the case fan on my XPS 8700 and things are much quieter.

I added a new case fan to one of our 8700s.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006ISKYPE
    Pro's - it is quiet
Con's - the color scheme is ugly, but I'm the only one that looks inside my case so it doesn't bother me.
The system is noticeably quieter as this rear case fan is much quieter than the OEM case fan.
With an updated PSU and graphics card, the only sound after boot is is the CPU fan, and the occasional clunk from the HDD.
The aftermarket PSU (Seasonic x-650) fan doesn't spin until it gets hot -- which is never so it is silent.
The graphics card fans (MSI GTX 760 TF) are very quiet.
Now, on to a quieter CPU cooler if that is possible with the Dell MoBo.

You can also go here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=/onlineassistant/submitAQuestion.vm&s... and submit a service request and just complain through that route.  Use the link NOT to service your lappy but to complain and make them do more work to contact you and send out a box and ship them back nothing, LOL - waste their shipping money.
Oh hey, maybe this is where you send the pile of dog poo.

  • HP ENVY 17T - J100 I NED TO REPLACE THE MAIN HDD TO SSD

I was just wanting to confirm that with the HP ENVY 17T J100 model can upgrade it's HDD to SSD? This model has the 1TB HDD. If I simply clone the HDD to an SSD of the same size.  will it work? Or is there more complex setup to get the raid working between SSD/SSD rather than SSD/HDD?
also i try with 120 ssd and it didnt work. if i change the main 1 TB HDD to 1 tb SSd can i use the recovery disks to return all the windows as factory with the SSD or not and why if not
    Thanks for your time!

    Hi @sherifmadkour
I understand you are looking at replacing your HDDs in your notebook with SSDs. I can help you with your question.
Please see the following for your notebook family which shows the supported components.
HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC HP ENVY TouchSmart m7 Notebook PC HP ENVY TouchSmart 17 Notebook PC Maintenan...
You can find the drive list in the product description section,  and also under the Hard Drive list, in Component replacement procedures.
Anything outside of that list would not have been tested with the other hardware, and so is unexplored territory. It is one of those things where if a device has different current requirements, it can put strain on the other hardware or an issue of driver compatibility.

  • I just installed the Firefox update in my Dell Studio laptop and now it will not start nor can it effect automatice repairs. What to do?

I had had problems with the Quick time feature that came with Nikon's Picture Project software and had to delete it. (Actually, the operating system deleted it and Picture project when it repaired itself by reverting to a previous configuration.) I noticed that Quick time was again installed when I updated Firefox. Since I can't get the machine up and running, I am at a loss as to how to remove Quick time if that is what needs to be done.

I suggest taking it back to Best Buy. Once it has been opened, Apple will not handle the phone. Best Buy or another 3rd party are your only choices. Best Buy probably made an error when replacing the screen. Understand they are not an authorized Apple Service Center.

    Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02642701.pdf
Supported wireless cards are listed in chapter 3 starting on page 24.
From the looks of it, you have a choice of the Atheros AR9280 802.11a/b/g/n 2x2 WiFi Adapter, or the
    Broadcom 4322 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN adapter.
You must only get one of the cards listed in the service manual and they MUST have the HP part # on them, or they WILL NOT work in your notebook.
Make sure you choose a card with the part # listed for your locale.

  • How do you replace the main start up drive?

My main drive is full and I want to replace it with a larger drive. How do you go about upgrading the hard drive as a start up disk?

Stick a new drive in a free bay.  Format it with Disk Utility.  And then use a backup utility like Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your current drive to the new drive essentially making them equivalent.  Then change Startup Disk system preferences to use the new drive and reboot (from your new drive) and continue on your merry way.
Keep the original as a backup.
