Replacing the router (and maybe the modem)
I've had loads of problems with my infinity. Essentially it is incredibly variable, going from the full 75MB/s DL to 0.37 MB/s DL which gets very annoying. A lot of my devices also tend to lose the wireless despite being in the same room as the modem/router. I know the problem doesn't lie with the devices as they work everywhere else, therefore I am looking to change the modem/router.
I purchased this one a while back it's the Netgear N300 Dual Band Modem-Router. I am just wondering if it is able to completely replace the modem and the router, or even just the router? I.e. will it work with infinity?
If it won't work, can anyone suggest an alternative router for me?
Many thanks

So we've spent a long time living with these problems and I got fed up and tried to get one of my friends to play about with the netgear modem-router i got, to get it working. unfortunately he couldn't link it up to actually get the internet, and he thought it was because the router wasn't actually recognising the modem and therefore picking up the internet.
I'm just wondering on the routers set-up bit, there's an area where it asks if my internet connection requires a password, is that where I put in the Homehub login details?
If i'm spouting rubbish point me in the direction of a step-by-step guide on what to do (i've tried searching myself but i don't think i know what i'm actually looking for!!) and i'll follow that to the letter and see if it works!!
Hi there,
First off, make sure that you're connecting the ethernet cable that's coming from the OpenReach modem to the port marked WAN on the back of your router. If you connect it to any of the other ports, it won't see the connection.
Another thing you need to do is in the username/password fields for your connection the login would be [email protected] and the password is anything you like, but most people just use "bt" - Just don't leave it blank, or it won't connect.
See below for a screenie (A picture tells a thousand words and all that)
I hope this info helps

I keep having to restart it every time I want to use it. Sometimes I have to restart it multiple times. The cord goes from the cable modem to the airport and then from the airport to the apple tv. I've replaced the apple TV and I've replaced the modem and the problem persists. I assume it has to be the aiport? But the wifi from the airport works fine.
I tried bypassing the airport and going straight from the modem to the apple tv and it wouldn't work. That makes no sense to me.
I had a friend over to try and figure it out and he couldn't. Any idea what could be the problem??The Ethernet cable from the modem should be connected to the AirPort's WAN (circle of dots) port and a second Ethernet cable should be connected between the AirPort's LAN (opposing arrows) port and the Ethernet port on the Apple TV. Is this the case?
If so, what is the make & model of the modem that the AirPort is connected to. Also what is the exact model of both the AirPort and the Apple TV? -
Cisco 877W router and external ADSL modem
Cisco 877W router and external ADSL modem
In order to support ADSL2+ on a pre ADSL2+ router and in preparation for a later migration to BT infinity I am trying to configure the Router using an external adsl2+ modem appropriately.
The original configuration had 3 ports configured as one (internal lan) vlan and bridge group together with one wireless sub-interface, the remaining port configured a second vlan and bridge group with a second wireless sub- interface. The Dialer was a member of the second bridge group. This way the second wireless interface and associated bridge group provided a kind of DMZ for outbound access.
The configuration I am attempting is similar the lan ports remain the same, but port 0 as a member of the vlan and bridge group (now a pppoe client) associated with one of the wireless sub interfaces as per above. The ATM interface is downed. This nearly works except that if the wireless subinterface on this bridge group is configured the dialer no longer dials giving a 'no dialer string' error. If I do not configure that wireless sub interface all works well.
If anyone is interested to look I would appreciate any comments. I enclose a sanitised config in which you will note the 'commented out' wireless subnet interface (in red).

endHi Jody,
Apologies delay in replying. I have done the following:
Made two of the FE ports vlan1,BVI1 (for LAN traffic)
Left one port as VLAN10 as the pppoe client conected to the externalmodem
Made the last port VLAN10 as well and gave it an IP addess as for a DMZ client.
I have DHCP configured to serve the DMZ addresses.
This all works for LAN clients and also works for a client attachedto that physical DMZ port.
When I added a dot11radio sub interface into VLAN 10 the wireless client did not get an IP lease. Everything else continued to work.
I had never thought about this before, but if a dot11radio interface is on the same vlan (but not being part ofa bridge group) why are DHCP broadcasts not propogating to all the vlan members as I would have expected. I recognise that this isa limit in my understanding.
If I then made VLAN10 a member of a new Bridge Group, I lost WAN connectivity as per original posting.
I cannot add another VLAN due to the 2 vlan limit in this image.
Finally regarding your comment about giving it what it wants, what exactly did you have in mind. The dialer already has a dial string parameters configured.
Think I am about to give upon this.

Help! Replaced Verizon router and suddenly my 2 Apple TVs won't accept my Apple ID
I have two Apple TVs that were working just fine, but I replaced my 11 year old Verizon FIOS router today, and I have everything connected and working, except the Apple TV's which refuse to accept my Apple ID as correct. I have Home Sharing turned on on all my computers, but on the Apple TV configuration screen I cannot get past where it wants the Apple ID put in. I even went online and CHANGED my password, restarted iTunes, turned off Home Sharing and then back on, restarted computers, router, and have been using the remotes to type in my Apple ID and new password literally dozens of times and it says my password or user ID cannot be found or is incorrect; I know it is not incorrect....Help! One thing I noticed is the Apple TV in the configuration screen seems to have a strange IP address.....169. something or other instead of 192.168 >>> like everything else. I even tried changing that manually to what was showing for the Apple ID on my router screen but that didn't work either. We have not changed any connections on the TV, Apple TVs.....just the router replacement. Because it's a new router, it has a new network name and password, but I can't get to the point where I can put that in (tried selecting network automatically), because everything I try to do I get stopped by the Apple ID screen.

EA6700 won't connect to the modem
Hi experts!
N00b here! Since last night, I'm having a problem with my router EA6700: It won't connect to the broadband modem. If I plug my modem straight to my laptop, no problem. But, if I plug the modem to the internet port (yellow port), the activity lights go dead and, of course, I don't have internet connection. However, the link light on my router and on my modem is light up.
I've tried to power cycle the modem and then the router, no good. Tried to reset the router settings and configure everything back, the Smart Wi-Fi setup gets stuck when looking for an internet connection. Tried new cables, no good. I downloaded the latest firmware (which I was already running) to overwrite the current firmware and then, reset the router settings, same thing. Tried to change the router IP address, still nothing. I cloned the MAC address from my laptop, just in case my ISP had filtered anything, still nothing.
Any ideas? Has anyone came across with this issue before?
Thanks
Ariel

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6 is recommended.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm and http://cognitiveanomalies.com/cisco-nat-how-nat-works/. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.

Router config for console modem access
We're upgrading 2500 series routers with 2811's in several remote sites, and we have preferred modem access to be connected to the console port as opposed to AUX, in order to see boot-up and diagnostics we wouldn't otherwise see. Our only issue is that we aren't replacing the modems out there and some aren't connecting correctly. We obviously need AA turned on, and also be able to continue a session if the cable is moved to another device's console port (like the local switch.) If we were using the AUX port, I know autoconfigure discovery and other commands might fix this; but we'd like to keep the modem connected to the router console port. Are there any router commands I can use?
If I understand correctly these modems were connected on the Aux port of the 2500 & now you intent to connect then on the console port of the 2800, what vendor modems are in use?
The below doc has info on router console port configuration, we will need to configure the correct initialization string on the modem based on the modem vendor (the AT commands will change as per the description based on the modem vendor).

Wrt54gs router to internet cable modem connection drop
With the wrt54gs router set at auto dhcp and mostly on default settings, after some time of inactivity the connection between the router and internet cable modem drops out. That is, when there is no activity (no transmission to/from internet) the connection drops and the wireless connections shows "local only." Any suggestions/comments on why this is so? Thanks!
Have you tried to connect the Modem to the computer and checked if you are facing the same problem or not?
On your Router setup page, change the MTU size from AUTO to Manual and change the Size from 1500 to 1350 and click on Save Settings..... Then click on the Wireless tab and below Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Click on the sub tab under Wireless "Advanced Wireless Settings"
Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect... -
My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?
Thanks for your response
Let me give the history - I started with an Apple Express being fed thru a D-Link EBTR 2310 cable Router from an RCA DCM315 Modem (Pure). Comcast service all the way.
Got the 1st generation TC in 2008 and merely replaced the Airport Express with the TC. Worked ok
A year or two ago I did try removing the modem and feeding the TC directly from the modem. Resulted in the same condition I have now - Continuous flashing amber on the TC. So I put the router back in the chain.
Some time later, at the recommendation of a Comcast rep, I replaced the router with (a Belkin F5D 5231) to see if speed and dropout problems would be improved. I thought it helped some at the time but now I am not so sure.
Last week I decided to see if a new modem would help with download speeds. So I got another pure cable modem (Motorola SB 6121- high on the Comcast recommended list).
Got up and running easily with Comcast help and with the modem connected directly to a computer.
Next I put the TC in the link and again could not get past the TC continuing to flash amber. Although I did get connected to the internet with this configuration I lost connection two both of my printers - one connected by USB and the other wirelessly to the TC. Again everything works fine when I put the Belkin router back in the system.
However with the router in there, the modem shows the downstream connection to be 10/100 ethernet speed. (Modem light changes color for indicating speeds.}
I have gone thru all of the combinations of powering down/ up, but all stays the same.
I can live with what I have but something still doesn’t seem right.
Thanks again -
Just feeling my way into using a Time Capsule as the main networking device for two macbooks, two iPhones and occasional vistors including an iPad. Right now the basic ADSL router provides, internet conection, Firewal, DHCP and NAT. The Time Capsule provides WiFI and backup to the MacBooks. The MacBooks and iOS devices all use WiFI and a couple of media devices use ethernet (a hub is part of the network).
Would it be better (i.e. more effective in performance or management) to limit the router as much as possible so for instance turning off DHCP and NAT then reconfiguring the Time Capsule to do that - sort of part way to a situation where the router would be replaced by a modem? Or am I just wasting effort to no good purpose? There is no simple.. yes or no to your question.
Often modems cannot be bridged.. or if they can the TC does not have the ability to provide the correct services to connect.
What is the broadband type and what is the modem router you are talking about?
Generally the supplied modem is perfectly adequate to the speed capability of the service provided.
In some cases we do say bridge it.. eg alot of cable modem routers supplied here are very poor, Have terrible NAT tables and pathetic abilities.. so we encourage them to be bridged or replaced. Most DSL type modem routers seem to be ok.. and are easily replaced anyway.
Time Capsules are far from being giants in the router world btw.. they have absolute min of controls possible. Lots of good things might be supplied on your normal modem which are missing in the TC. eg QoS. Decent logging, NAT table connection lists.. along with all the other lists.
Overall the gain.. I think for most people will be small.. try it out.. that is the only way to know. -
Time Capsule used as router attached to Comcast Modem. Wireless stops working with no light showing and Link indicator on modem off.
All I have to do is unplug the TC and plug it back in.
TC cycles up and green light appears as well as the Comcast modem operates correctly.
TC 4 yrs old. How do I correct?I have the latest and greatest Time Capsule and Comcast. Here is the weird thing. If I have one network set up, then occasionally that network will wedge. If I set up a 5GHz and a 2.4GHz network, then one of them (usually the 5GHz) will wedge. I saw this with a previous Time Capsule, Apple said call Comcast. They checked it out and said it was Apple's problem. Apple said maybe you Time Capsule is bad, so I bought a new one. The problem persists.
Tonight it's not complely wedged, but super slow. The 5GHz network is getting 0.45Mb/s while the 2.4GHz network is getting 17Mb/s. Both are coming in from the same Comcast cable modem. Apparently the Time Capsule treats them as separate.
Is it the cable modem or the Time Capsule. I am betting on the Time Capsule, since rebooting it fixes the problem. Resetting the cable modem does not.
Apple is NO HELP at all. They say reset the Time Capsule. Did that fix it? Yes. Problem solved! No, problem not solved. It will happen again in a few hours.
Here's the traceroute. Note what happens a few hops away. At hop number 7 the ping times go up by a factor of 200.

My MacBook Pro won't connect to the Internet via wifi but it worked fine on ethernet cord...I tried running diagnostic but it didn't work:(((( it happen every time if I restart the modem and/or router.. Any idea how to fix this?
Hello Rattisate,
Sorry to hear you are not able to connect to Wi-Fi on your MacBook Pro. I would be concerned about this too. You can find information on how to troubleshoot this in the following article:
Troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues in OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628
Follow the steps in the section labeled, "Symptom: My Mac does not connect to the Internet."
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.
Best,

I recently replaced my dead airport router with a Netgear91-5g router and synced it successfully to my Lexmark Pro 915 printer and my computer; yet when I try to print wirelessly I get the message: "printer not connected; printer offline". Lexmark support verified that my printer was connected to the new router and the problem was with the computer's printer configuration and they could reconfigure it online if I paid for their "Premium Support" services ($119 for one year, 3 fixes). I declined, feeling sure that this is something I could do if I knew how. Could it be an incompatability issue with OS 10.8.3?
You saved me $$$ that I can ill afford on my fixed income. I was very unhappy with the "support" from Lexmark... what a rip off! Thank you dwb!

I have a Cisco System3 modem, feeding an Airport Extreme, which connects wirelessly a Timecapsules and an Airport Express both of which extend the network, ie send out more WiFi signal. The system worked well for a long time, say a year and a half and then it started dropping out. All the lights on the modem and airport Extreme stay green, but the other two components are blinking yellow. I've tried limiting the channels, but there are few sources in my neighborhood. I have tried resetting the Extreme which worked for a week and now it's back to its random disconnect behavior. I have read some of these blogs and no one seems to know what to do, especially not Apple. Do I just get another router or what? What do I lose if I use a non Apple router and what would you suggest?
Welcome to the discussion area, Junkcanoe!
I don't have a setup like yours, but might be able to offer some assistance.
Basically I have two jacks, a TC and an AE and I'd like to create a roaming network. Both of them are set to bridge mode with the same SSID, WPA2 security, same password, etc.
This would be the normal way to set up a roaming network, but the wild card here is that we don't know anything about how the main router that supplies the ethernet connections (valid IP addresses) to the condos might be configured.
For example, most apartments, hotels, etc that provide ethernet jacks usually limit the number of devices that can connect to each jack. Hotels tend to limit this to one or two devices. I counted six devices that you say will work properly plus a few more. Since you have two separate ethernet jacks, you may be looking at a situation where each jack is allocated a total of 4 devices, or valid IP addresses.
The bottom line here is that we won't be able to make much progress until we know more how the main router there has been configured. Is it possible for you to ask the complex manager (who will probably need to ask the IT guy) how many devices are allowed to connect per ethernet jack? Another way to ask the same question is how may valid IP addresses will each ethernet jack allow?
If you can, could I ask you to perform an experiment? Rather than have both the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule each connect to a separate ethernet jack, can you temporarily move one device near the other and connect them together using an ethernet cable? (Or, use a long ethernet cable if you don't want to move either device) LAN <-> port on one to LAN <-> port on the other. In other words, you'll only be using one of the ethernet ports in the condo for this experiment.
Any difference in performance or number of devices allowed to connect?

I just bought a airport wireless route and I have a time warner modem. My problem is my modem is not connecting to my apple airport router. What do I need to do?
Power cycle the cable modem.. you may try leaving it off 5min.. might be enough.. sometimes you need 15min or even longer.. Followed by power cycle of the AE.
Nothing else should be connected to the modem.. except the router that will get the public IP as they only hand out ONE>
