Replacing Westell 2100 Modem with 6100

I am next to clueless with this stuff, so be kind. I've been having to reboot my 6 year old 2100 at least once a week to get my max DL speed back. Verizon sent me a 6100 to replace it in hopes that it might solve the problem. I swapped all the connections, but the Internet light on the 6100 stays red. What do I need to do to get the 6100 up and running? It came with no instructions. Do I need to call Verizon and have them enable it or whatever? Thanks.

Strange thing, I always had a Westell 6100 with my netgear wireless for 3yrs now.  Went from 1meg to 3meg with no modem reboot issues but when i got to the 7meg plan and now the 10/15meg plan, I have to reboot my westell like clock work almost every 7 days...no one knows why and I have not changed anything but the plan upgrade. I suspect V is doing something with the line regularly.  But the thing is its not a nightly or off hours issue...it could be AM, noon or early PM when this happens but the sequence seems to be every 7th day or so.  It happened today for the first time on my new 10/15 meg plan.  I have a new verizon 7500 modem/wireless combo that i may try to see if it fixes that.  But otherwise never had issues with the westell 6100/netgear combo i have on 24x7.

  • I am FRUSTRATED! My goal is to create a wireless network using an iMac, a Westell 2100 modem (and router)

I started with a PC, the Westell 2100 modem (also a router) and the Linksys WRT54G. I set it up according to instructions I found on the Internet, and it worked fine for YEARS!!! Then, I switched to an iMac. After problems with the setup, I found help on the Internet, and got it working. It has been a long time since then, and I have had to disconnect things, and I do not remember how to set it up. I have searched the Internet, but cannot find a solution. I have searched the community, and followed some instructions here, but I have had no success. I know the following:
The Westell 2100 works as it should. I can connect directly to my computer and access the Internet.
The Linksys WRT54G has not been damaged.
At one point, I had set the SSID and had a WEP/WAP key that is HIDEOUSLY long. Here are some more tidbits: WPAPSK TKIP.

  • Is it reasonable to replace Qwest Pk5000 modem with "Time Capsule" to serve as my modem/local Wifi/backup device?

I am both new and old.  That is, I am an old guy who is relatively new to Mac and to forums.  I could use some advice, please.  I believe I want to buy Apple's "Time Capsule" (TC) to back up my 1 week old MacBook Pro and my old Win 7 Laptop.  Currently I have Qwest as my provider.  They have installed their ActionTek PK5000 modem.
Question, can I, or better yet, should I replace their modem with TC?  I plan to use a wireless network for my home (iPad, wireless printer) and my kids when they come to visit.  I believe Qwest won't support TC ... understood, but would it work? and would it be the smart thing to do?  If so, would TC need to configured manually or would air port utitlity handle the details?  Thanks for any advice. -- tom

That's possible, but a bit tricky.  Apple's Time Machine software will back up your Mac to the TC, but you'll have to find a Windows app to back up the laptop.  I don't do Windoze, but understand the WinClone app may work for that.
Further, mixing Time Machine backups on a TC's internal HD causes some conflicts.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.
Question, can I, or better yet, should I replace their modem with TC?
No.  The Time Capsule is a wireless router with a hard drive.  It does not contain a modem.
Usually, you plug the TC into the modem.  The TC then provides the network.
But that modem is also a router (ie, provides a network), so you'll need to either turn its router function off, or configure the TC to join the existing network.
If so, would TC need to configured manually or would air port utitlity handle the details?
Either way, you use Airport Utility to configure the TC.

  • WRT54G and Westell 2100

This problem may have previously been answered, but I can't find exactly my problem. I currently have a wired desktop, DSL through Bellsouth, Westell 2100
modem connected by USB. My desktop has no ethernet port.  The modem has one
ethernet connection and one usb. I bought a laptop to use in other parts of the house and a Linksys WRT54G router. I cannot access the internet from laptop wired or not, but the router has a full signal.  I switched the modem to bridged mode, but had no internet on either desktop or laptop....everything is now set back to default.
I was told I could not have internet on both at the same time. Is there a way around this?  If not, I still need to be able to access internet with wireless laptop but that's not happening either.
    Help! Someone!

you need to make sure your westell and router are configured properly. there are issues with at&t/bellsouth westell's and linksys working together properly. you can find that info over here, http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6323 i use the same exact setup you do and once i followed this, it worked perfectly. hopefully that will help you.
well, you go have fun with that.

  • Westell 2200 Modem, should I upgrade?

To all who can see this, I am running a Westell 2200 Modem with a Linksys Wireless-G BEFW11S4 Router.  Lately, probably within the past 6 months, we've been experiencing a multitude of Lost Connections.  The way it happens makes it seem like it's bottlenecking....everything is going so well, then it starts to plummet and within a few seconds, Download and Uploads show a 0 transfer and I have to go reset the Modem and Router.  This can happen as frequently as 8 times in just one afternoon, or as rare as once a week.  I cannot figure out why though, it's not like I'm online maxing out my bandwidth, it just stops.
I was told that our Transfer Rate was upped from 1.5 Mbps to 3 Mbps, yet I cannot get downloads of higher than about 286 Kbps and Uploads of 127 Kbps.  The Router was a replacement for an identical one that died about a year ago, but the Modem I've had since I started the DSL Service within the last 4 or 5 years.
My question is, should I get a new Modem and if so, what are some recommendations?  I know the Router is fine because all my Pc's still read a Network connection, they just can't get online.  I would also like to know if there is a way to get Verizon to confirm what my actual Transfer Rate / Allowance is, because I can't get anyone on the phone to assist me with that question.
I attempted to Post this in the Stickied Thread up top but it won't let me for some reason, so I'm making a new Post.  Sorry.

tazhyngarth, I just replaced my westell 2200 with a GEU003AD3 from buy.com.  I paid for it, verizon would not send me a replacement modem (although I did not try that hard...).  This fixed my drop outs and slow transfer speeds.  Although, your problem seems a little different than mine.  The drop outs were sudden, and the reduced speeds were more consistent.  Let us know if you get a free one and what the policy is.  good luck..

  • Replacing Westell 6100 modem with Netgear Genie

Good day. I'm replacing Westell 6100 modem with a Netgear Genie. I need the following data to complete hookup. Thanks.
    Netgear Broadband ADSL2+ Modem (DMP111SP)
    IP Address
    Subset Mask
    Default gateway
    Preferred DNS Server
    Alternative DNS Server

Since you're plugged into the Westell, use http://192.168.1.1/ to log into the modem. From there, see if your modem shows something along the lines of "Routed Bridge" mode or if it shows "PPPoE" as the connection type. If PPPoE, follow the post I mentioned above. The same goes with Routed Bridge mode. Worst case scenario, call Verizon and have them ensure your Westell is configured correctly if you cannot get online with the Westell, and from there we'll see how the Netgear needs to be configured.
Also, what may have happened here is your Netgear's IP address could have changed. You will want to open up a Command Prompt Window (Start > search for the program "cmd.exe" or go to Start > Run > enter in cmd.exe) and run the command ipconfig. Default Gateway should give the IP of the router you're attached to in a home network.

  • Westell ProLine 6100 DSL modem with generic wireless router

I am planning to purchase the Starter Verizon high speed internet plan.  It comes with a free Westell ProLine 6100/6110 DSL modem.  The combined modem and wireless router is $55.  I have a wireless router (Linksys and Cisco).  Can I use the Linksys or Cisco wireless router with the Westell ProLine DSL modem, or will I have compatibility problems?  Thanks.

To use that modem with a router, I point to:
    URL: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13600
Location: All DSLR (dslreports.com) FAQs » Verizon Online DSL FAQ » Hardware » How do I use a router with the Westell 6100?
    ^^
    Otherwise, you will...
#1 NOT be able to go anywhere online because of Double NAT.
#2 Or if you can go some where online then..
..For example: If you want to allow users from the net to connect to your computer, you can't just portforward in your generic wireless router. You must also portforward in the Westell 6100. (Called Double NAT Forwarding)
Points to: portforward.com -> Other Guides -> Port Forwarding Behind Two Routers?
    ^^
I will leave this up to you on what you want to do. Good luck.

  • Frustrated trying to set up a wireless network with Bellsouth Fastaccess's Westell Wirespeed modem.

Today, about 6 hours ago in fact, I came home with a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. It took me a while to get a grasp on how to connect it. I had no network port on the back of my PC, as far as I knew, and I had been connecting my Westell Wirespeed modem to my PC via USB for years. In the end I ended up spending an hour digging up the old Ethernet cable that came with the modem, and finally managed to do everything the Router setup program asked of me.
One hour after restarting multiple times, experimenting with different orders of plugging in things, and countless resettings of the Router AND the modem, it finally set up the network. It ran for an hour.
One of my cats ran behind my computer, jarring one of the cords and causing the PC to turn off. It happens twice or thrice a year when they get rowdy. When I jiggle all the plugs back into place and turn on my computer, the connection was dead! Gone! And there was nothing in my Program Files that said "Start Linksys Network" or anything convenient like that. I suppose that would be too easy, right? And my internet didn't work either! So with no other choice, I opened up the installation program again - there was no trace of any sort of folder or application on my PC linked to the router. In fact, as far as I can see, I still have no way to get into ANY sort of router-related application aside from the install CD.
So I stuck that back in there.
I've spent the last three hours grueling over this thing. I connect it all before turning the PC on. Nothing. I disconnect everything and plug it all back in meticulously step by step according to the program. Nothing. The install program always gets through the PC checking, and lets me fill in the PPOE (or whatever) information. As it tries to update the router configuration, though, it tells me one of two things.
1 ) If I have just done a reset of the router, it gets to 99% in the router configuration progress bar before telling me the 'router configuration failed'.
2 ) If I exit the setup program and reopen it, I get a generic "So and so has caused an error in 4746545x48345675 (or some other random number)," and asks me to either Cancel or Debug.
My hands are sore and I'm stressed to the limits. I bought a laptop a week ago for the sole purpose of alleviating the battles my kids have over the only source of internet in the house, but it's just been sitting there. I'm really at the end of my wits. Between the errors that don't tell you what went wrong and the perfectly-connected router that keeps pretending it's not connected, I'm just about ready to return the laptop.

This happened to me when I was setting up the wireless router for a friend.  The issue is with the Westall modem.  You need to go in and setup the "bridge" option on the westell modem.  The link below gives directions or you can call bellsouth dsl support (this is how I learned about it).
    http://help.bellsouth.net/bellsouth/asp/contentview.asp?isbrowse=true&sprt_cid=3f993409%2Ddff7%2D422...
    Good luck
    Solution:
    Method 1 - Hard Reset
Restore the modem to default settings by pressing the Reset button on the back of the modem and holding it for 3 seconds. (Bridged mode is the default setting for the Westell).
After the modem regains sync, it is in Bridged mode. Do not attempt to surf into the modem as surfing into the modem will enable the Easy Login page and convert the modem from bridged mode to a PPP mode.
    Method 2 – Bridged Mode
Access the Westell interface using http://192.168.1.254 or http://launchmodem.
Click on the Broadband DSL Line button.
    Click on the Protocols button
Select the radio button to the left of Option 2 (Bridge)
Click the save button. Once the modem has restarted it is in bridge mode.
    ALL STEPS COMPLETE

  • I cannot get my AirPort Extreme to work with my new BT fibre modem which has replaced my Draytek modem.

I use to use a Draytec modem with my AirPort Extreme. All worked perfectly and the internet connection was configured as connect using PPPoE. Now I have a replacement mode fro BT to allow a fibre connection I can no onager get on the internet. What do I need to change. Do I need to change the internet connection on the AirPort Extreme to DHCP.

Yes, I do think it is no longer using PPPoE.. but the IP is configured to the fibre to ethenet or vdsl port.
You might need to ring the ISP and get them to give you details.
Anyway it is easy to try.. plug the Extreme WAN port to the new modem and test with dhpc. Check that you get a public not private IP address.

For a special application I need to replace the basic "data/fax" modem with a "voice/data" modem.  Where can I find detailed specifications for size of the basic CX 11256 modem so I can look for a replacement.

Hello gerhard38. I understand you are looking for specifications on your modem. These are the best results I could locate on the Internet: http://www.conexant.com/Product/modems/legacy/soft/CX11256/Pages/default.aspx
If these specifications are lacking for you, I would contact the manufacturer and inquire about the exact specifications.

  • Time Capsule: Port Forwarding Issue and DHCP with Westell 6100g Modem

Ok two issues as of right now, but more down the road i think... Anyways, number one, i would like to be able to backup my computer using time machine and my time capsule.. Right now it works properly when inside the local network, was wondering if there was a way to backup when outside the network... i travel a lot and always have my macbook pro with me.. Also, i have a USB hard drive connected to the usb port on back of time capsule but its not showing up anywhere... is that only for printers??? that's not such a big deal, but would be nice to have access to that hard drive from multiple computers... OK so part two of my issues is, i have a WESTELL 6100g modem for DSL verizon service, which is crappy, but that's besides the point, it is a modem/router, so i have the time capsule connected directly to that westell.. the westell only has one Ethernet port, so that's wired to time capsule and then my computers are connected wirelessly and wired through the capsule. It seems that the westell is distributing the IP's and is controlling the port forwarding and what not.. I have tried a few things to give control to the time capsule but that didnt work.. i followed these directions on the web page http://www.dslreports.com/faq/vz/4._Hardware#13600 but it didnt work properly, i couldn't log onto the web at all.. Maybe im doing something wrong.... Anyways, what i really want to do is control everything that the westell is controlling right now with the time capsule... i want to give out IP's and also control port forwarding with the capsule.. Any way of getting that accomplished would be AWESOME... I'm somewhat intelligent when it comes to computers so i should understand everything you are talking about... please help!!!

If you have Back to my Mac (available online service from Apple's MobileMe), then you can perform the following actions with your Time Capsule remotely,
    1. Remote disk access to both the Time Capsule disk and a compatible disk connected via the Time Capsule's USB ports.
    2. Remote configuration.
Also, i have a USB hard drive connected to the usb port on back of time capsule but its not showing up anywhere... is that only for printers???
    Printer, hub, or compatible disk.

and for USB disk please see the following Apple support kb

  • Westell 2100 Stopped Working

All right, I've been trying to fix this thing myself, but I've only become more confused.  I'm no computer expert, so I'll have to be walked through any suggestions if it comes to manually changing an TCP/IP or something.
I've had this Westell 2100 in my service for years with no problems, then suddenly, it stopped working!  I went through the usual, turn of the modem, wait, turn back on, hold reset button for 30 sec, etc.  But no luck.  The Ethernet light is solid green, the power is solid green, but the ready light is blinking slowly.  Apparently that means it's trying to connect, but I can leave it there for an hour with no changes.  I thought maybe it was a problem with the phone cable, so I switch to a new one.  Still no changes.
Then I came here and saw a post somewhere saying that service to Westell 2100 was discontinued?  Does that mean I'm not getting service simply because of my modem and I need to buy a new one?  I want to make sure before I go out and buy one, only to find out it won't work either.
I don't know if this means anything but, we asked Verizon to stop our landline phone.  I'm pretty sure the modem was still working for a little while afterward, but I can't remember.
Any help, please?  I miss my home internet connection.

My frist thought would also be your service disconnection. I had a simmilar experince happen with another compeny many years ago.
However if by chance that isnt the cause. Than then I would  suspect one of a few things. The top ones is ether the jack went bad(I seen this happen on a computer I worked on) or my brother had his modem go bad  despite the fact he just got it. Then of course there's the chance the line was damaged or a filter messed up(Assumming your using filters).
    Hope this helps.

  • Westell 6110f modem & Netgear N900 R4500 router

    Hi!
I have a Westell 6110F modem and Belkin F5d9230 router that works fine. I want to replace the router with a Netgear N900 R4500 router. I set it up like the Belkin, but it won't talk to Verizon. Right now I have the new router plugged into the old router and have Internet access on the new router. I'd prefer to have just one (I need to stream some music to a couple of places and the Belkin doesn't handle it). Can anyone help?
    Extech

#1 With the Belkin router connected to the Westell and it is online, go to the LAN IP of the Belkin router.
#2 In there, the WAN IP Address of the router should be the same IPv4 Address that you see at http://www.pcwintech.com/myip
#3 If it is not, then your modem combo is not in bridge-bridge mode (configured to handle the public IP)
#4 As how to put the modem combo into bridge-bridge mode, see
    http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13600
#5 If you have any questions as how to do that, please post.
#6 If the WAN IP Address is the same at step 2:
    a) in the Belkin router go to Connection Type under WAN.
    b) In the connection type is DHCP...
#1 In the Belkin router go to back to the main page of the Belkin router.
For example if you are at http://192.168.2.1/wan.html, go to http://192.168.2.1
#2 Record down the WAN MAC Address.
#3 In the Netgear router, you will need to spoof/clone that Address.
I believe the feature exist in the Netgear at Advanced -> Setup -> WAN Setup
