Replacing Windows 2012 foundation
I have an old industrial application running on Windows Server 2003, If I buy a server with Windows 2012 foundation, can I use windows server 2013 instead of the original
Hi,
Windows Server 2012 Foundation is full-featured 64-bit version of Windows Server. You need to determine whether your computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows Server 2003 operating system. Some application running on 32-bit
Operating System cannot compatible with 64-bit Operating system.
In addition, Windows Server 2012 Foundation is only available through original equipment manufacturers. You cannot obtain installation media for Windows Server 2012 Foundation at retail locations. Besides, upgrade of Windows Server 2012 Foundation is not
supported. Before you do that, please refer to the article about Windows Server 2012 Foundation:
Introduction to Windows Server 2012 Foundation

Hi all,
I have read all the documents in windows 2012 it saying windows 2012 Foundation edition supports 1 processor whereas essential edition supports 2 number of processors and data center edition supports 64 no of processor.
My question is---- is it logical processor or physical processor?? Is it really possible to install 64 no of physical processors in single motherboard.
Thanks in advance.Hi,
In addition, you can refer to the information below from
this link:
Windows Server 2012 x64 with Hyper-V Enabled
Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition supports up to 64 sockets and up to 320 logical processors
Windows Server 2012 without Hyper-V Enabled
Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition supports up to 64 sockets and up to 640 logical processors

Replace Windows 2003 DC with Windows 2012 R2 Foundation
Hi
We are a small office (7 users) that currently have one Windows 2003 Server configured as a domain controller running DNS,DHCP and file services for users. All computers (7) are joined into local domain. All users have mapped drives to 2003 server shares
and redirected (offline) folders for my-documents configured.
Due to an old hardware, we decided to buy a new server with Windows 2012 R2 FOUNDATION licence. For our company I thing this will be the best choice, since Foundation has CAL's 'included' in license, and for our requirements will be more than enough.
Foundation server limit is that server must be the root domain controller in a domain that has no trusts at the root of the forest. My question is how can we 'replace' old server with a new one (what are the steps) ? I'm thinking the following scenario:
- install server and promote it to a DC with a new local domain name in the new forest
- copy all data from old server the the new one
- put all computers out of old domain and put them back into the new domain that is running on 2012 foundation.
- power off old server
Most of the work will be with computers, that need to be reconfigured to a new domain ?
Is this the right approach, are there any other (better) options ?
Just thinking... Is it possible to join 2012 Foundation into existing domain, than transfer all roles from old server to the new one, and at the end demote old server and power it off (I know this is standard approach in Windows Server Standard editions
Thank you in advance
MikeHi,
There is no necessary to create a new domain. we can add the new DC to your current domain, then transfer FSMO, related settings and main service roles to the new DC.
Reference the link provided by Alceryes to add Windows Server 2012 R2 to your current domain. and then reference link below for
Active Directory Migration from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012 R2:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/canitpro/archive/2014/04/02/step-by-step-active-directory-migration-from-windows-server-2003-to-windows-server-2012.aspx
Besides, for DHCP migration from 2003 to 2012, you can reference:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/canitpro/archive/2013/04/29/step-by-step-migration-of-dhcp-from-windows-server-2003-to-windows-server-2012.aspx
For DNS migration, install DNS server role on Windows Server 2012 R2, and configure it as secondary DNS servers to the old DNS servers. Do replication, once completed, change it from secondary to primary. Remove old server and also clear their record in
new DNS. Checklist: Migrate a DNS Server(also applied for WS 2012 R2), for your reference:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755303.aspx
It is better to do a test lab and backup related data before migration in your current environment.
Best Regards,
Eve Wang

Having a problem the forums and Google have been unsuccessful in helping me with. Server is Windows 2003 R2, migrating to Windows Server 2012 foundation. Have tried the AD Migration on the new 2012 Foundation server both as a standalone server
and a domain server member before running the migration. I get the following error:

Unfortunately I had already disabled the NIC's on both hosts. They currently remain disabled. I've just tried turning off IPv6 as well and no luck.
PortQry came back fine (I think) :)

Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 Supports Windows 2012 R2 ?
Hello,
I have a requirement to install Self Service Portal on one dedicated Server and found that Both the Web Content Server and SharePoint Web Parts on One Computer. I want to use Microsoft Sharepoint 2010 Foundation Server as it is free.
My query is this - Does Microsoft SharePoint 2010 supports Windows 2012 R2 OS.
Below link has a details till Windows 2012 Server but not with Windows 2012 R2
http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=24983
Please answer.
Thanks,
AnkurHI,
for installing SharePoint Server 2010 Fondation on Windows Server 2012 R2 Version, you Need the SP2 for SharePoint fondation.
for confirmation see this link:
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2724471/?wa=wsignin1.0
thanks

I found than Inplace update from 2012 to 2012 R2 are supported. I also found 2012 R2 will support SharePoint Foudation 2010 with SP2 (4.0.7116.5000).
But I cannot find if we perform an Inplace update from a Windows 2012 Server running SharePoint 2010 (Sp2) to R2 will be successful.
As anyone done that?
Thanks.
Real
Réal DoréHi ,
On Windows Server 2012 R2, Microsoft supports only the SharePoint Server 2010 SP2 slipstream media configuration and not the RTM version of that configuration. For full SharePoint functionality and support, you must have the February 2014 cumulative update
(CU) or a later CU installed.
Additionally, only a new SharePoint Server 2010 SP2 slipstream installation that has the February 2014 CU or a later CU installed is supported on Windows Server 2012 R2. Microsoft
does not support a Windows in-place upgrade for this scenario.
For your scenario, I suggest you create a new SharePoint Foundation 2010 with SP2 on Windows Server 2012 R2, then migrate the content to new SharePoint 2010.
More information, please refer to the link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2724471/en-us
I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Wendy

Every few days we see two dialogs with the following messages:
Dialog 1, title: Check for Licensing Compliance is Incomplete
The server did not finish checking the license compliance. If the server is joined to a domain, make sure that the server can connect to a domain controller.
Dialog 2, title: Check for Licensing Compliance is Incomplete
The server did not finish checking the license compliance. If the server is joined to a domain, make sure that the server can connect to a domain controller. If the license compliance check cannot be completed, the server will automatically shut
down in 8 day(s) 23 hour(s) 0 minute(s).
The server is not (and never has been) joined to a domain or had any DC roles installed. In fact its still connected to the default Workgroup.
The server was configured in our office and never showed this message until it was installed on site. The main difference from what I can see is that when installed on site it was given a static IP address and does not have any DNS settings in the network
adapter properties.
I have scoured a number of forums on this error but in almost every other instance of this error message the servers are connected to a Domain Controller and the solutions generally are linked to dis-joining and rejoining the domain. Unfortunately this is
not an option for this scenario.
I initially thought that adding some relevant DNS server IP address may resolve the issue, however, we have the exact same model server configured exactly the same running at a different site that does not experience this problem. This server also has no
DNS server configured.
I have seen a post that suggests turning off the servers "Foundation Checking", but I'm unsure how to do this. Thanks for your response Vivian.
I can confirm that this server is not (and never has been) a member of any active directory, it is configured as a Workgroup server. It was initially configured on a network that does have an active directory, but was never joined to it. During that time it
never displayed these messages.
The server was moved into production on a different site and network and setup with a static IP address. The site network does have its own active directory but the server was not joined to it. It is whilst on this new network that these messages began.
Since my original post DNS servers have been added and the Microsoft activation has been verified, however, the messages are still appearing.
There are only 2 user accounts configured on this server. The local admin account and another local admin user.
The remote desktop services roles have been installed but not yet configured. I don't think that has any bearing on this scenario though.
The description of this error in the above "Introduction to Windows Server 2012 Foundation" link states:
This error occurs when the server cannot finish checking the requirements for the root domain, forest trust configuration, or both. It usually happens when the server cannot connect to a domain controller. If the situation persists, the server will
shut down 10 days after the first time the compliance check failed. Each time this error message occurs, it will state the actual time remaining before the server will shut down. If you restart the server after it has shut down because of non-compliance, the
server will shut itself down again in 3 days.
The above description leads me to the following question - In a Workgroup environment, does the server still try to contact a domain controller to establish a level of trust? If this is the case could it be that the server can no longer see the initial DC
on its new network and this is what is triggering the messages?
Am I clutching at straws here? -
Need Acrobat Distiller but it is end of life, need a replacement product to run on windows 2012. I have one software application 'Transform' that only needs to convert files to pdf and email to users.
Which Adobe product runs on windows 2012 that will replace Distiller?Distiller is one of the programs available in the Acrobat Suite of programs. You must have an older version if it is at end of life. Do you have Distiller or Distiller Server. Distiller Server has been replaced by a LiveCycle Server product.

Does windows server 2012 foundation ed. support sharepoint?
does windows server 2012 foundation ed. support sharepoint?
Based on the feature set, yeah it would support SharePoint 2010, but I wouldn't recommend it. Server 2012 Foundation must be a Domain Controller or in a Workgroup, neither of which are good scenarios for a SharePoint installation.

Hyper-v Role in Windows Server 2012 foundation and Essentials
Hello,
I have seen that the two low cost version of Windows Server 2012 essential and Foundation) will not support hyper-v. Can you please tell me what it means exactly :
Can you please tell me what is possible :
-The server can not be installed as a hyper-v guest (probably yes)
-The hyper-v role can not be installed on the server (so I have to rely on vmware)?
- Hyper-v role can be installed but there is no free license included with the server.
Thank you
MarcI suppose then, you would have to install Windows 8 and Hyper-V as your guest or core.
Then run your Server 2012 Foundation under Win8. which has 512GB Memory Limit.
It seems asinine that you cannot install this role on Foundation, but seemingly you could work around it with Win8. (Or Sun Virtual Box (free) (or VmWare(Free).
So load up a dozen Win8Pro virutal sessions on that Win8 VirtualBox with up to 512GB Memory and Create your own Ghetto Remote Desktop Server with Foundation and Windows 8. ;)
What good is it if your can't run Hyper-V and Remote desktop services? Those are the two apps small business need most. But Microsoft strips it out, calls it a DEAL (Essentials and Foundation) , yet if you want the good stuff, you're gonna
have to buy Server 2012 Standard anyhow, + the CALs.
So you are hooked into this "deal" by Microsoft Special Offer. Its special alright, because you get to buy it twice. The stripped down version that come with your server, then the full version when you discover Foundatoin and Essentials gives
you AD, and thats it. Nothing Else. No "deal"
Remember:
All you get with Foundation or Essentials is AD and Group Policy.
You cannot load RDP on Foundation or Essentials
You cannot load Exchange on a DC, or Foundation or Essentials
You cannot load Exchange and RDP on the same box.
You cannot have Remote Web Apps if you load RDP on your DC.
You cannot win with Microsoft. No worthwhile "deal" has ever come out of the city of Redmond.
The internet is a one-way money pipeline to Microsoft.
Its three times the work, three times the cost and requires three servers licenses to do with 2012, what you could do with one 2008R2 license.
Might as well purchase 2 Server 2013 Standard Editions if you want:
1.) Active Directory
2.) Remote Desktop and Remote Apps
3.) Your own Exchange Server
You are better off installing a NAS if all you need is a file server.
Why bother with Foundation or Essentials? Its a "Gimmick-ware" -

Windows Media Centre - Windows Media Foundation - Windows Apps. Replacement for WMC
Still looking for a PVR replacement but DVBLogic looks like it might do the job.
Have gone down the Plex Windows App route (The clostest replacement to WMC player so far) but they are saying they are hamstrung by limitations of the App sandbox? and Windows Media Foundation.
I need some concrete information from the Windows Media Centre People or Windows Media Foundation people so that developers can be steered in the right direction to help people like me switch over from WMC to something else without major headaches, frustrations,
days and days of conversion and metadata reentry.
My post from Microsoft Community
Hi,
Since Windows Media Centre almost didn't make it into Windows 8 I have been looking to move to something else before it disappears for good.
While it might just make it into Windows 10 there certainly won't be any future development.
I not a big fan of Microsoft products but WMC is one application they nailed
Some additional smart recording options
i.e. I had to add "The Big Bang Theory - Return", "The Big Bang Theory - New", "The Big Bang Theory - Finale" etc to my series recording
A proper library manager (Plex does a great job of this) e.g. by series, season, episode - Movies - Documentaries etc with additional data downloaded.
A few more playable formats/containers
It would be perfect.
A proper Library wasn't as important as most of the metadata could be viewed directly in windows explorer.
Not supported with other containers.
This brings me to the first obstacle.
All the alternatives I have looked at so far can't or won't support .wtv files
Converting the files to another format/container loses all the explorer properties. (And some of the metadata completely)
Discussions I have had so far are pointing the finger at the "Windows Media Foundation"
I.e. Developers can't do anything with .wtv files because WMF doesn't support them.
So the question is: If Windows Media Centre is no longer viable for Microsoft why haven't they atleast provided the tools for developers to support the format/container they forced upon so many users of their product.
i.e. Metadata reader/writer
Codec/Container? player?

How to allow more than two users on remote desktop on windows server 2012 foundation?
i have a dell server power edge T300 with windows server 2012 foundation. I am unable to connect more than two remote desktop at once.
Hi,
Add to Brain, you cannot have more than 15 user accounts in Windows Server 2012 Foundation.
In order to access a hosted application, such as Microsoft® Office, a license for Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services is required for each user account (not to exceed 15 user
accounts) that directly or indirectly uses RD Gateway to host a graphical user interface, including using Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client. When using Remote Desktop Services, you may not install or use Remote Desktop Connection Broker or Remote
Desktop Virtualization Host role services. For more information about Remote Desktop CALs , see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=140238.

Windows Server 2012 Foundation
For a really small company I selected Server 2012 Foundation to meet their requirements:
- 3 permanent Users (plus me as an external Administrator)
- just a fileserver to store common data
So, in my opinion, a workgroup installation would satisfy all requirements and RDS Services are required for administration only (for me).
As I found a lot of inconsistent Statements about installation environments on different web pages I would like to get a specific answer to my individual problem.
Which Server role do I have to choose to implement an Administrator remote Access without getting in conflict to other restrictions of the 2012 Foundation characteristics or policies.

Is SharePoint 2010 Supported on Windows 2012 R2
Hi
I have read Trevor Seward's responses to various questions on this subject :-

However, we have a farm which is currently SP2010 SP1 which we are about to upgrade to SP2010 SP2 running on Windows Server 2008R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2. So the farm is currently not supported by Microsoft.
We are now looking to upgrade this farm to SP2013 SP1 running Windows Server 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2012.
We plan to start this process of by upgrading Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 R2.
Will SharePoint 2010 SP2 run on Windows 2012 R2 (or will we need Windows 2012) ?
Once Server 2012 R2 (or Server 2012) is up and running, we will upgrade SP2010 SP2 to Sp2013 SP1.
Finally upgrade SQL Server 2008R2 to SQL Server 2012.
So the part I don't know is will SharePoint 2010 SP2 run on Windows 2012 R2 or Windows 2012 ?
Thanks
Nigel
