Replacing your MacBook

I've had my MacBook for almost 3 years now. When is a good time to replace it?Or if this one is running fine, is it ok to keep it?

I purchased my MacBook in March of 2008, with absolutely no intention of replacing it any time soon.
It's about 2.5 years old now, and still runs great. As the other folks have said, there's no need to replace the computer until a) it no longer meets your needs (and cannot be upgraded to meet those needs for a reasonable cost) or b) a part or parts fail & cannot be replaced inexpensively (a $500 repair on a 3+ year old computer isn't a good investment, usually; the money would be better spent towards a new machine).
Enjoy your MacBook until it can't do what you need it to, and then look into retiring it for something newer.

You have to take the computer to the Apple store and get an estimate.
    Best.

  • When apple replaced your macbook did you get a confirmation letter?

Apple graciously replaced my previous macbook that I purchased through Amazon. The problem is I always get extended warranty through my credit card company when I buy computers. Because I already registered with my CC company the computer that was replaced, I need some evidence that the one I have now is a replacement from Apple in order to get my warranty extension.
If you received a replacement, did Apple also send you a letter confirming the replacement?
    cheers!
    Paul

I had an iBook replaced about 15 months ago. I asked the Applecare person with whom I spoke about this and he wrote a letter stating that it was a replacement and sent it to me as proof of replacement (just in case) there was a problem such as you describe.
I don't think there would have been a problem and neither did he but he wrote it anyway "just in case".

I assume that you have installed new RAM in your MBP.
It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.
What the the RAM specifications that you are trying to install?
    Ciao.

  • A warning about your MacBook Pro (Do not let this happen to you)

If your MacBook Pro is nearing the end of its warranty do like be like me. Purchase the extended warranty!
Just before the warranty ran out on my 17" MacBook Pro in December of 2007 the NVIDEA Graphics chip set failed. (8600GT). As you will see below, this is a known issue that can affect your MacBook Pro. Since the machine was still under warranty the logic board was replaced at no cost to me. (Yay!)
Well, the new board came with a 6 month warranty. I decided (foolishly) not to purchase the extended Apple Care. Two weeks ago, it failed again. Apple claims that it ought to have failed (if it were ever going to) within 90 days. Obviously this is false since I had the first quite a while before it failed. They will not pay to fix it this time. So I am stuck with a broken machine since it would cost quite a bit out of pocket to replace the board.
Needless to say, Im very disappointed with this and have no where to turn. I should have bought the extended care even though at the time I hadn't researched enough to realize they are aware of these issues of the NVIDEA 8600 mobile sets randomly failing. I've been a loyal Apple customer all my life, owning many many different models since my first 512K "fat mac" in 1985.
So, be aware. If you own a MacBook Pro at any given time in its life the graphic chip set might fail you and if you are not covered under the extended care (even if the warranty ended a short month and half before it died) you will not get your board replaced.

NVIDIA takes rare loss on faulty chips, competition
Graphics chip builder NVIDIA has reported its first quarterly loss in almost five years, writes the Wall Street Journal. The company has taken a net loss of $120.9 million for its second financial quarter, admitting that materials used to package its mobile graphics chips caused unusually high failure rates. Third-party observers have suggested that the company's desktop processors could be affected as well, but this allegation has not been confirmed.
Chip failures could be responsible for an error with Apple's MacBook Pro, in which the display goes black but every other component keeps running.

Sorry Dave, have to chime in here as you're very wrong, and BermudaSeal has gone through a lot here and doesn't need to be fed false information, however good the intention.
When the Nvidia cards go wrong, what happens is exactly what BermudaSeal is experiencing, they get reported by the OS as an intel X3100 - which is the core card that forms part of the SR chipset, and coincidentally the graphics card in the MB. Basically the hardware is reporting no external graphics card (the nvidia card), and so assumes that the default one is present. It's a bit like PC motherboads that have built in GPU's, which can be bypased by adding in your own third party part. In this case , the third party part has failed, and unfortunately there is no built in GPU either - hence, black screen.
This is a classic case of a failed NVidia chip, and, depending on the country where Bermuda Seal lives, he/she should be able to get this sorted very swiftly by Apple, as it is a known defect with the hardware that can be proven - BermudaSeal should not have to foot the bill for this - keep trying and refer Apple to the multiple posts on this forum where folks out of warranty have got the issue fixed.
That plus the fact that Bermuda Seal clearly described his machine in the first post - haven't seen many 17" Macbooks around, have you?
    Good Luck!

Any 2.5" form factor SATA drive will work.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application SuperDuper. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html  You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

Can Apple replace my macbook pro (mid 2012) retina's battery if I think that the battery health has gone bad/in need of and renewal???
I've had my Macbook for about 11 months now and i use it every day; its gone though about 420 cycles of charging and using the power, and i noticed the battrey preformance has decreased (as expected). The problem isn't sevear yet but it would comfort me knowing that i could replace the battery in the near future
Please contact me or answer the question if you know anything about this!

No only if they think under warranty/AppleCare, but your likely able to pay for a new battery if they have them, which they might not yet since it's such a new machine still.
BTW, I have a Early 2011 17" MBP, 27 months old, charges to 97% and has only 14 cycles.

    likely display inverter board.
did you get your inverter board replaced already?
    Did you have a question?
If the diagnostic in shop indicates same, thats 1000X better than anyone can do online in "diagnosis" (not really genuine diagnosis of course)

  • Will apple replace my macbook pro?

    Hi
I have a problem with the trackpad on my macbook pro 13''. not all the time but sometimes it feels loose and when you click down it it it clicks twice instead of once. i took it to the apple store and they altered the trackpads clicking space beneath so it clicks down further but this has not helped so i was wondering if apple will replace my macbook pro. however there are a couple of small scratches on the shell of the macbook pro which obviously have no effect on the working order of the trackpad but will apple refuse to replace my macbook with this cosmetic damage? also i would also like to know if anyone else has had the same problem with a loose trackpad that doesn't click correctly. thank you

    robc10,
if your MacBook Pro is no longer in its warranty period, then they will not replace it. If it is still in its warranty period, refer to its warranty in your region to see whether replacement would be an available option for you.

  • Battery replacement on MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013?

Could you replace your batteries in a 13in MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013 yourself?
If not, could Apple replace them at a fee or could I go to a third party shop?
Also, how long or how much cycles does a battery last?
I was planning to buy a macbook and was taking that into consideration.

  • When I try to order a new bottom case for my macbook is sais that your macbook is not part of this program.

When I go on to google I type in replace bottom of macbook case it takes me to apple support I select 'feel free to order yourself' so I click that I select my country and enter my serial number and it comes up with 'The Apple product serial number you entered is not part of this program' What do I do?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you see that your Mac isn't part of the program, that's because your MacBook isn't affected by that problem so, if the bottom case isn't damaged, you don't have to worry.
If it's affected, take the computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get the bottom case replaced. In this case, unless your Mac is in warranty, you will have to pay

  • Lost iPhoto when Apple replaced damaged MacBook Pro hard drive

My son and daughter-in-law recently had to replace their MacBook Pro hard drive. Apple did the replacement, but they got it back without iPhoto. Isn't that standard software when you purchase a MacBook Pro? Shouldn't it be part of the replacement, too?

If your computer shipped with Lion, follow the directions here to redownload the iLife apps:
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
If you erase install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

  • About replace a macbook pro

I got my new rMBP and found a small dent on the body. So I called the apple online store customer service this afternoon for a replacement. Someone said they would send me a fedex prepaid label for returning the product. But 10 hours have passed, and I haven't got the email yet..... Any one has had the same situation? How long will it take to get the email??

I actually had to go through that but not with Apple....
Had to deal with it through HP and Dell......
What usually happens is they send you a package via Fedex and once you get it, wrap up your Macbook back to it's original package - put your macbook in the supplied packaging (if it's provided) and stick the label in the box.....
Call fedex back for a pick up......
Apple might do it a different way.....

  • How much to replace broken macbook pro screen??

how much to replace broken macbook pro screen??

    Few thoughts:
There is a minuscule possibility that you can successfully convince the Genius that the damage was not due to abuse or mishandling. And if it is still under warranty, a new free screen will be yours. Don't get your hopes up too high, though...
If a Retina, the cost will be so high that maybe selling it for parts and getting a new one might be a better idea.
Same may apply if it is very old. Not cause the screen costs arm+leg, but because you will be sinking lots of cash onto a sinking ship.
If handy with tools, can explore PowerBookMedic.com or IFixIt.com for parts prices and howto.

  • Thinking of replacing my macbook with an ipad for travel overseas, can I plug my iphone4 into the ipad for charging?

thinking of replacing my macbook with an ipad for travel overseas, can I plug my iphone4 into the ipad for charging?

    no
the USB does not out out enough power to charge anything.
And if you want to share chargers it's best to share your iPad charger with your iPhone. the iPad charger is a 10W charger, the iPod ones are 5W. So it'll charge, just not as fast as 'normal'
