Replication Tab for DFS Namespace is Blank

Good afternoon.  We have several folders in our single DFS namespace.  Typically, there would be 2-4 folder targets within a folder, with only one enabled.  Until recently, when I would select a folder target and click on its Replication tab,
I would see information about each folder target.  Now, it's blank.
Replication is working, and the replication configuration for each folder target does appear in the Replication section of the DFS management console.  When I click on the "Replicate Folder Wizard" on the Replication tab, I get an error informing
me that "folder targets cannot be added as DFS Replication members".  That would stand to reason since replication is occurring.
My question is, then, how do I get the replication configuration information to return to the Replication tab?  Thanks.

Above all I would like to confirm:
1. If client can access each folder target with \\server1\folder, \\server2\folder etc when the issue occurs.
2. How many Namespace servers are set for that namespace.
Referral list is provided by namespace server. So please check if namespace server is available to be accessed as well.
Generally this is a temp issue. You can test to refresh DFS cache on client with "dfsutil /pktflush" or simply do a reboot. If acceptable you can also try to reboot your namespace server and refresh DFS cache again to see the result.

    Hello,
    I have recently setup 2 dfsn & dfsr servers, both 2012 one physical the other virtual.
    The idea is to have one server as primary and the other as a failover \ DR.
    The primary server is virtual and connects via mpio \ iscsi to a dell san, using the provided dell DSM Drivers.
    The secondary server is physical with local disk for storage.
    I copy files to a namespace setup to always prefer the primary server, these files are then replicated across to the secondary.
    I have also turned on deduplication on both servers to get the most out of the available storage.
    This has been working well for 6 months or so, there have however been 2-3 occasions where the primary virtual server has crashed and blue screened causing the DFSR database to undergo a full consistency check.
    The bug check errors i have managed to extract from the Memory.dmp and mini dump are as follows:

        Each time a driver uses a pointer to an object the driver calls a kernel routine

    I have searched for others having a similar problem but have not managed to find much.
    The memory dump at the time of the crash does seem to hint at a problem with DFSR.exe.
    The setup seems to be running fine again now and is going through its consistency checks, it is just a major inconvenience and will only get worse as the DFS becomes busier and approaches capacity.
    The plan was to put this setup into production however with the unpredictability of blue screen reboots I cannot see this happening until I can find a fix or work around.
    I have yet to see this problem occur on the other (physical) server, this is pretty much identical in configuration apart from its storage access.
    My thoughts are a possible bug in the DFSR component or a bug in the DSM Drivers used for the iSCSI SAN connection or maybe a combination of the two.
    Any help, thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated

  • Can you Setup a Active Passive DFS namespace in the same site

    Hi,
    I would like to use DFS for profile replication. I know MS doesn't recommend it, but was wondering if you could setup DFS namespace in an Active/ passive contests in the same AD site. I think or what I can understand of DFS is that if the Fileserver is in
    the same site it would select it randomly and you cant specify which server is the primary.
    Basically what I want is to have users only access File server 1, but if this file server 1 goes down to be redirected to file server 2.

    You could have a read-only Replica but that really doesn't help you in terms of the automatic redirection thing.  You could also set up a 2-node replication group and disable the referral for the folder(s) on one node like below:
    However the "failover" would be manually Enabling, which I doubt fits the bill. 
    Otherwise, I'm not aware of any configuration of DFSR that allows you to do what you're talking about (maybe someone else will correct me.)  HOWEVER, I suspect a design that fits your use case may be to create a DFS namespace that runs
    on a file server cluster.  That way if Node1 goes down, the cluster fails over,  and the data continues to be available on Node2 when accessed via DFS.
    If interested, there are a couple ways to approach DFS in combination with a cluster. 
    Configuration1:  The cluster is configured to host the namespace as well as the folder targets (where the actual data is).  CAVEAT - The cluster can only be configured as a standalone cluster.
    Configuration2:  Create a domain DFS namespace that resides on other servers. 
    \\domain\DFSRoot for example.  Then point each of the leaves/folder targets to clustered shares. So you'd create a subfolder called "Profiles" that points to the clustered share that houses the profiles.
    Just an idea.  Hope this helps.

    We recently rolled out DFS replication and namespaces. I want to change the target in my policies from \\server\Home to the DFS namespace. I've followed the document and put {{\\server\Home}} in the Description of the namespace. The server hasn't actually changed, just the path statement in the policy target. I've created a test policy and it works when creating new users. My problem is with existing users. Storage Manager is up to date with the latest version.
    This is the behaviour I see:
    I change the target in the policy to the namespace. I go to Management Actions and Manage the user. In Pending Events, I see a Bypassable event with the message: Waiting for policy paths to become accessible -- 27:File system path already exists. When I bypass the event and Watch the file system, I see the folder on the server renamed to username-FSMOVE. A new folder is created and the data is copied. In Pending Events, the rest of the actions pass through fine. Sometimes the Home Directory attribute in AD is updated, mostly it is not.
    My question is, is there any way to bypass all the data copies and simply update the Storage Manager database and the AD attribute? New users behave correctly, existing ones just need to be updated with the new path. I have nearly 100,000 users and several thousand groups. Clicking "bypass" one by one is a chore I don't look forward to. I'm almost tempted to simply wipe out SM and install new.
    Any suggestions?

    The good news is that you can multi-select events in Pending Events -
    Ctrl+A to select an entire page of events, then clicking 'Bypass', works
    just fine. You can also change the page size for the event list - by
    default the paging is 1000 events, but it can be set to any number. I
    wouldn't recommend trying to put 100,000 in the Pending Event list at
    once -- the UI will be extremely slow -- but 5,000 is more than
    reasonable for this sort of task.
    What you're really after, though, is the Assign Home Directory
    management action. This sets the Home Directory attribute on the target
    users for the management action without doing any file system copies.
    That should save you a great deal of work!

  • Deleted DFS Namespace still works

    Hi All,
    I inherited a network with a fairly poor DFS Domain based configuration as follows (with no replication):
    2x DCs, (DC01(FSMO RoleHolder) & DC03)
    1x Storage Server (NAS03)
    All servers are 2012R2
    DC01 was the name space server pointing at folder targets on NAS03, DC01 failed taking down the namespace, I siezed the roles on DC03, did a metadata cleanup to get rid of DC01, re-installed Windows on DC01 &
    promoted it again, the namespace then begun to work again but it was unmanageable so I followed someone's recommendation
    to remove the namespace using ADSIEdit & Regedit
    I have created a new namespace with a new name (I kept getting an error that the configuration couldn't be read from AD when trying to re-use the old name) and that functions fine however the old namespace
    still allows users to access files on it, the DFS console doesn't show it if i try to find namespaces to display.
    any ideas how I can get rid of the old name space and any comments on if there was a better way to deal with the old one? (other than the obvious have more than 1 namespace server!)

    Since there are two domain controllers, please run "repadmin /syncall" in the environment to manually make them sync the information from AD database.

  • Adding a DFS Namespace on Windows 2012 produces an error

    I have a very small lab environment with a 2012 AD server and two 2012 clients which I am testing DFSR before placing into production.
    I can't seem to get a Namespace created.
    Regardless if which host I try to create it on, I get the following error:
    \\domain\shared: The namespace server \\hostname\shared cannot be added.  The user name or password is incorrect.
    The wizard does not ask for a username or password.
    I am logged in with the domain\administrator account.
    The share does get created.  I have given Everyone and domain\Administrator  full control.
    I am stumped and am looking for direction.

    When I create the DFS Namespace, say I call it 'public' as per the example,  'C:\DFSRoots\public' is created.
    NOTE: I have tried this logged in locally as Administrator as well as domain\administrator (AD = 2012 also).
    NOTE: If I create the Namespace on other volumes, again X:\DFSRoots\public is created - so the problem doesn't appear to follow the volume....
    I can see that C:\DFSRoots\public is 'Read Only' - however toggling this attribute does not resolve the problem.
    Also viewing Effective Permissions to C:\DFSRoots\public shows that domain\administrator has Full Permissions (all permissions with a green checkmark) as well with local administrator.
    Regarding C:\System Volume Information - I was unable to view the contents of this folder until I gave myself Full Permissions - after which my Effective Permissions for C:\System Volume Information\DFSR became Full Permissions top to bottom.
    Yet the error remains the same.
    If I try the same operation on the other replication partner I get the same error.
    I'm wondering if there isn't some inherent 2012 AD Group Policy Restriction causing this behavior.   This is also the first test with a 2012 AD with Domain Functional Level 2012.
    This is basically a fresh build from .iso - no customization outside of installing the DFS Roles.
    The DFS Replication works swimmingly - no problems either configuring it or observing functionality.
    Just DFS Namespace is problematic.
    I can't identify where DFS Namespace logs either.   I found the DFS Replication Logs easy enough...

  • Mavericks and Microsoft DFS Namespace

    Hi Gang,
      I have a couple of Mavericks machines accessing data via Microsoft DFS on a Windows 2008 R2 server.
    I read about the knows issues with Mavericks and SMB2, and have configured them to connect to the DFS Namespace using CIFS.  Network captures - via Wireshark - confirm SMB1.  One user just complained that she was "disconnected from the server"; at the approximate time in the pcap file, I found a burst of packets in SMB2 in the middle of the SMB packets. (I have a continuous capture running on some machines reporting issues)
    The user was in Finder and had about 5 directories down the tree open in the panel view.  What she described happening you could call the tree collapsing; all the panels went blank except for the root.  To get back to work, she ejected the mounted Namespace and re-connected to it.
    In the packets, I can see the end of the SMB2 burst returns error: status_no_such_file and the subsequent packets (SMB1) I see Query File All Info:  Path: \ when before the SMB2 burst the query showed a path way down the directory tree.
    Would anyone here have an idea what's up with that?  And, how would it likely be associated with the trouble?

    I saw some other threads that indicated certain fonts were causing the issue.  I believe they had to remove Office and then reinstall which would only have the package fonts. Do a search and see if you can find those comments.

  • When I close Firefox (all tabs) and then reopen later, it does not offer the link to restore my prior tabs, it opens on a blank page, not even a home page v 9.0.1

    I "upgraded"/ "updated" firefox to version 9.0.1, there are no newer updates offered. I used to be able to restore my prior session upon opening firefox the next time, now it doesn't even offer that link on the opening page. And it does not open a 'homepage' for firefox, just a blank page, with one empty tab/window, this is not an improvement

    Try typing ''about:home'' into the address bar. Is that the page you are looking for? If so, go to ''Tools > Options > General'' and save it as your homepage. If that home page doesn't show up the next time you start Firefox, you should look at [[Preferences are not saved]].

    I'm having the exact same problem.  I upgraded to the newest version of iTunes on my iMac and ever since I did the store is a blank white screen.  I can get my library content but the store is a no go.  Is there any one out there with a solution?

  • Slow Files Copy File Server DFS Namespace

    I have two file servers running on VM both servers are on different physical servers.
    Both connect with dfs namespace.
    The problem part is both servers never have same copy speed.
    Sometime very slow files copy about 1MBps on FS01 and fast copy 12MBps on FS02.
    Sometime fast on FS01 and slow on FS02.
    Sometime both of them slow..
    So as usual I reboot the servers. Doesn't work.
    Then I reboot the DC01 also doesn't work. There is another brother DC02.
    After I reboot DC02, one of the FS become normal and another FS still slow.
    FS01 and FS02 randomly. They never get faster speed together.
    Users never complain slow FS because 1MBps is acceptable for them to open word excel etc.,.
    The HUGE problem is I don't have backup when the slow FS days.
    The problem since two weeks I'm giving up fixing it myself and need help from you expert guys.

    Since the slow copy is also occurred when you tried the direct copy from both shared folder, you could enable the disk write cache on the destination server to check the results.

  • Import already existing directory structure into DFS namespace?

    Hi all,
    I'm planning to migrate three file servers to a single DFS namespace and after reading the official docs and numerous blog posts I'm still unsure about the right way to do it.
    The "main" server already has a share with a complex directory structure, called \\server1\team, and that share shall become the root of the new DFS namespace, lets call it  \\domain.local\team.
    Part of that already existing directory structure is this folder: \\server1\team\admin\communication\archive. The folder "archive" contains thousands of files in numerous folders and shall become a dfs link to another share \\server2\archive. But
    before I can create the folder "archive" as a dfs link I have to create the folder "admin" in the dfs hierarchy of course, then below that the folder "communication"
    Question: When I try to create a folder "admin" in the dfs namespace, I get the error message "the folder cannot be created in the namespace. The file exists."
    Ok, the folder "admin" indeed exists, but how can I "import" this branch of the existing directory hierarchy into the dfs namespace?
    Do I have to rename the existing folder "admin" to e.g. "admin2", then create the dfs folder "admin" and move the complete directory structure below "admin2" to "admin"? Or can I simply make the existing folder
    "admin" a dfs folder?

    I have to describe my problem more precisely: creating the root of the new DFS namespace is *not* the problem. This worked for me exactly as you expained it. The problem appears when I try to create a folder below that root in the DFS namespace. If that
    folder already exists in the share you cannot choose how to handle security settings but you get an error message, and that's it.
    This may be helpfull to explain what I want to achieve:
    Old structure:
    \\server1\team - folder admin - subfolder "archive" - lots of subfolders and files
    Now I want to move all files and folders from "archive" to \\server2\archive and link this share into the new DFS namespace, so that our users don't notice any change when they access that archive folder.
    new structure:
    1. Create DFS namespace root: \\domain.local\team  -> \\server1\team   (works!)
                |
    2. Create folder admin  (problem!)
                |
    3. Create subfolder "archive" -> \\server2\archive (not possible becaues "admin" couldn't be created)
    I could perhaps create a DFS namespace with the root \\server1\team\admin\archive and link that to \\server2\archive, but I would like to avoid creating a new namespace for each share which from \\server2 which I mount into some subfolder of \\server1\team...

    Click in a blank space on a toolbar & open 'customize'. You'll find that there is a gray "x" (on my browser it's gray) that is for closing a tab. Drag it up to wherever you want on the toolbar & it should work fine.

    We have situation in Release Strategy for Purchase Requsitions in which we need to display all approvers names under the Release strategy tab for a Purchase Requisition.
    Senerio work as follows.
    Based on the Release strategy customization settings,Purchase Requisition subjected to release strategy selects the approver names from a custom table.
    In the Custom table we have names of the approvers with release codes.
    Purchase Requisition displaying the names of the approvers according to alphabetical order.Hence it displays First one user or approver name under the release strategy according to the approver alphabetical order from the custom table.
    Can we display name of all approvers in one line according to initial investigation there is room for 40 characters under the release strategy tab.
    Let me know if any Standarad OSS notes available for this.

    Hi amogh if you configure with workflow the strategy and the name of the persons are in transaction SU01, you don´t need to put nothing. The release strategy shows the names of the persons that release the document, but if you change one person in the release strategy, the system don´t save history for this, all old documents that have been released for this person, release strategy is blank. You have to do a non standard report that shows what person releases what document.

    You can check for issues with the Windows icon cache and try to rebuild the icon cache.
    # Open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+ESC)
    # In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
    # Open the file picker via "File > New Task (Run)" and click the Browse button.
    # Type or Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local (%LocalAppData%) in the File name field (AppData is a hidden folder).
    # Select the IconCache.db file and use "Delete" in the right-click context menu to delete the file.
    # After the IconCache.db file has been deleted, start a new explorer.exe process via "File > New Task" to get the desktop and Taskbar back.
    The IconCache.db file is a hidden file, so make sure that you can see hidden files.

  • Music and sounds folders not appearing under "music and sounds" tab for approx 5 min after launch

    So every time I launch fcpx, under the "music and sounds" tab, all that is appearing is my iTunes folder, with the other folders (iLife sounds, FCP sound effects, etc) not appearing for about 5 min or so...anyone else experiencing this? Is there a fix?

    Nothing ever shows up under the "Music and Sounds" tab for me. I can wait an hour and nothing "appears." The dropdown menu is blank and can never be used to select anything: It remains blank.
    I've deleted preferences, rebooted, logged-in as a different user and reinstalled the application. None of that has made the "Music and Sound" section work.
    If I drag a folder to the top area (after pulling down the gray bar) the icon changes to show a green plus sign and the top area is outlined with green. After dropping the folder nothing happens; it does not appear in the list. I've tried several different folders from iTunes and other locations, all to no avail.
