Repointing DNS A names from other web hosting companies

I have a website name registered at UK Reg and want to point it to my .mac iweb page. Does anyone know how to find out what the IP address of my published page is?

James,
I finally got around to doing the two sites. One thing is that I cannot seem to alter the attributes of the slideshow feature. ie I can't get it to magnify. Anyway as per your request my wife's site is www.itsawrapw4.co.uk - I still have to put more content there but it's up and running. my business site is www.lundbergallen.com.
I have to say iweb is a lot easier than Dreamweaver which I have used for anoother of my websites.
Look forward to your views re the slideshow effects.

  • Do I get charged for any uploading (possibly even from my web host) when people download a podcast that I have created?

Do I get charged for any uploading (possibly even from my web host) when people download a podcast that I have created?

Not as far as iTunes is concerned: hosting a podcast there is free. However the media files are kept on your server - your ISP or a hosting service - and there may be a limit to bandwidth. If you podcast turned out to be extremely popular then the number of downloads might exceed the allowable bandwidth from your server in a given period and lead to an extra charge or possibly blocking until the period was over: this is something you would have to check with them.

  • .Mac server speed vs. other web hosting services

Does anyone have any direct experience comparing the speed with which iWeb pages load on other web hosting services in comparison with .Mac?
I find that when I access my site using IE on a Windows platform, the load times can be pretty slow. Do other web hosting services load iWeb pages quicker?
Is the problem iWeb, the .Mac server or both?
I am going to need to use iWeb, does it make any sense to switch to another web hosting service (e.g., blue host) to post my site developed in iWeb or will it make no difference?
    Many thanks for your comments.

iWeb offers try WYSIWYG page, which is cool, but if you get away from the standard websafe fonts, your site will be a bunch of fat PNGs and not HTML text, since the text fields will all turn into images. I went to a iWeb-created site recently that had two screens worth of text that iWeb had converted to a PNG. The text on the page took forever to download since it was a 650K image.
As previously mentioned IE (Mac or PC) has never rendered PNGs well. It's hard to imagine it doesn't support a Web-standard image format that's been around as long as the Web has. No wonder FireFox use is growing so fast.
There are other things that can be done to shrink site size and speed up loading. Basics, like limiting most pages to one screen, using a basic font like Verdana, and keeping images to small screen sizes. Also importing photo albums and images for blogs through iPhoto's button keeps them all as JPEGS. Movies and music are a really killer too, since iWeb loads those cool QT frames. When you have more than one per page, loading time can take forever.

  • Imagine you received this message from your web hosting provider

We have extended your web hosting account until June 30, 2012 at no cost to you. On July 1st we are closing our business and will no longer host your websites. That’s it... no help for transitioning to another company, no news of contacts with other service providers who could transparently continue the service, no indication as to why the service is ending.
Well, this is exactly what Apple has done to its thousands of web hosting customers, and we don’t deserve to be treated this way, left in the cold to worry without any other information whatsoever. Is this how you would expect bluehost, hostexcellence, Go Daddy, MacHighway, or any other web hosting provider, to treat you?

Mount your iDisk (Finder Go menu) and copy your files back to your machine.
You have a year to find yourself a new hosting service.

  • Will iweb continue to work with other web host after june 2012

will iweb continue to work with other web host after june 2012

as long as osx supports it, iweb should work beyond june 2012 as an app by itself.
however, the some of the currently published code will break when mme servers are to shut down; unless apple comes up with a patches by then.
most of mme features can be replaced and fully implemented on other host servers.
    Password protection
can be implemented with apache server.

if i feel good i just may release my installer for iweb slideshow patch.

  • Recommended Web Hosting companies for Video/Photographers

In starting up my own videography and photography business are there any web hosting companies that someone could recommend that have the adequate bandwidth to support lots of photo and video downloading? Most, if not all the, elcheapo hosting services (Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc.) have cheap prices but crappy speed. I don't mind paying for what I need but I expect it to be delivered.

Actually I am looking into just that. I have a litney of questions I just sent to their support staff that I figured were too lengthy to ask here.
I might as one. It would be VERY worthwhile to be able to get more stats than just hits. Not being a Zen Web Master, is this possible with a .mac account? Is it as simple as just putting in some hooks into my web page to enable this?
I've been looking around asking some friends I have in and out of multiple business and, rightly so, most of the feedback I've seen, the hosting companies want, up front, estimates of what my use will be and at what speeds. I've not a clue on these stats. Kind of a catch 22. Don't know the stats until you get a web site up but can't get a web site until I know the stats. This is where a .mac account would be idea, at least for starters but I think to be really useful I would need to be able to get the statistics. Also, I want my own URL with my company name in it. I believe that this is possible but I think I need to first register my name externally and then I somehow link to it from a .mac account. I've got no idea how to do this other than getting a name. That is easy.

  • Changed web hosting companies/mail server

I just changed web hosting companies and want to know if I change the "incoming" and "outgoing" server to the new server addresses will I lose the emails that I have for this account? Said another way, I'm going to open mail preferences, select the mail account I need to change and type in new mail server addresses?
Sorry if this has been answered before but I couldn't find an answer in a search.

Hi there, and welcome to the Discussions.
Changing the outgoing (SMTP) server should not make you loose emails, since the SMTP server is, by definition, only used to send emails. The emails you have already sent and want to keep are stored in a folder that is completely independent from your choice of SMTP server.
When it comes to changing the incoming server, that's a different business. The consequences of such a change depend on the type of the server. Is it POP? IMAP?... If it is POP, I would assume that you would not loose anything, because POP works in such a way that you download all your emails from the POP server, the emails are then deleted from the server (at least, this is the default setting), and then the reference copies of your emails are the ones on your computer, which should therefore not be touched by a change in the POP server.
If the incoming server is an IMAP server, then I don't know what will happen, but there is a risk that you could loose your emails. This is because, with IMAP, the reference copies of your emails are the ones on the server, with which your computer automatically synchronizes.
In any case, before doing anything, BACKUP YOUR EMAILS, and make sure your know how to restore these backups in case something goes wrong.
Then, I suggest you wait for someone more knowledgeable than myself to better answer your question.
    Hope this helps

I've been through a few different hosts in as many years --
reasons for leaving them include excessive downtime and poor
customer support. All of the hosts that I quit using had an uptime
guarantee, but their servers would routinely bog down during peak
    traffic hours.
I'm currently using GoDaddy; I've been with them for about a
year now. I haven't noticed any downtime on their servers, their
rates and features/plans are very competitive, and customer service
is excellent. With other services I'd typically wait for upwards of
a half hour to get someone on the phone, but I get through to
support at GoDaddy almost immediately. I'd recommend them to anyone
looking for personal or small business use -- the only caveat is
that their lowest price plans only give you 10mb for your email
accounts, so you either have to do a little routine maintenance or
    upgrade your email plan.

  • Aperture with .mac vs other web hosting sites

A new guy here with a couple of questions concerning using Aperture to post webpages, etc. I'd really appreciate some advice from you photogs already in the business.
Disclaimer: Forgive my ignorance, but years of using a PC have turned my brain into mush. Therefore, some of these questions might be quite laughable.
I'm wanting to set up a website for a photography business. I already have a domain name but am still setting up a website. I use Aperture for most of my work and would like to continue the Apple flow into .mac. However, I am torn over whether I should set up a website for my clients to visit using a .mac account or some other website such as SmugMug
    1. How well does Aperture work with .mac? Do you find it easier to do everything in Aperture and send it out to other websites other than .mac?
    2. How user friendly is .mac for you and your customers?
    3. What advice can you give me in setting up an easy and user-friendly site that gives customers easy access to a professional looking site and still maintain easy business transactions?
    I appreciate your answers.
    Thanks

OR have I missed something! John T
Well, .Mac makes things simpler but also sometimes a bit harder in that it helpfully places things for you...
You can however change things around after publishing, the thing to do is go to that "iDisk" icon in the finder. There look in the "Sites" folder, and you will find all of the web galleries Aperture (or iWeb) has generated. You can move them from there and the url for anything in that Sites directory will always be "http://homepage.mac.com/<.Mac username/<foldername>" where foldername is the name of a folder in Sites.
You can use the names there to get an idea of what you have published and also clean things up.

  • .mac or other web hosting, need opinions.

    Hi All,
I have some questions regarding .mac using iweb 08. I am currently
using the trial and doing some testing. My wife wants to design
a nice family website, I am somewhat familiar with web design as I
work as a system administrator. Can you add pages you create
elsewhere to the .mac site, for example in dreamweaver? Will it
suppose activex, flash, etc. Can you directly edit the pages
you create in iweb with other tools? Basically i'm looking
for a pros and cons list for going with .mac versus another
hosting company. I like the capability of using iweb but
hosting it elsewhere, will this work? I understand there
are apps to make this easy to do. Any advice is appreciated. Also
we need the capability to have message boards also.
    Thanks,
    Greg
    Greg.

I think there is a difference if you as a professional or experienced web tools user want to make a web site or if your wife (if she does not have web skills) want to make a web site.
For you that is probably not the most flexible system but for the unexperienced it is perfect. There is almost no learning curve and within a very short time a layperson can have a nice published web site. I do believe that is what Apple had in mind.

  • Other web hosting

Hi I noticed that the last update of muse has a way to work with uploading a muse file to another 3 party host like godady.com now. very cool. but from the video it showed u just log into the account and upload by ftp right. well does the files have to be exported as html or can it be a muse file? and then does the designer have to have a godady.com account to do this? or am miss understanding the muse video. i found the video in the new features of muse.  thanks.

You don't need to export the files as html and upload separately. Editing login will work with FTP login so user having hosting credential can login to browser editor.

  • How to find the physical Host Name from a short host name?

    Hi,
I meet a problem that in RFC destination setting I see some people maintain the
short name in 'HOST NAME' field. But I need the long phiscial name.
For example, the short one 'bsw6107', the phisical name is 'bsw6107.wdf.sap.corp'. It there a table or FM to look for it?
      Thank you.

    Hi,
Changing a host name on a central instance is a BIG thing, I personally would rather reinstall instead of changing a hostname...
What comes immediately to my mind is:
    - SAP profiles
    - .sapenv* .dbenv* scripts
    - OPS$ users
    - /etc/hostname*
    - /etc/hosts
    - TMS (/usr/sap/trans)
    - Backup clients (and backup server changes if you use a central backup system)
    - RFC destination of external systems
    - SAP printers
    - other external systems connecting to the server (Fax, Archiving etc.)
