Report Engine enhancements in Future Apex version considrations.

Hi Apex Team,
  Just want to stressed and support Arie's point below which he brought up in another thread:
/Quote
There are other areas that IMHO needs the attention of the team, much much more then the UI.
First and foremost, the report engine.
Everyone following this forums knows that printing issues are the least to be answered and solved.
Printing PDF is great, but the content of the reports are much more important.
Report break issues, master details report, and many others are very important issues that need to be address.
The BI publisher is a great tool, but it’s a very expensive one (corporate level).
More simple, built in solutions for hard copy reports (not PDF but simple hard copy printing) is much more important,
IMHO, then almost anything else on the enhancement request list.

Hi,
We are in the midst of migrating our applications from VB/VC to Apex and in our applications, reports account for :
1. User  -  30% - 50% of overall application's functionalities in their daily usage.
            This requires mostly hard copy with report's breaks, master details reports.
2. Supervisory / Middle Management -  40% to 70%.
                                      Prefer 20% to 30% of reports in PDF.
3.Top Level Management - 70% to 95%.
                          Prefer most reports in PDF with flash charts where applicable.
Majority of our customers are not considering BI for PDF as costs are too high,
fortunately Apex has other alternatives which we are reviewing currently.
Regards
Zack

  • Error: "Couldn't create Crystal Reports Engine for report format version 10.0"

    Post Author: mkubala
    CA Forum: Crystal Reports
    I created several reports in ClearQuest v2003.6.15 using Crystal Reports v10. When a user tries to run these reports from his machine he gets the following error:"Problems executing ReportContact your ClearQuest administrator to verify that a supported version of Crystal Reports has been installed.Couldn't create Crystal Reports Engine for report format version 10.0"My version of CR is compatible with this version of CQ and he shouldn't need CR installed to run the reports so I'm not sure what the issue is?

    I have the same problem with ClearQuest 7.0.1.1, except the error contains 'version 11.0' instead of 10.0.This happened when I installed Crystal Reports XI Pro designer.  I followed the procedure to manually uninstall and re-install CR, which allowed me to to author report formats, but I still get this error when trying to view report in the ClearQuest for Windows client.  I tried to re-register all the CR viewer DLLs I could find, but still no luck.Any suggestions?  Thanks,Nate

  • Web based reporting engine integrated with APEX

    Hello,
    I would like to use some completely web-based reporting solution for my application. My idea is that I will create some datasource, prepare database query and publish some data columns to end users (datamodel). They will choose from many of prepared data areas, create their own report using some intuitive web-based report designer and save it. I do not need it for any analytic purposes, no dynamic filters, graphs and other widgets, no BI. It will be all only about building text based reports with few dynamic fields (customer address, actual date etc..).
    For example: User will prepare some document (template) with few paragraphs and add some of prepared dynamic fields into it (ie. company name, customer address, repeating table with list of employees, some image). Then he will be able to generate same document for many customers etc..
    I am looking for some simple, user friendly web based application. Some external report builder for example for Jasper reports is not what I am looking for.
    I will need to integrate it with  Oracle 11g XE with APEX 4.2 so some API or URL parameters is must.
    Used reporting engine does not be completely free, but I am able to pay max. $5000 for it
    Do you have some tips?
    Thank you

    This could be a solution for APEX reports (interactive reports). But I want to create more complex reports, not only table based reports.
    I need to create for example invoice report with some dynamic fields (customer, invoice items...), another report can be for example some contract about cooperation with some dynamic fields (contract number, personal information ...).
    These reports will be mostly only text based without any table. See example bellow. How would you generate this kind of letter?
    "Hello <CUSTOMER_NAME>, we would like to offer our new product <PRODUCT_NAME> to you..."
    Where CUSTOMER_NAME a PRODUCT_NAME are prepared fields (from some database tables). It will be something very similar to Microsoft Word automatic mailings. User can generate many text based reports and save them as PDF.
    I need to find some web based product, that will be simple for users and can be integrated with APEX.

  • Report Engine API 4.0 (upgrade to 4.1)

    Hi,
    In the incoming days we will face the upgarde of our current SAP BI Platform (4.0 SP8) to next minor release (4.1). One of most challenging points is to ensure the proper behaviour of existing SDK customizations based on Report Engine API available at 4.0. I know that SAP is promoting use of Restful Web Services as a way to implement functionality previously delivered by JAVA API but my question is. Will current Report Engine API based developments work under in 4.1 release? In other words, has SAP planned an smooth transition from Report Engine API to restful Web Services scenario (compatibility scenario ) or code will have to be completely rewriten ?
    Thanks,

    Hi Alfons,
    As per the current situations Report Engines SDKs are still the same in BI 4.1 likewise in BI 4.0 all patches. You can perform the below functionalities with BI 4.x Report Engines SDK :
    - Export Webi Report to some other format.
    - View a Webi Report.
    - Partial drilling.
    - Save prompts in Webi reports etc.(Most of the functionalities are deprecated like schedule with prompts etc.)
    On the other hand with Webi Raylight REST SDKs you can leverage the workflow of legacy functional parity of BusinessObjects XI 3.1 Report Engines SDKs.
    By seeing as a future, it looks like most of the new development & enhancement are happens in the Webi REST world. So planning to rewrite the code in terms of REST SDKs is beneficial.
    As you are talking about the compatability, Report Engines Java SDKs are same upto BI 4.1 Patch 4 release. But it might be possible that in future Report Engines Java SDKs are totally deprecated. You can also refer the Object Model Digram of Report Engines SDKs which gives you list of deprecated interfaces, classes & methods.
    Hope it helps.
    Thanks,
    Shailendra

  • PDF report printing BI Publisher in APEX fails

    Hi,
    I have created page, in which, a BIP report will be generated on click of a text link.
    It was working fine earlier.
    APEX version is 4.1 which has BIP integrated.
    But today I am facing an issue when I click the link, to get the report.
    The report failed with below
    ORA-20001: The printing engine could not be reached because either the URL specified is incorrect or a proxy URL needs to be specified.

    Please let me know if this is the cause of the issue, as in I dint make any changes in the application. Not sure, why it was working 2 days before, and not now.
    The suggestion is to enable the network services on 11g oracle express.
    Please let me know, how should I go with this.
    Else please me know if there are any alternatives for this.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Crystal Reports form enhancements  (frmCrystalReports)

    Background
    Upgraded from 8.8 to 8.81 with Crystal Reports add-on.
    Not happy with ease of use of the CR add-on and loss of description field.  {CR=Crystal Reports}
    Summary
    Wanting enhancements to the frmCrystalReports form.
    Wanting assurance that frmCrystalReports form will be supported in future B1 versions.
    Wanting improvements to both the "old" and "new" B1 CR integration methods.
    Details
    frmCrystalReports form
    New columns for sap_cr_report_report table:
    version  - numeric - to help keep track of CR version.  ie dev test and live systems might have differing versions due to ongoing development
    report id - string - a short identifier of the CR.  ie with many reports a unique identifier is a necessity
    sort id - numeric or string - a sorting identifier so a list of CR can be ordered
    ReportDesc - increase column width.  eg 2000 characters
    Notes - string - allow CR Developer to add their own notes/comments for future reference.  The user and CR developer can have differing views on the report.
    Enhancements:
    Add scroll bars to the form.   There is none.  Only way to navigate a CR list is with the up/down arrow keys.
    Enable form resize.   There is none.  Most B1 forms you can maximise/expand.
    This is standard "windows" functionality, why was not this provided when created all those years ago?
    Add new columns from above.
    Make ReportName display its full width.  Only 50 of the 100 characters can be maintained in the form!
    Add CR sorting ability.   eg default=alphabetically on ReportName,  user selection=reportId and/or sortId
    Crystal Reports add-on
    Is a pain to use.  You could automate somewhat via mapping a CR directory structure to that of the modules.
    For example, put a CR in the Financials folder and B1 automatically picks up the name and makes that report available to the Finance module.
    Needs ability to show user description, version, report id, as per frmCrystalReports enhancements.  Just showing the CR name is not enough information.
    ps there is a bug with this form.  Background and Summary text above are set as bold but as you can see the trailing text is bold also.

    This is what I did to fix the non-sorting in the form by changing the table pk.
    -- backup original table
    exec sp_tables @table_name = "sap%";
    go
    select * into sap_cr_report_report_bup_20111101 from sap_cr_report_report;
    go
    exec sp_tables @table_name = "sap%";
    go
    -- change new pk columns to not nullable
    alter table sap_cr_report_report alter column ModuleUID char(20) not null;
    alter table sap_cr_report_report alter column ReportName nvarchar(50) not null;
    go
    -- create new pk
    alter table sap_cr_report_report add constraint scrr_pk primary key (ModuleUID, ReportName);
    -- alter table sap_cr_report_report drop constraint scrr_pk;
    go
    exec sp_pkeys sap_cr_report_report
    go
    :out stdout

  • Report Engine SDK Performance

    What are the recommended settings for businessobjects xI (version 11.5)
    Are there any tips to improve performance and reliability of the Report Engine SDK?
    It is very slow. We are using a Java client to interact with the dswsbobje libraries.
    Calls to " reportEngine.getDocumentInformation" are not consistently working even from the same program.
    We supply the prompt info parameters to generate the report.
    It works for the first 3 times, then fails a couple of times, and then works again.
    Sometimes a report load in 3 seconds, and other times it loads in 30 seconds or not at all.

    Why not open a case with SAP Support?
    Sincerely,
    Ted Ueda

  • Report Engine SDK: CommunicationException when accessing IReportEngine members

    Hello,
    I have installed BOXI 3.1 SP3, including the .NET SDK, and I am trying to use the Report Engine SDK part to navigate through a WebIntelligence document (analyse its structure, etc.), via a Console App.
    I built my console app targeting .NET framework 3.5, and compiled it in 32 bits mode (x86 platform). I can access the standard SDK without any problem and log in to the CMS then retrieve any InfoObject instances from my enterprise server.
    My problem occurs when I try to access my BusinessObjects.ReportEngine.IReportEngine instance's members. Sample lines of code:
    SessionMgr sessionManager = new SessionMgr();
    EnterpriseSession session = sessionManager.Logon(login, password, cmsName, authType);
    InfoStore infoStore = (InfoStore)session.GetService("InfoStore");
    UserInfo userInfos = session.UserInfo;
    string logonToken = session.LogonTokenMgr.CreateWCAToken("", 1, -1);
    ReportEngines reportEngines = new ReportEngines(logonToken);
    IReportEngine reportEngine = (IReportEngine)reportEngines.getService(ReportEngineType.WI_ReportEngine);
    bool test = reportEngine.IsReady; // or any other member of reportEngine, like reportEngine.OpenDocument(...)
    An exception of type 'BusinessObjects.ReportEngine.CommunicationException' occured.

    What do you suggest?

    Hi,
    Enterprise / ReportEngine SDK is not supported / tested / compatible with desktop / console apps.
    Could you try the same logic with a web services sdk, as WebServices SDk is the only SDK which could be used to develop thick client apps.

  • Is it possible to use the JAVA Report Engine SDK to modify DESKI reports?

    Post Author: Nadine
    CA Forum: JAVA
    Hi, is it possible to add a complex filter to a DESKI report using the JAVA report engine sdk?
    In the developer tutorials for this API, I've only found references to WEBI in terms of modifying reports, though it seems to be possible to view DESKI reports with this sdk.
    I am a bit confused in terms of the scope of this API and how I would use it in regard to DESKI.
    Many thanks for any suggestions!

    CA Forum: JAVA
    Current (XI R2) version of ReportEngine API only supports refreshing/viewing functionality for Desktop Intelligence documents.  Document modification/creation is only supported with Web Intelligence documents.  Queries aren't modifiable for Deski using ReportEngine API - you can only do so using Desktop Intelligence Reporter SDK, which is COM based.Sincerely,Ted Ueda

  • Report template substitution strings?  (APEX 2.2.0)

    Hi all,
    I am trying to customize a report template. I would like to know if there is a way to get the sort link that goes into the column headers. The next page and previous page links have the #LINK# substitution string. #COLUMN_HEADER# doesn't give me enough flexibility.
    Would I have to use a named column template for this? (I don't have much idea what that is. I read about it on Scott Spendolini's blog entry on "Click in a Row".)
    Cheers!

    Hello,
    >> I could using JavaScript rewrite the column header to be what I want after the page renders, but I'd rather it show up the way I want in the first place
    Can you be more specific about what is it that you want? The report engine allows you to use custom headings. Can’t that feature help you achieve what you want?
    >> Is there a list of the substitutions strings that are available to the column header?
    The substitution strings you see on the templates populated by the APEX engine with snippets of code you can’t control. You can define your own substitution strings, in the application definition page (under shared components), set them with the code you need, and use them throughout the application, including in templates. The way to use them is a bit different – instead of the “#STRING# syntax, you need to use the “&STRING.” Syntax.

    Arie.

  • Integration with a Reporting Engine Web Service

    I want to use a separate reporting engine for my reports. That is, use APEX to perform the filtering and parameter settings and preview the result in APEX. But the final formatted output will use a more complex layout. Sorry, cannot use BI Publisher or PL/PDF (license issues). Other FOP solution isn't sufficient as well because I'm planning to centralized our reports.
    I already tried using Jasper Reports (also BIRT and Pentaho,they seem identical to me) Web Service but with no luck. I don't want to invest too much time in learning these tools since I don't know if it will ever work with APEX.
    We do have SQL Server 2005 but I'm currently learning its reporting services. I'm a MS Access developer and already have enough of it. Anybody got a suggestion?
    Thanks

    Hi Mertz,
    Well you have to bear in mind that Oracle have made it incredibly simple to integrate APEX with BIP to produce some visually stunning reports that contain data that can be pretty complex.
    However...obviously you need to stump up the money for BIP to get that level of ease/functionality.
    So, what you're really asking is: is there a way I can produce output just as complex as BIP without the price tag of BIP?
    If that's the question the answer is definitely yes, you can use FOP. Anything you can do using BIP (and the BIP Desktop) tool you can do with FOP (or pretty much everything, I haven't found any real big exceptions to the rule).
    However, the 'price' you pay with FOP is that it's another layer that you need to learn about (unlike diving into the BIP desktop plugins to design your form). However you do get complete control over the layout of your exports.

  • Link in my customized Report Template doesn't work – Apex 3.1

    I created a report template based on columns of my report
    My query report is:
    SELECT MEM_NAS ID, MEM_NOM NAME, MEM_DATE_NAIS BIRTH
    FROM ACMT_MEMBRE;
    My customized report template have this Row Template definition:
    <tr onclick="redirect('f?p=&APP_ID.:6:&SESSION.:::6:P6_NAS:#ID#');">
    <td #ALIGNMENT# class="t16data_edit">#NAME#</td>
    <td #ALIGNMENT# class="t16data_edit">#BIRTH#</td>
    </tr>
    This would redirect to the page 6 when user click anywhere on a row but it doesn’t work.
    I have this error message:
    CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');"> CHECK$01');">
    I realized that problem is caused by #ID# because if I hardcode this ID, it works.
    How can my report template get the “ID” from my query report ?
    Apex version: 3.1

    <td #ALIGNMENT# class="t16data_edit">#BIRTH#</td>

    Is the report template definitely of type Named Column (row template) (defined on App Builder page 4000:4654) and not Generic Columns (column template) (defined on page 400:258)?
    Note that the <tt>#ALIGNMENT#</tt> substitution string is not supported in named column templates. Set column alignment explicitly using HTML attributes in the template, or use CSS.
    {code}Where do you see this? It looks like there's a mismatch between the report columns returned by the query and those referenced in the report template. Or the data contains unsafe HTML characters that aren't being escaped.
    Yes, my report query has a column called ID and it's set as Hidden. This could be the problem. In a report based on a named column template any columns referenced in the template must be +shown+ in the report, even if (as in this case) the column value is not visible to the user: the positioning of the <tt>#ID#</tt> column placeholder in the <tt>onclick</tt> attribute rather than in a table cell is what makes it "hidden". *The Show checkbox for the ID column must be checked.*
    From the gobbledygook being generated it looks like there could be a row selector checkbox column in this report as well? Named column row templates must include substitution placeholders for every shown column. It's also advisable to keep the columns in the same order in the SQL, report column attributes and row template.
    Something like
    {code}
    &lt;tr onclick="redirect('f?p=&APP_ID.:6:&SESSION.:::6:P6_NAS:#ID#');"&gt;
    <td class="t16data_edit">#CHECK$01#</td>
    <td class="t16data_edit">#NAME#</td>
    <td class="t16data_edit">#BIRTH#</td>
    </tr>
    {code}
    I realized that problem is caused by #ID# because if I hardcode this ID, it works.
    How can my report template get the “ID” from my query report ?If the above doesn't help then the easiest way to troubleshoot this would be for you to upload the app to apex.oracle.com and post guest developer credentials for the workspace so we can see the whole thing: template, SQL, and report attributes. Otherwise we're likely to and up with a lot of tedious to and fro here posting bits of code and attribute values.
