Report: K8N Neo3-F Cool boot problem!!!!

Hi all,
I've got Cool boot problem on my new K8N Neo3-F. The power is often turned off suddenly just after I turned on the power switch. All components are shutted down while the power led blink. It's unable to turn off completely by pushing power switch for awhile. I usualy have to disconect the power cord then clear cmos and cool boot again.
This problem seem to occur more oftenly when using SATA HDD. Should it be attituted to a bug bios?

Something along what you already have on +3.3v/+5v but 20A or more on +12v (single +12v PSU model) .
But when the time comes to replace PSU it's wise to get one that has enough power that will serve the next build or upgrade also .
Not leaving you again in the same situation you are now one more time down the line .
Note that HD's are notirious power eaters .They all may have nice numbers from the manufacturers for write/read consumption
but it's not many that specifies spinup consumption which always are altleast 2-3 times the amount of read/write power demands.
Tagan 2power/2force is nice and is applicable to both 20/24 pins systems and has the ability to run the +12v line as one combined or dual .
They also come in different sizes (max wattage) .

  • K8N Neo3 won't boot

I have put together a barebones kit that will not boot.  Everything is new and I have double checked everything to make sure it's installed correctly.  When I power the machine up the fans on the motherboard, video card, and power supply all come on.  The cpu fan comes on sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.  It will start another time and stop after about 15 or 20 seconds.  I'm at my wits end over this one.  I have built several boxes before and have never run into anything like this.  The PSU came with the case.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

tcsenter, this has been discussed very often in this forum. 15A is NOT enough, period. If you want to insist on this, well be my guest. But don't come crying if your psu burns up half your system. You have been warned about that now.
It has been "discussed", but those discussions NEVER withstand any scrutiny when I enter them - period.  Everyone dives out the back door or threatens to have me banned.  Why?
Because I PROVE my argument using the very same "simple math" you cite.  Unless you are referring to some new fuzzy math that wasn't taught when I went to grade school?  I get my numbers from the manufacturer datasheets, which are absolute worst case scenarios that can't be found outside of AMD's R&D lab, or actual load measurements using reasonably precise methods:
    K8N Neo3 core logic = 0.5A
    AMD Athlon64 3200+ = 9A MAX
    GeForce 7300GS = 1A MAX
    Maxtor 120GB = 2A (spin-up)
    Liteon 16x DVD RW = 2A (spin-up)
    Cooling Fans x 2 = 0.5A
    Total +12V load = 15A
This assumes 100% loading, which is impossible during POST and until the operating system begins loading.

  • K8N Neo3 Board + Kingston DDR Problem

Hi. I have this new configuration.
    AMD Athlon 64 2800+
    MSI K8N Neo3 Motherboard
    2 Stick 512 MB Kingston PC-3200 CL3  DDR (Model : KVR400X64C3A/512)
I couldn't get both of the Rams working together. If I install just one ram everything is normal, I can boot to WinXP.
If  both rams are installed, it sometimes crash on the boot screen or 1 min after going into WinXP.
I think I don't have the DRAM timing values. Because the crash time changes when I play with dram settings.
I also installed this to a PC which does not have detailed DRAm timing settings. I works just fine after 5 hours.
In Kingston's web site the rams are in the compatiblity list. I also checked the DRAMs with memtest86. No problem.
May anybody lead me to correct DRAM timing values for this board and DRAMS ?

    hi. thanks for the reply.
I found those information that you gave last night when I was trying to solve the problem by myself, but I think I couldn't map those values to the fields in the BIOS DRAM Configuration menu. Because the best I could do is to be able to login to XP for a minute and it crashed.    So It will be perfect if u can tell me which values should be set at the screen capture below.

  • K8N Neo2 Windows XP Boot problems

I've recently built a new machine based on the K8N Neo 2  & Athlon 64 3500 and am having intermittant problems during boot  into Windows XP.
Basically the machine seems to hang just as it gets to the 'Windows XP' logo.  The screen looks blank, but if you look very carefully the logo is displayed very faintly.  I have tried connecting the startup disk to both SATA1 and SATA3 with the same results as at first I thought it may be some kind of driver problem.  I didn't have to install any SATA drivers during the XP install which surprised me.
I have also run Memtest86 on the two sticks of 512Mb PC3200 Geil Ram which seemed to test OK.
Once running the machine is stable, its just annoying that it may take 2 or 3 tries to get it up and running.
Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
The full spec of the machine is as follows:
    K8N Neo 2
    Athlon 64 3500
    Geil Value PC3200 512Mb x2
Maxtor Diamond Max 9 80Gb (Boot Disk)
    Maxtor Diamond Max 10 200Gb
    Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600XT
    Andi

I will not install the nForce IDE drivers on the (I guess soon) reinstall. I've read that the PS/2 keyboard also could be the badguy in this weird boot problem but I cant understand why and how the keyboard could add time to the bootup sequence only sometimes, I guess that it has something to do with the XP keyboard driver ??..
Anyone with any other tips is welcome. Other than this weird problem my system runs perfect. MSI Core Center now tells me that my CPU temp is 45% (CPU speed 1004) (Downloading stuff but not doing anything else), CPU speed is according to XP 1.79Ghz and I use the Cool 'n' Quiet function, On what temp should I start to become alarmed and is there some way to setup something in the bios to shut down or warn me when and if the CPU gets to hot ?..
Thanks for helping a new   MSI user out

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum cold boot problem with 165 opteron?

I have this board and have a cold boot problem with my opteron. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Its starting to get very anooying.
    K8N NEO4 Platinum
    165 opty dual core
    2X1GB Ballistix PC4000
    160GB sata2
    7800GTX
    X-Fi platinum
    600 watt seasonic PSU

Well I am running them at the rated speed of 250 and the rated timings of 3-4-4-10 on the rated 2.8 volts. Ballistix have been known to die quickly when you throw to many volts at them for some reason. I dont get the cold boot problem with the OCZ. Once I finally get it to boot with the Ballistix it works just fine but the next morning I play hell to get it to boot again. I dont even get the main screen to let me get into bios. It just stays black. I have done all kinds of stress testing and ran memtest with no problems. I am really at a loss here.

  • K8N Neo4 Platnum/SLI Boot Problem!

Today we had a brownout and the computer shut off which is to be expected. Now, It will show the screen where it allows for the choice of Bios <DEL> or Switch to POST <TAB>. And it hangs there. I looked at the Basic guide for the LED configurations and I get:
    1:Green
    2:Red
    3:Green
    4:Red
    Which on the guide says:
    BIOS Sign On
    - This will start showing information about logo, processor brand name, etc...
The next step of startup is the memory check. I tried switching that but still no booting.
    Please Help!

it is possible that some of the components is damaged due to static electricity.
yes. It may causes a problems if your mobo is short circuit it may effects others hardware too. Gd luck.

    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=110171.0

Ups, I messed up. Thanks for moving this to the correct forum!
Yes, I'm using 1st Dimm slot. I cleared CMOS with and without the power cord, with and without the battery, and every way possible. I even held the button down for 2 minutes.
PSU is Vitsuba 450W. The 12V rail has 20A.
I don't have a better PSU. Should I buy one?
Already tried barebone setup. Just didn't know what it was called. Reseated CPU but didn't change anything. There are no bent pins.
How this happened. I was working in windows and it BSOD. I reset and it didn't boot at first time, but after several tries it finally booted. That was last week. The problem repeated once again yesterday, so I decided to do a clean reinstall of Windows, just in case. So I had some troubles to boot again but it booted ok after some time. Installed windows, drivers, updates, apps, etc and everything was fine. I switched off the system yesterday at night. Today the pc won't boot anymore. So, here I am!
Thanks for your assistance and don't hesitate to ask me some more questions!

  • MSI K8N/Neo4-SLI Cold Boot problem

Sup guys, my system won't restart whenever I crank the HTT to 239+. I heard it has something to do with the nForce4 chipset but I don't know how to fix it. I have the latest BIOS, chipset driver, video drivers, the whole she-bang, but still nothing. I'm currently running my 3000+ Venice @ 2151mHz (239x9) w/ a 4x HyperTransport multiplier (1.450vCore), 512mb x2 Corsair Valueselect @ 166 Mem index (default voltage) 2.5-3-3-8. Thanks.

I used to have corsiar vs and it wont go much higher for you...the stix just crap out after a while.  If you want more, you have to go with more expensive mem stix like crucial ballistix or patriot xblk/other tccd mem.  Just my 2 cents.

    Hi.
I built computer for my friend with these specs:
    AMD64 3000+ socket 754
MSI K8N Neo3 nForce4(it's Gold edition, no clue what's so special in it... no msi sticker included, say hello to marketing guys from me  )

    Western Digital 80GB ATA
    TEAC DVD-RW
    some 350W psu
and the problem is the cpu temperature and kinda noisy fan... newest core center reports 41-42 degrees and 1390rpm when computer is idle, on mine it's around 35 degrees
and 2800rpm. amd drivers are installed, power saving settings are set to minimum cool'n'quiet is enabled, d.o.t. is disabled, but still, core center reports speed as 210x10 = 2100mhz and it should be less when idle... 1000mhz or 800mhz they say... another interesting thing is that core center reports north bridge fan speed as low, while bios health status
reports 7500 (!!!) rpm. what's wrong? please help.

  • Can't boot WinXPpro on K8N Neo3 gold

Setting up new mobo and cpu, keeping all old peripheral hardware, including hard drive with XP Pro.
Old board was ASUS A7S333 with SIS745 chipset, new board is K8N Neo3 gold (MS-7135 ATX) with nVIDIA nForce4-4X chipset and AMD K8 cpu.  The hard drive is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus8 40Gb with two partitions, one an old WinME and the other is WinXP pro.
The system posts, default selects the WinXP, and tries to boot the os but fails with a stop code of 7B "Inaccessible boot device".  The drive itself is fine, ran chkdsk diagnostics, even connected it as secondary drive on third machine and it comes up ok.
Reading other forum topics it appears that the change of chipsets from old mobo to new requires a driver change for the IDE controller.  One forum topic "Can't boot Win2K SP4 on K8N Neo2" indicates that the Recovery console helped to fix the problem by reverting back to a plain vanilla version of a Microsoft driver but there were no explicit instructions on how to do this.  I can get the Recovery console up from my XP installation CD but its not obvious what to do from there.
It took me a long time to get the WinXP system configured, patched, tweaked, apps installed, patched.....  so I'd hate to start all over.
Anybody know how to pull this off?
    thx

  • K8N Neo3 ps/2 problem

    Hello
I have a brand new K8N Neo3 with the following setup:
    A64 3400
    2Gb DDR400
    MSI 7900GTO
    SB Audigy LS
    Tekram DC395U
    Tekram U3W (boot device)
When I use my good old keytronic keyboard on PS/2 connector, it work for some times then I get keyboard errors mostly for all boot.
I have updated the bios to V1.7, disable/enable USB keyboard support, reset bios, not solution: work for some boot then dies.
The keyboard is working ok on another setup, other PS/2 keyboard get the same issue.
When I use USB keyboard, no problem.
When I use the keyboard on USB/PS2 adapter, it works.
Funny thing is when I plug usb and ps2, it boots, but the ps2 keyboard could be either running fine or not, blinking at every key entry.
I couldn't find USB keyboard with the same quality as the keytronic, and the USB to PS2 adapter is not a solution since it is unusable for fast typing and games (key repeat issues).

First check that the ground tab on the case IO Shield is making good contact with the mbrd PS/2 socket housing.  Sometimes older keyboards will just not work well with newer systems but if the keyboard is newish, you have a valid complaint for an RMA.  Having said that I've had problems with a Neo4-F's PS/2 mouse port - suddenly started just freezing the mouse after an hour or so of use; switched to a different mouse and same thing.  I can't help thinking there's something flakey about the PS/2 controller which MSI uses, since it's an issue which keeps coming up here.

  • Problems with MSI K8N-Neo3 and Command Queing.

I had some problems with two computers, based on the MSI K8N-Neo3 mainboard - they wouldn't boot into Windows after installing the drivers for the graphiccards. Before the breakdown of the forum, some people suggested that I was using to small PSUs. In the meantime I've solved the problem, by disabling the Command Queing feature in the drivers. Seems there may be a problem with the MSI board, and Maxtor SATA drives with Command Queing.
Key system components for the two computers:
    AMD Sempron 3000+
    MSI K8N-Neo3
    1 GB Kingston PC3200 DDR-SDRAM
MSI GeForce 6600GT or MSI GeForce 6600LE graphics
Maxtor 120 GB SATA disk (6L120M0)
    Sony DVD-RW drive
Anyway, I wanna say thanks for the quick answers...

Thats not what I read (assuming this is the same correct model)
    420W double unit
    DC O/P Load Max
    +5V 42 Amp.
    +12V 16 Amp.
    +3.3V 28 Amp.
    -5V 0.5 Amp.
    -12V 0.8 Amp.
    +5VSB 2 Amp.
Agreed that one is 420W, but is that it or not?
