Report on what time a computer crashes
I'm getting power failures on random days, always off office hours. I'm trying to find where I can get info on what time the computer crashed.
I have it hooked up to a UPS so it's long enough to let the battery drain, and it's only one corner in the office. Other corners seem to get power fluxes but never long enough to drain their UPS's. I was considering that it might be the UPS but there have been several different ones in this corner and all had the same problem once in a while, and figured it would have been happening all day long, not just when no one is here.
In talking to the electrician he said it would be helpful if I could get a crash repot and find out what time of the day it keeps happening, so I was thinking I could find that on my iMac somewhere. I've found the Console crash reports and the Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports logs but I'm not sure what I'm reading, seems to mostly be application crashes, not whole system crashes.
Any hints would be awesome! Thanks for the help.
Amy
Open the Console application (/Applications/Utilities/Console). IN the left hand column look in these places
for the crash log. You can also look in system log for the reboot and possibly the messages from the UPS (if you have it connected to the system) for when the power first went out.
If the UPS is connected to the system you can set the parameters for how to react to a power outage in System Preferences->Energy Saver; UPS. This way at least the system won;t crash.

Why does my computer crash to blue screen with message when Photoshop is open?
This happened 3-4 times when I was using the trial version and I wasn't sure which program from the trials that was doing it, but it started after I downloaded and used the Adobe Clound trials so I stopped using them. Eventually I went ahead and upgraded to the subcription and have been using Illustrator and Muse for a few days now and have not had a problem until today. I had Photoshop open and minimized, as well as Illustrator, and walked away from my desk. When I returned, the screen was blue with the Windows "shut down to prevent further damage" screen. I have a photo of the message. I realized that I had been using Photoshop the last few times this happened also. It never happened before I tried this software and stopped when I stopped using the trial.
I contacted support and chose to have someone call me back due to the wait. 15 minutes later, I got a call back from India and exlplained this. He got my phone number and asked me to hold while he got someone to help me. ONE HOUR AND 20 MINUTES later someone from India came on and I explained it all over again. He said he was going to check into it and 5 minutes later I was DISCONNECTED. No one called back and there is no option for Adobe, but to call back and start the process ALL OVER AGAIN. From what I see in these forums, it happens all the time and is serious problem with Adobe.I would never do business with a company with this type of horrible support and don't think I will continue my subscription with them. I am a graphic designer and do not have the time for computer crashes and support that does not care. Thanks, Bill. Your response has been the most helpful. I have not yet tried the steps in your articles, but have a little more info that may help narrow it down. However, it has not happened for a couple weeks. I run a large CAD progam that also has never caused this issue.
The blue death screen occurs only when PS is open and when the computer goes to the screen saver. When I wake my screen this message is there:
"A problem has been detected an windows has been shut down to prevent further damage to your computer.
The problem seems to be caused by the following file: win32k.sys
PAGE-FAULT-IN-NONPAGED-AREA
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. I this is a new installation, ask you hardware of software manufacturer fo any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable such components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

Beginning dump, blah blah blah.
After this happenend 2-3 time after installing the PS trial, it was obvious that it was the only software change I had made. I stopped using it and went back to using my PS4 and the blue screen never happened again...until I purchase my subscription and used it again. I don't know if any of this helps narrow down what I can test, but you have given me the most knowledgeable feedback. Thanks again. -
Only 1 project disappeared long after computer crashed.
The problem:
I'm sure many people have asked this before, but I was working in iMovie , and I have several projects, and only one of them went missing. The other day the computer crashed, but when it came to only a few minutes of editing were lost. Then, I created a new project and now that I am checking, one entire project is missing. (the one that the computer crashed on ) Is this irretrievable? Note I can function with but am unaccustomed to Macs and iMovie.
Things I've done:
I've rebooted and rechecked under the event it should be filed under, as well as under [all projects]. I also checked around in my dropbox folder, but it's nowhere to be seen. One thing that just happened was I'm not sure what was pressed but I somehow created a project (by a different means) under the correct event, so it has the correct.
Info:
iMovie 10.0.3
OSX 10.9.2
When it crashed the screen went gray and it had words I don't remember it was the first time the computer crashed for me.
I am not the administrator and do not have the permission to install things. (Not the owner of the computer)

Computer crash importing songs from CD/Library to iTunes
I use Windows XP. For a while I have had a problem with my computer crashing completely every time I try to import songs from either a CD or the Library although it will let me import 1-3 songs at a time before it crashes so previously that is what I did. I was advised to wipe my hard drive and then reinstall iTunes which should resolve the issue. NO IT HASN'T.
I had to wipe my hard drive yesterday and reinstall everything because of other issues. Downloaded the new iTunes and guess what - YES - THE COMPUTER CRASHED while importing songs from a now very small library because I want to get this problem resolved BEFORE I connect my iPod to transfer songs back to the iTunes Library
Any help will be much appreciated
Packard Bell Windows XPThere are lots of things to try before wiping your hard drive again, because since you just did that yesterday, it wan't really effective, was it? So I think it won't be any better today.
I believe somethin's gone wrong with your CD drive, personally.
Desktop > right-click on My Computer > Manage >Device Manager
Over on the right, expand your CD/DVD ROM drives. Highlight each one right-click and choose uninstall
Do NOT restart your PC yet.
In the same Device MAnager list, find the IDE/ATA ATAPI controllers
right-click and uninstall both the primary and seconday IDE channels.
Now you will have to restart your PC. It will take a bit ,onger than usual to come up because it has to go find that hardware stuff and reinstall it.
Then restart your PC one more time when the message comes up.
Now can you rip CDs in iTunes? -

Just installed Mavericks and my computer crashes 4-5 times a day now.
Hi. Just a few days ago I finally gave in and upgraded to Mavericks (10.9.5) from 10.6.8 as there was some software that I needed to use that necessitated the upgrade. Since I've upgraded, my MacBook Pro crashes at least 4-5 times daily. I am not doing anything unusual when it occurs. Usually typing an email, or switching between tabs in Safari or clicking save on a word file. In another post I was introduced to an app called Etrecheck which seemed to me to be a fine way to show all the Mac geniuses on this forum whats going with my computer (unfortunately I am not savvy enough to look through it and understand what's going on). I've posted the report below. Maybe someone can help me figure out what's causing my computer to crash?
The next time it happens I can also copy the report that shows up after the crash and post it as well. Many thanks in advance.
Problem description:
Since I downloaded Mavericks (10.9.5) my computer crashes randomly 4-5 times per day.

I recently bought a new computer becouse my old computer crashed. Now I can not sync my itunes account. I get an error when I try. It says that itunes will erase my phone content and replace with what is on the phone. I do not want to lose all my stuff so what do I do?
This is how it works.
Iphone will sync with one computer at a time. Syncing to another will erase the current content.
Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one. -
working in adobe illustrator - computer crashed - will not soft boot or reset PRAM - should i reinstall from CD snow leopard 10.6.3? I have an extra hard drive in my MAC with time machine on it set to do auto back ups. How do i recover ?
Well first you have to figure out what is wrong with the machine and solve that problem first.
Your post is very vague on what occured, and there are many types of "crashes" it really depends upon what see on the screen and what the hardware does, we can't see it to tell you, so you have to tell us.
I suggest you run through these user tips and provide more information about your hardware.

If this is going way over your head, there are local PC/Mac techs that will assist you for a fee, Apple only does hardware repairs and is advised to use them if you discover it is, especially if under warranty/AppleCare.
Hard drive and RAM upgrades can be handled yourself or by a outside tech in many older models of Mac, but don't expect Apple to cover the new parts.

My Computer crashes (blue screen of death) each time I open adobe acrobat 9 pro
I sent the dump file to my IT person and below is response:
Both of your crash dump listings list the fault of your crashes as FNPLicensingService.exe This is normally installed as part of an Adobe product (Reader,Photoshop, etc.) but it could also be part of someone else's product. (The code is actually written by FLEXnet Publisher and sold to other companies). Have you installed any new Adobe products?
If XP machine try START->RUN then SERVICES.MSC and enter. If Win7 do START then SERVICES.MSC and it should find it and click it to run it. When the Services windows open look down the list and see if its listed, if so then see if it is running. If its running it should have a highlight to stop it, stop it and see (1) what program quits running and (2) see if it starts automatically again (check it every so often through services.msc).
Should be something installed recently installed it or is conflicting with it
I have uninstalled all programs from the past month. I tried to uninstall acrobat 9 and the computer crashed each time. Any Ideas?Let me known if, deleting photos from the iPhone camera, the problem disappears. I have this behaviour and I suspect it is a Iphone serious bug...

I have an ipod nano (1st series) and my computer crashed, i lost my itunes and i am worried if i plug in my ipod then all the songs on it will be deleted..What should i do?
SSolo129,
There's an answer to your question but first it's time for a little lecture - if it makes a difference, I don't feel any better about this than you do. ; - )
I hope you take this unfortunate situation as an opportunity to learn a very important lesson: Back up your iTunes library as soon as you can after resolving this situation because right now you are only one glitch of your iPod away from losing your music entirely.
Many people come to the Discussions having lost their music in just such situations and, believe me, it's not a happy time for anyone.
If you place any importance on your playlists and the data they depend on, make sure to include the iTunes Library files in your back-up regimen as well.
Anyways, that's the lecture. The answer to your problem should be found in Zevoneer's post .
Good Luck! But once you have the music back on your computer, remember:
Your music is valuable - please back it up! -
My computer crashed and I have to buy a new one. What happens to my Contacts, Photos, etc when i use the new computer? I do not have an iTunes backup.
Do you have the iCloud set up? If you don't you need to buy a third party software that will do it for you when you plug your phone into the new computer. You can google: iPad/iPhone/iPod to Computer Transfer. You have to pay for the software but it's really a life saver and you get free updates for life. It'll save you a lot of pain and suffering in the future. I've used it many times.

My last computer crashed and my new computer doesn't have a disk drive. I downloaded the CS package, put in my serial number, but during install is is still requiring a disk. What do I do?
is your cs6 a upgrade?
if so, after entering your cs6 serial number you will be prompted to select the qualifying product from a dropdown. select the product you own and enter its serial number.
after entering each serial number at the correct time installation will proceed.
if no, what files (names and extensions) did you download and what are the file sizes shown on your hd? -
What does it mean when you computer crashes and when you turn it back on it shows you a blank blue screen with a little folder and a question mark in the middle? It's a old imac from 1997.
I don't have original discs that it came with.
Then you still can use the second option with the keyboard combo I posted, called "resetting the PRAM."
Also when you way hold the c key down do you mean turn computer off and turn back on holding the c key?
Yes, or you can simply restart. As you don't have the CDs, this isn't on the plate any more.
The internal backup battery is not expensive and, in most iMacs is user-replacable. If yours has a tray-loading optical drive like this one:
it takes a major teardown to replace the internal battery. If this is the case, you'd be better off to leave the computer plugged in all the time; that eliminates the main reason for having a working battery.
If it has a slot-loading optical drive like this one:
things are much easier. The battery is visible through the RAM access door on the bottom of the computer case. The manual:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iMacG3_2000UserManual.PDF
has sketches of how to access the RAM and therefore the backup battery. Unfortunately, the pdf on the manual goes up sideways on-screen and the RAM instructions are pretty deep into the manual. It's probably easier to scroll (for a while) to the section on adding RAM and print the applicable pages.
When you work on the battery, some sort of non-conductive pliers or large tweezer or forceps help unless you have tiny fingers. Make sure to note the polarity of the old battery and install the new one in the same orientation.
The battery itself is readily available. If price is no oblect, you can get it for a small rasom from Radio Shack Store ("Tandy" outside the US) as part number 23-026.
Online, they are dirt-cheap even after adding shipping. I buy backup batteries form this outfit:

Please helpTake each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 10. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. -
