Reporting in Flex
Hi,
I am new to Flex and I have been assigned to work on some reporting task (web user should be able to download the reports in pdf, excel and word).
I was wondering if flex has any inbuilt support for reporting. If no i want to use jasper reports but not sure how to integrate it with flex.
Does anyone have suggestions for me. Also, could anyone point me to some good tutorials on this?
Thanks,
Hello,
I can share with you our process. We have used Jasper Professional in the past, however, we had to do it via XML file transfers, with a content reload via an http post service. Flex is fairly weak in complex analytics out of the box, however, you can create some very nice custom analytics using the Flex Data Visualization add-on.

Creating/Displaying reports with Flex 2.0

do reporting from Flex 2.0 Apps - say maybe in PDF format that uses

Interactive medical report with Flex/AIR, XML, U3D and PDF
Hello,
I am computer science student and during my master thesis I want to program an interactive medical report which should include some 3D models (U3D) and which should provide the following options:
Interactive manipulation of the 3D models
Typing in a structured medical report
Loading of a XML file with additional information
Loading of medical image data (jpg images)
At best, only one pdf file as resulting report
And: A nice user interface (I like the interface elements of Flex...)
I think, the best way is a pdf file which includes all the needed data. The problem is that I don't know exactly what software combination fulfills my requirements... I read some things about Adobe Flex and AIR and the U3D format and I suppose, the great interface builder "Flash Builder 4" might be useful to generate a nice user interface. BUT: I was not able to find out, how to include U3D in Flex/AIR.
Then I found the nice pdf library iText (http://itextpdf.com/examples/index.php?page=chapters) which is able to produce a pdf file from a swf file and to include a U3D-model with an additional JavaScript file for manipulations.
BUT again: If I have a swf flash file with the nice user interface (generated with the Flash Builder), how can I access the U3D model in the final pdf document? Imagine: I click on a "rotate" button in the swf and then the U3D-Model in the pdf should rotate...
Ok, as you can see, it is a complex szenario.
My questions summarized:
What, in your opinion, is the best technology for my task? Flex? AIR?
How can I import the U3D-models? Should I use PaperVision, Sandy3D or something else?
Is there a way to save user inputs directly in the pdf file, or as new pdf file or as xml file?
What is the best way to produce the user interface? Flashbuilder, or maybe a html container with "normal" html interface elements and then the events communication between JavaScript and ActionScript?
How can I export all the stuff to one pdf document? Should I use iText?
Best regards,
StevenThanks for making my point - perfect is the enemy of good. We tolerate less capable, less perfect system that are in place now, because of the false expectation that it should be perfect. Incremental improvements are rejected, because they are not perfect. Even an imperfect algorithm can find 'Broken' as a common thread in your example, and highlight them for the clinician to evaluate their impact on the current treatment. This no less likely to miss the connection than a clinician trying to scan through handwritten notes, in the 5 - 10 minutes he/she has to interact with the patient and determine what to do.
Because of legal concerns, incremental but imperfect improvements don't get implemented, so nothing ever moves forward. Imagine if after the Wright Brothers first flight, no improvements were considered acceptable unless they completely eliminated the risk of failure - there wouldn't be any airlines to go bankrupt today!
For the most part, IT has focused on activities where 'perfect' is achievable. Accounting in its various forms have been the primary focus of most IT systems. In that area, the vocabulary is very limited, well defined, and consistent. A debit is always a debit, and a credit is always a credit. Medicine is completely different. It is much larger in scope, poorly defined, the vocabularies are mostly non-existent, and where they exist are incomplete and inconsistent. Despite the huge leaps forward in the last century, there is still more unknown than known about how and why the body works. This environment makes most individuals trained in IT uncomfortable. Until we learn how to deal with 'fuzzy', Healthcare IT is going to be limited to the billing and collection functions that it mostly accomplishes today.

Hello, and thank you, collectively, for all the online and
community support. Flex is simply awesome! 2 months ago I was doing
my first installation and I now have a pretty exciting demo...
except for one thing.
Reports!
Reading post, after post, after post... this seems to be a
dark spot on an otherwise brilliant star. I've gotta believe quite
a few developers are doing what I am, so let's get to it...
I bring a dataset into my Flex (not AIR) app and allow the
user to manipulate it, filtering down to exactly what they want to
see... ADGs and charts, detail where appropriate. The climax of
this story is the report... but, there is no report! I really need
to take my client-side XML and transform it to something pretty and
printable.
I also need to do this client side, so solutions that require
an app server are off the table (I've done so much without an app
server, just a webserver and CGI, that I'd hate to add one just for
reports.)
ClearBI looks pretty cool, but the user community is hard to
find (or non-existent), and it's not real clear how to make it work
in our architecture.
I could use xsl:fo, if I could get my XML datasets from the
Flash sandbox to the browser (with a ProcessingInstruction). Seems
that may not be possible.
So my options seem to be to turn to an external reporting
solution. With as awesome as Flex has been so far, it seem this
should not be necessary.
I'm hoping to find something that produces paginated reports,
with embedded charts, that can export to PDF and Excel, all from
the client.
Has anyone found or created something like this?
TIA!trivinci,
I have read that the latest version of Crystal Reports
supports integration with Flex (see
http://www.crystalreports.co.uk/assets/Download%20Centre/SAP%20Xcelsius.pdf
or
http://www.sap.com/solutions/sapbusinessobjects/sme/reporting/crystalreports/featuresfunct ions/index.epx
for example) which might help you,

Generating size report for Flex project
How do I do this? I would like to see a breakdown of asset
and code sizes like the one shown in Flash when "generate size
report" is selected...thanks!Not that I would recommend this in most case's but if the
PDF's do not need to be dynamic you could use something like PDF995
and send your page to it as a formatted print job. I had a client
that wanted printouts from Filemaker in PDF so they could Email
them to a list. Had to be automated so we just set up a print
script in filemaker to print to a PDF converter. Don't think it was
actually PDF995 and I do not remember what it was but I mention
PDF995 because I use it at home. You just need something where the
API allows you to specify the location to save too and the name of
the file as part of the printjob. Send the files to a standard
location on your server and trap the name of the file in a
database. Bingo. Easy PDF's.
Of course the alternate option is to auto generate your chart
as a web viewable formatted for print version. As it changes notify
your users with an email link of where to view it and then let them
print their own PDF using PDF995 or other such utilities if they
want to.
And then get back to the Game of Half-Life2 Death Match going
on in the server room. -

Hello Flex Forum,
I must admit some curisoity about Flex. Seems Adobe is really
pushing it. Kind of reminds me of FoxPro and Access. There are so
many differerent ways to do things web-wise these days, I am
wondering why a developer might choose Flex over Flash
(actionscript), or some of the other (like dojo) language or
environment that does similar things. I am currently working on an
e-learning project that need to be CD based, because the company I
work for cannot support a server to allow users from outside the
firewall (I work for an Aerospace company) to access "intranet"
based training where Captivate, Flash, and even Flex based apps are
designed to run best.
I would be interested in any rationale for the use of Flex,
its strong points and weak points, etc.
Thanks,
eholz1I'd ask: why use slow, browser dependent, bug prone, outdated
Ajax hacks or old-school generated HTML when you have Flex as an
alternative. I'd rather give up and become a sleeping mall security
guard than devolve to Ajax hackery.
Flex weak points? I'd say printing and reporting is the #1
that I can think of ATM, but of course competing technologies don't
do any better. They still rely on the same crummy tools and
techniques that Flex apps often seem to call on. And for
reporting/printing when your requirements are pretty simple, Flex
can probably deal with it natively anyway, to boot.
We're using a hybrid approach for reporting. Flex charting
and interactivity (good luck doing this as well Ajax hackers) is
great for small summary reporting, and simple table data can be
printed from inside Flex. For larger/bulky and more complex reports
we call on a servlet which uses a 3rd party reporting tool to
generate PDFs.
Flex integrates with a ton of other technologies pretty well.
You can also install a Flex app using AIR, which basically makes it
a standalone client application on your workstation. This could be
the ultimate bandwidth saver (no swf OR html/js transmitted), if
you don't mind the less convenient deployment method. AMF is much
faster than the crappy protocols Ajax uses.
BTW, running on an intranet is not going to be a problem, as
long as Flash 9 or higher is deployed everywhere, or users are
permitted to install it using an internal server download. It
doesn't need to come from Adobe's server off the internet..
BUT, Adobe better not get too confident here. MS and
Silverlight are doing to be tough competition, and I'll switch if
it steals the lead in maturity. JavaFX is junk, and too late to the
game, it'll fail. ^_^ I guess Ajax could even become less crummy,
but some of it's downsides will never be resolved.
