Reports Server - dynamic reconfiguration needed for long-running reports

We have a need to permit users to submit large reports via scheduler from the hours of 8 pm to 2 am.
These reports currently fail due to the daytime configuration limits on the row count and the elapsed time.
I guess effectively we need to stop, change the config, and restart the reporting servers to expand the day-time row and elapsed time limits that are imposed.
Can this be done thru the CMC API or is there a better way to accomodate this need via Powerscript or some other mechanism ?

Hi,
these Groups are virtual. You dont need any additional Hardware. The callenge here would be that you cant switch them on or off. If they activated they are activated.
The only thing i could imagine would be custom code which enables the servers and disable the servers. This would be customization, no default options are here available.

  • Which registry setting to change for long running reports

    Hi, We are on BOXI R2 SP3 on IIS 6.0. We have web servers in DMZ and have ports opened. We have reports running longer than 25 mins in production and business is facing issue as reports are timedout  ( Errors ;oke The request timed out because there has been no reply from the server for 600,000 milliseconds .) after 20 mins. We would like to increase this value.  I read KB 1324139  but its for Tomcat and we are on IIS 6.0.
    I am planning to increase the values of below registry entry and also add command line parameter like "-requesttimeout 3600000 in RAS servers.
    Anyone knows if I am overdoing or doing less?

    Hello Pandeyji and others,
    I was having the same problem, and I referred to your thread for fixing it. I got some different results which I want to share with everyone.
    First of all, how is my application different? My application is actually just a jar file which is invoked through command line. There is no web-interface, so there is no app servers/web servers that need to be configured, unlike Pandeyji's configuration.
    All you need is a JDK and some dependent jar files such as log4j etc to run my jar. I was getting timeout when I was calling the byteoutputstream method to export my published crystal report into a flat file. I went through a lot of registry settings as illustrated in Pandeyji's summary above, but that did not fix the issue. I kept on getting, timeout after 600,000 milliseconds and I was trying to figure out from where it's reading this value.
    Then I installed procmon to see from where it's reading the clientsdkoptions.xml file. Once I found that, I replaced that file with my version of clientsdkoptions.xml file.
    Now here's the interesting part - After I replaced it with my version of clientsdkoptions.xml file, I could see in ProcMon that the RAS api was indeed reading my file, but even after I had put in a different timeout of 240,000 it kept on ignoring it, and continued timing out after 600,000 milliseconds. That was crazy...and I couldn't figure out what was happening.
    I strongly suspect and believe that a majority of us have had the same results, and so none of us was sure from where it is reading that 600,000 value. Finally, with my java xml background, I kindda suspected that maybe at the time I was editing the clientsdkoptions.xml file (which I obtained from our BOE default installation directory), I probably introduced some special characters, and so kindda distrubed the default encoding of the file, and maybe that's why even though RAS is reading my clientsdkoptions.xml file, it's not using the timeout value from there.
    SO.......I recopied the default clientsdkoptions.xml file from our default BOE installation, and this time opened it in notepad, and edited the timeout value there....and voila it worked...I also changed the <server> tag to a different value, say TEST_SERVER, and it still worked. Then I went back and changed all the registry values back to default 600,000 and IT STILL WORKED....meaning, the RAS API picked up my customized timeout from clientsdkoptions.xml file and not from the registry.
    I've searched this issue and read it at several forums where I've seen people struggling to fix this timeout or increase it and failing even after doing all the changes..I thought let me post my experience and let everyone know..maybe it's only one change at one place that's required to be done, and not like 10 different changes at 10 different places.
    Hopefully, as always, SAP Support will read this and publish a note for us developers to ease this pain. Thanks & please let me know if anyone has any questions.

  • Crystal Reports Server (XI) - Store Procedure Dependency 4 Running Reports!

    I'm upgrading from Crystal Reports 7 to XI.
    Currently, data in temp tables gets populated once a stored procedure executes. I've added this stored procedure as a dependency for the reports to run. As a result, scheduled Reports do not start running until this stored procedure finishes executing. This ensures there is data in the tables before the reports start to run.
    However I'm not sure how the above can be accomplished in XI. This is the only hurdle, the team has overcome all the other hurdles and this could potentially be a show stopper.
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Anuj

    Carl:
    Thanks a lot for your assistance! I'm using Crystal Enterprise.
    The event dependency works fine, however I'm having trouble in accomplishing this:
    "Put the Stored Procedure in a Crystal report and schedule it to trigger the event upon successful completion."
    I'm new to the XI environment, sorry if the question sounds too dumb or too basic....
    Since the stored procedure will load data in the concerned tables only when executed, I'm having trouble in executing the procedure when I created a new report & selected the procedure as the data source. I get an error as "Invalid Argument Provided"
    Do I need to copy the SQL of the stored procedure and run it in the report as a command object? I'm afraid doing so will not commit the newly added records.
    Thanks much for your assistance, appreciate it!
    Thanks,
    Anuj

    Matt,
    A namesake of yours is my client for this issue.
    Coming to the problem, the customer says there is proxy configured between HTTP server and WebSphere. This proxy server times out for long running reports. If the HTTPServer is bypassed, things work fine.
    A colleague of mine opened a case with BOBJ. I can get you the case# if you need it. We got this reply:
    From: Takano, Hitomi

    Hi Matt,
    I was away for the last two days, so I couldn't reply to you sooner.
    Extending the timeout setting from Webi and Infoview in BOXI R2 will not
    make the long running reports work as your proxy setting at the lower
    layer than BOXI just allows 5 minutes and after that the connection will
    be cancelled by the proxy. I'm not sure why this setting was effective
    for https only or timeout out after 2 min. This is out of scope of BOXI
    R2 and your network admin would be the best person to handle. You were
    getting 502 error in Java Report Panel. I googled with "502 error and
    ProxyTimeout", and I got the some articles returned which say  when
    backend doesn't answer on requests(because it timed out), it returns to
    a client an error 502.
    I'll close this thread as the n/w admin at the client are working things out.
    Thanks for your support.

  • Web.Show_Document does not work with long running reports

    I am using Web.Show_Document() to call reports from Forms. Everything works fine for smaller reports. However for long running reports I do not get the output instead get the page "This page cannot be displayed.". On checking the job status on the report server I find that report is still running and completes after some time but by that time my http request has already timed out. What configuration do I have to change to make my long running reports work.
    Thanks

    So, looks like this is an IE issue. I need to add the form server site to my list of Trusted Sites. Once I did that, everything started to work fine. Thought I'd share in case anyone is really interested.....

  • Long running reports end successfully - present s "page can not be found"

    Long running reports and browser timeouts - page can not be found"
    We are launching Oracle 9i Reports from a Portal 9ias (release 9.0.2.2) system. We are in production with about 100 users. It is not going well with respect to Report problems.
    We have the following problems:
    1) hanging reports,
    2) reports where parameter screens will not present due to large LOV on parameter screen,
    3) and the most aggravating problem is "Page can not be found" presented to user when in fact the report ran successfully and create a .pdf.
    We are at our wits end with Oracle Support and the Oracle Portal and Reports product.
    As I said, I am launching Oracle Reports 9i from a Portal 9.0.2.2 application. I have several long running reports that complete successfully but return to the user an error "Page can not be found". Meta-link Note: 189454.1 suggests a modification to ReceiveTimeout parameter in the pc registry. We set the ReceiveTimeout parameter to 7200000. This did not solve the problem. Users still receive "Page can not be found".
    Is there a report server side setting that we must set also ... or some other setting we should check?
    I need to solve this issue. Is there someone out there that can help? Are there other people having similar Oracle Reports issues? According to Oracle Support we are the only people with these issues. Are we?

    1) If you can reproduce the Reports Hanging issue consistently you can push Oracle Support to file a bug.
    2) I am not sure about this now, but again you can take this to Oracle Support and push for resolution.
    3) There are some problems with IE - Adobe integration. This is not a Reports bug. You can try
    (a) Switching off Adobe - web integration in Adobe Acrobat reader settings, so that Adobe will not automatically open pdf file in web. Instead a dialog will be shown as to which application to open the pdf file or save it to disk and user can save the file to disk and open.
    (b) Use IE latest version. (or some other browser like Netscape )
    [ You can roll back the ReceiveTimeout param change you made to see the impacts one at a time ]
    1) To confirm that this is a Adobe - IE pdf problem run the same report to htmlcss, rtf. If these come fine, then we can ascertain that this is Adobe - IE issue.
    2) Give http://host:port/reports/rwservlet/showjobs?server=server_name. You can see all the jobs and their jobids. For the concerned jobs you can click and see whether output is actually generated or not.

  • Solution for long runnig reports

    Hi All!
    I have a couple of long running reports. It can't be published on web, becouse brouser have short time out.
    Can any body give me something like pattern for such case. I mean way to organize asinc communication with Reports server.
    Mike

    Depending on the type of report and how often the data needs to be refreshed, you could run the report at night and store the result in cache.
    Another option is to take a look at your data model. Do you have a lot of queries and/or a lot of formula/summary columns? Things like these can, of course, slow things down. Try to rewrite your code if at all possible to do as many of the calculations in the SQL statement.
    Now, this other option works very well for a lot of my larger reports even though Oracle strongly discourages it. A lot of times, I'll have some complex report that I'll write a stored procedure do get the data, do whatever needs done to it, and finally insert it into a temp table. The only drawback is that sometimes the after report trigger for whatever reason will get goofed up and not run the statement to delete that data. However, this is easy to take care of. Just set up a job in Enterprise Manager to periodically (at night) truncate the temp tables you're using.

  • How can we take backup of all the RDL'S existing at Report server dynamically at one time

    How can we take backup of all the RDL'S existing at Report server dynamically at one time ? I want to take backup of all the reports existing at the report server dynamically at one time only. currently I'm able to take backup of the reports folder wise
    using VBScript. and I have to pass the folder names again and again. I want this to be happened for all the reports of all the folders at single shot only using VBScript.

    Hi DineshRemash,
    Based on my research, we can store the following VB Script to a text file, then modify the file name extension from .txt to .rss.
    Dim rootPath As String = "C:\Reports"
    Sub Main()
    Dim items As CatalogItem() = _
    rs.ListChildren("/", true)
    For Each item As CatalogItem in items
    If item.Type = ItemTypeEnum.Folder Then
    CreateDirectory(item.Path)
    Else If item.Type = ItemTypeEnum.Report Then
    SaveReport(item.Path)
    End If
    Next
    End Sub
    Sub CreateDirectory(path As String)
    path = GetLocalPath(path)
    System.IO.Directory.CreateDirectory(path)
    End Sub
    Sub SaveReport(reportName As String)
    Dim reportDefinition As Byte()
    Dim document As New System.Xml.XmlDocument()
    reportDefinition = rs.GetReportDefinition(reportName)
    Dim stream As New MemoryStream(reportDefinition)
    document.Load(stream)
    document.Save(GetLocalPath(reportName) + ".rdl")
    End Sub
    Function GetLocalPath(rsPath As String) As String
    Return rootPath + rsPath.Replace("/", "\")
    End Function
    Then navigate to the folder contains the script, we can directly run the below command from the run menu:
    rs -s
    http://aa/ ReportServer -i download.rss
    We can modify the rootpath to point at whaterver fold you’d like to download the RDL files.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to run long running report in the background

    Oracle Application server 10g
    I need to run the long running reports in the background because while the report is running the cursor is loading and the control doesn't return to the user
    this feature exist in oracle 6i by set the following parameter
    RUN_PRODUCT( REPORTS, 'r_1', ASYNCHRONOUS, RUNTIME, FILESYSTEM, pl_id, NULL);
    How can I accomplish the same in OAS 10g?

    Hi,
    I've done this in 11g. I think it will be the same in 10g as well
    Following are the steps in 11g using run_report_object.
    1. Read metalink note: Using the Reports Server Queue PL/SQL Table and API - RW_SERVER_JOB_QUEUE [ID 72531.1]
    2. Implement RW_SERVER_JOB_QUEUE table as per above notes.
    3. When submitting report run it as background
    a. SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY(lo_report_object, REPORT_EXECUTION_MODE, ASYNCHRONOUS); -
    SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY(lo_report_object, REPORT_COMM_MODE , BATCH);
    4. Display the job_id to user (notification).
    5. Create a new form to view reports base on on RW_SERVER_JOB_QUEUE which provides you the status, etc.... (you may have to create a way to identify the username who submitted the job. This way not all users will see the jobs in RW_SERVER_JOB_QUEUE )
    6. Optionally you can use NOTIFYSUCCESS=email to notify user when the report is finished.
    Cheers

  • Alert monitor for long running background jobs

    Hello,
    I have to configure an alert moniter for long running background jobs which are running more than 20000 secs using rule based. I have created a rule based MTE and assigend MTE class CCMS_GET_MTE_BY_CLASS to virtual node but i dont find a node to specify the time.
    could any one guide me how can i do this.
    Thanks,
    Kasi

    Hi *,
    I think the missing bit is where to set the maximum runtime. The runtime is set in the collection method and not the MTE class.
    process:  rz20 --> SAP CCMS Technical Expert Monitors --> All Contexts on local application server --> background --> long-running jobs. Click on 'Jobs over Runtime Limits' then properties, click the methods tab then double click 'CCMS_LONGRUNNING_JOB_COLLECT', in the parameters tab you can then set the maximum runtime.
    If you need to monitor specific jobs, follow the process (http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/1d/ab3207b610e3408fff44d6b1de15e6/content.htm) to create the rule based monitor, then follow this process to set the runtime.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to Cancel Long Running Report

    Hello
    I'm looking for a way to cancel the printing of a long running report programatically? I'm using the CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument() class.
    Thanks for your help

    Hi Syed,
    The old viewer was COM based and the new viewer is .NET. CR has the ability if the DB server supports Async communication. Most DB's don't so it wasn't of much use. For those that did the functionality was through custom coding within the Designer only. Async would allow CR to send a stop processing command to the DB server. If the server did not have the ability then CR can only wait for the data to start coming back before stopping the viewer from updating.
    In any event I don't believe the Windows Viewer in .NET has the ability but I will suggest it to the Product group to add the ability in some future version.
    Thank you

    I'm now writing some reports that are slow running. I've tuned the sql, however because the volume of data being returned and the complexity of the report queries the reports will likely never run faster then ~30 seconds.
    I'm using the ApEx advanced reporting (BIP) and ApEx version 3.0.1.
    What are some thoughts on how to best implement long running reports?
    Thanks,
    Todd

    Hi Dimitri,
    You asked...
    What happens when you run the report directly from BI
    Publisher?There are several reports from one application. I've run the report queries in OEM SQL Tuning Advisor and tuned them.
    I have not seen a noticeable difference in run times between submitting the reports from APEX or running them from BIP. The queries for these reports have the same run time when run through SQL Developer.
    The slow run time of the report queries can be traced to poor table design. The application is a bit of legacy application with the front end now being rewritten using APEX. The poor table design issues are magnified by the volume of data. I have plans to partition one of the transaction tables.
    Prior to rewriting the user interface in APEX the application was written in Oracle Forms. When written in Forms the application was a bolt-on to the Oracle applications. In that environment users could submit reports to the run in the background (via Concurrent Manger) then the report output was viewed later following the completion of the report.
    I'm pursuing a similar solution as the concurrent manager in Oracle applications but available in the APEX, BIP environment. The reports do run between 30 seconds to 1 minute which is to long for the users to wait on the submitting page. Any thoughts on how it is possible to run these long running reports without tying up the user’s page?
    I'll investigate dbms_scheduler and BIP APIs. I know BIP also has a scheduler available but I do not know much about it.
    Thanks,
    Todd

    Hi Vivek,
    In Reporting Services, values for LogonUser, LogonDomain, and LogonCred are created when the report server connection is configured to use a domain account. As to the error that “The encrypted value for the "LogonCred" configuration setting cannot be decrypted”,
    we can know that it relates to the domain account for report server connection.
    To fix this issue, we can refer to the following steps:
    Log in to SQL Server Database Engine in SQL Server Management Studio.
    Under Security folder, give sufficient permissions for your domain account.
    Open your Reporting Services Configuration (go to Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -> Configuration Tools -> Reporting Services Configuration)
    Navigate to the Database Setup tab, select ‘Service Credentials’ as the Credentials Type, then type your domain account and password in there. Press Apply.
    Restart the Report Server services.

    Hope this helps.

  • FRM-41214 by long running Report

    Hi,
    Forms/Reports 10g on OC4J:
    I get a Forms error FRM-41214 by trying a long running Report after 14 min,
    Iin the Reports log we find a 'end of connection..' .
    Is there a config parameter of Forms to handle this worst case?
    Many thanks
    Friedhold

    Hi Christian,
    I am using the rp2rro-package (modified) :
         SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY(rp2rroNodeId,REPORT_DESFORMAT,rp2rroDesformat);
         SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY(rp2rroNodeId,REPORT_SERVER,rp2rroReportServer);
         IF id_null (mparamlist_id)  THEN
          SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY(rp2rroNodeId,REPORT_OTHER,rp2rroReportOther);
          rp2rro_jobidFull:=run_report_object(rp2rroNodeId);
         ELSE
           rp2rro_jobidFull:=run_report_object(rp2rroNodeId,mparamlist_id);
         END IF;
    I am trying also the asynchron Reports mode and get the same break (on the same side 1257 from about 2500 sides) ::
