Repositioning Finder

Can not find out how to reposition the Finder... Am new to iMac and maybe am asking about obvious, but just couldn't find it since yesterday, which is when I got rid of my PC and got the iMac...
I moved Dock simply by right-clicking and choosing right side, what appeals to me as natural position for it, whereas I can't find any way of changing the position for the Finder, anywhere... It's at the top of the screen, whereas I'd want it exactly opposite - at the bottom... Got OS X Version 10.9.4
Also, additional question: How do I check what's my system called? When going through categories to post in, there's obviously a whole list of LIONS, TIGERS and whatnot, apparently depending on the version of the system (?), but there is NO category comming up when looking up version 10.9... Please advise.
And thirdly, "about this mac" shows as LATE 2013, although I've JUST bought the iMac, directly from apple... Am guessing the system needs some SYSTEM update than...? I found the applications updates, but where do I update the system??

Moving Finder is on the display is a simple drag and drop routine. Click the top pane of Finder and drag it where you prefer on the display. You also may want to explore Mission Control (System Preferences - Mission Control) and create custom Screens. For example you could have your open work files on one screen and your open home files on another. You can access Mission Control by tapping the F4 key.

To check the version of OS X on your computer, click the Apple Symbol in the upper left of the display and click About this Mac.

Finally to update your system, run Software Update periodically (System Preferences - Software Update) or Apple Symbol - Software Update. When updates appear for your computer it is wise to install all of them.
DO NOT repeat DO NOT install any third party utilities to increase performance or any antivirus apps, OS X is not like Windows that relies on those types of tools to run OK. OS X run's best if it's updated regularly and otherwise left alone.

    Already a problem in Mountain Lion and unfortunately still there in Mavericks: Finder will reposition itself somewhere near the end of the file/folder list after expanding or collapsing a folder. This is especially the case when sorting sequence is "Date Modified". So, if e.g. I have a folder contining say 10 subfolders and the sorting sequence is "date modified", when I expand a folder with many files in it, Finder wil jump somewhere near the end of the folder list. Now, the idea of expanding a folder usually is, that you want to look inside that folder. Repositioning to a point way past that expanded folder therefore is a major headache. You need to manually reposition Finder. Of course changing the sequence to "name" could "solve" this, but I usually sort my folder in date modified sequence to have the latest files on top.
    Does anybody know a way to prevent Finder from repositioning ?

    If Finder isn't behaving correctly, there are a few steps that can help isolate or resolve the issue.
    First, try booting your computer into safe mode:

    If Finder is working normally in safe mode, this usually means OS X is fine, and the issue is caused by conflicting software in your user account.

    In previous versions of Firefox, Find-on-page (Ctrl-F) would reposition the page to place the found text at the bottom of the window.
    With version 15, Firefox positions the found text in the middle of the window.
    How can I make Firefox v15 go back to the old system and position the found text at the bottom of the window?

    Thank you for the information. I let Firefox update automatically and so I must have been on the previous release version before 15.0.1.
    It seems my Ctrl-F feature was someone else's Ctrl-F bug. I'll just have to live with the change as I don't expect Firefox will allow the positioning to be user-specifiable any time soon.
    If anyone's interested in why positioning at the bottom of the window is useful, my application is here:

    This displays a number of charts with a title line below each one. By finding "[" in the title it was possible to just fit one chart in the window with the title at the bottom of the window - and then step through the charts. Now the charts are half-hidden.
    However, I have a workaround because I also have a checkbox on each title line. Therefore I can still tab from one checkbox to the next. It turns out that tabbing to the next checkbox does position the checkbox's line at the bottom of the window.
    Let's just hope no-one now sees tabbing behaviour as a bug.

    Unable to find a way to view and manipulate files created by Apps. with 11.1.4.62.
    Also missing is the display of the screens in devices containing app icons which can be repositioned.

    I think you're asking how to update your apps on iTunes on your computer.
    The screen from which you update looks like this:
    To get there, go to "Apps" as shown in the upper left, then click "Updates" in the top center.  All available updates will be displayed.  If there are none displayed, click "Check for Updates" in the lower right.  If some are in fact available, that button will change and say "Update all".

  • ScrollPanes & TextAreas - Repositioning in 1.5 with .scrollRectToVisible()

    So I've an uneditable text area with the words wrapping around sitting inside a scroll pane.
    My user clicks a button and the program fetches some text from an XML document and displays it on the screen.
    The trouble is that the window automatically scrolls to the bottom of the text field, while ideally I'd like my user to be able to read from top down without having to start by manually repositioning every page.
    So after I set my text, I've been trying to pull off a .scrollRectToVisible(Rectangle) method, which as best as I can tell is the only way to reposition scroll bars in Java 1.5.
    I've tried applying the method to the textArea object itself, which from what I can tell is that way it should be done, with rectangles of all shapes and sizes, most notably
    h = textArea.getSize().height;
    w = textArea.getSize().width;
    (0,0,0,0)(0,0,1,1) (0,0,w,h) (w,h,0,0)(w,h,-1,-1)
    and so forth with all the permutations of those variables you can imagine.
    But, alas, no cigar. I can't get my text window to begin it's short life visible from the top.
    Am getting something simple and basic wrong? The only thing I've found so far that might be relevent is that the API specifies a seperate .scrollRectToVisible(Rectangle) method for JtextFields, over and above that which exists for other components. Which:
    "Scrolls the field left or right."
    Since I'm wrapping my words I only need up and down scroll, but gotta admit I'm stuck for how to accomplish this.
    Here's the relevent code in my document, in case it helps:

    Dear Walker, thanks for the tip about .invokeLater(), it's a very useful little method and did exactly the trick. Would have taken me weeks to find it one my own.

  • Can I reposition windows without using mouse?

    I'm using a third-party application which, when opening a new window, insists on putting the title bar at the top of the window underneath the menu bar at the top of the screen. This occudes the title bar and makes it impossible to click on it to move the window elsewhere on the screen. I also can't minimize or maximize the window because those buttons are also on the title bar.
    Is there a method in OS X that will let me select a window and reposition it on the screen without using the mouse to click-and-drag? (Perhaps using the arrow keys somehow?) Or alternatively, is there a way to automatically reposition all the open windows so that the title bar would become visible (like the tile function I remember from some past Mac version of Word)?
    FYI: I've tried Exposé, but that only brings up a "ghost image" of the window. When I click on it, it immediately heads back to its "occluded" position. I've also tried resizing and rotating the screen in System Preferences. That doesn't work either.

    What about enabling Spaces and assigning the window to a different Space - does that have an effect on how the application is positioned?
    What about pressing cmdshift/ to open the help menu. Then type in "Zoom" (assuming that command exists within the application's menus) and press enter. This should have the same effect as pressing the green plus sign in the application top left corner.
    Note that the menus of your application may have several zoom functions. For instance Firefox 3 has Zoom In and Zoom Out under the View menu (for zooming the webpage) and Zoom (the green plus function) for maximising the application window. This means I have to use arrow keys to find the right one in the help menu. However, unless your application is too far "up" or beyond the top of the screen, you should see the menus when you use the arrow keys - a floating blue arrow appears next to the command.
    I found a commercial application that allows moving windows with the keyboard, MercuryMover:

  • Find feature looses focus while typing a phrase, after typing the first space character.

    The find feature now looses focus while I am entering a phrase. After entering the first word of a phrase and the space character, the find box will reposition itself to a possible result on the web page on EVERY CHARACTER and I have to reposition the cursor BACK to the find box to enter every subsequent character in the phrase I am searching for. Is there a way I can turn this useless (for me) *feature* off?
    I used to be able to key the phrase I was looking for, and the box would turn red as I typed if the phrase did not exist. I would really appreciate being able to do this again. It now seems that Firefox 'jumps the gun' to find the phrase before I have completed typing it in.

    *If you have many extensions then first enable half of the extensions to test which half has the problem.
    *Continue to divide the bad half that still has the issue until you find which one is causing it.

    You can use cachedRowSet.size() with JDBC 2.0 (I think).
    If you have a scrollable result set you use rs.last(), rs.getRow() and can then reposition your cursor using rs.beforeFirst().
    You can use the SQL select count(*).
    You can loop through the result set and count the rows.
    There are many, many posts concerning this topic. Be sure to take advantage of your ability to search the forums so you don't have to wait for an answer. You may want to search now and see if there are more possible solutions.

    I don't fully understand your question so bear with me.
    Before you issued the query you had inserted a record into the table you are querying against from Forms? So you know what the data is in that row?
    If that is so you can iterate over the block's records with FIRST_RECORD and NEXT_RECORD and when you find the record you want to position the cursor on, you exit the loop.

  • In Photoshop Lighting Effects, I have suddenly lost the icon to reposition lights

    I have been running CS6 since late 2012, on my Macbook Pro Retina, without any issues until suddenly today. The panels have suddenly changed & I can no longer find the icon for repositioning the lights. I have done all requested updates but I have not in the last week been asked to update either my OSX interface or Adobe Photoshop, so I can't work out why it suddenly changed overnight.
    I have checked to see if the icon's circle has fallen out of the range of the canvas, & tried restarting Photoshop, re-setting to Defaulf workspace etc.
    I can put on a light but can't move it because there is no icon with circles to manipulate. How do I get it back?

  • PSE8: Can Tools In Toolbar Be Dragged Up And Down To Reposition?

    The tools in my PSE8 toolbar are in a different position from my Photoshop CS3.
    For instance, the Zoom tool is next to the top in PSE8 but in PS CS3 it is at the bottom, above the foreground and background colours.
    For speed and efficiency when swapping between apps it would help if the toolbars were as near identical as possible.
    So can the tools be repositioned ....... I can't find anything about this in the Help menu?

  • Finder Opening Folders in Wrong Display

    I have a second display attached, though the power is off.  For folders that have at some point been opened on that display, Finder always tries to open them there, even though it's off.  Now that Expose is gone there is no way to zoom out and reposition wayward windows, so I can't find any way to get them back short of turning on the display and moving them manually.  I thought deleting the DS_Store file might force Finder to forget where it thinks that folder should appear, but it didn't help.  Is there any way to fix this?  Is there any way to make Finder forget all folder locations and dimensions?  Can Finder be stopped from ever saving that information?

    Two things to try:
    1) check the box in Finder > Preferences > General tab, then relaunch Finder, then go back and UNcheck that box, and relaunch Finder again (to relaunch Finder, hold the option key and click-and-hold the Finder icon in the dock, then select Relaunch, or use Apple menu > Force Quit)
    2) trash the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist, then restart (the OS will recreate the plist file; sometimes they become corrupt)
