Repositioning Hard Drive Icon

I have a G4 400 running fully updated 10.3.9 that is my primary workstation at work. I work on it all day, then at the end of the day I restart it. This has been my daily routine, Monday thru Friday ever since I got it back in February, 2000.
This machine has been rock solid, and has never had a single operational problem. But it does one thing that just kind of annoys me. Like I said, I restart it at the end of the day. I do this just to clean things up and log me out. So when I come in in the morning, I am greeted by the login screen. I log in, and my icons appear on my desktop (which I must admit is usually quite cluttered), and invariably, my hard drive icons (I have two hd's) get repositioned to somewhere else on the desktop. I just drag them back to the upper right hand corner where I prefer to have them and go on about my business.
This is something I can live with, and I am not sure when it started happening - although I know that it has been doing this for YEARS. Anyone else see this behaviour? Any thoughts on how I can get them to just stay put. It does not re-arrange any other desktop icons - just the hard drive icons. Just a minor annoyance, but I would prefer to find the icons where I left them before restarting...

Hi JMengMO! And Welcome To Discussions!
Positioning Desktop icons, too close to the edge of the screen, will cause them to reposition themselves on restart.
Positioning them too close to each other, will cause this as well.
Depending on how many you have displayed, and the size of your screen, the Size of the icons, as well as the Text size & Label position can also factor in. Experiment with these settings.
My Desktop icons do not reposition themselves, and this is how I have my Desktop View Options set.
Icon size: 32 x 32
Text size: 12 pt
Label position: Bottom
I have none of the following options selected.
Snap to grid
Show item info
Show icon preview
Keep arranged by
A different configuration may work for you. Experiment with the options until you find something suitable.
Click on an open area of your Desktop.
From the Finder's Toolbar, position your cursor over "View" and pull down to "Show View Options", and click. Or use the Command + J keys.
Good Luck!

  • Hard Drive icon won't open and menu bar flashes off and on

All of a sudden, in the middle of the day, my eMac went haywire. I can launch apps and docs are one the desktop. But I cannot open the Hard Drive icon. If I double-click on it (or used Command-O from keyboard), the icon won't open. And when I attempt to open it, the Finder Menu Bar begins flashing off and on (vanishing, reappearing, vanishing) across the top of the screen. I haver rebooted, run disk utility to repair permissions, even booted from TechTools to run its diagnostics. But still no access to the Hard Drive icon. I logged out and logged in as a TEST user, and same thing happens even when logged in that way. Literally, this happened in an instant. One minute the eMac was fine, then this started. Anyone else seen this? -- david

If the problem exists in both your regular account and your Test account odds are that it is at the system level. You can try a Safe boot (hold down the shift key at startup) to see if there is a third party startup item or one of the optional Apple functions that is causing the problem. You could also boot from the installer disk and use the Disk Utility->Repair Disk function. If you have a utility such as Tiger Cache Cleaner which will do a deep cache clean you can also try that.

  • No hard drive icon on desktop - new hard drive

I just upgraded the hard drive on my macbook pro.  Now, when I look at the desktop there is no icon for the hard drive (Macintosh HD).  What do I need to do to be able to have a hard drive icon on the desktop?

In both the general section (desktop) as well as the sidebar section. The Lions think they're some sort of iPhone or iPad and hide everything.

  • No hard drive icon on brand new iMac?

    Hi,
I just received, installed and set up a Refurbished 24 in Intel iMac, 3.06 GHz.
All is fine, except that the hard drive icon (by default named "Macintosh HD) does not show up at all on my desktop. The desktop is totally empty, no icon at all. All apllications are there, system is there... the computer works fine.
I tried: dik utility verification and repair (where it does show) - logging in and off - restarting the computer, etc., to no avail. NO hard drive icon showing.
I can access the drive content via the Go menu, but this is not normal, and it is awkward and inconvenient.
    Any solution?
    Thanks,

    Hi Joe,
Thanks! I had already figured that out from the forum, but after posting, and after erasing and reinstalling the whole Snow Leopard!!!! Waste of time and stupid overlook on my side, specially since I had just gone through all system preferences setup and forgot the Finder one.
Well, at least I could partition my hard drive as I wanted...

  • I have lost my Hard Drive icon on my desktop. How do I get it back.

I have lost my Hard Drive icon on my desktop. How do I get it back.

Quick thing to try: from the Finder, select the View menu and then select "Clean Up" in case it has wandered somewhere almost off the desktop.  Also, if it is "hiding" behind something, it will be revealed.

  • External Mounted Hard Drive Icon Not Showing on Desktop nor on Sidebar

    Bonjour,
I have a portable drive that does NOT show up in the Sidebar nor on the Desktop. The only way I can see and navigate through it is by clicking in Disk Utility > Mount Point: <hyper-link>
Then hard drive icon and its content show up fine. But the HD icon is slightly dimmed (it is paler than the all other - HD, computer, etc - icons).
I verified the external HD and it is just fine. I have another eDrive (TechTool Pro 4) partition and it shows up like any normal HDs normally does.
How can I get the icon to show up back into the Sidebar and the Desktop?
Is there a "Preference" file I need to throw out?
Is there a UNIX command I could execute to make it show up again?
    Thanks for your assistance.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
    tell application "System Events"
set visible of (choose folder with invisibles) to false
    end tell
When prompted, select your hard disk in the dialog box. Next, log out and back in.

  • My hard drive icon is gone from desk top and does not show up in spotlight or finder searches!

    Hi there
recently my hard drive icon has disappeared from my Macbook Pro (10.7.4) desk top and does not show up in spotlight or finder searches! I have tried several fixes posted online for earlier operating systems with no luck.
Also, when I connect my external hard drive the icon does not appear on the desl top nor in the finder either, making looking for documents impossible.
    Help!!!
    Thanks in advance!
    Marni

In "finder" click "finder" then "preferences" and navigate to the "general" tab.
Select which items you would like to have show on your desktop.

  • How in the HECK can I change my Hard Drive icon??!??!!

I've tried searching these discussion forums for how to do this, but the question has always remained unanswered! Does ANYbody know how to use this? I'd buy applecare but I'm a student and can't afford it. Would somebody please figure out how to make it so that you can paste a new icon on top of the standard icon for 10.3.9? It's driving me crazy that after I copy the icon I want to use for my hard drive that I can't paste it on top.
And I've tried doing a permissions repair in Disk Utility.
    400 MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

That's how other people do it, HVlaar; it's the standard procedure. Works fine for me. Are you logged into an admin account? Have you considered that changing your hard drive icon probably isn't an important thing to do anyway?

  • I have an external hard drive with my new iMac.  I am trying to load Age of Empires III on the new computer.  I am supposed to drag the icon onto my hard drive icon.  Where is that?

New iMac and not a computer whiz.  I have a new iMac with an external drive.  I am trying to load an old Mac game on it.  The Age of Empires icon tells me to drag it to the hard drive icon.  Where is that?  I have tried finder and launch pad.  No luck.

Choose Computer from the Finder's Go menu and find the internal drive.

  • How can I add the hard drive icon to the menu bar on a MBPr

How can I add the hard drive icon to the menu bar on a MBPr?  I have downloaded Google Earth and it wants me to drag it to the hard drive for install. I was able to display the icon but now I would like to put it on the menu bar. Is this possible? Or can I add it to the hardware section under system preferences?
I'm a new Apple user, coming out of the dark ages of a lifetime in the PC Windows world.
    Thanks

It's on your Desktop, is it not? You cannot put it on the menubar through OS X although you may find third-party utilities that will. If you want it on the Desktop:
Select Preferences from the Finder's Finder menu and check the desired boxes:
Click on the Sidebar icon in the toolbar to set what you want displayed in the Sidebar.

  • Hard Drive Icon no longer in upper right corner?

I know this probably sounds silly and trivial but it's annoying to me and I was wondering if there is a fix for it. Last week, my Hard Drive icon, which normally sits at the top right hand corner of my screen shows up on the middle right underneath a couple other icons when I start up. I can then move the icon to the normal position but why did it suddenly change startup positions on my desktop? And how can I fix it so that it automatically shows up in the upper right corner after startup like it used to?

In the Finder menu bar, click on "View", then "Show View Options", then activate "Snap to grid". That should keep desktop icons fixed in position.
Why did the HD icon move from the upper right hand corner? Who knows, but it happens. Don't lose sleep over it.

  • Two hard drive icons on my desktop, would like to have only one...

Hello  everyone, I recently got a PowerMac G5 (I think it's a 2.3 GHz). It came with a hard drive inserted 'Untitled', which came from my old 1.6 GHz G5. On the desktop though, I get two hard drive icons, my main start up drive called 'Untitled', and another one called 'Spare'. I was told that my G5 has only one drive inserted 'Untitled', so I'm trying to either get rid of 'Spare', or merge it somehow into 'Untitled'. Under the Volumes folder, I was not really able to get rid of it, is this something to do with Disk Utility?
BDAqua - under Get Info, when I was on Leopard, I tried changing a User Permissions category called 'Everybody' from Read Only to Read and Write. Upon restart two days later, Leopard would not start up (loads of writing on the screen, with the Mac power button, asking me to restart). To cut a long story, I am now back on Tiger lol (Leopard issues for another discussion lol), so now I dare not play with anything which says Read Only, especially when it's probably not even necessary. I am writing this from the library, so don't know what exactly it says in Get Info - User Permissions for either drive at the moment. If this is relevant, I can have a look later and post back, I'll also verify permissions in Disk Utility for both drives, but I think they are fine. Actually, when I was on Leopard, my 'Untitled' drive took ages to verify permissions, and always loads of writing appeared! Now that I'm on Tiger, the other day when I verified Disk Permissions, it was quick and fine!
    Thank you
In the screen shots, 'Untitled' is model ST31, 'Spare' is model WDC

Hi BDAqua, sorry I should have just opened it in the first place! I don't know why that man told me there was only one hard drive inside, perhaps a misunderstanding.
It seems that there are actually two hard drives inside, one in A, and one in B (see photo)! So, if this is the case, I don't have a problem with the two hard drive icons.
I guess if a G5 shows two hard drives on the desktop, then there's two hard drives in the machine!
    Thanks for helping anyway.

  • Highlighted Hard Drive Icons on Desktop no longer open when dragging/copyin

I noticed this yesterday and I have no idea how to fix it - hope someone here might have a quick fix.
When I attempt to move files into my folders from the desktop, I used to simply drag the files over the icon of the hard drive I wished to place it, and the icon would highlight, and then open, and I could navigate to the folder I wanted and drop them, and all the windows would close.
Now when I attempt to move files off the desktop in this way, the hard drive icon will highlight, but won't' open the window automatically as it used to.
I've done a permission repair and that didn't help it.
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Respectfully submitted,
    Len

Thank you for your response. That was exactly the problem. I have no idea how it became switched off, since I'm the only one that uses the computer, but no matter.
    Thanks for the help!
