Reposting: x3750 M4 SED Drives Stuck at boot with BIOS Drive Security

This post was originally posted on IBM’s developerWorks public forum (https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/forums/html/topic?id=262ef99a-30bf-48bd-861c-e78eddc55c...) The following is a summary of the post issue and the response.
Issue:
I have an x3750 M4 system with M5210 Controller, 1GB Flash RADI 5 option installed, and 8 SED drives. The BIOS "Drive Security" is activated. The previously password does not work and the system gets in a loop prompting again for the pass phrase. When the cache, and thus the support for SED drives, is removed, the server boots fine.
Response:
The first step is to update the ServeRAID firmware. See RETAIN tip number H213237 “ServeRAID: UEFI use of SED pass phrase causes system restart - IBM System x” (https://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/myportal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5096178&brandind=5000008)
If that does not work, then the system board and ServeRAID require replacement. Please contact support for this option.

In case anyone wonders, my "solution" was to change to a WB Elements Desktop 3TB (only USB 2.0 is currently available for this model). I miss the speed of USB 3.0, but it's much nicer to not have to remember to unplug and plug in the hard drive each time I boot.
Still hoping to see a proper solution to this (since I don't have the WB My Book anymore, I can't test adaher's suggestion).

  • H97M-G42 stuck at boot with BIOS 7925v25 and 7924v26

I am in a loophole with the MSI H97M-G43 Motherboard.
I would not recommend this motherboard to anyone planning to play with ESXi
Bios v21 v22 v23 v24 would not recognize quadport lan adapters such as Intel PRO/1000 VT or Intel PRO/1000 PT.
In Bios they will appear us "Unrecognized Manufacturer" and there is no option to enable hardware from unrecognized manufacturers
Bios v25 v26 would recognize PRO/1000 VT hardware but would refuse to but OS.
Very very confusing and unstable situation.

    Update:
Bios v25 & v26 are unable to initialize 32GB of RAM, thus creating boot issues.
    16GB RAM work just fine.
Bios v21,v22,v23,v24 would handle 32GB of ram without any problems.
    Wow..... MSI

  • PC won't boot with CDRom Drives hooked up after iTunes install

    Hello All,
After installing iTunes (initial, first time install on this machine) the computer would not fully boot. It would get to the Windows starting screen and the indicator bar would reach about 2/3 of the way complete and sit there. I tried rebooting in safe mode and it would still get stuck at seemingly the same point. After attempting several things to try and correct the issue, I finally stumbled upon that if I disconnect the CD drives the computer boots fine with iTunes installed. I've searched through the past records and saw some similar issues, but nothing quite the same and a lot of the fixes involved running diagnostics on the CD drives, but I can't do that currently as I have to have them disconnected to use the computer. Ideas? Help!
    Thanks,
    Jen

  • IMac won't boot with external drives attached

I am using iMac 27" Late 2013 model upgraded to mavericks 10.9.4. Two external drives are always attached with it, one is segate 3.5" 2TB USB 3.0 drive and another one is 2.5" usb 2.0 drive.
when i start my imac with external drives attached it won't boot up. Stuck at plain white screen after a startup chime, not even any apple logo or any progress circle appears. And i have to detach all of my drives to make it boot.
This problem arises after upgrading to mavericks. Already tried resetting PRAM, SMC and checked Startup disk and verify disk with disk utility.

    Raja,
Do a SMC reset perhaps even a couple of times and see if that helps. Also in System Preferences + Startup Disk make sure the internal HD is selected.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • External Firewire Drive Will Not Boot with 10.5.1

I have a Intel Mac Mini and I tried to install Leopard onto a external Firewire Drive. I have done this with 10.4.11 and all works well. The Mac Mini is running 10.5.1 on it's internal drive. I attached the Ext FW drive 320 GB and formatted it using 'Disk Utility' GUID format. I next installed 10.5.0 on the Ext FW Drive. I can shutdown and reboot with 10.5.0 using the firewire drive as the booting drive. I next installed the 10.5.1 update and when it completes it requests a restart, I restart it and it never boots back up just the Grey-Apple screen.
I have left it sit for a long time in this 'trying-to-boot' mode for a longtime because I know 10.5.1 may restart more than once on initial install. but nothing. I have also tried partitioning the drive into 3 40-80-180GB drives, but still the same behavior.
    Any suggestions?

Went through the motions on that. No positive results. I'm starting to suspect either the enclosure or one of the latest updates.
This what I have found to date.
The Enclosure " Vantec NexStar 3" extrenal USB 2.0 and Firewire. Model NST-360UF-BK
The Drive Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB IDE Drive
I tried 10.5.0 on an Intel Mac Mini. (GUID format) It boots ok. Install 10.5.1 manually downloaded or automatic it will install the update but will no reboot.
(this part I have to verify a second time) tried the same enclosure on a G4 . I attached the drive formatted it for a PowerPC install and boot. Installed 10.4.10 but not the latest security updates, JAVA, and QT. It will boot ok from the external FW drive. I next install the latest Updates via the update app in the Systems Preference window. After doing the updates for 10.4.10 it will not boot.
So I'm suspecting either the enclosure or the latest updates

  • USB External Drive Boot with Internal Drive DEAD

Can I boot from an external USB drive on my iMac when I know that my internal (250 GB) drive is dead?
I have run a diagnostic on the computer and everything but the internal drive is fine.
    Thanks for the help.
    Kevin

    Answer is 'definitely'.
    I'm doing it myself for the same reason. BUT, I greatly prefer Firewire 800 if that option is available to you (If not, you could always buy a cheap {=> quality but Fugly Firewire 800 case ....}
    I would ALSO like to be able to 'tell the iMac' that it doesn't have an internal drive so that it powers the drive down and 'rests' it....(or never powers it up) I really don't like the idea of all those electrons and Quarks being pumped into a electro-mech device which may well have friction/heat problems... I wonder if I can get the back off the Mac and unplug/sever the power to it... {until I can get around to a permanent fix, of course...}
    {It won't let me 'eject" or "dismount" the drive.}
As always: the ONE really big disadvantage of the otherwise magnificent iMacs, MacBooks etc... Us tech heads can't really get at them...

  • KM4M-V + SATA Drive, Hangs at Boot, Tried IDE Drive and During Setup, Powers Off

I bought 2 KM4M-V boards to upgrade my ailing 1880+ systems. Then realized I needed DDR as well so went back for that and also decided to update CPU's to Sempron 2600+. Also picked up Seagate 80Gb SATA and a 350 watt PSU (Alaska ATX 350 P4) which was recommened for this board by the dealer.
I am having so much trouble I am about to throw in the towel. Since I am 'upgrading' everything in the system except the CDRom drive I should have just started all over with 64-bit systems but now I am kind of stuck since it is over 30 days ago I got the MB's.
    Problem 1:
Using only the single SATA drive I never could get past the DMI Pool data line in Setup, it would just hang there. I read all about how to deal with SATA drives with this or similar boards here. SATA is enabled in BIOS but I can never get to the F6 load drivers step to try that. If I remove the SATA cable Setup will procede so it is something with the Seagate possibly? No jumpers needed and no preparation done to the drive. BIOS does not see the drive but the setup RAID utility does see it but says I cannot set up single drive as RAID of course, but it does report proper data about the drive. Never can get past Bios POST with SATA drive hooked up (channel 0 or 1)
Finally gave up on that and ran into Problem 2:
Put an older IDE drive in as only HD and XP Windows setup gets cranking along coping files then the system just dies. Like some pulled the plug suddenly. Happen every time. I checked for heat problems. Even ran through memory tests (SIMMTESTER), tried swapping cables, plugs and wall circuits. It dies every time no matter what.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

DMI pool data? When changing mobo but keeping hard disk one should do a repair install of Windows and install the mobo drivers for the new mobo.
I originally wanted to keep the Windows install but decided to remove original C drive and save for eventual D drive use. A repair install warns you that your 'My Documents' folder 'may' be deleted and I didn't want to risk it as I have years and years of photos I didn't want to risk losing.

Addit: Seems something isn't right in the IDE configuration, or what Windows think is the config.
Bios is happy with WD drive as single master on one channel and CDRom as single master on the other (No jumper on Drive- osnavi). Windows install starts out just fine with my intention of creating a new partition but then it just BOOM, power off. My preference is to use the new SATA Baracuda as system drive and my old IDE C drive as D drive...

  • [Solved] xorg stuck in tty1 with nouveau driver on dell xps laptop

hi all, struggling with xorg on dell xps with nouveau driver.
Nouveau works under ubuntu LTS so no hardware problem.
Followed the arch wiki for installation and all related links (nouveau, xorg etc.)
startx (and startxfce4): it seems like xserver has started but I'm stuck
in tty1 still seeing the text output of the command; ctrl-c doesn't work and  I need to log into tty2 to be able to kill the xserver.
Had to create an Xorg.conf with Xorg :0 -configure (else xserver couldn't start with fatal error screen not found).
    Xorg.log.0 shows no EE errors.
Tried all the tricks read on the wiki, e.g. downgraded the kernel, deleted ~/.xinitrc, deleted xorg.conf (also tried
a minimal xorg.conf with only the screen section), blacklisted  modules i915 and intel_agp, checked there's no vga=
options in my bootloader.  Tried some other tricks found on forum posts to no avail.
    Any suggestions highly appreciated.

I don't think this possible, if you have two video cards and only want to use the nvidia, you need to have a possibility to disable the intel in your bios.
If this is not possible, then first install the intel driver, then Bumblebee and 'friends'
I overlooked that issue. It seems under ubuntu both cards are used together and it works automagically without bumblebee. I was hoping to achieve the same on arch,
given bumblebee's wiki says: "Warning: Bumblebee is still under heavy development! But your help is very welcome."
All Bumblebee is under heavy development, true, but no reason to not install it, I mean Arch is under heavy development too....
As for Ubuntu, I don't use it, and have no plans to do so, but tell me, how are they putting it together?
Just open the Bumblebee wiki, read carefully, and install it.
Take extra care with nvidia, you then need to reinstall Intel too.
Basically as advised in the install guide:
    pacman -S xorg-server xorg-server-utils xorg-xinit
    pacman -S xorg-twm xorg-xclock xterm
I wanted to know if you installed the Xorg group, but you did it the right way.

  • Problems booting with external drive

    Hello,
I just upgraded from an older model MacBook Pro that was happily running OS X (10.5.4) to a 2009 model that is currently running 10.5.7. There was a gap of a few months between models, though, so I cloned the old one onto an external drive and used it to boot an iMac loaner -all without any problems. My problem is that now that I have the new MacBook Pro , when I hold the option key while starting the computer in order to select the external drive, the computer reverts to the internal hard drive rather than booting from my external drive.
Any advice, suggestions to help me overcome this would be most welcome.....

If I understand your post correctly, I think the reason the new MBP won't boot from the external drive is that the OS that's on the external drive is incompatible with the new MBP. What I would try in that situation is to connect the external drive to the new computer, and then use the new computer's OS X install disk to install the operating system onto the external drive. It should then boot (though why you want to boot from the external drive is not something you explained).

  • Stuck at boot with spinning wheel for hours

    Hello,
Yesterday I made a partition and cloned my Snow Leopard in order to see if Lion worked with the software I have.
I then booted to my "backup Snow Leopard" partition and upgraded to Lion but for some reason I'm stuck with spinning wheel for hours when doing the first restart. According from the install.log it seems that the install (upgrade) was done properly.

30 seconds after finishing the installation I restart and in verbose mode I get this log (sorry for the lousy quality, with was taken with my mobile).
    I've tried everything.
    Repaired permissions, disk.
    Resetting PRAM, NVRAM, SMC.
I even left the MBP all night in this process to see if there was any progress. No luck.
Tried to enter safe mode but I only get a black screen and a new restart. (Something like PRAM)
    What could be causing this?
In the past when I installed Snow Leopard (10.6) I had some issues with my firewire (they stopped working a few months ago).
I needed to boot to safe mode in order to finish the install of SL and remove these files from /System/Library/Extensions
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
Rebooting with this change shows that everything works properly (besides the dead firewire ports).
I don't know if the "spinning wheel" has something to do with my FireWire or Airport (which works fine in SL).. since it got stucked in there.

Finally!! I'm currently using Lion on my MBP.
With the help from members and macrumors I got this solution.
    - Installed Snow Leopard on an external drive (by USB)
    - Updated that partition to Lion from another macbook (I used macbook white).
After that I cloned the partition (without the FireWire kext files) with Carbon Copy Cloner to my MBP and... voila! :))
I'm replying to your message from Lion. Give it a try! If you don't have another macbook maybe a friend can help you.
I don't know if there's another method but this one is working!

  • BootCamp won't boot with USB-drive connected

    Hi everyone,
since I installed my BootCamp partition I encounter a strange problem. I have an LG external DVD-drive connected via USB to my iMac. Everytime I try to boot Windows while the LG is connected the boot process just stops and gives me a white display. If I unplug the drive from the USB-Port everything works fine, and once windows is booted I can even reconnect the USB-drive and it works fine. But as you might understand always unplugging and plugging really gets to my nerves. I know of a couple friends who encounter the exact same problem, they also complain about this...
Also strange is the fact, that if I boot OSX the LG is connected and everything works fine...
Searched the forum and web, and wasn't able to find something usefull...
I hope there is somebody here who can help me...
    Thanks in advance...

  • Windows 7 won't boot with HFS  drive attached

I installed Windows 7 onto my 2011 Mac Mini.  For some reason, when I try to boot Windows with my 2.5TB HFS+ external USB drive attached, I just get a black screen, I don't even see the Windows splash screen/logo.
If I remove said drive, Windows boots fine.
Also, if the drive is attached after Windows boots, when I click the Boot Camp icon and choose "Restart in Mac OS X" I get the error "Could not locate the Mac OS X boot volume".  Again, if the drive is unplugged, I can use the Boot Camp icon to restart in OS X just fine.
    Any idea what's going on?

maybe the 2.2TB issue afftects it, or the drive enclosure even.
And maybe if it was just 2.1TB it would work.
Even Lion had some surprises for customers with USB device drives.

The installation went fine, but i can never get the boot manager set for the two OSes.....if anyone can give me any ideas on what i should do (either using the windows boot manager or solaris's manager), i'd apprectiate it

    Hi Don,
Yes, zapping pram is agood idea - but it always scares the xxx!! out of me! I don't really know what it is but i do it for the G3 sometimes. however........ in the meantime it's fixed! I jumpered the 2 drives the other way round (reversed Master/slave) and it boots just as nature intended. Perhaps a quick zap of the pram and maybe even a desktop rebuild is in order. Thanks for your advice and inspiration. Meanwhile it's time for all respectable London citizens to go to bed zzzzzzzzzzz

  • G5 won't boot with FW drives plugged in

I have been using a chain of five FW 400 & 800 drives for years. Today I went to lunch and came back to find my computer turned off. When I tried to turn it on, it clicks once, the little light above the power button lights for a fraction of a second, and then silence.
So I started unplugging things. My computer will boot just fine, if my chain of hard drives is unplugged from the back. They are attached on the FW 400 bus.
They are all self powered devices. Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Thanks for the help guys.
Steve, the system.log lists nothing about shutdown. There are two curious entries that are repeated a lot. The first one doesn't have a time/date stamp, but the second does.

The only reason I put that in is that when the computer reboots after its sudden death, it gives me an error that the time is wrong and could cause problems. No idea if that is related.

My five external drives are all Lacie drives of various sizes. A few are FW800 but they are all running at 400.
    I'm running a dual 2Ghz with 2.5 GB RAM and 10.4.8.
    Thanks again for any thoughts,

  • Macbook does not recognize external USB drive - except when booting with CD

    Hi all,
I recently swapped my Macbook's internal HD (Toshiba 100gb 5400 rpm) into an external USB enclosure (Eagle Consus). The computer does not recognize the external HD, even when using two USB cables for extra power. No luck with safe mode or resetting PRAM. Disk utility just hangs with spinning wheel if I start it. Switching the USB ports does not help.
I thought it might be a power problem until I noted the following:
1)The external drive works fine if I boot the Macbook from the Mac OS install CD... with this I can run disk utility and scan the drive with no problem
2)It works fine on an old Mac Mini with only ONE of the USB connectors plugged in
3)The enclosure worked fine on the Macbook when I had the new drive in it (320 GB 7200 RPM) while copying the files over
    Any thoughts?
    Many thanks,
    --T

It is actually using a power supply, yet it will not actually power on unless it is connected to a computer's USB port. At least this is how it works on my old desktop running Windows 2000. When you disconnect the drive from Windows, or put the machine in hibernate mode, the device actually shuts down. It powers back up once the machine wakes up from hibernate mode.
It's a somewhat older device which predates the Macbook Pro, but it claims to support older Mac, such as the G3, G4, G5, iMac, iBook. OSX 10.0.4. So perhaps it's just too old?
    It's a Buffalo HD-HB250U2 (250 GB).
    So you're in Japan too?
