  • Colour image on  black & white photograph

How can I convert a colour photograph to part black & white? I believe I need to de-saturate to start with, but that's as much as I know.

    John,
Since you asked about selection, here's an example using the Magic Wand and Selection Brush tools.
    http://home.earthlink.net/~msand42/PSE/Selection%20Brush/album/
In the 1st shot I used the Magnetic Lasso to select the cat. This  worked well since the outline of the cat contrasted with the background. For purposes of my example, I then cut off from the selection the top of his head and part of his paw, and selected a part of the blanket.
In the 2nd shot I activated the Selection Brush tool with the Mode option set to Mask and inverted the selection. Now the cat is masked in red.  Note that the default Overlay value is 50% so that you can see through the mask. You might need to modify the Overlay so that you can see enough detail to paint the mask (next step). As you can see, the two missing portions of the cat are not masked and the excess blanket is.
In the 3rd shot I painted to fill in the missing portions of the cat. To erase the excess on the blanket I held down <Alt> while painting.  You can adjust the size of the brush to get the necessary level of detail for painting.
In the 4th shot I inverted the selection and and set Mode to Selection to get back to the normal view showing the selected cat.
Of course if you have a steady hand you can simply draw the selection using the Lasso tool, but I wanted to demonstrate how you can fine-tune it with the Selection Brush.

  • Photosmart C6380 help black won't print

I have replaced all cartridges once and no black will print. Now I just replaced them again after I emptied the others trying to get it to work. Now black varies from nothing to very very light. It always shows alignment failed.Tried everything but a new printhead. HELP!

I have had this exact issue emerge this weekend.  I've tried everything I can think of to remedy the situation--cleaned the printing head (multiple times), replaced the black cartridges, even disconnected the printer, re-booted it, and re-initialized it ... all to no avail.
The colors print just fine; however, black will not print.
    Very frustrating.  Any ideas?

  • MacBook - Black & white image on TV

Please can somebody help with connecting my MacBook to a Sony trinitron TV
I have a new MacBook and I'm using the following set up to connect to a 5 year old Sony TV -
Apple mini-DVI to video converter into S-video lead connected to S-video to SCART adaptor - problem is that I only get a black & white image.
    Can anybody help = please?
    13" white MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi essman,
As S-Video cables send their chroma (colour) and luminance (brightness) signals separately it sounds as though the problem may be found either in your S-Video cable or in one of the S-Video connectors. If only the luminance pins/wire was working correctly your video signal would appear to be in black and white.
To ensure that the SCART adapter is not the problem however I would recommend testing with a composite video cable (also known as an RCA.) With that cable the entire video signal is sent over the one pin, so you either get video or you don't. If over that connection it's still black and white, I would say the blame lies with the SCART adapter.
    Hope this helps!

  • Photoshop Elements 9 - how to highlight one colour in a black/white picture?

    hi guys
with which feature can I highlight just one object (one colour) when the rest of the picture is black/white?
    Thanks for your help!

Open a color image in Full Photo Edit
On the top menu click Layer >>Duplicate Layer >>OK
    Enhance >>Convert To Black & White >>OK
Add a layer mask by clicking on the layer mask icon at the bottom of the layers pallet.
Select a brush and adjust its size, then make sure your foreground color is set to black.
Gently brush over the area where you want to show the color from the background layer. If you make a mistake change the foreground color to white to erase what you just did, then switch back to black again.

  • HOW TO PRINT BLACK AND WHITE ON HP PHOTOSMART 7510 USING MAC?

HAVING SOME PROBLEM TO PRINT BLACK AND WHITE WITH MY HP PHOTOSMART 7510. SPENDING MONEY BUYING EXPENSIVE COLOR INK BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT TO DO TO PRINT JUST BLACK AND WHITE PLEASE. I HABE A MAC OS X 10.10.4 THANK YOU.

Welcome , I would be happy to provide you with more information about printing with black only on the Photosmart 7510. First, here is how to make sure you are changing the black only settings; In the software program that you are trying to print from, click File, and then click Print. (or Command+P)I have put a red box around the drop down in the image below, from this menu you want to choose Paper Type/QualityIn the Paper Type/Quality tab, click Color Options, (usually you have to click the little arrow, again outlined in red on the image)If you want color printouts, make sure that Greyscale is selectedChange the Greyscale mode to Black Ink Only or Black Print Ink Cartridge OnlyClick Print to try the print job again.   Next you might want to read about how your ink supplies are used; The following information is from this article; Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers - it discusses several aspects of ink usage with HP printers. Ink is used in a number of ways throughout the inkjet printing process. In general, ink in an ink cartridge is used for printing documents, photographs and other such materials. Some ink, however, must be used to maintain the health of the print head; some ink is residual; and some ink evaporates. HP offers two general inkjet print head designs: integrated into the ink cartridge (Integrated Print Head: IPH), and a long-life print head integrated into a printer which has Individual Ink Cartridges (IIC). Just so you know, your printer is an Individual Ink Cartridge (IIC) setup. Some color ink may be used when printing black text-or-graphicsThere are several circumstances when color ink may be used—primarily to improve print quality, and sometimes to improve printer reliability—even if the document appears to be only black text-and-graphics. Many HP printers utilize chemical interactions to improve the quality and permanence of plain paper black text-and-graphics by adding small amounts of color ink to certain black areas. Some dark images which look black may contain a combination of black and color inks. For black and white images and photos, a blend of colors called "composite black" may be used to achieve significantly better image quality and smoother gray tones than can be accomplished with black inks alone. Some inkjet printers utilize pigmented black ink, which is incompatible with some inkjet photo paper. In this case, dark or black areas are made up of color inks. Page yield testing is conducted with all cartridges (black and color) installed in the printer. For more information see Inkjet page yields . For users who wish to print utilizing just black ink (despite the reduced print quality), many HP printers offer options. For example, a driver color setting (by selecting "print in grayscale with the black cartridge only" in printing preferences) specifies printing using only black ink. In addition, many IPH printers can operate in "reserve mode," which allows the user to continue to print with just the black cartridge when the color cartridge is removed or not installed. In HP IIC systems, all supplies are required to be installed in the printer for the printer to function.  So your IIC unit will use those colour inks to maintain itself, keep air out of the printhead and keep your print quality legible.    Please let me know if these steps resolved your issue, or if there is anything else I can do to help.  I look forward to hearing from you!   Thanks,

  • Adjusting black and white contrast on Photosmart 7520 whilst copying

I can't find any instruction on how to adjust copying contrast on black and white copies..

    JCH3114, welcome to the forum.
I have the 7520, also.  I am not aware of any adjustment for the contrast when copying.  I am not at my printer at the moment, but I will check it out more throroughly a bit later.  I will get back to you.
Update: I checked to see what settings were available when Copying.  You press Copy button / Settings / Quality - Draft, Normal (Default) & Best.  I suggest trying the Best setting and press the Black button to see if that helps.  These are the only settings that I could find.

  • Used black ink from my HP Photosmart C6380 won't work in my new HP Photosmart 7525

The black ink from my HP Photosmart C6380 won't work in my new HP Photosmart 7525.  The cartridge is a 564 for both printers.  However, I get the message that the ink cartridge has been used previously even though it is a newer cartridge that I had used in my C6380.  Why won't this work?

    Hello LTron,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see you are looking to use a cartridge previously installed in a different printer, the Photosmart 7525 says it a used cartridge.
If you are trying to use this cartridge before using the setup cartridges that come with the 7525, it will not work. Once the printer is initialized with the setup cartridges you would be able to use other ones.
If you have already used the setup cartridges, this error should only be letting you know that it has been installed in a printer before. Hitting OK, next, etc should clear the error.

  • Photosmart C6380 AiO won't print black

Hi, We have a HP Photosmart C6380 All-in-One that will no longer print black. The photo black and the color cartridges are OK as far as I can tell. It is the regular black that won't print. We had this happen the last time we changed the regular black ink cartridge. For some reason the new cartridge wasn't printing anything so we momentarily went back to the old cartridge and it worked again. Then we took out the old cartridge and put back in the new cartridge and it continued working. Now the cartridge is about half empty and it has quit printing black. This shouldn't be a computer related issue. But in case it is important: WIndows XP SP3. Sorry I'm not sure exactly what driver version I'm using but I did run HP Update through the Solution Center -> Help -> Check for Updates and everything is up to date as far as I can tell. I've tried to get the printer to print black by going through the menus on the printer itself Setup -> Tools -> Printer Status Report. It kicks out only a blank page. I tried running the HP Hardware Diagnostic Utility. It reports that everything is fine but, of course, when I tell it to print a test page it kicks out a blank page. We finally gave up and put in a fresh new black ink cartridge (564 XL) and it still doesn't print anything. Any suggestions?

I see this is still being read so the following is an update. My earlier reply mentioned the printer started printing again. It printed for a while but eventually the same problem started again- no black or blank print-outs and a new ink cartridge didn't help. I think the print head was dodgy. The printer wasn't worth the cost of buying a new print head and wasn't sure that would help. I looked for a printer at a thrift store with a matching print head or same ink cartridges. I found a printer that produced a good print test page after some cleaning cycles, bought it, and moved the ink cartridges to the printer.

  • My iPod displays black & white battery charge icon and sad iPod face. help!

I plugged my iPod into an older iMac; it froze and had to be restarted.
I restarted it and started listening on shuffle.
It would skip through all of my songs without me pressing any buttons.
I restarted again and it worked fine.
I came home and plugged it into my 10.3.9 iMac and the tracks started skiping and barely playing on iTunes.
I tried to eject it, but it wouldn't...so I unplugged it.
I then restarted it, but after the silver-on-black iMac icon came up, the sad iPod face showed.
So I pluged it back into the computer. It spontaniously restarted when I tried all of the steps of restarting and reinstalling.
Then it just displays a black& white old battery charge icon with a thunder bolt that flickers on the screen now and then.
And continues to restart itself with first the apple icon turning into the sad ipod face and then into the battery charge icon.
I really do not want to restore my iPod. I am hoping to keep my files but at this point, my future is bleak.
This happened last night. They said it might just be my battery so I kept it plugged in for about 10 hours. Nothing.
    What can I do?
    Please, please help.

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2364921&#2364921
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • FX 5200 nview??? HELP! black & white

I just bought the FX 5200 128MB graphic , but I´m having problem with the dualview or nview. My TV screen is black and white. I have the latest driver 45.xx, but still I can´t get the TV showing color.. Im not sure if my s-video cable is broken or not (could that maybe be the problem then?), But I still get black & white picture. I´ve change the nview setting to s-video out, but it still doesn´t work..     Please Help

I have the same problem also, but in more than DivX (WinDVR, Windows Media, PowerDVD etc...)
I did not have this problem when I first installed the Card and drivers, but have installed many Codecs, Programs and MSI Updates that I cannot be sure when it fudged up.
I wonder if it is similar to the Nero problem reported under the PC@nywhere Master in another forum?
I have installed all latest drivers via MSI LiveUpdate but still SNAFU'd.
    Any other insights are appreciated!

  • Help need to change black & white pic to add some color?

I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 and Im tryin to find where I can take a black and white pic I took today few of and want to add some color to few areas on it like flowers ect..
Ive been tryiin to find out where it says in the book but I cant find it.
Also, how does one place a watermark of somekind on my pics like a small one down in a corner?
    Thanks, appreciate it!

There are several ways to do this. Here are a few.
One way, is to create a blank layer over your image. Change this blank layer's blend mode to either color blend mode or soft light blend mode. Use the paint brush to apply color(s).
You might also consider using a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer over your image.  If you have a color in mind, make that your foreground color in the tool box before you create a hue/saturation adjustment layer. After you create the layer, change it's blend mode to either color or soft light. Fill the mask with black to hide the effect. Grab the paintbrush tool and select white as your foreground color. Paint where you want color applied to your photo. (If you over paint switch to black and paint over mistakes.) You can apply a little bit of Gaussian blur on the mask to make the edges transition from black and white to color smoother.)
Another possibility is to duplicate your image then use color variations to color the duplicate. Once happy with the coloration, use eraser to remove color you don't desire or better yet use a clipping mask with an adjustment layer as the base so you can mask the image and use black/white paint to define areas that will be colored.

Thanks for that 'sberman' - because my iPhone is backed-up to my work computer (only at this stage) I have had to call our IT Department in Adleaide. (4 times this morning). The last guy managed to get the phone into 'DFU Mode' - no more recovery mode screen - (kind of 'asleep' perhaps) from my understanding of same. I am awaiting a call again from IT so they can get my computer to actually recognise my iPhone on the C Drive. This also happened to  one of my colleagues in Newman (WA). She got so frustrated with the whole process that she bought another phone the next time she was in 'civilisation.' She hasn't had any problems since. (Cross fingers).
    Thanks again, Sandra2474.

    Hi Gurus,
I have a beginner in photoshop , I tried to copy a selection into new blank canvas however the layer in the new canvas becomes gray/black/white, did i wrongly click on something ? Please help , Thank you in advance

How did you open the new document? What Image mode is the document in and what exactly did you copy to the clipboard? What was the current Photoshop target when you did the copy? Was it a straight copy or a copy merge etc...
