Reproduce Unsharp Mask Using Gaussian Blur
Hello,
I know the effect of Unsharp Mask can be achieved using Gaussian Blur and Blending Mode only.
Given a layer 'L' (The original) its USM(L, Amount - 100, Radius - 10, Threshold - 0) is given by:
GBL = GB(L, Radius - 10) - Gaussian Blur.
Difference = L - BGL.
USM = L + Difference.
I made it using 'Image Apply' and Gaussian Blur yet the result is different.
Does Photoshop uses different method?
How can the accurate result be achieved?
Hi Chris,
All I did was as follwoing:
1. Created black image in 32 Bit Mode (RGB Mode so numbers will be the same in MATLAB).
2. Applied GB with Radius 3.
3. Saved as 32 bit TIF.
4. Loaded at MATLAB using imread.
5. Extracted the first channel (They aer all the same).
The result is up.
Something went wrong with the numbers.
Anyhow, how come the result of my classic Gaussian Kernel are so different from Photoshop's?
Here are the example:
This is the GB Kernel of Photoshop for Radius = Sigma = 2:
Here is the GB Kernel of a classic GB using STD of 2 and support of size [11, 11] (Just like photoshop):
And here is the difference:
As you can see, it is very noticeable difference.
The blur using the classic kernel is much harsher.
Moreover, Using the classic kernel trying to replicate USM ( USM(O) = O + 2(O - B) )yields something completely different.
What am I missing here?
Thank You.
P.S.
Well, I'm just playing for fun, so I don't have "Run Time" limitations :-).

Photoshop 12.1 corruption when using gaussian blur
Is there a fix for the Photoshop 12.1 corruption when using gaussian blur
It's not a crash per se... when using the gassian blur filer at some but not all times the file will becomse corrupted.. it comes up with large flat panels of color. After that point asnything done to the file is destroyed. You have to go back to the last saved versioin of the file. There are many notes on the web about this issue.. It has been occuring since I started with 12.1 about a year ago. Never occurred on other PS apps.
You have to quite the app and re-launch. Then it works. There is no crash report to make. -
Any suggestions on how to remove an "aura" from around a selection in an image? I shoot pictures at rodeos. To make the rider stand out, I create a mask around the rider and then blur the background with Gaussian Blur. This results in a noticeable blur around the outside of the selection. I have tried using Feathering as well as other Refine Edge Tools. The only thing that works is to go around the edge with the Clone Tool. This is time consuming and not totally successful. So, my two big questions are: (1) Is there a better (simpler) way to avoid the aura? and (2) If not, is there a way to remove the aura that is simpler??
Thanks in Advance,
Art SchwartzSorry, what with the long title I had neglected the body of the message and your statement

seems to answer my first question.
Did you do that before or after blurring?
Have you alternatively tried using Content Aware Fill? -
Halos when blurring background using gaussian blur
Can someone PLEASE help me?!!! I'm getting so frustrated....I can't seem to blur a background in my photos without seeing halos around the foreground that I would like to be the main focus of my picture.
I have tried blurring the whole picture and erasing the subject...but that doesn't work. I have tried inverting and feathering but that still hasn't worked.
And also, what is the best way to blur the background but keep someones hair completely in focus?
Thanks so much for you help!
M.M.,
The best way is with use of a mask.
Open picture
Duplicate background layer
Blur background copy layer
Open a Levels adjustment layer, do nothing with it just yet
Drag the adjustment layer, in the layers palette, between the background and background copy layers
Left click the layer mask thumbnail (white rectangle) in the adjustment layer
Link the background copy layer and the levels adjustment layer (Layer>create clipping mask or CTRL+G)
Paint with a black brush where you want the area to be in focus. If you go too far, correct with white
Hints:
Can toggle between black and white with x on keyboard
Use bracket keys to change brush size - [ to make smaller ] to make larger. -

Gaussian Blur in Photoshop CS5 Corrupting files
We just got brand new systems at work less than a month ago and this event has happened twice since then. When using Photoshop CS5 Extended and using Gaussian blur the file becomes blocky and all layers as well as their masks become corrupted with these blocks. Can anyone help or is there any advice?
Here are my system specs...
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro5,1
Processor Name: 6-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 12
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
Memory: 16 GB
Processor Interconnect Speed: 6.4 GT/s
Boot ROM Version: MP51.007F.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.39f11
SMC Version (processor tray): 1.39f11I'm getting this same issue - or a similar one. It seems to only happen when I run the Gaussian blur command, and during the same process in my workflow. It also seems for me to happen when I have made a selection from a layer above that is a smart object.
Let me describe the scenario that I have experienced a couple times in the past week. (BTW I just upgraded to CS5 only a couple weeks ago).
Usually I have a document open with dozens or hundreds of layers. The effect that I am executing when this seems to happen is where I have a group of shapes or placed image smart object layer and I'm creating a shadow layer by making a blank layer below said group or image, making a selection from the above group or image, and then filling the selection in the blank layer with a color - which I then run the Gaussian blur filter on, and afterward warp transform to get my realistic looking shadow effect.
But the problem is in seemingly random instances and on seemingly random documents when I run that Gaussian blur, Photoshop freaks out and craps the bed. And by craps the bed I mean deletes pixel data from multiple layers in my document very randomly, and also generates odd bright colors all throughout the document.
You can see the initial freak out in this screen shot from when I just initially selected the Gaussian blur filter from the menu (but had not yet even clicked "OK"): http://cl.ly/3KTx . The strange thing is that I had just run this series of steps on the above layer which in the screen shot you'll see as "Layer 44", and all was well.
Here's a screen shot showing the file after I closed it out, restarted Photoshop, and opened the file back up: http://cl.ly/3K2C . In case you can't tell, data from several layers all over the file is missing and corrupted.
I'm sure I don't have to explain how exasperating this is, as this represents more than a year's worth of work on a client project, no joke. Fortunately I'm mostly done with the actual site build, but that makes the loss of the artwork files of no less consquence - especially seeing as how I'm not ACTUALLY finished and I did in fact need all of that data to complete the project.
Anyhow, some additional details which may or may not be related to the issue:
- The issue seems to happen randomly. As stated above the same steps did not produce the error just a few minutes before.
- I have had this issue with another file this week where I was doing the same processes on another shape.
- It seems that this is occuring when I make the selection from a layer that is a smart object of some type
- I also noticed artifacts in the weird colors (after I tried running the processes again, so not in the above screenshot) that were actually design elements from an entirely different document that I was working with earlier this evening.
- I have filed a bug report.
Dunno what else to describe, but I hope you guys can get this figured out, seriously. I paid way too much for my upgrade to CS5 to have bugs in key software features corrupt my files thank you.

Hi
For some reason I am getting this problem where I cut out an image, use gaussian blur and then my image gets all messed up, with squaires, circles and lines starting to appear on the layer of the cut out image. (What is weird is I wasnt even using blur on this layer!!) This is what happens below:
It has only started doing this and I cant seem to work out how to stop it. I have even installed the latest updates of photoshop but that did nothing.
Hope you can help
RyanDid you read the warning when you enabled Ray-traced 3d? You have to nest your RT layer in a classic 3D comp and then apply the effects. Do not collapse transformations... Check the third and fourth line from the bottom.

Gaussian Blur keyframes on timeline - RIDICULOUS scaling
When adding keyframes to Gaussian Blur ...
If I view those keyframes on the timeline, it's bloody useless, because the scaling factor is absurd!
The range on the timeline is 0 - 30,000 !!
WHY?
No one uses gaussian blur with more than 100, maybe 200. Why does it go to 30,0000?
Do they have any editors working over there at Adobe? He's talking about using the rubberband keyframe UI from within a clip in the timeline. If you apply gaussian blur, click the effects icon (in the clip header) then set the effect display to Gausiian Blur > Blurriness, then you can drag the line up to the top which will indeed show a value of 30000.
It happens this way because the timeline's rubberband UI is not optimized to control each and every effect parameter in the ideal way. Some value has to be chosen as a max for the rubberband to display and that max does nto always match what the user would do. But your problem is valid, and the need for improved effects controls has been heard. Please do submit your own feature request for it though if you want.
The workwround is to use the effects controls panel's paremeter hot text, which is not confined by a vertical ceiling. This is the ideal method for full control over applied effect. In my experience, the rubberbands work best for things like volume, speed and opacity, where there's as many variables, and you just need a way to visualize the ups and downs. -
Chris Cox: Fade a gaussian blur on a layer with a mask, who should I thank?
I remember in the past that it was impossible to fade a gaussian blur if it was applied on a layer with a layer mask with the link icon active, as the blur also affected the mask. (some sharpen filters also affect both layer and mask)
Now, even in Ps 13.0.1.3, I notice that it is possible to fade, both the layer and mask using the fade function.
I'm gladly surprised it had been implemented, as I felt reluctancy to do it in the past when I mentionned the issue.
It now makes a more natural and discoverable workflow.
Thanks to whoever implemented it, or corrected that bug according on how it is seen! Not sure who made that change.

Error Compiling when using RGB Color Corrector and Unsharp Mask
If I apply the RGB Color Corrector and and Unsharp mask to a clip within a sequence and try to render the sequence or a small portion of the work area I get the Error Compiling: Unknown error.
This is occurring within a project I have updated to Premiere CS6 from Premiere CS5.
I have tried creating a new sequence and importing the same clip and other clips. Anytime I try to use both the Unsharp Mask and RGB Color Corrector I am unable to render. I have tried this with Mercury Playback both in hardware and software modes with the same result.
Has anyone else seen something like this?Okay, glad this occurs for others too and I am not experiencing something isolated. The issue here is this shouldn't be happening at all.
Premiere CS5 has no problem with this.
Yeah if I turn off one effect or the other no problem. Unfortunately it doesn't matter the order I place the effects in I get the same error regardless of which is placed first.
Nesting does work. If I create a sequence, apply one or the other to the clip in the sequence then embed the sequence in another sequence and apply the remaining filter to the sequence containing the clip then I can get my color correction and edge definition. But this is a work around.
There seems to a bug here since there were no issues when using RGB Color Corrector and Unsharp Mask simultaneously applied to one clip in CS5. I doubt there will be a fix for this anytime soon so it looks like I will have to use another method for color correcting or apply RGB color correction to clips already embedded in a sequence as I move forward into solely using CS6.
(How this can become an issue is that after applying effects and color correction to several clips within a sequence I like to render that entire sequence. Then this sequence is ebedded in another main sequence and I can add additional effects and transitions and overlays without killing the live playback speed and only have to render smaller amounts of content from additional tracks. It ends up saving a lot of time after the initial length of rendering.)
Thanks for the suggestions. -
Hi, I am trying to blur the background in Prem Pro CC I have made a mask using the free draw bezier tool but it does not track forward. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Kevin
I found a YouTube clip explaining how to blur the background with free draw bezier tool and it also said to invert the mask, but it still does not track forward. I really hope there is a solution.

How to apply a 'calculated' radius in Unsharp Mask en mass?
In about a week's time, when I've finished applying Curves to about 1200 B&W images, I'll be ready to apply an Unsharp Mask to each of them. Exactly how I'll do that I'm not certain yet, but I've been reading my Photoshop CS Bible (Deke McClelland) in preparation. On page 503 it states:
If you're looking for a simple formula, I recommend 0.1 of Radius for every 15 ppi of final image resolution... If you have a calculator, just divide the intended resolution by 150 to get the ideal Radius value.
For example, at 300 ppi use Radius = 2. Such a recommendation is just that: a recommendation (and not 'ideal' as he also states), but I've taken it as a good starting point; and while I've been adding Curves I have also been experimenting with Unsharp Mask and various Radii (but not yet saving the sharpened images).
McClelland's statement is not clear regarding what Radius should be used if you are NOT working on the image at final resolution. I think I know what the answer is, but I want to confirm.
Some background: I'll be printing on a Xerox iGen running a colour line screen at 175 lpi. The printer wants the images to be 300 ppi. The images at the moment range from an effective ppi of about 100 to 2000, depending on how much they have been scaled in InDesign. So I've got resolutions all over the place which at some point I will have to tidy up. Those images below about 250 ppi, I will be upsampling to 300. Those above about 450 ppi (this may change), will be downsampled to 300 when I convert to PDF.
I have some questions:
QUES 1
Say I have an image at 1200 ppi, that will be downsampled to 300 ppi. Should I do the sharpening on the 1200 ppi image, or on the downsampled 300 ppi image? i.e Will it make any difference to the final printed result if sharpening is done before or after downsampling?
QUES 2
I think the statement:
I recommend 0.1 of Radius for every 15 ppi of final image resolution
should read
I recommend 0.1 of Radius for every 15 ppi of image resolution
Surely the Radius (assuming you accept the figures McClelland gives) depends only on the resolution of the image you are working on. i.e if you have a 1500 ppi image, use a Radius of 10 (1500/150), NOT a Radius of 2 (300/150) -- the final image resolution that is sent to the printer. Is that a correct reading of McClelland's recommendation?
QUES 3
My experiments indicate that for the type of images I am using, McClelland's recommendation oversharpens, at least for my liking. I will probably use half the figure he suggests: Radius = 1 for 300 ppi.
Given that I have about 1200 images, if I was going to apply an Unsharp Mask manually this is what I would do:
1. Put all the layers in each image into a Group.
2. Calculate the Radius to be applied to each image from the formula: Radius = (IMAGE PPI) /300.
3. Apply an Unsharp Mask to the Group using the calculated Radius (plus Amount = 50, Threshhold = 0)
Of course I'm not going to do this manually -- well, I hope I'm not -- but what is the best way? Could an Action handle all of this? A Script? A combination of both? Something else entirely? Not possible in PS?
In summary: I want to automatically apply a variable Radius that depends on the image's resolution. Possible? The PDF says, for one of the steps:
Command-click the duplicate channel to make the edge mask a selection.
When I do that, a selection outline appears, but I can't work out, or find out, what conditions are applied to make the selection. Any ideas? I may have to start a separate thread for this question. I don't like to blindly follow recipes. I like to know what's going on.
Guy,
I'm not sure I understand your question. With command click, the channel is the selection. White = fully selected, black = not selected. It's all the steps made to create the channel that affect the selection. To me the selection edges are visually interfering with a soft mask, I usually hide the edges.
In post 9 steps 2-6 all contribute to the final section. Find edges identifies the edges. Median has a smoothing effect. Maximum expands the selection a little, then the gaussian blur softens it.
This process (post 9) works for me when I sharpen images, but you may not like it. Sometimes no mask at all is a viable option - some folks like a grainy/noisy appearance in non-edge areas. Some people may even purposefully add noise to create that kind of look.
With USM the radius thickens the light and dark areas of edges, and amount intensifies (lightening the light, darkening the dark). Threshold is just what it's name implies, it sets a parameter for Ps to apply the sharpening or not (but it can result in a pockmarked look in smooth areas, so I like 0)
I always look at images at actual pixels in Ps when sharpening. With sharpening there is room for opinion. Some people like thicker edges (higher radius). Some people go easy on the amount, some people are more aggressive.
It's the scaling in ID that makes things difficult, because actual pixels won't give you a true print appearance. To correct this the image either needs to be scaled to size in PS, and placed at 100% in ID - OR left as is in ID, and the resolution changed in PS (300 x % i.e. 300 x 25% = 75 PPI)
I like to start with radius 1 and 100 amount but these values are always subject to change. I wish it was an exact science but it's not. I like sharp images, but I don't want icicles in eyebrows either. I believe you said 175 LPI screening, so if it was me I would err on the sharp side...
Something else I just thought of - the print size is something to think about, too. Consider the two extremes (which may or may not apply to your project) - thumbnails, and posters. If it's a thumbnail, by the time you've got the scaling right in Ps, there really isn't much pixel information left! In his instance a lot of sharpening probably wouldn't hurt, it would create contrast (which is important in very small images). The other end of the spectrum - posters. Actual pixels may be a little misleading in this case, because when the average person looks at a poster, they don't get right up on it at a normal reading distance, they view it from several feet away. For this reason sometimes poster images are only half-resolution, to keep the file size manageable, and give a more realistic view perspective.
Hope this helps. I am not a forum expert. The others may have better advice, or may see errors in my information. -
How do I make a Gaussian blur in LR4 ?
I have tried to mask the area and unsharpen and unclairify but doesn't work.
Thanks, PenniGenerally speaking if you want to simulate a shallow depth of focus effect, a Lens Blur tool of the kind used in Photoshop will look a lot more nearly convincing.
The only truly convincing way - convincing for an expert eye, that is - is (of course) to go ahead and shoot with a shallow depth of focus in the first place .
However where any particular local effect is wanted in LR, and the adjustment brush does not have enough strength to deliver it - you can simply add a second (third, fourth) adjustment brush "pin" applying some more of the same parameter over the top. Quite soon though, it will be apparent how transformation (rather than development) of original picture content calls for a partnering, designed-for-the-job, image editor. -
Missing tools in Fast-Blur effect, Gaussian Blur effect, ...
Hey there,
I'm using Premiere Pro CC and I was just about to mask an object in my video with the Fast-Blur effect (Schneller Weichzeichner in german and as it can be seen in the attached image).
But when I apply this effect to my video it won't show me any tool I could apply it with. It's the same with any blur effect, such as the Gaussian Blur.
These tools should be right above the adjuster from 0 to 127. Any idea?
Thank you
PeterIf you want to use the mask tool you need to update to CC2014 (8.2). It looks like you are atill on CC7.

Is it possible to select the brush tool and have it work as a gaussian blur brush?
I'd like to be able to brush in the blur if possible to small areas rather than use the lasso tool method.
THANKSCMD J - to float a copy of your layer
Gaussian blur this layer
Add a mask fill to the blurred layer fill the maskwith black
Brush with white in the mask to reveal blur
this will act just like a blur brush, even better cause you can paint with black on the mask to undo blur.
