[REQUEST]Advanced weather software (With radar tracking)

Hey community, I am a big weather enthusiast and enjoy watching and tracking storms. Over the years I have searched the web for weather software advanced enough to meet my needs. I am interested in tracking storms individually by cell number and viewing wind speeds. There is a handful of nonfree software out there which I have tried although they just don't quite live of to my expectations. Most are either too simple or give me everything but advanced radar maps.
I have tried storm predator but it's radar maps were just too simple and could not track storms by individual cell numbers. To add with that, it is also limited with a trial period. So far the only software that has been sufficient enough to make me happy is Stormlab. It has a list of maps, it can check precipitation, wind speeds, radar composites with individual storm tracking. It even gives the ETA for what time and town the storm will arrive in.
I guess why I am posting this is to ask if there is open source or at least cost free software which can do some of these things? If not would there be anyone willing to spend the time creating something similar? All I really want is to be able to track the storms by cell I.D. and view an ETA of that particular storm. If you haven't already assumed, Stormlab also has a trial and is only compatable with Windows.
Having a program like this for Gnu/Linux would be very nice as I spend most of my time in that particular operating system (Arch Linux). I have searched for such an application before with no luck. Anyway thank you for reading! Have a nice day.

Hm, I've been doing some more work on AWeather lately... I don't think there are any Arch packages for it yet, and I don't use Arch myself, but if someone wants to volunteer to make one I might be able to help/answer questions.
The old wiki page was linked from above, the new development page is here: http://lug.rose-hulman.edu/code/projects/aweather
There's also IDV, which has quite a bit of support, but is a little tricky to get started with, and requires Java: http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/idv/

  • Collaboration software with file tracking?

    Hey everyone,
I am currently looking for a collaboration or file tracking system to use with AFP on our xserve. Right now we have a ton of users just throwing files on & off the AFP share and not really following proper file naming and versioning protocols.
I would really love to find something simple and straight forward (likely web based frontend) where users can have a front end for uploading and downloading files with version control, hierarchy and filename management.
I would also like to implement this without taxing our throughput too much.
    Any suggestions would be great!

We did an extensive test with Alfresco, and while it's impressive, it didn't do quite what we needed. We're in the process of rolling out Confluence, which comes much closer to our requirements.
While both of these offer a combination of intelligent, Web-based interface and traditional file-serving, I'm not sure I'd call either one a file server. They work much better when accessed through the "front end" (the Web apps) than if you try to manage files through direct protocols such as AFP or SMB.

  • Scanning Software With Advanced Features

I am looking for a scanning software package that has more advanced features compared to the scanning software package included with my all in one.  I have looked for a more advanced scanning software package on the software CD included with the all in one as well as on the HP web site and have not found anything.
Does HP make a more advanced scanning software package than the one inclulded with the all in one?  I am thinking of a program that is similar to VueScan from Hamrick Software.  I might just have to shell out the money if HP does not make a nicer scanning program.
    Thanks.

    Hello @jerryheilman,
Welcome back to the HP Support Forums! I understand you are interested in a Scanning program that offers more options then what is available with the HP Software that was included with your HP Officejet Pro 8610. Unfortunately HP does not have anything like that available.
I was able to Google 3rd party Scanning software and there were many options, I guess it depends on what it is you are interested in doing.

  • Mac with vpn tracker software running very slow

    Hello,
I leave in Seattle and I use a Mac G5 running vpn tracker software tunneling into a Microsoft corporate network in San Jose, CA. My mac is plugged into a router and it is very very slow. I also have a PC with vpn tracker software which is running wireless and it is fast. Any ideas on what I need to do to make the Mac run faster. Could this be issues with my clients network? Should my Mac G5 be running wireless in order to get it running faster? Any advice would be appreciated.
    Stephen

I have the same problem. It is really, really slow. Does Windows work better than the Mac in this respect?

  • "advanced data grid"  with flex builder 3.0

I'm getting watermark as "Flex Data Visualization
Trial" when tried to use advances data grid with flex builder 3.0. There are some links floating on the internet where it's suggested that the license key should be provided in the flex-config.xml to avoid this issue. I would like to know if this componenet is stable with flex builder 3.0 and is it ok to use this in production environment?

Someone from Adobe might be able to answer more definitely
but it's probably just not considered compatible with a modified
Eclipse (at least, the installer). It may just be the installer
blowing up when it shouldn't. I think Adobe doesn't want to support
install configurations that they don't have setup and tested. I had
a similar issue once and solved it by doing the following... not
sure if it'll work, and it's more of a last resort:
Setup a regular eclipse install - install the plugin there.
Somehow, you'll have to keep track of all the files it adds, either
using timestamps or some compare software. It should be a bunch of
files and/or folders in the '/plugins' directory, and possibly a
few others in '/configuration', maybe '/features'. Take all the new
folders and any jar files etc, and drop them into the same folders
in your special Eclipse version. Hopefully when you start it up
    you'll get the Flex functions...
Of course, you could end up hosing your entire "NWDS"
(whatever this is) install. So you probably want to test it out
    first!

  • Canon 860 Series (Pixma) Printer Problems with OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) – links to Canon Support Site with Drivers and Software with install tips

After spending several hours sorting out Canon Pixma OSX problems here are my thoughts:
Canon 860 Series (Pixma 868) Printer Problems with OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) – links to Canon Support Site with Drivers and Software with install tips
    Problem:
    - New imac and MacBook Pro 2012 (OSX 10.8.2) had a problem using Canon Pixma 868 printer on network and would not scan or print using Canon Pixma software (Pixma MP Navigator 2.1 & Photo Print), which has advanced scanning and photo printing functions.
    - When I connected the canon printer to my imac, OSX 10.8.2 automatically downloaded and installed drivers for Canon 860 series printer. I could then add the new printer (select ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”) and printer would work while connected via USB but could not get to print or scan over network wifi.
    - The original Canon 860 Series CD does not work with 10.8 and the manual / online instructions did not make sense (as based on CD install).
    Solution:
    1) Install Canon Printer Drivers and Software (from official Canon site)
Go to canon support site, review FAQ, then download and install following Pixma 860 Series software & drivers for OSX 10.8 (links see below). The version I downloaded is in brackets but check for updated version. Full instructions are below.
Canon 860 Series Drivers & Software  for OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion:
The base software and drivers needed for using Canon 860 Series on Mac OS X 10.8 (USB) are
    1 Printer Driver
(Canon MX860 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.67.1.0 (03-Aug-2012))
    2 Scanner Driver
(Canon MX860 series Scanner Driver Ver. 14.11.4a (03-Aug-2012))
    3 Network Tool
(Canon IJ Network Tool Ver. 4.1.0 for Intel Mac (27-Dec-2012)
Canon Software for using advanced printing and scanning functions (while connected to network)
    4 Solution Menu
    (Canon Solution Menu Ver. 1.4.1 (27-Jul-2012 ))
    5 MP Navigator EX
(Canon MP Nav EX Ver. 2.1.3 (02-Auf-2012))
    6 Easy-PhotoPrint EX
    (Canon Easy-PhotoPrint EX Ver. 4.1.6 (21-Jan-2013 ))
Canon Support (HK) – check your local site

    2. Choose a product series

    Downloads or FAQ
If you have problems installing the software under 10.8, see the FAQ on Canon site. You will need to allow software installs from “unidentified developers by using “Control” Key or by changing your system preferences)
    2) Check Canon Printer and Software Working while connected via USB
Once you have downloaded and installed drivers and software and restarted computer, check that the printer and Canon Pixma software (Pixma MP Navigator 2.1 & Photo Print) are working via USB.  Open the Canon IJ Network Tool App (Applications / Canon Utilities /IJ Network Tool / Canon IJ Network Tool App) and make sure you can see the Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) and that it shows the correct SSID Wifi settings (under the Canon IJ Network Tool App ‘Setup menu’).  This is normally done as part of the automatic install but worth double checking
    3) Add new network printer using ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”).
After you have checked USB printing turn off printer, unplug the USB cable and shutdown the Canon IJ Network Tool App.
Then turn the printer back on and wait 30s. Then add a new printer using ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”). Once you select “+” (add new printer), wait 10-30s for the Wifi Networked Canon MX 860 Series printer to appear in the new window eg Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) (Kind: “Canon IJ Network”)
DO NOT ADD THE MX 860 SERIES BONJOUR SCANNER (the Bonjour Scanner is the built-in software, is not needed and often appears first on the add printer list).  The Canon scanner can be accessed used through the MP Nav EX Ver. 2.1.3 software (which has much better functions)
You will now have two Printer Canon MX860 (USB) and Canon MX860 (Wifi / Network). Set the Canon MX860 (Wifi / Network) as default and test print and scan
If the Wifi Networked Canon MX 860 Series printer does not appear, check the printer and make sure that the printer can see the wifi network. On the printer select Menu / Settings / Device Settings / Lan Settings / WLAN Setting List.  It should say WLAN Active, identify the SSID and have an IP address
If the printer can not see the Wifi Network, plug the USB cable back in, then open the Canon IJ Network Tool App (Applications / Canon Utilities /IJ Network Tool / Canon IJ Network Tool App). Make sure you can see the Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) and that it has your SSID settings (under setup), if it has this info, restart the computer and the printer and try again

  • Distributing software with unlimited strength JCE policy files

I'm about to release some software that uses AES 256-bit encryption. I had to download the "Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction Policy Files 6" to do this level of encryption. I'd like to distribute my software with a bundled version of the JRE that includes these policy files. The software will be available to download from the Internet for those who pay for the service. Placing it on the Internet is technically an export because it's available to anyone in the world.
I've talked to the Bureau of Industry and Security and they said I need to file for a classification number (ECCN). Is this necessary if I'm using Sun's software? The JCE has already been through the export approval process so it would make sense if just including it in my software required nothing. I haven't been able to find any information about what to do legally if using the unlimited strength policy files. What laws do I need to know about or comply with to do this? Also, are there any legal ramifications of including the JRE with my software? I'm using a custom jre launcher that lets me bundle whatever jre I want with my software, so I assume it's a common practice, but I'm not sure.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I posted this question on other sites as well, but never heard any good answers.
I've had to do some research and I've heard a few different things, but this is what I've learned:
Software being exported (putting on the Internet is an export) that contains symmetric encryption above 64-bit requires filling out a BIS-748P form. I had to first of all request a PIN and CIN (company id number) from the BIS so that I can access their SNAP-R system which is where you fill out and submit all the paper work (including the BIS-748P) online. I haven't filled that out yet, but once you do they will review your software and classify it with an ECCN number and depending on what if falls under they will require you to obtain a license or license exception. For what I'm doing (and what most probably need this for), a license is not needed. It's simply classified as a type of encryption software and they know who you are and what you're doing with it.
Until this is filed, the software is under a certain statute as to what you can do with it and there's a lot of legalities behind this entire process that I don't fully understand, but I think filling this paperwork out and talking to those who receive it is a good place to start.
I'm not a lawyer by any means and I could be missing some details, but this is what I understand about the process. If you learn anything else (or find some of this to be untrue), let me know.

  • Please would you stop bundling Anti-Virus software with Adobe Reader?

I would be really grateful if Adobe would stop bundling Anti-Virus software with the Adobe Reader updates. Pre-selecting  the (download - Anti virus software) check-box in the dialogue box smacks of sharp practice. I have nothing against Anti-Virus software, but I want to take control of the process, not have Adobe make important choices for me: it really is very unprofessional.

This is a user forum; you have to put your request to Adobe.
Having said that, you can avoid bundled software by downloading the installer from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
Updates/patches are best downloaded by navigating the FTP site ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/

  • How do I double-click with a track-pad?

I'm new to Mac, and I just bought a beautiful new Apple MacBook laptop. I'm trying to install academic version of Adobe Photoshop 6 (this disk of software was originally made for PCs but I hear it's possible to make it work on a MacBook as well. My question is, how do I double-click with a track-pad, like in order to install new software from actual disks? I'm a multi-media artist and student, among other things. Thanks!
Apple MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi -
Double clicking is done by going to System Preferences/Keyboar and Mouse/Trackpad and then selecting the action you'd like.
However, PS 6 will be more of a task!
If it's a Windows disc then you'll need to install a Windows XP on your Macbook either through Parallels or Bootcamp.
Perhaps another 'Mac Friendly' graphics program might be more suiting if you'd like to stick in with the Mac OS X enviornment. Check out these apps....

I have a macbook pro and the software with snow leopard only has upgraded to 10.5.8, do I need to purchase mountain lion to upgrade to 10.6.8?

Your machine likely can't handle Mountain Lion 10.8 nor 10.7, if it does it will run slow and very higly likely a lot of your third party software and drivers for printers and scanners won't function anymore.
It's because your 10.5 era (or earlier) machine is rather dated, hardware has advanced and is faster, the newer OS X versions have gotten bloated.
I do recommend you call Apple via phone and order the 10.6.3 white retail disks, backup your personal data off the 10.5.8 Mac to a external storage drive and when the disk arrives, stick it in and run the upgrade installer.
Once that's finished, reboot and use Software Update to get to 10.6.8 and stay there. You can buy stuff from AppStore, just don't upgrade to 10.8 (or 10.7) as thats when you'll have issues.
10.6 should run your currrently installed PPC software and hardware drivers. But 10.7/10.8 will not.
10.6 is receiving security and other updates from Apple as more than 50% of OSX users are still on it.

  • Cddb not recognizing US albums that have Japanese versions with xtra tracks

I have imported almost 500 cds this past week with only one obscure one not being recognized. I just hit 2 in a row which I find very odd since these aren't even really obscure titles. After a bit of research what I've discovered is that the 2 albums in question are actually in the cddb/Gracenote database but the track listings have extra cuts due to the fact that they're Japanese imports. I just have the regular US versions. Are they moving toward some sort of weird policy of only having one version of an album in their database? When someone submits a version with extra tracks does it erase the "regular" version from the database? The titles are Steve Stevens-Flamenco.a.go.go and Marnie Stern-In Advance Of The Broken Arm. Any ideas?

I tried all 3 problem discs on my Macbook and they're recognized just fine.
    Dunno.
Try to get the names again. Select the Album in iTunes then iTunes menu Advanced -> Get CD track names.
There is no way that Stereolab-Space Age Bachelor Pad Music isn't in the database.
    Doesn't show up here -> http://www.gracenote.com/search/?query=Stereolab&search_type=artist

I am using Aperture 3 now and I love it. But I would like to purchase or download perhaps some freeware, easy to use photo imaging/editing software with more filters, perhaps layering etc. I don't want something with a very steep learning curve, getting to old for that. My Apple mentor suggests Pixelmator or Gimp ? Are there some others out there? When I was still in the Windows world, I used Photoshop Elements but that is now in my past. Any ideas?

Pixelmator or Gimp are both nice tools for advanced image processing and compositing. I.e. Gimp can do pretty much the same as Phtoshop. You might also have a look at digikam  http://www.digikam.org/drupal/download/binary
Digikam is not just an advanced image processing and compositing program, it is also content management system like Aperture or iPhoto.
I also find GraphicConverter a nice tool, but it is not free.
If you want your image editing tools to integrate well with Aperture, I would look first at the available plug-ins, start with the plug-ins offered in the Aperture pull-down menu
