I was wondering if I could make a special request to Matthew.
I wonder if you would be willing, and also if there would be enough demand, to create one of your lovely galleries for the purpose of clients offering feedback? Photoshop's Feedback Galleries could use a face lift.
Maybe we could get an idea how many here might benefit from this. And if so, maybe those of us who benefit could donate to Matt's Paypal for his time.

Request for feedback on crash report (OS 10.4.11, Firefox 2.0.0.16)
I'd appreciate any feedback on the following crash report. Although actual crashes have been infrequent, I have recently been experiencing a lot of repeated 'non-response' to mouseclicks on webpages, and am wondering whether this is a Firefox-related problem (2.0.0.16 update) or something else.

Could be many things, we should start with this...

4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.

Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc...

Request for feedback: implementing Swing-based drawers
Good day.
I've inherited some code to which I need to add a 'dresser drawer' like functionality. Click on a logical 'open' button and the drawer opens, revealing, or displaying as the case may be, a JPanel with more stuff in it. Click on a logical 'close' button and the drawer closes, leaving its container in the visual state in which it started. A familiar example of this effect might be something like the Mac Dock in 'auto hide' mode, where the Dock moves in and out of sight and addressability with some pointer action. The Dock is always 'there', but sometimes just not visible. So it would be with the drawer.
I am wondering if a solution would be based loosely on theDrawer.setVisible(), or whether something that sets the drawer's component width or height to 0 for-hide would be more likely.
Can anyone offer guidance on how to approach this using standard Swing techniques?
Thanks.You are on the right track with the setVisible method. It will hide and visibly behave like the component was never added to the layout of the component it is contained in.
For example, say I have 2 panels and two buttons. Panel A is the main container of Panel B and the two buttons. Button A is the 'Open' button, and Button B is the 'Close' button. Panel B was added to Panel A but immediately set to be not visible. Pressing the 'Open' button will toggle the Panel B setVisible method to true and show the panel and it's contents. Obviously the 'Close' button is the opposite.
By doing this it is very easy to have a collapse and expand functionality with your components. -
Multiple HTTP GET requests for individual classes
Hello,
I have a Java plug-in deployed under tomcat 6. JRE version is 1.6.0_16. All the required jars are deployed packed (pack.gz) and the applet tag has 'java_arguments' parameter defined as:

All the jars get loaded nicely as I see in the Tomcat access log:

but immediately I see a bunch of GET requests for the individual classes in the same log4j jar:

As you can see each of these GET requests are returned a Http error code 404. While testing locally, this isn't adding any delays, but over a real deployment it's bound to be slow down the applet loading while the server is responding to each of these class requests.
Subsequently, the application itself runs without any issues and these bogus class requests failures have no effect (thankfully) on the functionality.
Any one seen this behavior? Appreciate any thoughts or help.

Request For Enhancement: Add method mouseIn() to JComponent
I would like to propose that a new method be added to JComponent. This method would return boolean true if the mouse is currently over the JComponent and false if not. Method signature: public boolean mouseIn().
This method would make it easier to accomplish visual feedback for when the mouse is over any JComponent, similar to how rollover can be done for AbstractButton.
Currently, the best method I can come up with is to add a MouseListener that records the state from the mouseEntered() and mouseExited() events. I add my own method mouseIn() that returns that state. Then method paintComponent() can check this state by calling mouseIn() and paint the component accordingly.
At first I thought the MouseListener should be added in each and every constructor of each and every JComponent, but then realized actually, the place to provide this feedback is in the ComponentUI class for each JComponent, as part of a custom Look & Feel. What I have come up with is to add the MouseListener to the JComponent in the ComponentUI's createUI() method, recording the state in the ComponentUI instance. The problem with this is, it makes it impossible for the ComponentUI to be a singleton like most of the ComponentUI classes are for the standard L&F's. This requires that each JComponent instance have its own ComponentUI instance.
If JComponent had this proposed mouseIn() method, the ComponentUI methods could simply call this method, and the ComponentUI would not have to record JComponent-instance-specific state. There would not be a need for so many instances of ComponentUI and MouseListener.Hi,
imho this request for enhancement is much better than your other onces. In fact monitoring this state is more than just using mouseEntered(..) and mouseExited(...) - if there is a method, it must return a valid state - if mouse has entered and you make the component invisible, mouse does not exit before that takes place - if you open another application which covers this component, mouse does also not exit before, but the component stays visible - you see, there are much more things to control, to get a valid state at any time. And mouseIn() is an ugly name and says less - why not isMouseOver() or something like this?
Another thing is, why do you request this for JComponent?- Should java.awt.Component not get this feature in your opinion?

Purpose of declaring the method or class or static and as instance
what is the purpose of declaring a method in a class or the class itself as static.
Does it mean we cannot create a copy of that class or method if we declare it as static.

please provide some conceptual undersatnding regarding the static and instance class with one exampleStatic methods are often used for the implementation of utility methods. Please have a look at the class CL_ABAP_CHAR_UTILITIES for example.
You use the methods of this class in the same way as you would use a function in ABAP (like
LINES( itab )
). You use it in a static way because the functionality is always the same no matter in what context you are calling the function.
The purpose of instance methods is that their logic is in some way related to an attribute of the object instance that you use to call it.
For example, you create an instance of object PO (a purchase order) called MY_PO. Then the method
MY_PO->ADD_POSITION
would add a position to a concrete PO that has a unique number etc. But if the object has a static method DELETE_POSITION then it just deletes the current position of a PO, regardless on which concrete PO you are acting at the moment.

My top 10 list:
1) Require enough extra safe guards that users can't accidentally rename their Home folder.
2) Don't let the Finder become unresponsive and beach-balled when dot-mac mounting is occurring.
3) Faster Finder list view updating when sorted by last modified.
4) OS update scripts should perform a hard disk verify before installation. If hard disk does not verify, the user should be told of the risk of proceeding and given directions on how to fix before proceeding.
5) The filesystem should should be able to fix itself with fsck (ala AppleJack) without being booted from install CD/DVD.
6) iPhoto Library folder should have an extra layer of protection to keep users from messing with it via the Finder.
7) Forced shutdown via power key should give OS and filesystem more of a chance for recovery. (Not sure how this would work, but if users are doing this, it should not be so often fatal.)
8) System maintenance scripts should have a method for running (other than cron) for those who don't leave their computer on 24/7.

David Pogue explains why this can't be done in his Mac OS X: The Missing Manual He basically says that running fsck without an operating system disc is much akin to "a doctor performing an appendectomy on himself." While a method of doing this is provided, naturally fsck itself is not analyzed because it can't do that. To run fsck without an operating system disc, boot into single user mode, holding command-S at startup. Type /sbin/fsck -fy
followed by return key,
when done type:
/sbin/mount -uw /
followed by return key and when done with that type

Thankfully single user mode provides more safeguards. But they aren't perfect. Fixing the directory is something that should only be done if your data is backed up, and it is obvious you may have a damaged directory. A damaged directory may have the symptoms of a dying hard drive, and it is impossible to tell the difference.

User self request for a RESOURCE
Hi Experts,
I am facing the problem to self request the user for AD resource and getting the below error
Exception java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.String was thrown in adapter "ADCS Create User". The Adapter Response was "java.lang.String" .Setting task status... "java.lang.String" does not correspond to a known Response Code. Using "UNKNOWN".
But in the admin console when user request for the AD resource through AccessPolicy/Resource Profile user can able to provisioning into the AD resource.

1) In process form i checked the auto populate and autosave option in this scenario administrator can easily provisioned into the AD resource and in the object form m populating organization filed.If i wont do this then i have to edit the the process form and save it, then only user can provisioned in to AD.
2) If i am not populate the fields then i am not getting the error which was sent in earlier post but showing pending status(without approval) and user not provisioned in AD.
3) In self request you don't populate the field, it stays null which results in the class cast exception in the provisioning code. as u said , in this case if i want to provision the user through Adminconsole and as well as user self request for Provisioning in AD Resource case a) From adminconsole user provisioned
b) User self request not working and showing status as pending.
