Request for Interpretation of insufficient bandwidth error

To iChat Discussions:
I have looked at many of the messages posted concerning the "insufficient bandwidth" error that I am receiving from iChat. I have implemented all suggestions and I am still having trouble.
I am using a capable Quad G5 with an iSight camera. I have all updates installed with Mac OS X 10.4.6. I am using iChat 3.1.4 (v432).
I always get the "insufficient bandwidth" error message when I initiate a video chat with the outside world. I can text with all buddies.
I see the three test sites (appleu3test01,appleu3test02,appleu3test03) with green video cameras (multiple),as well the other contacts on my Buddly List.
I am connected to a university wireless system. I can transfer files up and down at about 6 Mbps, so there is no bandwidth problem. The IT experts say there are no ports blocked and that all is well. I have the Mac OS X firewall turned off. I can video chat perfectly with buddies inside my building, but when I try to go outside, I get the "insufficient bandwidth" error message.
Following a thread on the iChat Discussions, I captured an error log for iChat. I was hoping someone in the Discussions could interpret the log results so I could diagnose the problem with connecting from to the outside world. I annotated the log with some information about when I did what, starting the line with a /. I used the command
/Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7
from the command line in a Terminal session. The error log follows:
/ I started up iChat and everything came up normally
13-21-96:~ westfall$ /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7

Hi Gary,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
I see that you seem to have done the Quicktime setting
094151.005637 Bandwidth based on QT prefs = 21474836
094151.261284 BWD: GotBandwidth: 1618529/10814842 (up/down) @[35.13.21.96:255.255.252.0]
094151.261318 BWD bandwidth: 1618 kbits up, 10814 kbits down.
It is the IP listed here that worries me.
You say you are on a Wireless connection to the University's service but you are showing a Public IP (One I would expect to see as part of the info)
Has the Uni given you a direct outside line as it were ?
Are you saying you can use Bonjour but not the AIM side ?
Or do you mean that you can call out over the AIM side and get back to Buddies in your Building but not others ?
I am expecting you to tell us that the set up is like this:
Uni connection to the internet (Server or modem) <-> 1 or more routers <-> Wirless connection <-> Your computer
With a domsetic set up you would have a Public IP at the modem. This may or may not pass that IP to the next device. At this point there would be a LAN set of IPs issued to the subsequent devices and computers.
LAN IPs are in three groups of numbers
192.168.xxx.xxx
10.xxx.xxx.xxx
172.(16-32).xxx.xxx (basically a subset within 172.xxx.xxx.xxx)
The IP you show here is not one of those.
It is possible that the Uni has decided to use there own choice of IP numbers for their LAN.
However I would still expect to see two IP's showing up for you. One Public and the IP your computer has on the LAN.
Can you tells what IP you see in System Preferences > Network > Connection method in second drop down and then TCP/IP tab ?
I am expecting this to be a NAT problem.
More info on how the Uni are routing you to the outside would be helpful.

  • Insufficient Bandwidth Error

I'm trying to connect to a friend that has dial-up and no camera (I'm doing one-way video chat). I have the right settings and have done everything everyone/every help tutorial has told me to do and I still keep getting the insufficient bandwidth error. Is it my computer or can I just not connect because of her crappy internets?

If you try to connect to another user that doesn't meet the minimum bandwidth requriements (which dial-up does not meet), you will receive the "Insufficent Bandwidth" message.
If you are on broadband, and meet the minimum requirements, you can try testing your set-up with one of the testers listed here: http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.html

  • Beating a dead horse but...Insufficient bandwidth error on Tiger 10.4.6

So I'm running a new Macbook pro i just took out of the box, my girlfriend is doing the same. It's come with the latest version of Tiger. Here's the thing: with iChat my girlfriend and i get the all-to-familiar Insufficient Bandwidth message when we try to connect. I can connect with another friend on a standard Macbook, and my girlfriend can connect with me on the PC at my work, but we cannot connect with each other.
We're both running off of Cable Modem router wifi and have bandwidth of at least 750 mbps. I've been through the support pages, opened port channels, adjusted quicktime streaming preferences, but to no avail. Any more ideas or any other tips to get this to work. Visual communication was the primary reason for the purchase of these computers, and we're frustrated to no end that it simply will not work after troubleshooting.

    HI theBen,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
At the ned of the day this can come down to the way your individual modems do NAT when using Port Forwarding, Port Triggering or DMZ and just not talk to each other properly.
This is because there are about six different ways manufacturers use to achieve NAT.
UPnP can help avoid this problem.
See here for more info http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page15.html#CertainBuddy
The iChat error messages are not always clear as to the exact problem and as you guessed ports can also be part of the problem.

  • "insufficient bandwidth" error when seemingly all is OK

after months of flawless iChatAV sessions between me in Los Angeles and my brother in NYC, we recently started getting an error message that there is insufficient bandwidth to make the connection. Yet all tests (and even an in-house visit today from a Covad technician!) seem to indicate that we both have (and exceed) the bandwidth requirements per Apple's specs for maintining a 1-on-1 video chat. As far as I know no other settings have changed on either one of our respective systems or routers.
Oddly enough this started right after (if not actually during) Hurricane Katrina. We surmised - perhaps incorrectly - that this could be a result of increased loads in one area or ISPs systems due to damage in that area and/or bandwidth issues due to rerouted signals. (are we just nuts to even "go there?")
As always - any and all suggestions are grealy appreciated
    kind regards

    Hello Theo,
I am still on, but your location(s) may be effected some, I suppose.
Were you having this problem before the Security Update 2005-008?
Because you had iChat AV working previously, my best suggestions for troubleshooting be the applicable suggestions in:

  • IChat w/ Linksys WRT54G- insufficient bandwidth error

    Hi,
I am having trouble doing a video chat with iChat AV 3.1.5. Everytime I try to connect to a friend (using the same version of iChat) I get an error stating there is insufficient bandwidth. I have a cable modem connected over a linksys router and I am pretty sure my bandwidth meets iChat's requirements.
So far I've disable my Mac OS's firewall, disabled the firewall on my router, enabled upnp, diasbled upnp and port forward the port range I am using for iChat. Nothing has worked.
Any help provided would be greatly appreciated. I am at a loss about what to try next.
    Thanks,
    Lauren

i can not offer you professional support, only a solution (one of many) that solved this particular issue!
i have the very same router, except i don't have the "security enabled" new one. i read and read possible solutions, i tried them all and only one of them worked for me.
** access the administrative page at 192.168.1.1 i believe and log in (default is "admin" and "admin")
go to access restrictions, then look at the "DMZ" menu
change those settings to allow all the ports to accept incomming and outgoing, this also exposes your router to possible attacks. i guess when your done, close those ports from the DMZ menu, use this in conjuction with the ports settings in access restrictions (port forwarding)
this is a very tedious technique, but then again, iChat has some very stupid connection issues. this way may not be the best but it worked for me. if some else has a more permanent solution, please do help the guy.

  • Insufficient bandwidth error help

Just in this last week I have been unable to video chat or audio chat because I keep getting the insufficient bandwidth message. Keep in mind that I had been doing both types of chats fine until this past week, even 4 way video was very clear. I have a 9Mbps connection and my friends have 100 Mbps fiber so bandwidth should not be an issue. Skype still works as normal though. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Is it possible that my ISP closed a port that iChat needs? In my firewall settings, I opened TCP 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298 and UDP 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5678, 16384-16403. Is there anything else I can try to get the video or audio chat working again? Anyone else have similar problems recently?
BTW, we are all using wired connections, so airport is not an issue here.

Alan..I am having the same problem. We are running a single user on both ends (10.4.4) with a G4 iBook on one end and either a G3 iBook or a G4 iMac on the other. It seems to work OK between the G3 and the G4 iMac but neither of us can do more than text/audio chat with the G4 iBook.
I wonder if there was a setting that was changed when we upgraded to 10.4.4?

  • Error -22 "insufficient bandwidth error" in iChat 10.4.7

    Hello,
Since upgrading to iChat 10.4.7. I have not been able to make reliable audio and video chats with people. I have read through previous posts here, and have done the combo update and permissions repair as recommended. I have also checked that I have all the recommended TCP and UDP ports open through the firewall.
Note that before upgrading to this version I had no problems whatsoever making video and audio chats.
I am using a wireless network linked to cable internet. I cannot chat at all now with anyone who has not upgraded to 10.4.7. With one friend who is also on a wireless network, I managed to initiate video chats only after we had both gone through the procedure of installing the 10.4.7 update, then the combo update on top, and repairing permissions.
However, with another friend, who has also gone through the update procedure described above, I cannot initiate audio or video chats, and I get the errors posted below. She is using a T1 ethernet network.
Both my friends and I are using G4 powerbooks.
    Can anyone please help?
Errors attached below - apologies for the length.
    Thanks!

Powerbook 15" Hi Res 1.67 GHz 2 Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi Seleya,
This error tells you that the SIP part of iChat (the way it negociates the ports to be used plus ringing the other person) is active and attempting to connect.
From this we can tell that the other person aknowledged to call.
With regards to port this suggests that port 5678 is open as this is where Invites are sent and received.
As the next stage is the use of port 5060 we can presume this is open as well.
Now port 5060 then passes the connection to 4 ports from 16384-16403 for 1-1 chats.
This leaves the "why doesn't it work" part.
This could be that the ports 16384-16403 are not open.
It could be that the NAT (Port Forward) information being passed back and forth is not liked by the modems or routers involved.
There are about 6 types or forms of NAT and sometimes two modems just don't "play nicely"
Now you said this worked before the update. Apple did say they made some changes to iChat that were supposed to help connections from behind some sorts of firewalls (NAT in modems is a sort of Firewall) http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303771
If either of you are doing Port Forwarding make sure the full number ports are opened.
Consider moving to UPnP at one end at least.
At the moment I am not sure which way up to read the info in the error log. (The Binary Imgaes bit starts at the bottom with the items loaded first, with iChat and in your case iGlasses loaded last).
The reason I say this is there is a SIP "BYE" in the second section that would normally be the end of the chat. If the info is supposed to be read from the bottom up this could be significant. I am not sure what circumsatnces would send this closing instruction without the person at one end doing so manually.
Most of what I know about iChat has been learned through inference and experiment. These logs are a little too new to interpret further than this at present.

Based on these sections, what can be said about the database performance?
My manager has asked me to provide the analysis so I think just telling him that "all is well" may not be enough :-)
    Best regards,

Sorry I know this AWR was for 24-hr period and as such is not very useful. The DB is not OLTP but for batch processing.
I spotted one query that has "  SELECT /*+ parallel(ABC 4) */ ... ". Would removing the "parallel" hint possibly improve?
The new server has 16CPUs vs the old one has 8. New one has 128GB of RAM and the old one has 32GB.
Sorry but what is the "top n cpu" section you have referred to above?
I just ran two reports for 30-min period and here is I see for both:
3:30pm to 4:00pm (when I see high CPU usage):

  • Insufficient bandwidth with certain buddies

Well... it's the same old problem. I get the insufficient bandwidth error. Only with one exception: I get the error with only 1 specific buddy. I can't seem to do audio/vid chat with Buddy A, but have no problems with Buddy B, and Buddy A and Buddy B can connect with one another.
I have tried all the regular fixes (ie. QT bandwidth, checked download speeds, no firewall etc) and even re-installed iChat the hard way.
Still can't connect to Buddy A though...

I have a similar problem but we are all using the most current, 10.4.5, MacOS load.
I have a 15" PowerMac G4 HD with an iSight conneted and am trying to video chat with a variety of other Macs... another 15" PowerMac G4 1.67, a 15" MacBook Pro, a 17" iMac Intel, and a 20" iMac G5. My Mac and my friend's Macs are all connected to the Internet via broadband connections... some cable modems, some DSL, and one on an AT&T T1. Sometimes it works and other times it does not... It is sporatic enough to call it unreliable. We all have enough horsepower and bandwidth but for some reason the chats fail to start and we are treated with "so-and-so failed to respond"
It is ancient history now but when we all had Panther, iChat 2 and G4s this never occured... we started having problems when we all upgraded to Tiger and started getting G5s and CoreDuos... Not a very scientific observation and I'm not sure of the relevence.

  • IChat 2.1 insufficient bandwidth msg

When trying to video chat I now get this error msg in ichat:
2006-02-04 08:30:33 +1000: There is insufficient bandwidth to maintain the conference.
Detected 48 kbps upstream and 217 kbps downstream bandwidth; 50 kbps required.
I used to be able to video chat mac to mac using old modem (dynalink rta100+), which has since died. Now I have a D-Link DSL-502T and cannot video chat. Audio and text chat both work fine still. ISP say there are no probs with my connection (256/64).
Has anyone else experienced this, or know how to fix? I assume it is in the modem settings, but d-link can't help.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512mb Ram iSight

    Hi Ralph,
thanks for your assistance. QT bandwidth is set to match my speed and iChat pref is set to none. still no success.
Did speed test at http://www.ozspeedtest.com/ results seemed normal:
    download: 211.3 kbps
    upload: 59.62 kbps
As I mentioned in original msg it was working before my old modem quit working. Have been trying to connect to testers and my brother in UK, both did work fine but now I always get "insufficient bandwidth" error. I have tried with a few diff modems too.
I have tried to set up port forwarding and a static IP with no joy (thats if I did it correctly) and have been to your iChat site. I'm stumped!
    Any other suggestions?
    thanks Simon

  • Tweaks aren't eliminating Insufficient bandwidth

My daughter and I have not been able to video and are getting "insufficient bandwidth" error messages and Connection Doctor always says our bandwith is 49 and 50 is the minimum required, but we have checked our speeds and they are 350 or greater (upload). After one tweak, I believe after closing the firewalls, we repeatedly got messages that we had declined to videoconference but we HAD accepted. ONE SINGLE TIME we videoconferenced and audio was fine but the pictures were horribly pixelated and unrecognizable.
Since that one event we are back to "insufficient bandwidth" errors and no resolution......and most bizarre....during the attempts to video I can hear the camera taking snapshots when I,m not asking it to...(I don't even know where the snapshot button is)
We bought an iBook G4 and an iSight camera and before shipping it off to her my husband and I set it up and had both iBooks sending and receiving great audio/video, using wireless in our home with cable broadband(Time Warner). We shipped the new iBook to Texas and my daughter has highspeed via satellite dish (WildBlue).
1.My download speed ranges from 1-6 and upload is about 350 and hers is the same.
    2. Both firewalls are off
    3. Her streaming is set at 768 kbps DSL/Cable and mine is set 1 Mbps Cable (the guy who installed the dish said hers was a form of DSL which doesn't use the phone line)
    4. We do not have Viex installed on our computers
    5. We used the Quicktime 7.0.1 Reinstaller for QuickTime 7.0.4
    6. I use a DI-524 wireless router
Where do we go from here?

    hI George,
Where do we go from here?
System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab
    Set this speed to 1meg
The Satelite connection is going to be very difficult to get to work at an acceptable level.
iChat makes a bandwidth check at the start up of the application.
Satelite connections tend to start slow and get faster as the data being sent or downloaded increases. This mean the person is not flat out when iChat reads the speed.
iChat work within the speed it detected.
Attempt to fool ichat by starting it up when doing a download or Uploading to a web page or similar met with little success as it also ignores what is in use and aims to use the spare capacity which in effect does not exist with Satelite.
There is not much you can do about this except move house again or get a new daughter

  • "Insufficient Bandwidth Problem" and "Did not respond" error messages

I am getting 3 error messages when I try to video chat using isight and ichat with my son's PC (which does video chat with my husband's PC) I have not been able to video chat although I can instant message with my son's PC.
    1. It says insufficient bandwidth"
    2. It says "starting" for a LONG time, and never finishes.
    3. Or they request a chat with me and I get a "Did not respond" message.
I have tried connecting with both my .mac account and my aim name inside of iChat
    So far, I have:
    1. Changed Quicktime streaming to 1mbps Cable
    2. Reinstalled Quicktime 7.0.1, erasing 7.0.3
    3. Made an ichat AV entry under Firewall, listing TCP etc ports for network entry, using numbers from previous posts
    4. Firewall is off
Since video chat works between my son's computer and my husband's, I doubt that it is our cable company or my son's. My son can also video chat with friends in his area. They are using msn or aim. However I have not been able to establish a connection using ichat.
If there are no other fixes, then I will probably have to call Apple tomorrow for a return on the isight that I just purchased. Too bad, because the Los Angeles Times this morning said that iChatAV image quality is superior to even Skype's new product 2.0 for Windows. At this time Skype does not have a cross platform product. Is that the problem with iChatAV, it really only works with other Macs?
Please advise if there is anything else that I can do to correct the problem. I have used an apple computer for more than 20 years, since the first little Apple IIc that I had. This is the first thing that I haven't been able to figure out.
    Thank you,
    Linda

    HI,
    This
    1. It says insufficient bandwidth"
    2. It says "starting" for a LONG time, and never finishes.
    3. Or they request a chat with me and I get a "Did not respond" message.
Normally implies the ports are not open some where.
The bit I have changed to Bold is not specific enough
I have tried connecting with both my .mac account and my aim name inside of iChat
    So far, I have:
    1. Changed Quicktime streaming to 1mbps Cable
    2. Reinstalled Quicktime 7.0.1, erasing 7.0.3
    3. Made an ichat AV entry under Firewall, listing TCP etc ports for network entry, using numbers from previous posts
    4. Firewall is off
Can you tell us exactly which ports you have opened and which protocols. APple Doc 93208 is Wrong.
    1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP and UDP; and 5220, 5222, and 16384-16403, which need to be open for TCP only.
You have not siad what ports you have opened and by what method in your modem ?

    Hi Sridevi,
The custom page is a selfsecured page?
ie, it will be accessed without login?
What is the profile option fnd_debuging_level 's value set to.
I Could see one your other thread
Re: You have insufficient privileges for the current Operation error
you mentioned that you did tried setting the profile options
    Framework Validation Level
    FND Function Validation LEvel
    FND Validation Level
to none, still you are facing the issue,
At what level you tried the profile options.
    Thanks,
    With regards,
    Kali.
