Request for proper order to follow for Oracle installation

Hi,
Previously, there was Oracle 11g R1 Enterprise edition was installed with custom database (win32_11gR1_database_1013) on non-clustered windows 2003 enterprise sp2 enviornment.
We are going to make 2 nodes windows clustered enviornment and it would be active-passive mode
We don't want Oracle RAC. We only want oracle 11 g R1 installed on both nodes of windows cluster and windows clustering featuring to look after active - passive mode. We only want single instance database.
Currently we are discussing the keep the current Oracle database going and make the current node as node 1(active node) of the cluster. we will arrange another server and that would be node 2 (passive mode)
I appreciate any help on what we are currently discussing is;
The following steps are in chronological order
1. We already have Oracle installed on node 1 and also oracle instance running on the node 1 (instance name is Alt_Prod)
2. This database and oracle server files (i.e. control files and redo log files are stored in shared storage, not on local drives of node 1)
3. We will make the Alt_Prod service offline from windows >> Administrative Tools >> services option (please ask if any other services to be made offline?)
4. We will switch to node 2 of the cluster and will install Oracle without database (i.e. during installation we will select software only option).
5. We will install oracle files either on local drive of node 2 or on shared storage drives
6. Once installation complete, we will return back to node 1
7. We will open the cluster administration option and will create generic service for Alt_Prod service inside the cluster administrator.
8. Same point 7 will be followed on node 2
Please add / amend where ever I’m wrong.
Thanks in advance

Basically a FailSafe environment just using only Windows Clustering. I've used that in the past with Oracle8i, hope it works out better for you on Oracle11gR1. I believe you will still need to license the 2nd node if you use it for more than 10 days in the year, if using this setup you are trying to avoid license costs.
Resp: All Oracle services on the node should be down, such as the listener. However this could be step 4 and hence reduce downtime.
4. We will switch to node 2 of the cluster and will install Oracle without database (i.e. during installation we will select software only option).
5. We will install oracle files either on local drive of node 2 or on shared storage drives
Resp: I would install the Oracle software on local storage for each node so you can minimize downtime while patching (simply switch over to the other node with the updated software, and patch the other). You can still do this using shared storage for the Oracle Home via having two Oracle Homes on the shared storage (one primary the other backup), but that adds some more complexity.
6. Once installation complete, we will return back to node 1
Resp: You don't need this step, make step 3 into step 4 and reduce outages
7. We will open the cluster administration option and will create generic service for Alt_Prod service inside the cluster administrator.
Resp: Don't forget you will need to make the Oracle data disks, listener, and agent cluster monitored resources as well with dependencies.
8. Same point 7 will be followed on node 2
Resp: I'm not that familiar with Windows Clustering anymore, but I think you only need to do this once, and just failover for testing. Your cluster/server admin will know better.
Hope this helps.

    Can I have multiple Serialized items on a service request for an "Installation" type of SR? We normally ship our machines out in batches of 6, 12, and 20 with installation by our Field Servie Techs. They would like to be able to open a single SR for the installation but would want to "Tag" the Machines for it. I am not sure the posibility of this?

  • Request for Oracle forms & Reports 12c: Free runtime in GlassFish like ADF

    a) FREE RUNTIME LICENSE IN GLASSFINS FOR ORACLE FORMS & REPORTS IN GLASSFISH
    Hello, we are Oracle Partners and we are using oracle since Oracle 7.3.4.
    I remember a beta of Oracle Forms, having the functionality to set properties in all objects, just like Visual Basic, including lines, etc. But that beta was rejected and I see Oracle had leave Oracle Forms as just a database client.
    In this moment there is a free light version of ADF.
    I will like you think in that possibility.
    Think in this, if you want to program a small software, I mean 20,000 U$, and the runtime is 40,000 U$, then this doesn't makes sense.
    Oracle is pushing small customers toward Visual Studio,
    I think the idea of a free runtime will benefit Oracle in two ways.
    For a 20,000 U$ software or less, you but Visual Studio, Sql Server 2012 is enough, not as Oracle, but is enough for that small softwares,
    this means if you give a free runtime of oracle forms & reports (like adf is doing)
    1) you will win selling development licenses and 2) selling Oracle Standard One licenses.
    If you don't do you will lose developement licenses and Oracle will continue losing the small databases market, because this is not like 10 years ago, Sql Server and other databases had improved, and the hardware too .
    2) THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LINUX MORE EASY TO INSTALL & AN EASY DESKTOP FOR THAT LINUX
    The other point I want to give feedback is linux, it's too related to oracle forms & reports improvements for small business
    Is the development of an easier Linux, to use 1) for development 2) for production.
    In the same way you don't wait 60 seconds in a normal web page to load, people don't like Linux because is not like Microsoft Windwos or Macintosh; so if Oracle wants to move to people to use linux to use Oracle Forms or Oracle Database, I think Oracle must create a more simple and tested installation for both customers and developers,
    - less is more, so the installation must have only what normally is needed.
    - you should not need to use command line for most operations, this should be an exception, normal users must do things by themselves.
    Thank you for your time

    I don't know that it will break things, but I can say that the safest thing to do would be to use separate WLS installations for each product. This may sound like overkill, but each product (ADF, Forms/Reports) have their own idiosyncrasies and requirements with respect to versions and patching, and trying to mix and match them in the same WLS installation is not, in my opinion, something that's worth undertaking.
    I have the very setup I describe (separate WLS installations for ADF apps and Forms/Reports apps), and it's working with no problems.
    Regards,
    John

  • SAP Adaptor for Oracle Installation Help

    Hi,
    I am newbie, I am looking for help in installing SAP Adaptor for Oracle.
    My Idea is to do some RFC calls to fetch data from SAP into Oracle database. I am looking for what is my starting points, what to install and configurations. If you can help me with steps to be followed is really Appreciative. I tried to search in Oracle Forums, I guess I am not able to come up with correct tags. It may be a long explanation and may be people asked this question before. If you give me links to read is good enough.
    Following is My platform:
    Oracle:
    I have Oracle 10G and 11 versions. Right now I have my infrastructer ready for 10G. If I install SAP Adaptor and get things running according to what I need, and tomorrow if I upgrade Oracle to 11 version, What all the things that I Upgrade?
    Operating System:
    Unix AIX 5.3
    SAP:
    ECC 6
    Thanks In Advance,
    Raj Murthy(Bhavaraju)

    Hello,
    Right now I have my infrastructer ready for 10G. If I install SAP Adaptor and get things running according to what I need, and tomorrow if I upgrade Oracle to 11 version, What all the things that I Upgrade?About all the topics relatives to SAP, you should ask them (to SAP support service) the question. For instance, is Oracle 11.2 certified for SAP ECC6 ? Or would you have to wait for a later release or patch from SAP ?
    Only SAP could answer you for their own product and matrix compatibility / certification.

  • Help request for Oracle DB Performance tuning

    I need some help on Oracle performance tuning.
    My environment is VB 6 frontend & Oracle 8
    in backend.
    The problem I am facing is particularly in
    muli-user environment. Some query which takes
    20 seconds to when there is only one user
    working in the network, takes more time
    (3 minutes to even 5 minutes) when there are
    4-5 users working in the network.
    What may be wrong ?
    Are there any parameters that I can
    fine tune ?
    We checked the resource utilization at the
    server level CPU utilization is max 50 %,
    Memoery utilization is 50 % (250 MB out of available 512 KB)
    null

    Hi Vinay,
    There can be many reasons for time delay.
    Here are some--
    1) You may not be releasing the locks on objects quickly after use.
    This can be obtained by querying v$locked_object.
    2) You may be holding many sessions concurrently and not closing the older ones.
    This u can get by querying v$session.
    These are some common problems in multi-user platform.
    R u using MTS?

  • SAP Best practice for Oracle installation on HPux

    Hi - I am looking for SAP best practices document to install ERP6 on Oracle 10G platform HPUNIX 31. Is there any sap best practices guide?
    Also, for Dev system, I am planning to install ABAP and JAVA stacks in one database. What do I need to do in database level?
    Last, How am  I going to configure the 2 engines to communicate?
    Any reference to documents will be appreciated.
    Regards
    k

    Hi,
    Sorry but I'm going to be a bit bold here.
    All needed information is on the guides.
    1) If you are on Windows, you put the SAP-Oracle CD/DVD in, execute the command mentioned on the installation guide type the two things mentioned on the guide and press next next next. Then you install SAP
    2) if you are on UNIX, you start SAP installation, then it stops and tell you to install Oracle. The guide tells you to run RUNINSTALLER (in capitals) you type the two things mentioned on the guide and press next next next. Then you continue the SAP installation.
    Of course, those are the simplified versions
    No response file is generated "ever". The response file comes INSIDE the installation CDs, for that reason is very important to execute the EXACT commands mentioned on the installation guides, in order to use such, already existing, response file.
    I do not understand this need of super-hiper detailed step by step guides.
    If you get one like that, then it will be obsolete after one month because there are new Oracle parameters, new oracle patches/patch sets or new .... that have to be done

    We are working for a project in the university, and basically we want to install Oracle over Linux, and develop some web applications. Before we start this project, I would like to learn which Oracle(8i or 9i) and Linux (Red Hat or Mandrake) versions would work fine and perfectly together. Since this project will be time consuming, I would rather take a right decision before we get into details.
    I would be glad if anybody share that kind of experience,

  • The danger of memory target in Oracle 11g - request for discussion.

    Hello, everyone.
    This is not a question, but kind of request for discussion.
    I believe that many of you heard something about automatic memory management in Oracle 11g.
    The concept is that Oracle manages the target size of SGA and PGA. Yes, believe it or not, all we have to do is just to tell Oracle how much memory it can use.
    But I have a big concern on this. The optimizer takes the PGA size into consideration when calculating the cost of sort-related operations.
    So what would happen when Oracle dynamically changes the target size of PGA? Following is a simple demonstration of my concern.
    UKJA@ukja116> select * from v$version;

    from t1, t2
    where t1.c1 = t2.c1 and t1.c2 = t2.c2
    alter session set events '10053 trace name context off';With above test case, I found that
    1. Oracle invalidates the query when internal pga aggregate size changes, which is quite natural.
    2. With changed pga aggregate size, Oracle recalculates the cost. These are excerpts from the both of the 10053 trace files.
    -- First 10053 trace file
    PARAMETERS USED BY THE OPTIMIZER
      PARAMETERS WITH ALTERED VALUES
    Compilation Environment Dump
    _smm_max_size                       = 11468 KB
    _smm_px_max_size                    = 28672 KB
    optimizer_use_sql_plan_baselines    = false
    optimizer_use_invisible_indexes     = true
    -- Second 10053 trace file
    PARAMETERS USED BY THE OPTIMIZER
      PARAMETERS WITH ALTERED VALUES
    Compilation Environment Dump
    _smm_max_size                       = 13107 KB
    _smm_px_max_size                    = 32768 KB
    optimizer_use_sql_plan_baselines    = false
    optimizer_use_invisible_indexes     = true
    Bug Fix Control Environment10053 trace file clearly says that Oracle recalculates the cost of the query with the change of internal pga aggregate target size. So, there is a great danger of unexpected plan change while Oracle dynamically controls the memory segments.
    I believe that this is a desinged behavior, but the negative side effect is not negligible.
    I just like to hear your opinions on this behavior.
    Do you think that this is acceptable? Or is this another great feature that nobody wants to use like automatic tuning advisor?

    __shared_pool_size = 92274688
    __db_cache_size = 37748736
    __pga_aggregate_target = 58720256
    yep, I got it! pat1=83886080, pat2=58720256Oracle continued being bounced between shared pool and buffer cache size, and about 1200th execution Oracle suddenly stole some memory from PGA target area to increase db cache size.
    (I'm still in dark age on this automatic memory target management of 11g. More research in need!)
    I think that this is very clear and natural behavior. I just want to point out that this would result in unwanted catastrophe under special cases, especially with some logic holes and bugs.

    Can anyone confirm Oracle has standard functionality of sequentinal apprvoal process for eAM Work request.
    Our current Oracle eAM project has requirement of multiple approver for Work request. Multiple approver means sequential approval process. After first approver approves it should go to second approval and continues.
    I know Oracle eAM Work order has sequential approval process, but i want to know the same funcionality available for Oracle eAM work request as well. If Oracle has the functionality please provide the details.

    1) Operating system and Service Pack, not just the family.
    - Vista is a Family of operating systems. Insufficient information (need Home, Home Premium, etc.)
    - XP is a Family of operating systems. Insufficient information (need Home, Professional, etc.)
    - Linux is a Family of operating systems. Insufficient information (need Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 Update 4, Red Hat EL 4 Update 2, OpenSuSE 10.3, Fedora 8, etc.)
    2) Version of database installed to 4 digits (9.2.0.6, 10.2.0.3, 11.1.0.6) and the database's ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID
    3) Which product being used to access the database, which computer that product is on, and the Oracle Home from which the product is run. (SQLPlus, same home as the database)
    4) The output of lsnrctl status, the contents of the tnsnames.ora and the contents of the listener.ora
    5) The output of the ipconfig /all or ifconfig and of hostname
    6) Copy paste of the actual error message, not just a paraphrase of part of a line..
    Any other ideas?

    I am not requesting this to be enforced by the forum.
    I am requesting that people like you and me reply by linking to this thread (or to the other excellent related threads) INSTEAD of replying. If we do it consistently, eventually the newbies will also enforce it voluntarily, and that will cut the useless teeth-pulling-effort replies to a minimum.
    In your 90% posts figure - you do realize that that means 90% of the posts are badly formed and are wasting your time as well as mine.
    Or - if they were properly formed - you and I could answer that with a lot less effort and a lot faster. With the implication is that the person asking would generally get a resolution a lot faster as well. Net result - you and I get to sleep more (or answer more questions) and people with problems are happier because they get them resolved faster.
