Hi. Recently I downloaded the InDesign CS3 international and CS4 english trial versions. I wanted to see the application what everybody mentioned me to try for my new job. I began to install the CS3, and the installation recoiled with the message about the insufficient hard disk capacity to continue installation. I have plenty of gigabytes on the disk, but the installation clamoured for 2.2 GB more on the C: volume. Well, I know that the lamers use their hard disk in one giant, therefore vulnerable and slow volume. But I use and still want to use only 8 GB for the system volume and for anything other. This configuration has already helped me out from some system crash.
Almost all of the applications offer the choice of the drive and folder where I want to install the program files. So does your product, but it wants to install 300 MB into the chosen folder and gigabytes into the Adobe folder on drive C:. This must be a joke, I think. Almost all of the applications can manage to store the needed components in the program folder or in a separated folder by the users choice. Everybody is able to find the soluton for it. The Adobe softwares, what I have seen, usually feed up the common system folders, unlimitedly. This is very bad manner, I mean it. I use a huge number of programs and that 8 GB has always been enough for the smooth working. If one giant application - also containing unnecessary but unskippable components, I saw it at one of my colleagues - wants the whole place for itself then I am pressed to forsake that. And I am dejected. Hopefully the next version will bring a new approach and the system requirements will show more regards for the users' requirements.
Farewell.

My friend, let me know what I can save with properly divided hard drive. But I let you know it, too. You probably are a user who doesn't care of the accumulated garbage on your machine. If the system is too slow, you reinstall the whole one, don't you. And all of the applications, of course, because the registry and the component folders has been erased. Maybe it spends an hour. Well, if I would have to reinstall my system, it would spend a week, approximately. All the applications, all the associatings, and last but not least the settings of the applications. This is not the same weight I guess. So, you probably don't make system backups because you have nothing to lose. I have, that's why I already create system backups with particularly set and adjusted states to archive. Earlier with Norton Ghost, now with a more stable utility, with Easy Image. From sector-to sector, I save the whole system drive in a secured image, stored in a DVD, and when my system becomes suspicious, dirty or instable, I can restore a well working configuration, erasing even the last bytes of the state to be annihilated. I am able to try any programs, make careless experiments, because when my playground is too crowded, I destroy the present and recall the past. This is what I mean comfort.
If I followed your way and stored everything in one volume then I could not make a backup of the system. I could try to backup folders but as everyone knows, not all the important contents are stored in files and folders. So you have to abandon the safety, I don't. You think you are in safety because you have downloaded the updates and patches. Well, I am in safety because I haven't ever download any system updates or patches. I had created my system configuration almost 5 years ago. When have you reinstalled your system last time?
I tell you a more interesting thing about my system. A few months ago a fully reliable software has ruined my logical drive chain, started from the partition table, if you know what I mean. The C drive has gone, okay, but some other volumes became also invisible. Maybe hurt. Somebody would decide to reinstall the whole thing, and to lose the data which are not archive right then. I took up a floppy disk of mine with an MS-DOS 7.1 system and some really handy tools. Booted on, and rechained the complete drive map by hand. Well, spent a day and a half, because I'm really out of practice, but I did not lose anything, not a file, not a byte. DOS can span 8 GB long partition in the system area to be able to use the whole disk repairing capacity of those ancient but definitely reliable and helpful tools. I took care of this limit, so at this time my care was repaid. I am curious of your methods to save your disk when a "reliable" program becomes your enemy.
I always clear off the garbage from my machine, this is a fee for using my PC. I've been use it for five years without system loss. I use tons of programs, including some giant games, and all of them can manage their tasks without using up my 8 gigabytes size system drive. Just because this is how a well designed program is made. Just because this is the right thing. All of them. The Adobe InDesign can not. And not a few kilobytes were missing to make the things done. Two gigabytes were required, not less. Now what can I think about it? Are the other programs made by excessive care of storage requirement of the common files or is the Adobe InDesign constructed without the minimal care of the users' problems? Well, not each program was very careful, but I can use my system at five years after the big bang. So, the final conclusion has to be that Adobe doesn't worry about that ******* who has bought the great product, and the great product, the most and only solution InDesign is a crap. Any objection?

  • How do I allocate more system resources to a program?

I have a large spreadsheet that is very slow
I wanted to allocate more of my sysyems resourses to enable it to crunch the data quicker
I have upgraded to 8G of Ram and have the highest CPU available

There is no explicit way to do this. Programs request all the resources they need, and the system provides what is available. Lion manages system resources very efficiently.
To ensure the program can use what it needs, quit all other programs that may be running (this includes your login items as well as any third party kernel extensions that you may have installed), and ensure you have adequate free space on your hard disk. That's all you can do.

  • Rant: project developers should pay more attention to bug reports

I believe that software reliability is one of the key parts of software quality: having a lot of features is useless if they don't work reliably. It is for this reason that most open source project have a bug tracker of some sort. However, having a bugtracker is not very useful if you let bugs sit there until you can mark them as "obsolete" several years later. I try to report most of the bugs I find because I believe it's one of the best contributions I can make to open source, however in my experience (I've reported dozens of bugs), more often than not bug reports are ignored, even if they are detailed and the reporter agrees to give more details when needed.
So if you develop an open source project and you're reading this, please pay attention to your bug reporters. These people take time to help you improve your software, don't ignore them. At the very least, close your bug tracker if you're going to ignore bug reports anyways. That way I won't lose valuable time creating reports that you will never read.

This is probably true, many bugs are ignored. But open-source developers normally only have their free time to work on their projects, and the motivation is not the same for all issues.
Also I think it's not common that all issues get ignored. Usually it's the ones who are not important, or very hard to fix, or a combination of both.
In any cases, don't lose motivation, reporting bugs is indeed a good contribution, and even if only a minority gets fixed, it's still better than nothing

  • Letter of Appreciate to Devs, and two requests

Now that the nouveau and NVidia junk has been  sorted out, I'm back to Arch. (I use it for my consulting business, when the graphics work that is)
I want to say Thank You,  to the developers for all their hard work.  They get yelled at all too often, and get thanked way too little.
I'm an older guy (Vietnam Era vet), and I appreciate this distro, more than the others because of it's rolling release nature, and by it's giving control to us, the users, in what is or is not included in our individual systems. As the date to the left of this post uindicates, I am no noob to Arch.
The only times I've had to use something else is when the graphics sub-system was broken. I had to work, and the CLI did not allow me to do that work. I freelance to make up the difference in income that VA disability doesn't cover.
I know about the finger pointing at NVidia, Xorg, and choose not to assign blame. I just don't have enough technical info, and I really hate pissing contests anyway, so I choose not get involved.
The Nouveau drivers in my experience have been unusable in a production environment (especially CAD). I have an NVidia GTX-560Ti card, and on the Nouveau site they don't support it well. 400's and 600's, but the 500's seem to have been passed over for what I will assume are legitimate resons within their dev community.
You see I use a commercial CAD package I purchased for Linux. I need the graphical sub-system to not break, or I have a work stoppage. Yes, I now dual-boot with Winsucks with the same CAD package installed therein, so work can continue in case of breakage......now..... ( at one time Arch was the only OS installed, until an NVidia driver update broke the entire system and I missed work deadlines). I would welcome the day when I can return to the paradigm of only Arch being installed. Windows 8 is a disaster (in the preview edition I VM'd). I will refuse to use it, as I do Gnome 3.*. (I need a traditional desktop where I can work, with multiple workspaces, and not have to play with a smarphone. I acknowledge that some users prefer this. So be it. I just don't want this paradigm shift shoved down the throats of traditional users.) I prefer MATE over XFCE. More flexibility is the reason, more choices for me the user without having to do a lot of things by hand (hint = gtkrc editing). For now, I use XFCE.
    Request #1 is this:
As updates go, I humbly request that a little more time and QA happen on the graphics level so "pacman -Syu's" don't break the GUI because of some issue with either NVidia, Xorg, or whomever. And in saying QA, I do not implicate the package maintainer, but am suspicious of NVidia releasing an update that screws the pooch, so QA means a little more testing on NVidia's/Xorg's latest updates before being released to the wild.
I would welcome the day when nouveau is ready for primetime, and I am saddened that NVidia is not cooperating with them. Considering the Nouveau dev's have had to reverse engineer everything, I'd say they've done a stellar job......but they are not there yet for those of us in a production environment, regardless of which distro one chooses.
I use Arch also becasue of it's currency, and therein lies the catch 22. Currency vs stability. I also use Arch so I do not have to reinstall every 3-6 months to get current packages, and wasting all the time it takes to install a new release and get it all setup the way one likes. I use Arch also because it gives me control over my system.
I'm just asking for a tad more attention to detail if possible, to the graphical subsystem when updates occurr. If I had the cash, I buy a "butcher machine" for the sole purpose of being a testing resource for Arch, but seing that I am disabled, cash is tight so I can't help in a meaningful way. And I am NOT blaming the NVidia maintainer. NVidia is just as guilty for not keeping current with xorg developments, etc. I just ask that if an NVidia update breaks things in testing. Warn us on the main page as you do for init updates, etc. Then don't release the problematic update to the wild, or if possible, give us workarounds to implement on our systems to keep us online.
    Request #2 is:
Please bring the MATE desktop mainline. I've used it in Mint before returning to Arch, and with the GTK 3 libs, it performs well, is compatible with newer GTK3 based apps, yet maintains the traditional desktop for those of us who are business oriented. I left Mint becuase I could get the most current libs needed to run the latest updates of my CAD package, not at least, without butchering the system, and causing a lot of downstream headaches for myself. Ubuntu, Mint's parent is getting prety wierd in how they do things compared to a mainstream distro. Compiling many things manually and adding them to your system causes more downstream issues, than the ones you fix for your immediate problem.
I know that the latest packages may break something....That's part of the risk of currency.....I am just asking that new packages don't take the system down to it's knees. My definition of "System" = base system plus functional GUI in XOrg.
Yes, I review the main Arch news before I update. So I am not a "stupid" user of the distro where warnings are ignored, like some I read in the forums.
I realize that others may have had different experiences than me, and I by no means want to minimize those experiences in this post.
Again, I appreciate Arch...And I thank all the devs for their volunteer time and effort. Sincerely so.
    Respectfully,
    Dave
PS: The new install method: Not that hard. I used my netbook so I could read the wiki, while I was reloading my main workstation from scratch to check it out. And in about the same time, I had a new Arch installed. A few rough edges, but all easily fixed. Once the wiki gets fleshed out, I suspect all the rough edges will vanish into thin air.

You can do a "test update" without spending any money: Create a 10 GB partition and install Arch Linux on it with the same packages you have on your "real" installation. Just wait to do an update until you have time to deal with possible errors.
dcbdbis wrote:Please bring the MATE desktop mainline.
MATE is available through the AUR and through other repositories, as is mentioned on the wiki page. Is there a benefit to having it as part of the official Arch Linux repositories?

  • Thanks for adding "request escalation"

Thanks to whomever finally got them to add the "request escalation" feature to the online SR system.
(I know the 3 managers I'd talked to a while back were working on it).

We're excited to have it implemented now and offer an easy way to get more attention on a SR when needed.

  • Feuture Request: Open Acrobat from within Reader

Many people will recognise this: sometimes you just need reader to open invoices, web documents, etc. Sometimes you work with Acrobat a lot. Now you can switch the default program to open pdf's every time, but that's a hassle. Why isn't there (as far as I can see and I googled quite some time) a button in Reader that says: "Open this document in Acrobat"? I guess this would save millions of people a lot of hassle.
Its eems so obvious that I cannot imagine another request has been made for this, but I couldn't find it, so here it is. If I overlooked something, please point it out.

You cannot choose which program to open a PDF with when it is online or in an email. Which 95% of the PDF's one opens for just reading, in general are. Those other 5% are no problem, I agree.
Acrobat is uses much more system resources and takes much longer to start than Reader. (Also I mostly disable the  the system startup time slurping Adobe "helpers" from Windows startup since I do not use Acrobat much, except for one month in a year when I work on printing matter. This makes startup time for every day use even longer.) I have a pretty fast computer, but for people with slower computers this is even more a real issue.
Anyway, every user is different and has his reasons to do things this way or that way. Users who prefer Reader for everyday use, but sometimes need Acrobat;s function, for instance for OCR-ing, - which you often do not know that you will need at the time of opening - would benefit much from this simple feature.

  • Six activity types in a Resource but require more splits

    Hi,
We got a limitation on the number of activity types to be assigned to the resource(work center) as such there shall be limitation on the splitting of Costs in cost component structure as well. So to tide over the difficulty, We can have one more dummy resource for utilities for assigning another six more activity types.
But without this arrangement of having extra resource, how template allocation aid in this. Pl explain in detail. Is there any way other than template allocation?. To be precise in my query, we need to use activity type for machine hour for splitting Repair & maintenance exp and Factory admn expenses, etc.
For your kind info, I do not want to use costing sheet due to its limitations.
    Regards,
    Ashok Singh

    Hi Ashok
There is a way... Take your PP consultant for a good dinner at a Five Star Hotel
Well, I had to face a similar situation and the PP guys had a lot of reservation against confirming an extra operation... What we agreed to was as below
    1. I made them agree to maintain a 2nd operationin Routing...
    2. PP guys wont confirm this operation... This would be confirmed in a batch mode at the period end.... However, in my case, the activity qty in 2nd operation was based on a formula i.e. based on the Qty confirmed in the 1st operation....
If you wish to adopt this approach, you may have to confirm the Standard Qty....
    3. The solution was that I used BAPI BAPI_PRODORDCONF_CREATE_TT... I created a Z T code which would execute Date / Plant wise....
I gave all the options like executing in test mode first... checking the result and then posting in update mode
It would confirm the 2nd op in all those Prod Orders in which 1st operation was confirmed.... Ofcourse, it took 2-4 months to stabilize.... But now, it is running smoothly for over 2 yrs

  • PCI Resource conflict using PLX9054

We use a PLX9054 PCI chip in our PXI designs. We have found that for some computers, only four modules can be used per PCI bus segment -- the fifth module reports a resource conflict. Looking at the detailed resource usage, there does not seem to be any conflict in the address range or IO address range. On some computers, all five (or more) modules work without a problem.
The problem may be in what addresses are assigned to the modules -- some debugging suggests that the conflicted module has been assigned addresses reserved for the ISA bus, and are not carried across the PCI bridge we use to run the PXI crates.
Has anyone else seen this? PLX tech support has not provided any insight.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I agree that the problem is the BIOS, not the OS.  From the resources requested, though, I suspect that the problem is I/O space.  Can you change the resource requests to eliminate the I/O space requirement?  It's a scarce resource that's likely to cause problems, and I'd recommend not using it even if it's not the cause of this particular problem.
A bridge's minimum I/O allocation is 4kB, and there are only 16 allocations (64 kB) available.  While that sounds like plenty for what you're doing, it's complicated by ISA mode aliasing, which essentially limits you to 256 bytes of every 1024 bytes.  And the BIOS might not allocate I/O space well (I've seen it before).
For your memory space requests, you might as well make them both 4kB.  The minimum increment for a bridge is 1 MB, so all boards in your chassis can use up to 128 kB without using any more system resources.
Let me know if using only memory space fixes it.

  • Apple !!! • We Need A Little More Information From You •

This forum is inhabited by many dedicated Logic users taking a lot of time to help each other and other users that are less experienced.
I think we deserve a little more attention concerning information about compatibility and potential "dangers"
    Here's an example :
    http://duc.digidesign.com/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=UBB15
Above link is to digidesign's User Forum DUC - Announcements (This thread is by NO means intended as a Logic vs. Pro Tools situation)
On this part of their forum one can find compatibility alerts etc. i.e. the first post is called "Mac OS X 10.4.9 Qualified & Pro Tools Launch Error Help" This post is addressing a problem (also confirmed by Apple Support) with the auto update advising users to NOT use the auto update but go and get the combo update from Apple's website. In this particular case PT could face a launch error when having used the 10.4.9 auto update. The issues was not only seen by PT but many other 3rd pty. manufacturers also advised not to use the auto update.
The Digidesign Announcements are very practical and prevents a lot of potential problems.
I think it could help us Logic users help our selves and others if Apple were to make arrangements for the Logic Pro forum to contain something in the nature of what the DUC offers.
I would love to have easy access to something like compatible interfaces, Plug-Ins etc. etc. Fact is that there are quite many Plugs and hardwares which claims to offer Logic compatibility but still ensure Crashes instead of workflow.
Also, digidesign offers something called "Answer Base" it is a document that keeps growing and it is a base of "known Issues" and how to fix
    here's a Link - http://answerbase.digidesign.com/
If you do a search on - Logic Pro, you'll find useful information and answers to questions that 100's before you have asked. Q's also asked a lot on this forum by people using Digidesign hardware with Logic.
It would be wonderful if we could get something like this
    Thank you…

  • Zone Resource Control example website

    G'Day folks,
I've began work on a website to list examples of setting zone resource controls (processor sets, FSS, ...).
    http://www.brendangregg.com/zones.html
Now before I get carried away, does anyone think that maybe I shouldn't - if so I will take it offline no problem.
Just checking I dont get replies like,
"please don't document zones as it's all about to change", or something like that ...
PS. I was pretty happy to see FSS work - that's really cool! :-)
    thanks,
    Brendan Gregg
    [Sydney, Australia]

    G'Day Gary,
    Thanks for your comments!
    Here are some corrections/additions:
The best way to check if pools are enabled is to run
pooladm and examine the output. poold may not be
running and pools may still be active, so performing
a pgrep for poold isn't conclusive.Yes, good point.
In commands 2, you don't need the "final pooladm -c".
The poolcfg -df command will have already done
e this. The final pooladm -c didn't make sense the first time I encountered it, so I had made pretty sure that it was necessary. I'll redo my checks and update the site. Without it, I'm only using poolcfg to make changes, and the man page for poolcfg has:
    # man poolcfg
If you use the -d option,
the modifications occur to the kernel state. Actual  activa-
tion  of  the  resulting configuration is achieved by way of
the pooladm(1M) command. It seems to imply a pooladm command is necessary for activation (I used a pooladm -c).
In Resources CPU1 it may be worth mentioning that you
can immediately modify pool bindings for zones if you
    use poolbind.
    e.g.
    /usr/sbin/poolbind -p work1-pool -i zoneid workzone1thanks, I hadn't seen this before!
At the end of Resource CPU 2. It isn't poold which
decides how to allocate CPUs when a configuration is
applied to a system using pooladm -c. This work is
done inside libpool (3LIB) by the pool_conf_commit
API.Ok, I haven't seen documentation on what specifically happens after typing pooladm -c. The documentation such as the poold man page draws a lot of attention to poold:
    # man poold
poold periodically examines  the  load  on  the  system  and
decides whether intervention is required to maintain optimal
system performance with  respect  to  resource  consumption.
poold also responds to externally initiated (with respect to
poold) changes of either resource  configuration  or  objec-
         tives.
If intervention is required, poold  attempts  to  reallocate
the  available  resources  to ensure that performance objec-So a change in resource configuration sounds like it means "pooladm -c", and poold is responding.
I'm not sure you meant pool_conf_commit, the man page describes it as writing the config to permanent storage - not triggering an allocation of CPUs.
At my work blog, I have various hints, tips and
tricks for Solaris Resource Pools. If you want to add
a link to my blog (where I try and focus on Solaris
Resource Management issues) feel free. It's at:
    http://blogs.sun.com/garypen
Great, I've linked it already, and uploaded a new version (and I imagine I'll upload more versions as I learn more about resource controls).

  • Mapping labour resource in ppds

    Hi
I want to map labour resource with labour time fetching in order at the time of scheduling in ppds. Please help me how to achieve this..
    my schenario is as....
normally i have 50 labour resources, but due to some problem only 30 labour resource came....how i can utilise these 30 resources so that my machine utilisation will be maximum and i will be able to meet my requirement...
please let me know for further clarification...
    Regards
    pradeepta

    Hi Santosh,
You have to maintain one more capacity with category 002 in ECC with available capacity & formula to calculate the capacity. When you transfer this resource to APO apart from the machine resource, labor resource will also be transferred to APO.
When you use this resource (machine) in recipe and transfer this recipe into APO, it will reflect as secondary resource in APO PPM.
When orders are scheduled for machine you also get the requirement of labor.
Scheduling formula does not contain the parameter for labor; hence the primary resource & secondary resource consumption are same.
If the labor houru2019s requirements are different than the processing time of operation, you can try to change capacity consumption data manually for secondary resource in PPM.
If worker are not required in to give their full attention to one machine only but a pool of worker operate a couple of machine which required more attention at certain movements i.e. loading/unloading or set-up. you can create a pooled capacity in ECC system, which can be assigned to may work centers. The capacity is transferred as resource to APO and modeled as multi-mixed resource (no-dimension).
    Regards,
    VD

  • Burning more than one movie to DVD

This'll sound dumb but I would like to know if (and how) I can burn multiple .dv movies using iDVD5. As far as I can tell, iDVD5 only handles one movie at a time. In iMovie5, I created a number of movies and shared/saved them at maximum quality (.dv). They play fine in QT. Now, I want to burn them all onto a DVD. Is this possible?

    Hello Smiley,
you should create a new topic for your question. That way it will receive more attention and other users may benefit from possible solutions as well.
.... but as you are here already:
Do you have chapters in your movie?
If so check that you have set them according to "The Rules of Chapter Markers":
    - No chapter markers on or within 2 seconds of a transition.
    - No chapter markers within 2 seconds of the beginning or the end of the movie.
    Also:
    1. free some space on the startup drive (15-20GB recommended)
    2. Trash preferences (com.apple.iDVD.plist) and empty trash
    3. Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility
Now create a new iDVD project and import your iMovie. Do not use the "Share to iDVD" option in iMovie, but save and quit iMovie then open iDVD and drag in your movie from the media pane or choose File > Import > Video.
. iDVD is NOT a disc burning app, so leave that work to software designed for it. Instead use iDVD's "Save as Disc Image" option (File > Save as Disk image). This creates an .img file on your HDD, that can be stored for future use and gives you the option to preview your DVD on your Mac before burning to disc.
Use Disc Utility or Toast to burn your DVD at slow speed. 4x is acceptable, 2x (... or even 1x) is better.
Use high quality DVD-R (not DVD+R) media (e.g. Verbatim) to minimize burn errors and compatibility issues. Make sure the DVD is compatible with slow burn speed (e.g. 1x-4x)
    hope this helps
    mish
